How to Diagnose and Fix a 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel that is Running Rough, Missing, and has No Power
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лип 2024
- My 2002 Ford F-250 with a 7.3 liter Powerstroke diesel recently began running very poorly. So poorly, that it could not be driven. It would barely idle, ran very rough, the engine shook violently, and the thing had zero power. In this video, I'll show you how terribly it was running, explain what I think was causing the issue, and show you how I went about fixing it and getting this truck back on the road and doing work.
Click on this link to purchase the super cool Milwaukee magnetic rechargeable work light you often see me using, you need one, trust me. (commissions apply) amzn.to/3es9a6v
Also, here is a link to parts similar to what I used in this video. My mechanic strongly recommended that I use genuine Ford parts to make my repair, and that's exactly what I did. I value his experience and opinion, so I recommend you do the same. The "off brand" parts on the other end of the link are much less expensive, and may help a fellow on a tighter budget. Once you click the link you can also explore around and find similar parts or other things you may need or be interested in. I have no history with these parts, so purchase and use at your own risk... amzn.to/30KwKDl

Mister, Thanks for the Video on the 7.3 connector under the valve cover. this is exactly what is wrong with my sons 7.3 because I saw the short on the valve cover and fixed it which is probably the reason the one inside the valve cover shorts out and melts; drawing too many amps the wrong way. We have been losing out marbles trying to figure this one out... Thanks again!
Thank you for watching. I am glad it helped and hope you got it all figured out.
The reason I like your video’s so much is that you do regular guy stuff and make regular guy mistakes and you’re no afraid to show us. Another great video. Keep posting them and I’ll keep watching.👍
Nothing describes me better than "regular guy". Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on my videos, it makes this regular guy happy to know you enjoy them. 👊
Sounds like tips from DieselTechRon. Thanks Diesel Tech Ron. The quarter trick. The temp gun to check the dead side. RIP Ron.
I never saw anything from Diesrl Tech Ron but he sounds like he was a smart dude. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video Brad, I enjoyed going through the diagnostic steps with. You've got a lot to teach.
So nice of you to say Dave. Thanks for watching! 🙏
Thank you for the vid. I own a limo service and had a breakdown on my e-450 02.. I was able to fix myself thanks to you. After that 2020 season I need all the help I can get to save money👍👍
Glad it helped! Nice work man. Hope 2021is better for us all. Thanks for watching!
01 F350 w/7.3 ... best truck I’ve owned in my 50 years of driving.
Thanks for watching man. I'm a Chevy guy, but pretty darn happy with my 02 7.3 as well.
Me2
Nice video, thanks for posting. I'm a Chevy guy also, have a 65 Chevelle, 2011 Camaro (well half in with my son), had many other Chevy cars and trucks over the years. And, I also have had two Ford Diesels including my 2000 that looks identical to yours. I have 236K miles on the clock and really not having any major issues. I like to scan these UA-cams now and then during lunch breaks just to keep educated for when I need to fix something. I like watching like minded guys like yourself. Thanks
Cool man thanks for watching. I hope the video helps you out if you ever have that problem with your Powerstroke.
Great video, and like those 7.3. Thanks for the video and have a great week.
Thanks for watching!
Good job !! Thank you for sharing !! Some wrench sets come without the 13 mm . I don't know if that's your case but I thought I would mention it ! Be safe and God bless you and yours !!!! Eddy
Thanks for watching and for the info Ray. Trey appreciates you trying to get him off the hook, but I'm pretty sure ours had a 13mm. It'll probably turn up somewhere...
Good job! I've replaced many of those back in the day. Great motor the 7.3 powerstroke. Thumbs up!
Thanks man. Yep, I've really had good luck with this old thing. Hope6she keeps on ticking a bit longer. Thanks for watching!
Ford scrap ida found a sucker and dumped if on him hahahahahaha all these channels working o Ford scrap will it run who the fuck cares leave it in the bush
You were absolutely right. My 7.3 was runnin rough and had no power!
Thanks for watching. I hope the video helped you out a bit. 👊
This video really helped my Dad with his truck, thank you!
I'm glad it helped. Thank you for watching and letting me know!
Soooooo I have to thank you for putting up this video. Mine is running super rough. Sounds like a freight train but thats an improvement since it's sat for the last 4 years at least. I had it idling and went to go look for that rub spot you were talking about, lifted the harness and she died. I can duplicate it 100% of the time so now I have to chase a short, but it's got me in the right direction. Idk if I ever would have found that issue without your video so thank you.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad it helped in some way. Good luck getting the truck back on the road!
I would have changed the fluids before startimg something after four years. probably dump some ar900 and 6500-d arch oil in it also for good measure on injectors
I'm not a ford guy but enjoy watching your videos. I've got my eye on the square body next to it. Yes I'm a chevy guy.LOL
Good video.
Thanks man. There will be some squarebody content coming soon so stay tuned friend! 👊
Great tech tip that I will remember. My 2003 F350 is still getting “broke in” at 285,000 miles but I’ll keep this fix stored in memory if I ever have the same performance issue.
Thanks for watching Bob!
This video is very helpful this problem was a 2 week hunt just for this the check engine light will illuminate if it’s still pending once the problem is corrected the CEL will go away
Glad it helped and thanks for watching.
I like the addition to the band aid. I have used electrical and masking tape on a paper towel around a wound.
Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes, huh? Thanks Ken!
With the MM sockets, you really have to keep an eye on the 10 MM socket. The 10 MM sockets always seem to make a run for it.
Already gone... haha Thanks for watching.👊
For me it's the 8mm sockets... that's why I have 3 of every tool... Standard for my great old Ford cars and metric for new Ford trucks and cars... my 2000 F-250 7.3 is a solid truck, in 22 years I change the oil at 5K but did have to put new front bearing hubs... only cuz as a Fool, I ran big fat tires and them things took out my hubs; run stock or tall tires on the factory rims and all is good
Ya for sure!! But once in a blue moon I’m looking for some oddball size and I find all my 10mm but never the one I’m looking for. And the cycle starts over again
I started having problems finding my most common sockets & then noticed that the rest of them were difficult to read the sizes on them after 30 years so I went into the house and got my shotgun and forced them all to run put of my garage at gun point so I could make room for sockets that were satin black with bright gold numbering. They are happy and stay put in their individual spots! At gunpoint!!!😳😉
If memory serves me, that's the same as a 'worn out' 7/16, or maybe its the 8mm.
Thanks. Gives me something to work on. Sudden rough idle problem appeared.
Dont have one, but I was looking to see common problems they have if I come across one, thanks for the info.
You bet Ed. Hope it someday helps you out. Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Great video, I enjoyed it a lot. I say bring on the Squarebody! I love them old Chevy trucks.
Thanks man. I love the old squares, too. I always look forward to working on that thing because it's my son's, and he is always a bit more fired up to get out in the shop if that's what we'reworking on. I'll gladly push my projects back in order to spend more shop time with Trey, so yeah, squarebody work will be coming soon.
Thanks buddy for all the tips 👍
Thank you for watching. I hope it helped!
great video. i now need to check my cylinder temps to find my problem
Thanks man. Hope it helps you solve your issue.
@@MontanaGarage it did. i found the whole driver side is cold. i will be dong a harness change, or fix tomorrow.
Nice fix Brad 👍👍
Thanks Jess. Got lucky this time.
Had one at work do the same thing. Same problem. Luckily they circled the problem for ya right on the grill. 😁
Ha. Funny. Thanks for watching man.
For anyone with this issue, the dorman gasket has no internal connector, and inner harness is hardwired as part of the gasket. Eliminates that point of failure, and have not seen anything but good reports as to function and durability as a gasket and wiring assembly.
Good to know. Thanks for sharing the info, and thanks for watching. 👊
Yep 👍🏻
Good job!
Awesome fix.
Thanks Greg. Got lucky...
Nice video I actually enjoy watching you do work.. good work, I'm jealous yours is running lol
Thanks man! Glad you enjoy it!
All in days work. Nice neighbourhood. Like to see work done on Fords.......I'm a Ford guy. Stay safe.
Hmm, not sure Ford guys are allowed here. Let me check the rule book... OK, we'll make an exception for you Brian, 'cause you seem like I good dude. haha Thanks as always for watching. See you over at BW's on Friday night.👊
@@MontanaGarage Understand the dislike for Fords. But my father was a Ford guy and I've always liked them. Have driven or rode in almost all the classic muscle cars and like them all. I just really like the Fords.
Talk to you on Friday. Stay safe.

I tilt my hat to you I'm 58 years old live south of Annapolis and I'm the same way but I've been turning wrenches for a while but I like your attitude to try
Thanks man. I appreciate you watching and commenting. 👊
Good video thanks for sharing. I’m pretty sure my 01 f350 is having the same issue as your truck did. I’m tearing into it this week to verify it is the under valve cover harness
Was that the problem? Hope my video helped in some way. Thanks for watching.
Yes it was the issue with my truck your video helped out a lot for me thank you for making it and putting it on UA-cam
Good advise. Talk more than need it. Thank you do
I'm not sure what you're saying, but thanks for watching man. 👊
You have a cool nomad back there. I’m envious of that lol. The old blood has a good color to it so it looks like you’re pretty healty. Lol as if you can tell by the color of your blood. Im having a similar problem with my 7.3 so hopefully this is what i need to do to mine. I have to tow my truck to the mechanic which is 100 miles away and pay them to fix it then have it towed back to me which cost $278 per tow. Every time it breaks down i have to pay $556 just in towing fees on top of repairs and parts. I’m in my truck for a fortune lol. I bought a new crate 7.3 engine and transmission right after i bought the truck. And I’ve fixed so many things on this truck since.
Thanks for watching Jake. I hope the video helps you get your 7.3 figured out without having to pay the towing fees! Good luck. The cool nomad is actually a sedan delivery, same thing only different, common mistake. I just posted anther video with it if you wanna check it out. 👊
Great job for a. “Not mechanic” The funny thing..... I have the very same type of black bandaids in my shop. My daughter laughs at my taped up fingers soo I will show her this video ha thanks. Jeff
Haha. Whatever works, right? Before you know it she'll be wanting the black tape band aids herself. Thanks for watching man!
Very informative video. I’ve been dealing with intermittent issues with my ‘96 7.3 Just when I think I’ve got it fixed it dies.
Bummer man. Good luck I hope you get it sorted out. Thanks for watching!
Sitting here on the side of the road waiting for a friend to tow me
home. Thinking I will be doing this tomorrow...
Hope you got 'er fixed and the video helped at least a tiny bit.
great video.. helped me a lot..thanks
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped you out!
Great find! But in the end it's time for the scrap heap.
Thanks for watching. Approx. 450000 miles now and still trucking! Gonna try and keep it out of that scrap heap as long as I can.
Good fix
Thanks Tracy. I got lucky this time. 👊
I need new valve cover assembly’s on my 97 7.3 I’m sure that will help my truck. Thanks sir
Thank you for watching. I hope that solves your problem.
I definitely never typed in anything like that man. I typed in 7.3 IPR. I would never say the truck is anything other than great engineering.
It has been a pretty damn good truck. Thanks for watching!
my FORD 2000 F-250 7.3 is a solid truck, in 22 years I change the oil at 5K but did have to put new front bearing hubs... only cuz as a Fool, I ran big fat tires and them things took out my hubs; run stock or tall tires on the factory rims and all is good
Sweet man. Glad to her. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thx!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated!
Never saw you do so, first thing I would have done is hook up a pc with forscan and looked at my IPR values. Would not have been the cause this time, but it is a frequent failure point on the 7.3l I have two of them, both have taken me out. Also the sensor, when others have stated to pull the plug and check for oil leaking into the connector, they are correct. The oil isn't hurting anything, but it shows the sensor it's self is failing.
Thanks for the tips. The forscan/IPR value thing sounds way to advanced for me which is why I used the touch the exhaust method haha. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Thank you so much sir! 🙏
You bet man. Thanks for watching, and I hope it helped! 👊
417,000 miles...Damn. I would say you got more than your monies worth out of that truck. Like you, I am a Chevy guy, but my son has a Ford focus, so I find myself having to work on that pos once in awhile. Lol
Gotta do what you gotta do, huh? Yeah, I think I got pretty lucky with this old Ford. Thanks for watching man. 👊
Check for the quarter when you do an oil change. When mine came lose, I found two dimes in the pan with the dirty oil. It still owes me 5 cents.
Haha. I'll keep my eye out. If you did it like me, you probably cut about 5 cents off that quarter to get it in there, so I'd say you're probably even! 😁
thanks for this video
You bet. Thank you for watching. I hope it helped.
Nice work on the diagnostics with no scanner! Out of curiosity, did you measure resistance of the glow plugs with the new harness? I have a ‘96 and those are notorious for melting harnesses when the 2 ohm glow plug drops to a short.
thanks for posting the video
To be honest I don't remember. Sounds like I should have if I didn't. Thanks for watching!
put the AFE intercooler pipes on and watch the gas mileage and power go up. Best mod I ever did!
Thanks for the tip. Ill check it out.
Great 👍job !
Thanks man!
Great Video. Thanks. Just curious did you say you change your Oil every 30,000 miles?
Thanks. I might have said that. I was just trying to get the point across that I do not take very good care of this thing, and it still keeps on going. Hopefully I've never let it go 30,000 miles, but i know I've let it go well over 10,000 miles many times before. Not good, I know. I should probably take better care of that thing...
Still not a bad price compared to a ship bill.👍👍😃
Yep, definitely cheaper than a shop bill, plus I learned a thing or two and had some fun.
Early 7.3's typically need new injectors and interior valve cover wiring around 300k miles. Replacing mine fixed 3 issues in one swoop. (Bad cold start, vibration while driving until at FULL running temp, and poor fuel milage). Use OEM components. Mine is a 01 with just over 252k miles.
Thanks for the sound advice. As I think I mentioned in the video, I tend to not be very good at the preventative maintenance. Something I need to work on... Thanks for watching!
@MontanaGarage You are going in the correct direction. Which is better than most, online.
When you want to see if your exhaust manifold is hot, shoot a little water on it, look for the sizzle, save your hands.
Oh I see Jack, you're one of those people that does things the smart way. Obviously I'm not. Thanks again for watching.
@@MontanaGarage Hey, I hope you got the battery cable fixed, that was still a problem. 417K is nothing to complain about, you get better luck with a ford truck than I do!
Its the injector harness for sure,l had the same problem
Yep, that is what it was. Thanks for watching!
Mine sounds like it’s doing the same thing the only thing is it’s not allowing me to keep the truck running to test the temp?!
Bummer. I'm not sure the best way to figure out where the problem is if it won't keep running. Sorry I cannot be more help. Good luck tracking it down, and thanks for watching.
HELLO. Hey. Nice JOB.
Thanks Harold!
Thanks
Thank you for watching Gary. I hope it helped you out.
so how did you know which side to replace?
Very unscientifically. I ran it a bit, then quickly and carefully touched each exhaust manifold. The cold side is the one not working correctly. You may want to use a different method, but it worked for me. Thanks for watching and for the question.
I would Never use electrical tape on a cut! Duck tape works better! 🤣 Nice fix Brad 👍😎
Thanks man. I've been known to use a bit of duct tape for a bandaid myself. Just grabbed what I had handy. Thanks for watching man!
-utI'm new at this. My 97 F250 7.3 HD Diesel starts. That is it. Try to accelerate but there is nothing. Can go into gear but apply gas and there is nothing. Checked transmission fluid - full; changed a very bad fuel filter and still nothing. Live out in the boonies so hard to get towed to a mechanic. What do you suggest.
Thanks for watching. Sorry you are having issues. As I said in the video I believe, I am far from an expert with these diesels. I have heard of a problem where the engine will only idle, and it was caused by a bad microswitch on the throttle pedal. It sounds like you may have an only idle situation, but I'm not sure. Here is a link to a quick goggle search I did that may or may not help. Good luck! www.ford-trucks.com/forums/879692-7-2-will-start-but-will-only-idle-no-throttle-response.html
im having the same issue but mine clears up after a min or 2 of it running but when i give it pedal it starts cutting out now once its running for a few its fine
Good luck getting it sorted out! Thanks for watching.
I have the same issue any tips?
What you did was take a redesigned valve cover gasket and fix what wasn't broke, to begin with. The original design didn't have a proper catch, so a Ford mechanic named Ron figured how to lock it together. They have since modified the gasket and it no longer comes apart. Not even sure if it would work properly on the new ones. Don't recommend anyone else break there's, just for something to do. Also, if you need to take off your up and down pipes from your inter-cooler again. Remove the clamp on the cast piece as opposed to the soft aluminum pipe. It's easy to crush those flimsy pipes over tightening the clamps when your re-installing them, where as that won't happen on the spider.
Thanks for the tips man. I saw where lots of people recommended to add the quarter, but now I know it wasn't necessary. I appreciate you watching.
@@MontanaGarage No problem, welcome. Figured you should know why it was necessary. Save someone else from messing up their new set. They work well.
More plastic moving parts means more problems I have owned a couple 97's 94 couple 91's and a few late 80s the 73 IDI is a good motor also is the 69 it is built more like 12 valve Cummins you don't need much to fire it up you can get your glow plugs right on top you can get your injectors right on top only downside is it's doesn't have a lot of power that motor unless you put turbos on it I like it but I alternated like the 73 Powerstroke even the 12 valve but when it comes to reliability I've had some issues with the truck that'll just minor it has a 1997 I bought it from the original owners single cab Lariat four-wheel drive with the Dana 60 Dodge model it's been a very good truck it's got its issues couple of the transmission lines I've had to fix a few times cuz they rub on frame and minor things brake lines Etc you know what's a 25 year old truck but man that motor runs good everyday we'll see you in a couple years I want to preserve its life and take the motor out when I have another backup vehicle that I know is solid and dependable. And just do light reseal and so forth and the next thing when I get back to the 73 Powerstroke sat there very temperamental Motors it seems like I do more messing around with that 73 than any other ones I'm fixing one now I've owned for about five years I just put all new glow plugs it does seem to start easier in the cold now unless smoke I've had the motor out of the truck once and almost out of the truck twice from the first time I pulled the trans the trans went out a few years ago about 4 years ago put a new clutch in whole new Trans in all new tires brakes everything it is a wrecker on top of it and they did not take care of it very well so I've sunk a lot of money what really upsets me is having the engine up out of the truck it's always ran pretty good when I the first time I change the oil pan cuz it was starting to leak Isis you know what I got the trans out I am going to do rear main seal new Trans with clutch new oil pan and oil cooler gaskets I did all that and it still started to leak even with the Ford Motorcraft after about a few months that Ford Motorcraft gray sealant and I left the engine sit a few days before I put that ceiling in the pan back on hoping and praying that it would not leak so about a year-and-a-half later then it started to really get bad and about a year later the height the truck did not want to fire at all so I wind up putting a brand new high pressure oil pump in it I bought it to O'Reilly's I don't know if it was a genuine Ford Motorcraft but it cost me over $500 I reinstalled that new braided fuel lines truck is pretty much been kept inside its whole life as being in a Service Garage a tow truck pray small service station gas station and when I purchased it back in 2016 it needed quite a bit but the motor ran great but ever since I replaced that high pressure oil pump it seems like it takes awhile for it to kick onto startup specially when it sits for awhile but after it starts and it runs it'll fire right back up if it's that same day it'll run good all day on and off no problems when you let it sit for a week or a couple weeks and then try to fire it that's when it seems like it gives you issues now the 12 valve Cummins I got a Thinkin sit for 6 months a little fire rate up no issues that's what I like about that 12 valve but the 73 is a good engine to I'm having a little check engine light pop on mine after I had the engine out a few months ago I just had the valve covers off I didn't see anything really major noticeable and I think I already did new valve cover gaskets but I have a 1997 so I know they sell the updated ones but I did not go with them I went with the original Ford motor crafts and one thing I like about the originals is that if it is a issue with the injectors you can pull each plug from each side of the head there is four injectors on each side of the motor and you can pull that injector plug harness and it will stop working two injectors and then if you pull the other one on the same side of the engine or the head it'll stop the other injectors and you'll see a difference now I'm not saying that I'm not an expert at the injectors but for my acknowledged that if the injectors ain't working whatever which one you pole on each side of the engine or cylinder head while it's running if there's no difference that's the injector or the wiring leading to that injector that has the issue no I pulled mine each individually while runs while the check engine light and you can see it makes a major difference and also pulling the valve covers and watching the oil spurt out of each injector while it's running that injector is working weather how good or how strong it is working if it looks like it's putting out the same oil flow in the rest seven of them left and right sides Banks and I'm injectors more likely are good and then if you got a small scan so you can do a cylinder contribution test and an injector test and if that comes back good and passes little buzz all your injectors then you should be good but my check engine lights on I'm going to do PSI test on the high pressure oil pump even though it has been replaced you also have a low oil pump the contributes to the high pressure oil pump but this truck has had a new oil pump back in 2018 with brand new oil pan rebuild oil cooler brand new high pressure oil pump all new glow plugs braided fuel lines with a pressure gauge to show you what the pressure is that you are getting good fuel so I'm thinking that it's either the crank sensor camshaft sensor or something in the O-rings of the injectors or something in the wire ring leading to the injectors and when I first started up once in awhile the check engine light will come on then it'll clear up then it'll stop and then come back on and still feel like it has no power and then if you shut it off and wait a minute less than a minute and let the glow plugs cycle where the light shuts off it'll fire rate up and run good it happened to me yesterday where the check engine light went off stayed off and then pop back on and couldn't really notice that much of a difference while it was on but a little bit so hopefully I get mine figured out you get yours figured out also
Thanks for watching Ace. Sounds like you've done a ton of stuff on your trucks. I hope you get the check engine thing figured out.
I can't even find a spark plugs that was hilarious 🤣
Haha glad someone thinks I'm funny. I still haven't found them... Thanks for watching!

Yes, it was smoking when it was running rough. Thanks for watching, and I hope it helps.
Any updates on the 7.3 powerstroke
She's still rolling down the road...
The Dorman gaskets incorperate this connection as one piece or eliminates this connection, but the rest of the gasket messes up
So it is no better? Thanks for watching!

$230 something is better than $1000 to a shop !!Good Vid 🖒🇺🇸
Yep. That's why I at least try and fix it myself first usually. I really appreciate you always watching Rick. Thanks again.
I have 95 F250 7.3 cuts out going down the hiway don't die all the way just cuts out between 30 and up 75 not all the time
Bummer. Thanks for watching man. Did you get it figured out? Was it the same issue?
Mine sound like yours except it goes back to normal idle… it’s inconsistent and the check engine light shuts off wtf??
It’s a 95
Could be a similar problem, just that the harness is making/losing contact at different times? Hard telling, and I'm no expert. I'd try and catch it when it's acting up and check the exhaust temps on each side. If you can figure out which side is causing the issue, it's not too hard to pull the valve cover and see what's going on. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
@@MontanaGarage right on thanks man
Have you got your 57 yet?
Not yet, details coming soon though so stay tuned!
Good thing you didn't have to do down pipes or H Pump
I'm going to pretend I know what that means... I agree. I am soo lucky it wasn't the H Pump. Haha I appreciate you watching and maybe I'll learn what that stuff is next time it breaks down.
Why don't you do a valve adjustment that that many miles on it
Probably would have been a good idea...
7.3 liter powerstroke is the BEST diesel engine every made. They were too good, that's why they quit making them 😂
