  • David Frizzell performing I'm Gonna Hire A Wino
    Lyrics:
I came crawling home last night, like many nights before:
I finally made it to my feet as she opened up the door.
And she said, "You're not gonna do this anymore."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall."
She said: "Just bring your Friday paycheck, and I'll cash them all right here.
"And I'll keep on tap - for all your friends, their favorite kinds of beer.
"And for you, I'll always keep in stock, those soft aluminum cans.
"And when you're feeling macho, you can crush them like a man."
She said: "We'll rip out all the carpet, and put sawdust on the floor.
"Serve hard boiled eggs and pretzels, and I won't cook no more.
"There'll be Monday night football, on T.V. above the bar.
"And a pay phone in the hallway, when your friends can't find their car."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall."
She said: "You'll get friendly service, and for added atmosphere.
"I'll slip on something sexy, and I'll cut it clear to here.
"Then you can slap my bottom, every time you tell a joke.
"Just as long as you keep tipping, well, I'll laugh until you're broke."
She said: "Instead of family quarrels, we'll have a bar-room brawl,
"When the Ham's bear say's its closing time, you won't have far to crawl.
"And when you run out of money, you'll have me to thank.
"You can sleep it off next morning, when I'm putting it in the bank."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino, to decorate our home,
"So you can feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"When you and your friends get off from work, and have a powerful thirst.
"There won't be any reason, why you can't stop off here first."
She said: "I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home,
"So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam.
"We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall.
"And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall."

I'm 34 an listening thanks to my papaw and my little granny helping my daddy to raising me.
Brings me so many many cherished memories and I'd give anything to have them back with me to make many more.
Sometimes feel I'm losing my mind worth them not here.

When this song was popular, my parents owned a bar in a small farming town, and if I heard this song once a day, it was a VERY slow business day. I remember being willing to pay to NEVER hear this song again before I was 20; now, at the age of 58, all I have to do is think of the title, and some of the best memories all come flooding back in an instant. Let it be a lesson to all that you never know what your favorite memories will be while you’re busy making them.

Thanks for this comment, you make a good point.
I first heard this song in Boston, on an Album Oriented Rock station. Not their normal cup of tea, but the morning drive dj thought the song was priceless wanted to share it.
It reminded me of the small farming town that I was from.

I remember David Allen Coe You never call me by my name, whenever that song was played at our bar everybody would sing it loud and proud!!! Your absolutely right, the memories I have are so great to look back on!!! Many years of being a biker and just riding drinking and having fun!!! Wish I could go back and do it all over again!!!

I wasn't a wino-I was more beer and liquor man. I was a functioning alcoholic. I quit Christmas Eve 1981 because of a sacred promise to a 6 year old little girl I latter adopted. I married her mother January 28, 1982 and we were together until my wife passed away September 18, 2017 from a stroke. I am happy to say I have never relapsed even when my wife died.

My mama use to have this song playing ever Sunday afternoon when daddy came crawling home after being out all weekend.. Which was ever weekend... My brothers&I use to hate Sunday cause they were going to fight.. There is 1× I remember my parents got in a fight with coffee and corn starch😅😅.. My baby brother was old a month old so there was plenty of corn starch in the house.. That's the only time I can remember my brothers and myself laughed our butts off when they were fighting... To see two grown people throwing coffee and corn starch on each other😅😅... It took them 4hrs to clean up all the coffee and corn starch off the walls and every piece of furniture we had😅😅😅

Jody Lee my grandmother loved her wine but my grandfather had to limit her intake. He made his own wine which was kick ass and gave my grandmother a mason jar full each day and that was her limit unless they got company she would get extra. I often drank at ten am so she could have her extra glass or two and we would put on this song and sing like rock stars lol. I sure do miss her

Ironically, it was potent Country Music like this that planted the alcohol consumption meme in me to start with. (But it was probably Johnny Horton's "Honkey Tonk Man" that really kicked THAT "snowball" down the mountainside, but this song wasn't even a "speedbump" to get my drinking/barhopping to slow down. Fortunately age has played a vital role in imbuing me with common sense when it comes to the behaviors described in this song😂)
