@@kellysmithermanit's much more easy to shave 15 seconds of a 20 minute 5K PB versus 15 seconds of a 15 minute 5K PB. It shouldn't be that hard to progress and push to sub 19 and on. Difference in speed needed for 5K in 20 minutes versus 15 seconds faster is 0.19 km/h and for 15 minutes versus 15 less is 0.34 km/h. So more speed is needed and more difficult to go faster when you are already going fast (air resistance, physical limitations, and so on). So it depends on how fast your PB is how difficult it is to shave of 15 seconds. You can do it! 💪
@@user26912 definitely true. Unfortunately I pushed myself to the extreme however and now I am injured massively. Can barely walk, so my 5K track race in a couple of weeks where I was going to give it everything for the sub 20 is no longer happening. Turns out, I'm not a machine. CRYING. Hope to be back asap but that sub 20 will be even more difficult. thank you though :D
Really brilliant aesthetic from the new camera, the voice over sections, and you doing those pieces to camera. When you mix it in with the more usual hand held sections etc it really keeps things fresh and interesting all the way through. A brilliant piece of work. Great to see Ben, nice one.
Congratulations Ben 👏🙌 you rock 😃 Have to tell you my PB form 25 years ago when I was racing was 21:52 (close to your warm up time! I'll never see that again but I still love running and love watching your videos! Thanks for taking us along!
Noticed the step up in stylistic production. The “walking towards camera speaking” felt like something new, too. Nice one, guys. Also, your warmup is only slightly behind my threshold pace, LOL
I wondered if it was a different camera at the start of the video, I really like it. Also really enjoyed watching the race with the voice over. It really felt that everyone was competitive but in a sort of supportive way, ie by pushing the group then you can better yourself. Really well done on the race, you seemed to have a great mental attitude going into it!
Amazing effort, Ben!! Well done! I’d say you redeemed yourself and then some. I’ve got my first proper 5k in a few weeks. (Plenty of time before Fall marathon) so hopefully that goes well. Anyway, job well done, man!
So not only did you get a new 5k pr, (even if it's just 1 second, it's still a pr man!), but you also won that hot chocolate as well :D 10:25 let's goo Ben! I ran a 2 mile time trial last week and ran a 12:37 which is 58 seconds behind my fastest ever 2 mile time (11:39) but to be fair, I haven't ran fast in a while and took a 2 week break before that as well, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do after I do some months of training in XC and in the summer! Really wanting to break 11 minutes this year, break 18 minutes in the 5k, and of course the infamus (is that how you spell it Ben? Infamus?) sub 5 minute mile! Love that grind Ben!
Nice work Ben. It's amazing to see your progression. I am probably twice your age and I wish I had dedicated some of my younger years to the sport. Just wasn't interested at that time. I do think the new camera you rented is a massive upgrade. I noticed it right away. As always love your channel and seeing your adventures.
I believe that the rulebook says that a competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway…unless there is another competitor in his or her path. I suspect that the Highgate Harrier violated the rules.
Smashed it Ben! Well done. Camera quality is great, would say downside is tone down on the random 1 second shots successively. First 20 seconds of video for example, bit of a distraction / headache lol.
Actually thought to myself that the video looks noticeably better early. Much better focus and audio sounds great. Keep that one! Now when are you going to get Josh Kerr on yer podcast?
You must be getting big time, the bots are out in force in the comments 😂 Seriously though, watching a lot of different running UA-camrs there's been a few who have been gutted with their first race of the summer then smashed a pb on the 2nd or 3rd. I reckon that 14:56 is going to drop down further before summer's out !
Looking back at the race, I certainly feel like I feel asleep a little at 800m and then left myself too much at the end. Fine margins on the track but good to know for next time I can wind it up a littler further out
1:24 is it a bird, is it a plane... Not sure how you manage to keep a McDonald's down after a race. Then I watched Nick Bester and he says he sometimes has a pint and a cigarette!
Every race should be run without paying too much attention to a watch - especially if it's a short race like a 5K. A race is a race not a time trial, how fast you run is only part of the picture - the aim has to be to win the race (or at least beat as many people as possible) or die trying. Obviously you can't actually run that hard but that has to be the aim. Congrats on the PB. The 10K was just one of those runs - but not too unexpected as it was your first "short" race in quite a while.

Just track racing in my opinion. Very different to the roads. You naturally drift out to protect the position and I personally didn’t have issues with it. He ultimately had a faster kick at the end of the race :)
@@BenIsRunning alright, i see what youre saying. i still feel like it was kinda unnecessary, not that big of an event, not even racing for #1, guy looked up at u right after the finish like he knew he did something kinda unsportsman and to see your reaction.. you're a good guy ben, i would probably would have gotten a bit mad about that.
Cycling is strict on people holding their line in sprint finishes, and while the same speeds and risks aren't replicated in running, being spiked, elbowed, or face-planting a sprint finish aren't much fun. It seems to be happening more frequently, and every incident is another too many. It needs to be stopped before someone loses their teeth in a road race.
This was proper pacing (for a change). Knowledge known by older runners for decades already. Yet, one often hear the remark, tried to stay competitive for as long as possible. And I think. These young guns of today really take their time to learn.

Right!? Ben's warm up is almost my PB lol
Maybe I could do that on a bike but running it no hope 😢
Yep, that warmup in my country local 5k races will put you in the top 2% fastest runners
Not really. It's quick, but not that quick if you're running as fast as him
and speaking as nothing as happening x)
Only runners understand the tremendous effort required to shave off that 1 second for a personal best. Congratulations Ben on your new 5K record!
