    You need a Rat Terrier. They can kill lots of rats and mice, also great pets for active boys. The little princess looks like her Dad.

    For those field mice, stick the hose in the holes, and wash them out - have chickens on standy as they LOVE mice!

      It doesn’t work!!! They just dig another hole!

    • @tommielourogers4327
      @tommielourogers4327 3 роки тому +11

      They can’t dig a new hole if the chickens ate them when they came out to keep from drowning. However you might not want the chickens in that bed. Other possibilities are to train your boys to catch nonpoisonous snakes and let them go down the mouse holes. You could buy a havaheart trap and put lots of goodies like peanut butter, and chicken scratch in for bate. Then give the trapped mice to the chickens in another area. You can never have too many barn cats!

      Cats, they are killers! We have drop off cats and they are vicious. We got them fixed and we feed them and they stick around and bring us mice, moles and birds everyday, lol. Best thing that happened to our garden.

    My sister gave me some amaranth seeds one year.
    I lived in the middle of downtown in my small hometown in a rural area. We lived less than a block from all 3 of the bars in town. I planted the amaranth around my front porch and was eagerly looking forward to harvesting them. They got about 8 feet tall and we're finely blooming. Then one night at about 1 am, I heard a drunk farmer singing "Hey Hey We're the Monkeys" off key and at the top of his lungs. By the time I got dressed and made it outside, he was pulling the last of my "pig weeds" out of the ground, and telling me:
    "That was a close one, but I got rid of them for you before they went to seed." I started to say something but he held up his hand and said:
    "No need to thank me." Then walked off continuing to sing.

      Hollar Homestead, Here in Maine every summer our garden plants in buckets get covered with assorted pests...we use some baking soda around our plants but not on the plants and so far, lots less than last year...2 wild hen turkey with 16 polts are always taking care of pests out in the lawn...we are finally getting some needed rain, easy and gentle style...hope the 5 bee hives down the street will add some pollenators to expand the flowers...man, the price of honey here is almost as much as maple syrup...Cheers from Maine.

    Old Timers Potato Beetle Pickin' : Get a small 1 gallon container or bucket and 1/2 fill with water. You can go smaller so it's lighter, but gage it for how big our taters are. Go around to each potato plant. Hold the bucket below the leaves and with the other hand knock or tap the beetles/nymphs into the water. That way you are not hand picking each and every single beetle. Then feed to chickens. Love you guys!

    My female cat gives me a mouse every other morning. Diatomaceous earth might help with the grubs. Also mice hate cinnamon and black pepper among other things and that helped a lot in my garden. Plus I put used litter box fun stuff down their holes. 😛 whatever works. I have a squirrel problem and so far cinnamon seems to help my flowers and small garden I have.

    Feeling for you guys with the rodent issue. There’s a mouse plague along Eastern Australia atm. Nothing seems to work or touch the sides on a massive scale.
    But the most quickest, humane way from what I’ve seen is the traps that electrocute quickly or the flip top rubbish bin (or trash cans) filled with water and peanut butter on the lid so they flip in. Best of luck.

    • @margarettt7675
      @margarettt7675 3 роки тому +2

      We use a simple variation on this bucket trap - we fill a five gallon bucket 1/3 to ½ full of water, smear a thin, two inch long line of peanut butter just above the water line, and put a stick/board ramp up to the lip of the bucket above the peanut butter. Easy to empty into a grave. No chemicals or gore.

Ben, your comfort level in front of the camera has developed so much since you guys began blogging, vlogging (whatever it's called)! The entire fam is great to watch. I love that we're seeing more of the older boys helping their dad, taking responsibility for certain aspects of the homestead with the animals, and just generally being out there to assist with whatever. I'm so glad you found the issue with your squatch mobile. I had a similar issue with an old VW 411 wagon. It would intermittently die and not start until it wanted to. Got stuck several times usually for only 30 minutes or less until it would start again. Brought it to three shops and stumped them all. Last one felt so bad for me, after I had paid him twice to fix it, he told me that if I do the work, he would supply me with known good used parts for free. He gave me a computer and a TB injector but nothing helped. Finally found the problem during a cold snap at the bottom of our driveway after a winter blizzard. -20F and I found the fuel filter was clogging the gas flow with a flap of rust that would occasionally flip us the bird and block the outflow. Found it by undoing the line at the injector with the key on. I found no flow. I continued to undo the line until I did the back side of the first fuel filter from the tank. Fuel pressure was 32psi. and it sprayed all up in my face and I had to do a 100 yard dash while blinded to get to nearest flowing water in the house and rinse my eyes out.

    How I successfully trap squash bugs. Place a 3 to 4 inch wide wood board under the squash plants it is in contact with the soil. Every morning I go out and lift the board up(this is where they hang out for the night) and flick them in a handy jar filled with soap and water that I keep near the squash plants. Works great and is non toxic

    Trashbin trap is AMAZING! I set mine up yesterday and caught 4 mice in under 1 hr. All you do is get a trashbin with metal sides, smear peanut butter in a hard to reach position on the propped open lid, they fall into a deep amount of water and drown in under 1 minute. Collect mice every day and give to your chickens for extra protein. Its a great set and forget. Just make sure they have something like a ramp or a piece of fabric attached to the side to get up there.

We also bought the base rollers so as to rotate to expose all sides to sun. Actually we bought a package deal that had one base roller. I prefer to plant the two tier with herbs and have it near the kitchen. The other with seasonal veggies. Another 3 tier is in the garden area planted with plants for the pollinators. Giles

    Your field mice are probably after the worms and grubs under your raised beds. They generally don't care for onions or garlic. We had issues like that. We are fixing it one bed at a time by building the new beds with 1/4" hardware cloth bottoms. We also have invasive sumac so I put the weed blocking woven fabric over the hardware cloth before doing a hugelkultur back fill with a compost and topsoil blend covering.

With the jf gum that comes in stick form, just pinch stick in half, role each half up and drop each piece into a different hole. It worked for me in getting rid of the Voles and Mice. Non toxic to you and your garden & works better than a cat. 👍

My neighbors were always complaining about their gardens being eaten so I researched this problem before investing in the raised gardens (I am disabled so these were much easier to take care of).

    Your garden is productive even with the pests. The farm has come such a long way since you bought the property. Take care. 😊

    You guys got this!! It looks pretty good even with all the parts that don't want to work for you. You can't say it's your fault for not watering some of it because look at the things that you didn't plant but he anyways!!! Think about it. I don't know how to say what I mean but I think you two can read between the lines and understand it. Your amazing people!!!

    Flour of lime is what we use in my garden for potato bugs. We dust the plants in the morning when the plants have dew on them.

    You need some good 2-3 year rotten cow manure for your beds this fall when your growing season is done. Also check out Living Traditions Homestead for there drip tape irrigation system, although how it would work for the beds? Gardening always hits and misses I've found over 35 years. So glad you finally got your vehicle back and fixed. Blessings to all. 😊🇺🇸

    Maybe you could put hardware cloth in the bottoms of the raised beds to keep the mice from burrowing under them. That would be a huge job to do with all the dirt in them. Definitely would be a winter job. Maybe set traps in the beds. They use to have sticky traps years ago. Also the one lady in the comments said she made a special herb treatment for her house. We had mice in the spring and fall every year in the old farmhouse. Good luck getting rid of them.
    Have a blessed evening, stay safe and healthy 🙏🥰👍👌🙏✝️🙏🇺🇸🙏

    Blend garlic cloves with jalapeños strain and add to water ( 2 heads of garlic to 4 or 5 peppers to a gallon of water) and pour in the mouse holes.

    Wow, you could have never diagnosed that fuel-line in tank problem. Kudos to you for trying. (And I'm sure you'll be able to fix any other normal problems that crop up in the future with all the research and learning you put in trying to find the problem.) It even had an expert flummoxed for a while -- so glad its finally fixed and back with you. Re the gardens -- next year will be gangbusters -- don't forget, you spent a lot of time this spring just building the beds -- that took a lot of time and effort. Your family rocks :)

    We were getting small mice coming inside our house when we first moved in. I made a spray with lavender, peppermint, spearmint, rosemary essential oils and water. Sprayed it around all doors and anywhere we thought they were getting in. Got rid of mice. You might try that around your onion bed and around any other place with mice problems.

      I put 10 drops of each oil in a small spray bottle (6 oz or so) and filled it with water. Shake well before spraying. It also helps repel spiders and smells great!

      Thank you so much. My cat does a good job once they've got in but I'd rather not have to deal with them at all. I'm also going to try steel wool in any openings and under sink pipes as another deterrent. Have a blessed day. 🦋

    Been missing you guys. Got new babies!! Your boys are great. Yeah, it's hot over here in Virginia, too. Your garden looks great. Things aren't going too well over here, glad to see yours looking like that! Now you know, your compost is better. That's where we are, a lot of stuff just not coming up. Gardening is crazy this year. You have done so much this year! Remember that. Wow, the last tower is doing great.

    Don't be down on yourself. I was in the hospital 7 days. Everything got away. Plus excessive rain and weird temperatures. I'll be happy for what I get. I'm organic and even though most farmers are not. We need produce.

    We use an equal mixture of powder sugar, flour, and baking soda mixed together and place 1/2 cup of the mixture on some butter lids. Place the lids around your barn, and outdoor shop. The mice, and field rats are attracted to it. They eat the mixture and die when they drink water. It blows up their bellies. This mixture doesn't bother other animals. We've killed several this way. Another way to get rid of mice, super glue a piece of dog food a hard nugget to the old fashoned victory mouse trap, set a few in your garden beds. The mice won't be able to remove the hard food from the trap, and the trap will snap on them. Works all the time with glued hard food. If the little critters are moles our friends use Juicey Fruit gum. They put a piece of gum in the holes and it kills off the moles in their garden beds.
