    Also, the thing about Hyrox. If that's the thing you do and it makes you happy. Go for it. I run not because I'm great at it or even good at it. It is the thing that keeps me moving, improves my mental and physical health, and brings me joy. I just got a PR in the 5K yesterday - 24:08 - I'm the embodiment of mediocrity, but better than I'd ever done before. I bet most of the viewers are too. If someone's thing is Hyrox (or whatever), cheers. Go for it.

    • @Ze-Germanzuk
      @Ze-Germanzuk 26 днів тому +10

      24:08 really isn't mediocre! I think too many people compare themselves to the UA-camrs that in reality are in the top 1% of runners if not top 0.5%... The average 5k time for men was something like 28mins so you're well above average!!

    • @silvermandavid
      @silvermandavid 23 дні тому +1

      @@Ze-Germanzuk I didn't say it was a bad time and I'm proud of it, but it is far from elite, but the point isn't about my time in the 5K. The point is most people fall into the "average" category range by the very definition of the term "average." Is that a reason to not race, not compete? No. Of course not. And if Hyrox is your thing, why should you let anyone "yuck your yum"?

    I'm an ultra runner/ mountain runner and recently exploring the idea of hyrox. Heres my view (nobody asked) I do get that hyrox can be a bit cringe as it's quite influencer heavy. But the main benefit I see is that most weight lifters could really benefit from some cardio focus and most runners could really focus with some weight lighting (both are crucial to a healthy and long life).. so this has just created an environment that allows people to test themselves.
    Plus the training isn't as intense and it doesn't leave you as knackered.
    Plus top end hybrid athletes looks better that top end runners/weight lifters (in my opinion)
    So I think hyrox / hybrid ticks a lot of the right boxes.

I love the way you are, you are simply amazing, one of us and still a hell of a runner. I started running (properly training with a coach) 6 months ago and did a 1h33 HM. Your marathon video inspired me to make my first marathon in a sub 2h50 time. I literally was doing an easy jog in the threadmill and I could see my bpm rising significantly because I was so excited for you. It will be 2-3 years of training for that, but I’ll make sure to print this and come back in one of your videos to say “I loved the grind”. Best of luck, you’re the best!!

    For me personally I ALWAYS run with a vest but for a very specific reason. I wear Bluetooth hearing aids and the Bluetooth is fairly low power. If I keep my phone in a pocket or belt on my waist or even an upper arm holder my music or audio books cut in and out, especially when I turn my head.
    My vest has a pocket that my phone goes in that keeps it up close to my head eliminating this issue.
    Since I’m running with a vest anyway I keep a house key and copies of my ID etc in it all the time so I can just “grab and go”, often without water.
    So yea, even on a 5K run you’ll see me with my vest!
    (Of course I total appreciate this is only applicable to me!) 😊

    Strava AI: I'll be interested to see where this goes. At the moment you can see it's trying but it doesn't actually _understand_ training.
    My favourite comment from it was (paraphrased but the last bit is exact words)- "you went faster than usual, good job. But your run was shorter than usual, maybe you should work on endurance."
    I mean, it's not wrong in that I could always do with improving endurance. But maybe it's just me but I can't do both faster _and_ longer simultaneously...
    By the way, if anyone does the Berkeleys, surely that's the epitome of loving the grind?

    I used to have a wooden ski tip in the hallway of our old house, it had all the medals etc, but after the move it is all in drawer. What I don't have any longer (I'm 67) is knee cartilage & meniscus to avoid bone-on-bone pain while running, particularly downhill. :-(
    BTW, if anyone thinks just running (track/road/trail) can be boring, orienteering is by far the most interesting way to engage both the mind and the body.
    EDIT: Since you appreciate Jasmin Paris and her totally amazing BM finish, you obviously realize that being able to navigate while running is good!

    I think what makes Hyrox so ick is that there's this idea that they're trying to make a new running category because they happen to have another hobby. I've seen a few races pop up hosted by hyrox/crossfit clubs that, instead of age groups, have weight groups. It's sooo ick.
    Why not just do decathlon? Those folks don't separate themselves into weight groups, they're just very good at everything.

    Interesting list. I’m confused about two things - the heart rate monitor being so high (more in a minute) and the massage gun in the bin while the Normax are in the MEH. I would put both of those in the Would Recommend or PB Material category, personally. On cost bases and ease of transport, the gun would probably go higher. I can’t express how much better I feel from a lactate elimination perspective after using the gun, especially, but also the compression pants.
    As for the HR monitor, there’s so much latency with these things that they’re nearly worthless for judging your current effort. If you want to know what your overall HR is while running a longer run they can be of value. One thing not on your list and should be there in place of the HR monitor, and I would have suggested it had I been an Instagram follower, is a Stryd power meter. Now that Olympian marathoner Clayton Young is using them and promoting them, maybe they’ll catch on. It’s definitely a pardigm shift in how you approach running, but definintely worth a look. (Garmin, Apple or other power meters on watches - avoid them.)
    Love the Grind!

      I was staggered she said the words "sugar" and "good for you" in the same sentence. Getting a carbs/starchy boost after a serious run is absolutely 100% a necessity, but a refined carbs boost?? All you're going to do with that is crash in five minutes.

    Hey Phily! I have a question about finding my lactate th. I ran my first half marathon with an average hr of 184 ( but felt my calves starting to tighten up a lot at about 17km), max of 192, all the time above 175. I fear I might do th sessions above my actual th. I did a garmin guided test and the lactate th could not be detected. Any tips on how to estimate it before entering my first marathon training block? Thanks for the fun video!❤
