"It's Time to Pay the Fiddler" would be Cal Smith's third and final number one on the country chart. The single stayed at number one for a single week and spent a total of twelve weeks on the country chart.
    Grant Calvin Shofner (April 7, 1932 - October 10, 2013), known professionally as Cal Smith, was an American country musician, most famous for his 1974 hit "Country Bumpkin."
    Smith was born on April 7, 1932, in Gans, Oklahoma.

    Heard this song today for the first time on Willie Nelson's Roadhouse. Love it and so profound. They don't make music like this anymore. Sad.

    My grandfather took his last breath on February 11th, 2024. As he left his earthly vessel the words: “and it’s time to pay the fiddler” rang out of Cal Smith’s mouth. True story. He always had a sense of humor. RIP Gramps

    This is the very first time(I was just searching the internet)I've ever heard this song.. Not only is it a very catchy tune but also ( 2 ME)The mssg. was heavy... So for me it's time to pay the fiddler..Tks for posting so pardon me as I kick back and have a beer and enjoy the song again in a positive frame of mind... GOD Bless us ALL..

    I first heard this song in 1975 when I was working in Grande Cache, Alberta, Canada which was a coal mine and it so brings memories back from that time every time I hear it.
