Cal Smith - The Lord Knows I'm Drinking (Original Decca Recording)

- Yes, this is the original 1972 Decca label recording of country artist Cal Smith's first #1 smash hit. This song was written by "Whispering" BIll Anderson, who was inspired to write it by an encounter he and his wife had with a couple of old, "God-fearing", church-going women that came into the restaurant/bar they were eating at. To all of those "self-righteous" people, who nag about everyonelse's problems but their own: this song is for you. Enjoy!
Today's kind of country music, ISN'T COUNTRY. There's NO Melody, and little or NO HEART. I LONG for the 50's, 60's and 70's. When country music was what it was SUPPOSED to be.
Unless you listen to early material from Gretchen Wilson, Josh Turner, and Tyler Childers.
I agagree with you
You're so correct.
Tyler Childers, Ryan Bingham, Billy Strings, Shane Smith, Taylor Nauta, Chris Stapleton, Colter Wall. They just don’t play them on the radio much is all.
I agree with you what most people whom didn't come up listening to this have no clue what country real music is.
This IS COUNTRY!! We need more like it!!
Yes!!!!
THIS IS COUNTRY FROM 50-60s era to guy who said isn’t. I listened to this .45 at 12 yrs old in the 80s, pre Army. I know every word. It is REAL COUNTRY! Got any George Jones, Or Waylon Jennings, old Cash anybody?
This is a good example of real country. I love the steel guitar in this song.
As a coup alchi learned to love this h

He might be. I don't know.

He died about nine years ago.
I agree with you 100% .
I worked with Mr. Cal Smith on a couple of recordings when I was 19years old, and was a good and kind man. You are right, they don’t Record good country songs like that anymore. I still sing this song as a tribute to Mr. Cal Smith R.I.P. Your friend Johnny! 😊

The original country and Western music. Wish it was still around
This song speaks so much truth!
SURE DOES!! I know A LOT of Mr. and Mrs. Johnsons who can't figure out how to mind their own business!
Quite possibly the best retaliatory answer ever put to music. I thank God that my folks raised me on this music. I was born in 1968 and I haven't stopped listening to it since!
Erm..."Harper Valley PTA" is right up there too! :P

Sometimes I wonder, why is it, Country Music from this early ages (60ies and 70ies) touches and moves us so deeply. Is it the warmth and mellow, the simplicety of the songs, it's predictable arrangements, this yodel-like sob in their voices. Anyway, what so ever: as we speak about C & W. it's just this episode that represents, what we call REAL COUNTRY MUSIC
renger29 they sang from the heart and soul. Most of them has lived what they were sanging. There will never be any legends like there were from that era
Sometimes I think that this kind of music became ashamed of itself and at that point the whole character of country music changed. The subjects about which men like Cal Smith and so many others sang were an acknowledgment of human frailty and desire to do better. Now I'm not sure what to call what's put out by most artists.
hart something the new stuff dont have
Lets, not forget the situations all of us encounter in our day to day livees
Because its the purest and cleanest and original.

A country classic
Hello 👋
This is real country music .
This is real country music. Cal does a wonderful job of singing this country tune.
Hey how are you doing..?
I had the chance of playing with mr. Cal one time. It was 1973 and I was age16! There were four of us, and we were back up singers. God bless you Mr. Cal Smith. Johnny!😊
True American Country Classic Music
I'm not a saint! God loves all his creatures! The good, bad & ugly! The ancient of days, has paid the price!
Amen!
One of Cal Smith's best songs. This song is a lot of fun and makes a lot of sense when you think about it. In the key of A in 6/8 time. I remember I sang this song to a friend of mine at the school for the blind. This is the kind of song that works very well for an acoustic guitar. I didn't have my martin guitar at that time, but it still sounded very good. My friend told me she enjoyed the song.
One of the greats, God rest Cal Smith
Terry Connor
What a spiritually dead and worldly song! Ask yourself: Are you a self righteous biddy or (will you be found righteous in Christ our Saviour) because of what He has done at the cross for you? We must remember that the gospel message says it's not our righteousness that saves us but His...otherwise you're just a religious hypocrite like every other pharasie of the world's pagan religions; trying to earn your way in to heaven. That is a slap in the face to Christ. You were bought at a price if you're trusting in Him.
Dan that's the problem; the man singing the song and the self-righteous Mrs. Johnson both don't realize it!
Tell Lorie I love her
I didn't know he died until just now. He died 10-10-2013.
Terry Connor he’s still alive
This was when country music was music. Not that cross over stuff they do today. I miss hearing Waylon and George Jones and Tom t hall and buck owens so many of our older singers that knew what country was. And will tell you can remember many Saturdays when staying over with My grandma and grandpa. Watching hee haw . Oh to go back.
This 62 year old Latino loves old Country and Western music.

He actually warns against about being a hypocrite.
I think he can defend himself if he indeed was using sarcasm. Jesus says we should not judge. Yet there is much going on in many of these comments.
Drink lie and steal on Saturday go to church on Sunday
I don't know who Rex is, But this song is an oldie that fits Stuffed snuggly in current times - 2017 - Moore, Alabama Republican - doesn't even have this much candor. Hell damn, that used to be normal back when Moses an 'em hooked up? I am a Christian, by Faith, not by Man's definition. I abhor this frame of mind and pray for people who are still so barbaric...
That's why I LOVE this song, because I drink, I smoke, I am judged on those basis - my true character is generally not considered. Roy Moore is 'Mrs Johnson' - even down to the bitty.....
I'd trade a million Luke Bryans to have this fella back.
And I'd trade a million Cals for Ol' Hank...
Who’s Luke Bryan ?
Amen sister!
Copy that
man, have you got it right?
I would sacrifice any current country singer for this man and any other country singers from 1960-1989. I was born 1960, and grew up hearing the classic oldies when new. Thank God!!!!
I was born in '63, so you and I are practically the same age, and I couldn't agree more!
I love this song. There's truth in the lyrics. I don't judge and I don't drink. Still, a GREAT song!
You judge every day of your life. We all do. If we didn't the human race would have died out long ago.

@@someoneanonymous775 Maybe the majority of Christians should start looking to Jesus as an example. I see very few of them out feeding the hungry and giving shelter to the homeless. I see far to many bragging about being Christian and being saved and very few humbling themselves to be a help to others.

"Mrs. Johnson" reminds me of so many 'holier than thou' types that I've known throughout my 40+ years of life... When I was a young'un I actually would let them make me feel like a "bad person," but now that I TRULY accepted Christ in my head and soul, as my Lord & Saviour, I realize that I *AM* a sinner as we all are, but little by little I'm working on improving myself, and I truly repent for my past sins... But *everyone* knows one of those "Mrs. Johnson" types, who goes to Church every Sunday, sometimes more, and is great at "talking the talk," but seem to have that " do as I say, not as I do," type of attitude! All I can say is "When I talk to heaven, I'll put in a good word for YOU!" ☺☺☺
