Heard this song today for the first time on Willie Nelson's Roadhouse. Love it and so profound. They don't make music like this anymore. Sad.

My grandfather took his last breath on February 11th, 2024. As he left his earthly vessel the words: “and it’s time to pay the fiddler” rang out of Cal Smith’s mouth. True story. He always had a sense of humor. RIP Gramps

I first heard this song in 1975 when I was working in Grande Cache, Alberta, Canada which was a coal mine and it so brings memories back from that time every time I hear it.
