The UK is home to many parkruns, but out of all of them, which is considered the UK’s hardest parkrun? For many, that title goes to Woolacombe Dunes parkrun.
One reason for Woolacombe Dunes gaining the reputation it has is because the route involves sand dunes. I recently took the JOG ON van the night before to find this ominous 5K, try it for myself and see if it really is, the hardest parkrun in the country.
Now knocked from the top spot of slowest parkrun, perhaps next, I'll have to check out Great Yarmouth North Beach.

Cheers to Woolacombe Dunes for putting on a spectacular 5K and thanks to you for watching. We're a very small channel, so if you'd like to, consider subscribing for more running adventures. If you like the look of the JOG ON Hoodie: www.thisisjogon.com/shop
Go for that run, and JOG ON
Inspired by you, I did the Woolacombe park run. I am not fast but it was EPIC. I wanted time to stand still when we got down to run the beach section. I wouldn’t have minded if running by the sea lasted forever. All the runners and volunteers (who I am eternally grateful for despite being one regularly myself) were brilliant company.
That first-timer's briefing guy gave an incredibly detailed course description.
He really did didn’t he. Superb for video purposes - he likely knows every grain of sand on that route. Dedicated.
Must be boring for the regulars though 🤣
@@4ndy123 Regulars tend not to attend too many "first timer's briefings" as it's inherently difficult to attend a parkrun for the first time more than once.
@@Wild96productions first timer briefings are usually given separately to the regular everyone gets it run briefing
Congratulations on getting that number 1 after so many years of parkruns. They say it's not a race. But let's be honest, who wouldn't like finishing first? The course looked awesome too!
Thanks Derek
I did Woolacombe 4 years ago in August - it was pouring with rain and up to 50mph wind gusts! It is still one of my all-time favourite runs and was absolutely beautiful! I want to go back and do it again.
Amazing, it's absolutely one of the best I've done
Cheers John
Great run and video Harry! Planning on giving this one a go soon myself. Congratulations on the 1st finisher!
Rematch with Sarah?!
It's the OG himself.
Thanks Ben, Great Yarmouth approaches - though judging from your video there I'm in for some painful legs.
All the best,
Harry
Please do mate, woolwcombe is one of my favourite places in this country. Make sure you eat at the woolacombe bay brasserie and say hi to the owner Sally for me! 😂
The coastal path between Woolacombe and Ilfracombe is well worth a trip down there as well. Awesome, stunning and ridiculously challenging. Love it.
Will take a look, some beautiful coastline around there
Congrats getting number 1, Harry! Those dunes looked energy-sapping for sure! Loved the reflections on the sand. It might be the hardest park run, but it looks like one of the most beautiful. Great job!
That mirror-like sand was quite something
Cheers Mike and hoping that you're doing well
Harry
That P1 came out of nowhere! Bravo! - Mack
Cheers Mack
Love this video Harry. Been watching a lot of your videos since I first discovered this channel a few months back. I usually put some of your videos on the tv at my parents and they all are hooked! Big fan from Sweden. Now we are waiting for “Visiting Sweden for a parkrun” episode! ❤
Hello to Sweden! Love this, say hi to the family too. Visited Sweden just once so far, hoping to get back one day and run there again. 🧡
Thanks for the support
Well played Harry tough course that one. 👏
It really was
Superb mate first place! Thanks for the parkrun sign addition at the start :)
Very welcome - great to have the community feature 🧡
This is on my bucket list!! That and Great Yarmouth!
Would highly recommend it. We should hopefully announce the date for a Great Yarmouth meet up in the coming weeks
I happen to be on holiday in Devon and visited that beach, it is very beautiful as you say. The scenic route looking over the beach is brilliant seeing all of the dunes.
It's still my favourite parkrun I've done
Congratulations on your achievement!
Thank you for watching and commenting
wowwwwww congrats on that first!!! and the resilience and pace on this was incredible i couldn’t even imagine running that
Cheers for watching
Nice video! I'm a 51 year old Yankee runner who just stumbled across your channel. I've been struggling to run a sub 20 min 5k in my 50's!
For me running on hard pack sand during the low tides is a way of life for me. Thanks for showing the healthy side of the UK. My last trips there were very boozy so running never entered my mind. Just drinking and spinning around on my folding bike. Now I'm inspired to go running in the countryside of England.
Love this comment, thanks for checking the video out. The countryside of England is calling.
I haven’t filmed any virtual trail run videos in the UK yet but it’s sure to happen someday!
Brilliant work Harry, possibly my favourite JogOn video. A story excellently told and beautifully shot.
That's awesome Conor - possibly my favourite parkrun
Wow. That was great, way to go Harry
Cheers Brian
👋 Brilliant video Harry and great to meet you on that very cold Saturday morning.
The man the myth the legend

I will subscribe and from now on watch every video you make for that Dog On comment
I might break it to you now that that was the first ever 'DOG ON' to feature
What a great video - well done on your first place. I marshal at Woolacombe Dunes most weeks and it is an amazing course.
Thanks Andrew, an amazing course
What a great view! congratulation on your first place💪
Thank you
Nice work. Here in the Lake District we still believe Whinlatter Forest is the toughest course, basically running up a mountain, come and try it!
It's always coming up in searches and conversations - will be visiting before long
Congratulations on position 1 👏 great video - it’s definitely on our to do list! New hoodie looks 👌
Would recommend it for sure. Thank you for watching
Well done Harry fantastic running I can't wait to do this one 👍 also looking forward to running the new one in Swanage 😤👍
Would highly recommend it as a route
Great video Harry. Was not expecting the 1st finish with bobble hat man so far ahead at one point!
Neither was I
A beautifully well put together video. Appreciate the hours taken to make this. And also well done on the run. 👌
Thank you Stu - one of the best kind of comments.
They take me multiple days to make so it's really appreciated.
Also, well done on having a much better beard than mine.
Harry
Nice bro. Well done on the 001
Thanks for watching
Brilliant run! and the composition is beautiful!
Thank you
Well done Harry, course looked beautifully hard.
Congrats on posting number 1!
Many thanks
Brilliant video covering the course! - makes me want to do this parkrun!!
Would recommend it Andy
Excellent video and amazing first place finish 👍😎
Thank you for watching
Great run well done on 1st👏👏👏. I've done Whinlatter and Woolacombe and was actually 45 seconds faster at Woolacombe (21.13 vs 21.59) but the conditions were quite good when I did it.
Thanks for watching, interesting
Fantastic video Harry, and well done on your first first finish!
Thanks for watching Sally
If you haven't already come to Cornwall and run the Trelissick Park Run!! Absolutely beautiful and absolutely has a killer hill!! A difficult and stunning course with some great people!
Sounds awesome Kim, hope to at some point
When away in England, I always make sure to do the local parkrun and this was one of them. The 'Dune of Doom' was certainly a shock to the system
Shock indeed
Marvelous stuff Harry 👏👏👏 And huge props to Louise for the filming 👌👌
It's a strange and rather niche requirement - you need someone who knows how to get the shots, whilst also having the fitness to be comfortable around 18:00 5K pace
You're a winner, Harry! 👍🏻🏃♂️
🧡
This is equal parts hilarious, beautiful and super inspiring. A unique and fantastic cocktail.
I'm drinking
Cheers Michael
Harry
@@thisisjogon It's the kinda drink you could sup all night long.
Fantastic video!
Another belting video.
Woolacombe is still my favourite parkrun. I'll be back in may.
I can recommend whinlatter forest as well for a beautiful parkrun.
I have great Yarmouth in my sights as well Harry. 🧡
🧡
Great video, really like the way that you have edited the footage together. 👍 well done on the finish time, that looked tough!
Appreciate that, it take a lot of time to do so it's great for someone to watch and comment.
Thank you, and yes - horrendously tough
Great job Harry! Keep the videos coming. They always get me inspired to run more.
Awesome, Lenny thank you and will do
what cinematography 🧡
🧡 📸
Ben Parkes just did Great Yarmouth. See if you can have a crack at 21:15
Ben is a gazelle, I am but a warthog. Still, one can try.
Great video! And well done on Position #1 🎉
Thank you for watching and commenting
Cracking video Harry 👍🏼💪🏼
Cheers Billy, hoping that you're doing well
Great course, great run, great video. CONGRATS on your No. 1 🎉 Must feel amazing… can only imagine!
Thank you very much and appreciate you watching
that's just amazing!! I love the mirror beach, and your message about having fun, brought me to happy tears!! Today is my 5k first for the year!! LETS GO!! I'm so excited!! I will report back on my time and how I feel. My running calendar says "your fitness is 100% mental your body won't run when your mind doesn't push it!!" LETS GO! HAHAHA!! 🏃🏼♀🤣 I'm excited to beat my own PB 😀
Ps, a few hours later I am happy to report a 5k time of 35:30 more room for improvement 🏃🏼♀️ as always, 🤣🤗
Well done Caroline - keep up the great work
What a another great wholesome video 🙌 you really do remind us of the fun side of running 😊 also, great job on the 🥇 spot 💪🫡
Cheers for watching 🔥
This is such a fantastic video. The workmanship in your presenting, filming and editing is top notch and I hope you achieve a bigger audience over time. I like that you cover a range of running experiences and abilities in your videos. It's fun to see you run with elite athletes but also heartening to see you encourage people of more modest skills break 30min over 5km. More power to you. Also props to the extraordinarily talented cameraperson (woman!)
Thank you, a lot of work goes in so it’s appreciated
Nice one Harry. Great video.
Cheers Peter, great comment.
Respect! You came first 👏👏👏🥇
I remember walking this beach as part of the South West Coast Path I have been doing last year, either with my wife with me carrying the tent in a backpack, or solo stretches with me carrying the tent in the backpack. The scenery is epic and a life changing experience.
But I am so happy you have made and shared this video. You actually deserved to come first because you and your video channel are so inspirational. Thank you Harry
Thank you very much, yes it's a superb area and some wonderful scenery. Thank you for watching and commenting.
absolutely brilliant
Cheers Isla
What a great parkrun experience you had -- Would love to give this a go - If over In Ireland - feel free to give me a shout as I have completed every single one on the island - We have a few beach ones but the hardest in my opinion is between these 3 -- Crawfordsburn, Castlehaven & Rostrevor; We also have one of the quickest runs in Belfast Victoria
Great UA-cam channel name This Big Lad Runs - we were having a conversation just recently about me coming over to Ireland on a small running tour.
Will have to let you know if it goes ahead.
Thanks for watching and bravo on your own running journey
Harry
Awesome Parkrun and pos 001! Well done 👏🏼
Cheers Tony much appreciated and thank you for your recent order from the shop
Defo order another pair soon to have in my arsenal!
I can confirm those sand dunes are a beast at Woolacombe.
Yup
Congratulations on the 1st, I've only achieved that on the infamous Parkrun doubles you could do over Xmas/New year when all the quick runners were hungover 😂
Many thanks 🧡
Great job Harry. Would love to give this one a go!
Would highly recommend
That was great Harry! You certainly gave that Dune of Doom a run for its money!
It also gave me a gasping session
I don't think I'd ever be able to come 001 in Parkrun must be a good feeling! But as you say its the taking part and enjoying that counts :)
Thanks for watching and hoping that your running is going well
Great video Harry. I live not far from Yarmouth, yet I’m still to attempt it after 50+ Parkruns in the bank. Would love to be there the same Saturday as you (although I’m sure you’ll be 10 minutes ahead)!
Hey Katie, yes hoping to get a date in the diary which I can announce and a group us can go
Hoping that you're well
Just found your channel, I find it motivating and entertaining. Now I just started running again after a 2 month break and I have my sights set on a certain event at Dalby Forest in june, if you fancy soemthing a bit different.
"Dalby's Inferno and the 10 Circles of Suffering"
A 5k loop through the Depths of Dalby Forest on the hour. Every Hour. For. 10. Hours....
Thanks for following the channel!
Sounds awesome, will look it up
Congratulations on token #1!!
Thank you for watching and commenting
Definitely come and try Gt Yarmouth parkrun!!
We just announced the date for it Rachel, see our Instagram
Top video Harry and congrats on getting the #1 token
Thank you for watching and commenting 🧡
If I want to see something is so fun just join your channel absolutely loved the videos. Thanks Harry for sharing!
thank you!
Great running Harry. Definitely can confirm that Great Yarmouth North Beach parkrun is tough
Thanks Penny - I reckon it’s worth a trip
@@thisisjogon managed it in 32 minutes it was quite windy and rainy when I went. Would like to see if I can beat my time
Awesome video and congratulations on 1st place. Still can't get my head around the fact there is actually someone else running alongside you filming all your races without making a sound and basically effortless?
Yeah. It’s quite a niche role to be a JOG ON camera person, but they exist.
Used to go to Woolacombe all the time as a kid, those sand dunes are no joke! I struggled walking up them, let alone running 😂
Absolutely, they make you feel like you're nearly going backwards
Well done Harry. I might be wrong but I believe Steve Ovett used to train on those dunes during the 80's.
Fascinating - will have to look this up
My legs are aching just by watching that, so, I guess that’s my run done for the day!!
Burning calories whilst you watch
I ran Woolacombe Dunes in summer 2019. That dune is vicious on the legs - it’s like a travellator. Not helped by me cycling over from Ilfracombe (and the cycle back was tough on the legs too). Great course - would do it again if I was back in that part of the world.
Still my favourite parkrun I’ve ever done
Well done getting first on a very tough course
Tough is the right word Daniel
Good effort! Looking forward to seeing you attempt Great Yarmouth - it almost killed me! I may return at some point soon to try and beat my previous time. The only parkrun where I've been told to watch out for the seals! 🙂
It's going to interesting Steph, that's for sure
That Dune of Doom looked savage!!!
It really was Conrad
Hi Harry XenomorphUK here (sorry couldnt resist), Epic effort, its definitly on the list for me and the Mrs to do.
I did Great Yarmouth last summer just after the council decided to rake the entire course making it really soft under foot. Its the first time i had ever walked on a parkrun when running on my own, my legs were in hell and the hurt locker that day.
Its on my channel if you or anyone wants to see it, really hope you do go and compare it but the two courses are chalk and cheese as theres no hills on the Yarmouth one.
Keep up the amazing vids and JOG ON.
Hello XenomorphUK, thank you very much yes I'd recommend.
Will be hitting Great Yarmouth this year and yes will take a look thank you - it could be interesting.
Cheers for always supporting 🧡
Looks, um, fun(?!). I run all mine at Salisbury, possibly the easiest parkrun, as it's local. However the one and only one I've done besides is at Durlston in Swanage. I'm shocked to not even see it on the list of hardest Parkruns as they boast it to be the UK's hilliest parkrun. Now I'm not the fittest, but I am good at not walking when I'm tired and insetad plodding to recover heart-rate. That course had me walking with my hands on my knees for support up a particularly steep bit 50m(ish) stretch you had to endure 3 times. Would love to see you run that one. Beautiful setting too!
Will check it out Steve, thanks for watching and sharing!
Well done on your first place. At the age of 61 I'm not sure that will happen for me. But I never give up hope.
Have you done Whinlatter yet? I was 6 minutes slower than my normal time.
For me Whinlatter is still the toughest parkrun.
Never give up.
Whinlatter is often mentioned, I will get there at some point
SawyerJnr and I have this one on our parkrun bucket list for the W in our Namely challenge. Another great bit of content 👍
Thanks Colin
One day I'll tourist to this one, mostly just to try out the course as it looks so cool. Haven't tried great yarmouth but it is somewhat local for me (2-ish hours drive). Might try it one day xD
Would recommend it. Will look to do Great Yarmouth this year
Fab loved it
🧡🏃♂️
Surf that beach all the time . Walking back up to the car through those dunes carrying a surfboard after a 3 hour surf session . Now that really is a stinger LOL Great running dude :)
It's a really scenic place, big fan of Woolacombe
That was a pretty mad time for such a course, well done on coming first. Bobble hat guy will have to try again next week.
Thanks for watching 🧡
Congrats on getting the #1 token! The best I've ever gotten is #5 but I'm hoping one day I'll be able to reach #1. I've heard how hard Woolacombe is, I want to do it but it's so far for me haha so maybe in the future
If you get the chance, it's worth the journey - spectacular spot
Ah you make it look so easy Harry, beautiful place isn’t it ! Just walking back up those dunes is tough enough 😅
The dunes are spectacular whilst tough, thanks Bex
Woolacombe is a special location and a fantastic place to run. Congratulations on the run and a great video #jogon
Brilliant, totally agree. Thank you
Very much on my to do list. Except the Dune of Doom or Gladiator Travelator fills me with dread and I am a frequent attender at Ashton Court and people comment on that hill
It’s really tough but would definitely recommend it.
@@thisisjogon maybe later in the year when my legs are stronger and more used to Ashton court
Well in Harry! 1st!!! Awesome 👏👏👏
Appreciate you watching
I went there and got my body board and slid down the dunes it was so fun
That sounds like fun!
Great video definitely do Great Yarmouth I am a 17 minute 5k runner I could only do 22 minutes it is amazing one to do
Really interesting, we will see
That looked tough! Congrats on #1!!!! 😊
Cheers Archie!
Well done Harry. Marathon des Sables for the next video??
It’s the next logical step
Hoping that you’re well Neil
Congratulations to the slowest winner
The Olympics will be calling soon :)
Well done harry
Wouldn't it be great if the selection process was just them calling you 'oh hi, yep it's the Olympics here, we want you'
@@thisisjogon yeah, a casual "someone dropped out and we need a replacement, fancy a jog on the track ;)" , oh no, drops phone
You NEED to try Whinlatter parkrun, I feel it as an equal challenge filled with massive hills and trails; surrounded by amazing trees and wilderness! Will you take up the challenge?
Thanks for the recommendation - I’ll check it out
@@thisisjogon Anytime! Also gives you a good opportunity to check out our lake district if you haven't been before :)
@@azza6463 been many times, will always go again
I live about forty minutes from there and ever week I get up, contemplate that particular parkrun and think 'bugger that' and go to barnstaple,
Great comment, I'd recommend it - but perhaps this put you off further. Thank you for watching
@@thisisjogon it’s one I’m working up to, wanna get my times down under 30 mins consistently without killing myself to do it before tackling woolacombe.
I’d have recommended tamar lakes parkrun. It’s not but it’s really rather pretty.
Your 22:30 on this course is what i'm pushing for as 5k pb lol.
This course probably would take me more than 30 mins.
It was pretty crazy, with a decent effort you can probably + 4:30 to your fastest 5K time
Amazing! Was this from today? Number 1 is listed as unknown on their site
That would be some seriously fast editing on my part to have it out the same day
Lovely
Jubbly
I've done Great Yarmouth - it was brutal, but it's flat so not sure why it's scoring harder than what you've just done?!? Perhaps it's that funtastic north sea wind 🤣
I suspect simply because the surface is just so awful to run on for 5km
well done #1 🙂
Cheers
