    A fun thing is that sandwiches in Scandinavia are often open and quite elaborate and decorated. They get eaten with knife and fork. English people looked at me as if I was some weird posh animal when I came to the UK and ate a sandwich like that.

    Growing up in Scotland, our staple was a "jeely peece" - a sandwich with homemade fruit jelly and (if the monthly rationing still permitted) some butter. Decades later in Canada, why has no-one mentioned sugar sandwiches? The Dutch-Canadian kids in my classes would regularly bring butter-&-white-sugar sandwiches. So it's not only the Brits who erred on the (economically-necessary) side of excessive carbs.

      Growing up in Scotland I also had the jelly piece for lunch. My Mum was English and she thought it showed the stinginess of the Scottish to not even put butter on the jelly peace! When visiting my English grandparents, they would make the sugar butty (pronounce booty in Lancaster) . Loved the video!

    I loved this video! You guys are so funny. My wife is from York and I'm from California, so we've had many similar conversations (married 23 years). Of course, I know what a chip butty is!! She loves them, she puts malt vinegar on hers, no brown sauce. Loved the video. FYI - this is only the second video I have ever commented on - I was that entertained!!

    I grew up in Southern California in the 1960's and 70's, and never heard of a fluffer nutter until I moved to New England in 2001. It sounded disgusting to an adult, but I am sure I would have loved it as a kid. I have seen jars labeled 'Fluff' in the market here in New England that would have only been labeled "Marshmallow Creme" in California.

      @@TrueFoodTV I did run into some very old commercials from the 1960's & 70's on UA-cam for Fluff to make the Fluffernutter.. They never ran in California when I was a kid. I would have remembered the catchy jingle. Why does it not surprise me you are married to a Brit? You looked made for each other. Thanks for sharing him with us. I love your vids.

      I only learned of it as a young adult. My mother did not feed us sugary foods. Fluff tasted amazing for the first time as an adult! Now I feel the need to go to the store haha

    I am not sure you would consider this a sandwich but when I think of something very American that is two pieces of bread
    with a filling it would be grilled cheese sandwich. I always had it grilled with butter but some folks in the south where I grew up had theirs with mayonnaise also.

    My favorite sandwich is a Reuben which is corned beef, mustard, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut on rye bread. I don't know if it would be considered an American sandwich, though.

      Definitely an American sandwich there are disputed origin stories for it but they all trace back to the US be it Nebraska or New York City.

      @@randyward2766 If I had to make a guess, based on ingredients, I'd guess German Jewish. German for the sauerkraut and Jewish for the corned beef. There was a great Jewish deli near where I worked years ago and that's where I first had this sandwich. All this discussion makes me want one 😊😊

    In New Zealand I grew up with the best of both worlds; peanut butter and jam sandwiches, and bacon sandwiches for lunch in my school lunch box. I also love chip butties with fresh bread, butter, hot chips and sauce. The butter melts with the heat of the chips. Delicious. Now for lunch most days we have salad sandwiches with cold meat (either sliced ham from the supermarket or meat left over from dinner), lettuce, carrots, cheese, mayo, hummus, beetroot, tomato - all layered between 2 slices of bread. Fantastic.

    My favorite sandwich is the Turkey Bacon Avocado, with mustard, mayo, lettuce, and banana peppers on a 12" roll. Often called the "California Club" (because anything with avocados is Californian, I guess). The sandwich is meaty, savory, salty, tart from peppers and mustard. Delicious.

    So, American sandwiches as mentioned here, the BLT and PB&J. Personally, I think you might have missed a few (hundred or more). Think about the area where you live, what about a hoagie, a pork sandwich, the cheesesteak, just for a start. Most big old cities will have a few of their own.

    My Canadian grandmother, who had English parents, used to always make those ham and butter sandwiches when we’d go on picnics. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why her sandwiches always tasted so good. I always thought it was a Canadian thing. Neat to find out it comes from the UK.

    When I was a kid, our go-to sandwiches were either grilled cheese, egg salad, or cream cheese & olive sandwiches. But then one day we heard of a toasted sandwich with tomato, asparagus, and mozzarella -- and we never went back. SO GOOD.

    This isn't an established sandwich but my favorite sandwich when I was young was pineapple & mayonnaise on white bread. Delicious. A mixture of saltiness and sweetness.

    My family immigrated from England to Vancouver in the late 50’s. Consequently, I would be fed marmite sandwiches for school lunches in the 60’s to the horrors of my classmates. I can also remember sugar sandwiches. Lol. I still love cheese and Branson pickle sandwiches.

    Great video 😀 I love sandwiches. My wife is from South Africa with family in the UK so I have been introduced to things I never thought I would like. Love Branston and Picalilli especially with sausages. Adore HP sauce on steaks and curry anything...yum. Marmite on the other hand , yeah> NO. A favorite sandwich of mine is grilled chicken, smoked salmon, dill havarti cheese, red onion on a croissant. I am staying away from Mayo and going with butter these days, and adding pickles to sandwiches is quite deeelish. Not really sandwiches but sausage rolls and pork pies are 🥇

    We lived in Maine when I was a child. We would stop at a roadside stand and get a lobster poor boy. Just a roll, melted butter and fresh steamed lobster. Regular poor boys are great as well.

    1. Pastrami (not or cold but best with both. Heat half the meat)
    2. Corned beef Reuben
    3. Italian sub with peppers
    Or batter Fried cod or whitefish with cheese and tartar sauce (this is also first)

    Two sandwiches I ate as a kid, both on plain old store-bought white bread: (1) a jelly sandwich, no PB, just Welch’s grape jelly; my mom’s cold meatloaf, nothing else, just meatloaf - it sliced like Spam.

    San Diego County, we eat avocado, bacon (thick), tomato, minimal lettuce on sourdough bread that has been pressed into the fat drippings in the pan where the bacon was cooked! One has to balance the HDL and LDL fats!

    Fluff as a whole is generally a NewEngland / Northeast thing, Fluffernutters even moreso. Also, the many layered sandwich you're thinking of is probably the Dagwood.
    Growing up, our go-to sandwich entity was grilled cheese. Also, my grandparents were fond of cucumber sandwiches. They had a boat, and cucumber sandwiches were always the main part of the picnic lunch.

      I was very surprised when the fluffernutter was mentioned. My dad loved them. He was from the New York and Northern New England area. I got a few in my lunches over the years. Like Nicole, I have not fed them to my kids yet. They are a dessert sandwich.

      It's probably short for "buttered roll". In the states butt means arse, in Aust "fluff" is a politer term for fart

    Mozzarella, tomato and basil on ciabatta. Ciabatta looks very similar to the British rolls you showed. Might be a northeast thing with the prevalence of people with Italian backgrounds here.

    All time favorite was from a chain of stores in the Seattle area called Hoagies Corner during the 70’s-80’s. It was called of all things a Cheesy British. A hoagie roll with ham, turkey, roast beef, cheddar cheese, and lettuce, onion, pickle, mayo, and mustard. Obviously as we have learned in this video it isn’t authentic British due to the lack of butter….

    You say you don't like sandwiches for dinner... but I just have to ask: Have you never had a hamburger or hotdogs for dinner? And enjoyed it?
    I like the chip butty & bacon butty ideas... but I'd like to combine them with the Canadian poutine... I'd like a sandwich with some bacon and chips and brown gravy (poutine)... and maybe a fried egg and some cheese.
    Then it hit me: I've already done elements of this.
    One of my favorite sammiches is a fried-egg sammich, which is basically a BLT + egg fried over, medium or hard. I prefer ham instead of bacon and I always add swiss cheese.
    The other of those elements I like, which is popular among those of us who've tried it (IYKYK), is a cheeseburger with a layer of french fries (chips) INSIDE the burger.
    When you were talking about condiments... it would have helped if you compared those ferments to American stuff. It seems to me those were comparable to sweet pickle relish, which I like to put on my hotdogs. (I wonder if that brown relish was made with beets? It would explain the sweetness AND the color... I think.) BTW, "Piccalilly" reminds me of "Piccadilli" which in turn reminds me of Ghirardelli Square, which... "Mmmm, chocolate."
    When you spoke of Coronation salad and Waldorf salad, I'm a little surprised you didn't go down the side-dish salad hole, with our various picnic dishes, like potato salad, macaroni salad, etc. I'm curious what-all the Brits have that are comparable.
    AND if you're going to discuss sammiches, the next logical step is the meat-pie. British meat-pies are delectable. I've had them at my local Renn Faire and I'd love to learn how to make and bake them at home. We have pot-pies here in America, but those are much more soupy or stewy in comparison. Meat-pies and meat rolls are (IMO) the original sandwiches. The classic Brit meat-pie deserves at least a mention in this Convo. I'd love to know if the Hubby has a short-list of his favorite meat-pies.
    (Just don't let him say that's his pet name for you... or don't let him get away with it, anyway.)
    Oh. One last note (since I recently bought some croissants)... I also loves me some croissant sammiches! and I intend to slice a croissant in half, slather it with some mayo and pile on some ham and some swiss cheese and some fresh garden tomato slices and I shall thoroughly enjoy my croissant ham sandwiches. MmmHmmm!

    Oh man. Jam sandwich, peanutbutter & fluff, chip butty, that bap with sausages. I think we're building up to the ultimate question here..is a hot dog a sandwich? The answer is obviously yes.

    The most classic British sandwich is untoasted bread butter and sugar. Your mum would give it to you when you're sick

    I think the real difference between British and American sandwiches is attitude Americans like to create recipes whereas the britsh tend to think along the lines of if it fits on the bread it's good for a sarnie hence chips or crisps or pot noodle

    As a Dane we are blessed with great open sandwiches on rye bread (calling it open sandwiches doesn't make any sense). Using double the bread just seems cheapskate. Dense rye bread with lots of toppings is where it's at.

    I love sandwiches, but I hate curry, so the Coronation chicken sandwich is one I would never try. My favorite sandwich…. anyone I don’t have to make!! Lol! Anyone ever have a Wawa hoagie? I miss those. Can’t get them on the island I’m currently living on.

    There’s another interesting pronunciation difference that I keep noticing throughout this. She says SAM-wich. Is that a regional thing in the US? Because I’m from the Chicago area and I pronounce it SAND-wich.
    And of course my favorite iconic American sandwich has got to be a Reuben.

    Jam sandwiches were part of my life. We certainly ate them as kids, peanut butter did not exist in Communist Europe and meat was expensive and hard to get. So, bread and jam, butter if you had it, bread and butter and sardines, super cheap. When the pantry was bare, there was usually a tin of sardines left. But of course our sandwiches were not sandwiches. Always open faced.
