I'm 13 and I've been doing parkruns since 2021 but at the end of 2022 i started doing them as often as possible and today i ran a PB of 19:51 as im getting really into running but anything below that seems crazy!
Often start at 8am in Perth, Australia. Flight arrived late on Friday night so little sleep + 7 hours jetlag coming from UK + early start when I went to a parkrun in the morning!
Starting a marathon at 12 is totally fine because you can get enough sleep and it's not too cold at the startline. It's also way better for spectators.
Ideal conditions for spectating are often opposite to running, I’d want 70°F and sunny for every race I watch, but that’s a nightmare for racing a marathon and trying to break a PB
Nice video man! I ran the Stockholm Marathon this weekend, my first marathon, and man it was harder than I expected.. And it was a bit hot but made my goal of under 4 hours (with about 30 seconds to spare)! But I wanted to say, despite it probably being colder in the morning, I like the starting time of 12.00 because I'm just not a morning person! 😂
Great video Ben, brought back some “interesting” memories of my Stockholm marathon effort in 2014; set off waaay too fast, struggled with cramp, weather was shocking and I ended up getting changed in a stinky portaloo. But had a brilliant long weekend in a wonderful city, I really should go back. Good to see some parkrun content too, keep up the good work.
My big fat guess is that the company who bought the rights to broadcast Stockholm Marathon told them to start at noon, because it suits their programme schedule and enhance their chances of selling commercials. Stockholm Marathon is broadcasted on national tv with alot of commercial breaks. And hey - you nailed the coffee order!
It has been starting at noon a long time before they broadcasted it. They have come to the conclusion that it suits the infrastructure better to start at 12. For me who travels from a city some distance away from Stockholm, its a perfect time. 😊
All this Stockhölm content is making me want to venture over the next time my mate is there with work! Seems like a great running community over there 👍🏻
Love Hagaparken, love your videos about Sweden & especially Stockholm Ben having also lived there. You should do one on Kiruna! Loved my visit to there, not sure if there’s a parkrun up that far north!
Your park run times back in 2019 really made me think about how it takes a LOT of time to get faster, I ran a 35:51 after about 4 months of proper training, after about a year and a half of on and off struggling because of injuries (pretty much chronic shin splints), but now I feel I've hit somewhat of a premature plateau in my performance. I wanted to ask, what were some of the key types of sessions that you would say, looking back, primarily helped with your massive performance increase over the last few years?
For me it wasn’t about sessions and more about just the consistency over months and months. I equate aloe of my running improvements to increasing milage and building my aerobic base :)
Did STO run last year - similar temperature and waaaaay too hot to run in the middle of the day. Plus it’s not the flattest of the courses. Nice for spectators, not so nice for runners. Also consider that the training happens in the colder months, so the rapid heating in early June is a bit of a shock as well for the body.
@benisrunning can’t believe you’d forgotten it started at 9.30 when you’d done it 9x before. I think all the Nordic countries and Scotland start at 9.30 because of the dark mornings in winter.
Good luck with the language learning. You'll find Swedish and English share a lot of similarities in regards to both vocabulary and grammar. I would recommend trying to read some Swedish newspapers and perhaps watch some Swedish news broadcasts to help as you start to learn as well. I think these are easier to start out with than watching a TV drama or reading a novel.
Good effort Ben. Another day who knows ? Just this weekend your Parkrun record at Markshall Estate was taken down by Dean WIlliamson In 15:15. Great If you could go back & challenge that some time perhaps ?
Drop Coffee is the best! Subscribed to their coffees for years, always top quality. Great vlog Ben. Stockholm will maybe be my first marathon next year or so, pretty new to this thing. It looks to be a grind of a course tho. Haha!
I'm 10 months late but catching up on your content as a new Swedish subscriber. Welcome to the west coast at some point, perhaps a Swedish classic half marathon ie "Göteborgsvarvet" 😊
Duolingo is also a great learning app! I have been learning Swahili ( Kenyan language) for ( about )one year. And I am making great progress! Tutonnana baadaye!
Hi Ben great video ! I am doing some parkrun tourism in Poland and I was wondering what camera did you use to film from your point of view and can you attach it to a cap ;)?
Very much not a fan of the Marathon starting at 12:00. In June its just too hot, even in Sweden. I recently ran the WingsforLife run in Vienna, which is an amazing event, but it started at 13:00 with >20 degrees celsius so almost impossible having a good race. I dont see a single good point in starting a race so late, but idk, maybe there is reason why the Stockholm marathon starts so late
I ran the Stockholm marathon on Saturday. My goal was to run sub 2:45 and I was on schedule until 30k , but after 30 k I blew up because of the heat. I don’t it is think a smart idea to start a marathon so late in the day 🥵
@@BenIsRunning Great, I have some action camera too and was trying to record my routes with a chest strap, the result was unacceptable... I guess I have to buy a head one. Thanks for response ;)
I see that Sweden is a bit strange A big marathon start at 12am on Saturday? How about that😂 why do they not change that to Sunday with start time 8.30 or 9.00? Are there not hot in june?

Very thankful for the community here on UA-cam that makes it all possible
In case you ever travel north, Scottish Parkruns start at 9:30 as well 🏃🏻👍🏻
Oh right interesting! Wonder if theres a reason behind it?
Is it because the darker mornings in winter?
9.30 start in Northern Ireland too
@@BenIsRunning Just the higher lattitude and darker mornings, particularly through the winter
