As a christian you arent supposed to be like everyone else. You are supposed to be different so others notice and ask why you are different and in that way you can witness to them about Jesus.
ohh..if my mom could have lived to view U Tube before she passed away..It would have been like the best birthday gift she could have ever received ..I miss you momma
I’m sure everyone has a memory of this song, I sure do and I had a great Dad. But oh he enjoyed! Hey so do I and hey it hurts no one and feels good too! Thank you country music!
Thanks very much for this TV show live version of this song. Cal sings the best on this live version as he gives full value to every note. The studio version is good, but this is even better.
This song has an interesting history for me. Years ago (MANY) I had a friend who was of the Pentecostal faith. I'd never been much for organized religion, so I wasn't a frequent churchgoer. However, my friend would manage to rope me into going to church with him about once a year or so (I was baptized a Catholic, and so I was far removed from the Pentecostal church). On this one occasion, they had a small bandstand set up and sang their church songs with music accompaniment. I fooled around with the guitar a little and my "friend" told them I could sing - so they urged me on until I had no choice. The only problem was, I didn't know any church songs. I said. " I only know one song that even mentions religion." They replied, "WELL DO IT!!!" I guess I don't have to reveal which song I did. It involved drinking - but not sacramental wine, if you catch my drift.... They were nice about it - and quite cordial. Or maybe they just had their rakes and torches locked up. Having talent isn't always a good thing.
Well, the Pentecostals are a welcoming breed, for the most part, and all of those I ever knew had a few cards missing from their deck, anyway - so who knows what they actually found "entertaining" and whether or not they even recognized the irony of the song with the surroundings. That isn't to say that all Pentecostals have a screw loose - just the ones I've met (not a lot, but enough to consider stereotyping).
Actually, I think I would have to agree with you. My friend ( a very good friend in spite of his family attributes of being borderline inbreds) was very religious - however, just before he passed on, the very last email he ever sent me was of a woman doing a striptease (graphic). I still have it to remember him by.
My mom introduced me to a lot of the music that I love and it's like the air I breathe and don't judge me Jesus is the only one that can and he knows I'm drinking so I don't care what you think
One of my favorite country songs because it's the truth. None of us are perfect (including Jesus Christ), and we get tired of hearing self righteous people acting like they are.
Puts chills up n down.... Too bad about the only place you can find great music anymore is on the internet. When I was a kid I would listen to nothing but the classics such as this... They don't make sound like this anymore, shameful.
Well, well. I have a confession to make. When I was young man doing what young men do I guess, my mother would often (always) give me a hard go of it when primping to go out. She would confront me each time and each time I would start singing this song “The lord knows I’m drinking and running around”. Things always got worse when I did. Wish she was here today.
Does anyone know the story on what was making Cal start getting tickled at the end of the song. Was Porter or perhaps Dolly acting up trying to make him laugh? I’m thinking the set behind is from their show. Thanks
The BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST SHOWED PERFECT LOVE AND GRACE, FOR US TO ACCEPT FREEDOM """FROM SON SLAVORY""" . BESIDES GST RID OF YOUR OWN demons than you'll be wanting others t o BE FREE ALSO
Lyrics never did specify why he called that woman a hypocrite and a gossip. Kinda made me think he thought she wasn't allowed to come in a bar because of her faith. That's hypocritical. Hmmm. Guess there's a reason I'd never heard the song before.
So much better than the crap that comes out of the mouths of those such as Taylor Swift. The only thing swift about her is how fast she goes through boyfriends.
JEFF, must of heard me. I have been saying for eons that Country music today; for the most part. is crap. I, liked his song country Bumpkin even better!!!
slumming.....know what this means children? back in England the richest folks would leave their palaces and see how the paupers live in slums and waterfront misery....thus slumming.....
This is the number one "Cheap Grace" song of country music. Cheap grace is the false theology that one's will trumps God's forgiveness. It's saying, "I believe in Jesus, but he has no real authority over my life. No matter what I do, God has to forgive me." The real hypocrite of the song is the one speaking to Mrs. Johnson who came to see him in the bar. Christians do bear the responsibility to hold other members of the body accountable in love (Matthew 18:15-17). If this is not true, then Paul and the other New Testament writers were wrong to admonish the Church for its sins in their epistles.
I'm Mrs Johnson, and I love this song! Cal Smith is one of the best old singers
Best kind of song. It tells a story and makes you smile. None of the crap on the radio these days even comes close.
Pure country gold! Lyrical PERFECTION!
This is a great song!! And, what a cute smile!! ❤️❤️❤️
Real country music and this guy was one of the best singers.

Country music's most underrated singer.
Truly a great country song in the cannon of the greatest country western songs ever made. Every time I play this in a bar, everyone claps.
I'm a baptist by faith, love god and I love this song. I drink smoke and party but I'm no different from anyone else. SO DON'T JUNDGE ME
When you point a finger, be sure you know where the other 3 are headed.
Ok, I won’t JUNDGE you!
The Good Lord Don't Cotton to No Drinkin and Such!!!!
Didn’t Jesus tell us to repent?

Thanks for the chuckle this morning. I would have paid money to have been a fly on that wall. 😆

My aunt was very close to being just like the women
in this song. Her name
rather fittingly, was Mrs.

By the way, she was also a
Pentecostal, and very
difficult to reason with.

One of my favorite country songs because it's the truth. None of us are perfect (including Jesus Christ), and we get tired of hearing self righteous people acting like they are.
I didn't know this song until it started. I slept with the radio on when I was little
Puts chills up n down.... Too bad about the only place you can find great music anymore is on the internet. When I was a kid I would listen to nothing but the classics such as this... They don't make sound like this anymore, shameful.
