You know. I do believe a person can like both Abba and Cradle of Filth. Doesn't discredit that person's love to metal at all.

I can see why people say someone is a poser when someone says he likes Metallica and like Ice-t or something but it's just dumb. Just listen to the music you like. I listen to many artists sometimes I listen more rap and sometimes metal or blues it also depends on my mood. Why is it even a thing to call someone a poser for not liking only metal bands...

Yesterday I literally went from listening to Celtics Frost to immediately listening to the Mama Mia soundtrack so that counts as Abba😅 so yeah I also believe people can have music taste that extremely differ.

There's an idea! Turn other commercial/mainstream names into more "brutally pleasing" names! I bet a lot of great band names could come out of something like that, & if you've got a band there's the added bonus of familiarity in using such monikers, as subconsciously people might be more drawn to it without knowing exactly why! It's also a tactic used in branding/advertising!

I completely agree! When I went to my first Metal concert some years ago I was called a poser because I hadn't yet heard of many of the bands that a fellow concert goer was talking to me about. Instead of putting people down and calling them a poser you should embrace them into the community and educate them.

And they're wondering why nobody wants to really fully join-in! I mean, it's a brotherhood and lots of respect comes if you love Metal or Extreme music, but they literally cry over the smallest things: pAnTeRa, Deathcore not being really accepted besides it's own community, what counts vs what doesn't count as Metal, how good the vest looks (ok, don't get poorly made patches but still)!

Wanna know what a true Poser is?
It's a metal band that lies about where they're from
a frontman who tells local metal bands that they have a recording label of their own(
      ( when they're unsigned)
They're signing bands... (how can they?)
      They are the true posers

I agree, but I cannot stand EDM, rap, or pop, and it pains me most of the time to have to call those genres music when discussing music. I love pretty much everything else outside of that, of course quite a few metal sub-genres, but also jazz, baroque, blues, even a little country now and again is fine. As far as I'm concerned, if it's got a good message, and especially if it's made with real and natural instruments, I'm not too picky and won't bitch (too much).

I definitely see where you're coming from.
like when someone tells me how they're so into metal. yet, when I ask what bands they like, they always mention hard rock and grunge bands. Unless they're new to the genre,That's always mildly annoyed me.
but when they're someone who's the real deal but they like a few core bands on the side, I have no issues with that. it all comes down to if their heart is genuinely in it, and they're not just trying to impress people based on "durr. look how diverse my moozik tayse is. am I impressing anyone yet?"
and imo, and I know someone will take me out of context or send me loads of crap over this, but it's kind of the same way with the word "elitist"
I swear on it, everytime I see someone critique a band like babymetal or some core band, (legit criticisms, not the immature "dey ems pozurs" arguments) they always get lambasted by people screaming "elitist!/you don't like it therefore you're an elitist/hur hur typical elitist"
myself and friends have even been called elitists, just because we can tell some sub genres apart. or just because we like death metal/black metal. I wish I was joking. in some cases, these anti-elitists can come off worse than the elitists themselves.
now I got my little tangent out the way, good vid as always. :)

+C0ffeeChugger94 It's funny because I have had similar experiences. Why? Because I can tell the difference in subgenres. And I am not a subgenre basher either. Do I like power metal? Not really, but I will never bash the music, bands, or fans. It's still a legitimate branch of metal. People just get their feelings hurt when you say you don't like what they like.

    • @Eeiiaane
      @Eeiiaane 8 років тому +6

Good thing Iv'e never encountered both, I'm not an elitist but I can definitely tell, sub genres of metal too, I guess both sides really have flaws, some elitist are really just plain pain in the ass but also can be said on some anti-elitist, I myself listen to Babymetal, and all the other mainstream genres and sub-genres of metal and I can always see some critiques towards the bands that I listen too, but it's their opinion, and I truly respect that everyone has their own taste after all, I just find it more fun enjoyable, if your a metalhead who can listen to almost anything from genres to genres and into sub-genres, that's just the way I do, and the way I listen to music..

People throw out the elitist thing all the time. I listen mostly to black metal from Norway, Finland and Sweden. I get called an elitist and a hipster all the time, especially when I have an unpopular opinion on any other band. It pisses me off honestly, just because I favour black metal; I don't think it's better than any other type of metal, it's just what I prefer.

You have the most amazing personality, you really are gentle with what you say in a non push over way, and are very excepting, I hope some people in the metal community take something away from this, there are a lot of younger teens who are trying to understand the genre and need the older ones to guide them, not ridicule them for not knowing. Thanks so much for making this video. We want to keep metal alive, and we wont be around forever, we need to recruit the young ones as well to carry the torch.

I am a metalhead in heart, but i don't have long hair, i dress casually and also like music outside of the metal genre.
Music like Ska, reggea, punk, blues, Jazz, classical and Celtic folk.
And to top that, me and my girlfriend are taking salsa lessons, and next on our list are merengue and bachata.
      All three Latin dance styles.
And we're pretty good at it if i may say so.
What i'm trying to say is that at the end it's just music.
And it's not the way you look, that makes you love the music, it's the music itself that does that.
And music has no dress code, it's not forbidden or a sin to listen to a certain style but not act or dress like it.
and people tend to forget that.
It's healthier to live with an open mind.
I also used to kick against people who didn't like heavy metal.
I also used to have long hair and wear black clothes
But that was 10 years ago.
I have learned over the years that what i wear or the music that i listen doesn't identify me.
It's who i am and what i love to do with my life that identify me.
And if i want to go to a Blackmetal concert in casual clothing, i go to a blackmetal concert wearing casual clothing.
Because you know what, i know what i like, and i don't have to prove that to anyone else.

How do you know their not into metal? Because they play pop music? That's BS.
I don't know if she still is or not, but Demi Lovato was a metalhead early in her career. She mentioned on Leno that she liked Dimmu Borgir, Job For A Cowboy, Abigail Williams, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Devil Wears Prada, Underoath, Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster, Lamb Of God, and Dr. Acula.
She decided to become a Pop Artist more for business reasons than anything, because she realistically thought she'd have better chance of finding success on that path.

    • @Poser_Metal_Records

+Helloweeny Gamma-Maiden Honestly I don't concern myself with these kinds of people. Them faking (or actually being legit fans yet making pop music) doesn't affect me or the bands I listen to. I don't pay much attention to "artists" like those because those scenes are irrelevant to me. I'd rather just focus on metal and the other few other types of music that I like.

    • @Headsign

Why? Because you don't associate those people with metal. But maybe they really like these bands. Many people who don't seem metal have their favorites in Metal. What makes me cringe is H&M are selling RAMONES T-Shirts and all the dumb youngsters are running around, wearing the shirt from one of my favorite bands even though they certainly never heard, albeit would not at all like the music. Hell, they probably think RAMONES is some dumb label. Ugh!

Posers: Just because it's in Walmart doesn't mean you should buy it. Ac/Dc shirts, Nirvana shirts, Metallica shirts, those bands mean a lot to a lot of people, and just because you know "Back in Black," "Smells like Teen Spirit" or "Enter Sandman" DOES NOT mean that you know that band. I see so many rock, metal and grunge band shirts floating around and I ask people about them sometimes, and they just blank. "What's your favorite Metallica album?" "Oh.. uh... ya know... the one with 'Enter Sandman' on it..." Here's a rule of thumb: If you don't genuinely like the band, can't name at least 2 albums you actually like by the band, or only know their popular songs, it's probably not a good bet to wear that band's logo on your shirt.

    • @jordan220
      @jordan220 8 років тому +7

Oh, and DONT MAKE A BATTLE JACKET UNLESS YOU ACTUALLY LIKE METAL BANDS AND KNOW THEM WELL ENOUGH TO WEAR THEM ON A VEST. So many kids walk around with A7x, Sleeping with Sirens, other rock and pop band patches on their "battle vests". I'm sorry, but no, that's appropriating metal. It's part of metal culture to have a battle vest, don't shit on our sacred uniform with your rock and grunge. Sure, if you like a rock band, you can like them. But don't dedicate a battle vest to them unless you have 10-20 (preferrably MORE) metal bands that you actually LIKE (see above guidelines as suggestion) that you'd be able to sport every day and be able to get into a conversation about.

No, but they're not in the metal community, and they don't know anything about metal. If you see an Indian family wearing their traditional garb do you go out and buy one, and then stamp your country's flag on it? No. Metal is a musical culture, the same idealogy applies. Now I'm not saying you CANT, but metal fans will likely frown on you if you do.

A culture involves music. Metal could be considered a culture, the same way we consider 80's style and 70's style to be culture. Because it had an origin, a common style of dress, music and a lot of other aspects of culture. We consider "retro" to be a cultural milestone in our history, just like the rock and metal movements were and still are

Lmao I remember I used to be that person that only listed to the few songs on nevermind and some in utero, but now I know more than Id ever thought I would. For example, I like a few Guns N’ Roses songs (like the ones you mentioned) but I’m not such a hardcore fan (recommending some is the cool part)

It's ok as a beginner but not to only have patches of popular bands or T shirts: everyone can wear a Metallica, AC/DC, Slipknot shirt etc just because it's trendy and thinks that those bands are the best thing ever! I like when people wear bands that not everyone knows at first sight like idk, a Deathcore band (honestly, how many even would know of Suicide Silence or Lorna Shore and those are popular in Deathcore), stuff like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel (Death Metal) or even Punk Rock (Rancid, Bad Brains)...
Now I'm not trying to gatekeep, I absolutely hate but my point is, everyone will reconise Metallica, Iron Maiden, Slayer, AC/DC, Slipknot, Guns n Roses etc and when confronted you will see who is a fan and who got it just cuz it looked cool, that's the only form of gatekeeping I can accept, confronting others who have no idea what they have on a shirt or as a merch even if yea, some might say, it's his/her product and nobody has any right to question it

Back when I was around 14-15 years old, growing up within the metal community in Romania, the "big, true kvlt, REAL" metalheads were using "pokemon" as a term for poser, only they didn't use it for posers alone, but as you said, simply abusing the term to the point where you were a "pokemon" if you didn't like a band that the respective person liked... It was friggin' annoying and especially discouraging for young people in the scene, who were just getting into the music and all that. This elitism is what made me kinda distance myself from the Romanian metal community in the years before moving away, because it felt like everytime I went to a metal bar, there was a "who has a bigger dick" contest going on and it just became ridiculous. I have no idea if they still use that term anymore over there, since I haven't lived there for so long, but I hope the people matured a bit more... :/

But you'll also find Amon Amarth, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer and Iron Maiden to name a few (completely unrelated bands).... I would just like to live in a world where people can be themselves and be okay with that.

I had a life changing moment when I was in High school . I was wearing a brand new Pantera Reinventing the steel shirt about 4 months after the album came out and another metal guy at my school who I never really talked to was going around talking shit about me being a poser. when I confronted him about it he said it was because My shirt was "new" and it wasn't even WORN OUT and he had one from day one and it was already faded. after that I started not giving a shit about what people wore or relating what they listened to to what they wear, their life style etc.

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 8 років тому +7

See, if you were a true metalhead, you'd have repeatedly stepped on the shirt on your driveway and washed it so that you could have a shirt that looked like it was 10 years old just 4 months after release.
Jokes aside, when he told you his shirt was already faded you should have said "yeah but some of us own more than one piece of clothing".

I got called a poser because I suggested a band to a guy that was metalcore, and he called them emo. Then he called me a poser because I listen to slipknot, and he also says new bands suck, but then I said well how would you know if this one sucks if you don't try them. Later on I made fun of grindcore just like he made fun of some of the stuff I listen to, and he got mad. I dident even get mad when he was saying this shit to me, I just kept it civil, because it really dident bother me too much. But just a perfect example of an idiot who is closed minded who can dish shit out but can't take it.

    • @MrsMonsterVlogs
      @MrsMonsterVlogs 8 років тому +8

There is a little more to it, but I guess you'd only know if you were part of the subculture.
Alot of folk who identify as more "Trad" Goth can be pretty intolerant of other types of either Goth fashion or Goth music. For example Cyber Goth, Pastel/Kawaii Goth, Gothabilly/Hippy Goth/Steampunk etc.
There are a few folks, even within other "subcultures" of the subculture that believe that if you are a fan of anything else (i.e. heavy metal or symphonic metal or anything other than "traditional" Goth music) then you are not really Goth i.e a POSER.
It's total BS, but unfortunately quite rife in the culture. Boo

@@Poser_Metal_Records "Even though I'm ignorant on the subculture, it's my understanding that Goths listen to Gothic music. Am I correct or is there more to it than that?"
Oh boy, did you ever ask a complex question. LOL! A HUGE debate on "what is Goth" has gone on for years now (as in over 30 years). If you brought together a bunch of 80's Goths and asked them to define Goth it would dissolve into a huge b*tchfest and the question would never fully get answered.
In my opinion, there is more to it than that. For many, Goth is a lifestyle that involves art, literature, clothing, poetry, cinema, and an underlying aesthetic that colors our outlook on life, definition of beauty, and the world around us. Music is also included in that. However, what constitutes as "Goth music" is HIGHLY open to opinion as there isn't a universal and definitive list of approved Goth bands. Generally, you can tell which generation a Goth came up in by their favorite bands. For instance, if you meet a Goth that likes lots of aggrotech, industrial, hellelektro, synthpop, and ebm they most likely were teenagers circa 2000 - 2005 when that style of music was pretty popular in the Goth scene. Today's Goth teens and 20-somethings are really into the "dark synth hipster" type of Goth bands like Boy Harsher, She Past Away, and Twin Tribes.

I might consider myself a poser because I never encased myself in the metal genres. I do have some "blasphemy" tastes too like "goth" rock, punk, cheap-2000s punk, opera, pop and hip hop. But I must say I dislike even more people that you must certainly must know that speak about metal only and saying how much are they into metal and all that crap. They might say that they love Iron Maiden for example and they only know Powerslave. Or they say they are much into Doom Metal and only know Paradise Lost (and don't even know their style has changed a lot till this day).
OH! But if they hear you ONE FUCKING TIME listening to something very "wrong" like say K-Pop, they start to criticize you for liking it. I normally tend to say something like "Fuck you, you thought Risk was the best Megadeth album!" or something along those lines.

I will say, I like most types of metal, not all though. I did get chewed out by a guy I met years back who was your typical hardcore elitist. I mentioned, I liked Sevendust, and just tore into me about how they weren' t metal, and how shit they were and that nu-metal was killing real metal, and just this torrent of nastiness. I don't real think of Sevendust as metal, they are hard rock, but they are genuine rockers and got a lot soul, blood, sweat, and tears in their music. My point is, that elitist are worse than posers. Posers just want to seem special and want attention. I don't hate them, I try to educate them and maybe bring some real metal, not what they played on guitar hero, into their life. The funniest thing I think is when someone changes their opinion on a band, just cause the race of the lead singer. A friend of mine used to hate this one band, the name escapes me, until we were watching some videos online and saw the lead singer was black. He switched his tune pretty quick after that. Did same thing with Sevendust and killswitch Engage. Of course after Howard left KE he stopped listening. I think you can consider that a type of poser, am I wrong?

I never said which genre(s) I like more, because of the genres I listen to, I like them all about equally. I still listen to plenty of metal, but I fluctuate between different stuff depending on my mood.

I'm gonna keep on posing and discovering metal. Not afraid to admit if I'm not in the mood for metal I'll put on something lighter like Tokyo or some melodic rock etc. Actually I find listening to lighter stuff then going back to the metal makes metal even easier to appreciate. Good video. Thanks.

The guitar hero thing is so true. I've lived my whole life a metal head. And I was an outcast at school because no one else liked it. Then guitar hero came out and all of a sudden I walk around school and every one has GNR and Metallica shirts on. And when I asked a kid what his favorite GNR songs where he said sweet child oh mine and welcome to the jungle. And he couldn't name any others. And those are both on guitar hero. It did piss me off because my whole life I grew up listening to them. If I said I liked rock at school the kids would say that it was a trash music genre. So to see people turn like that did make me mad. But when it comes to people fighting in our own rock community it's just bad. We are a family and if one guy like Metallica better than slayer who cares, it doesn't mean he hates slayer, he just like Metallica more.
I talk too much. Great video and keep on rocking \m/

Hey Mr. Werewolf I'm 52 years old and probably old enough to be your dad. I as there at the birth of the underground thrash/death metal movement of the early 80's. I'm from the bay area thrash scene. The term poser started out in the punk rock scene of the late 70's. The poser term was taken up by die hard underground pure metal elitists against the mainstream commercial bands. Also the term "Death To False Metal". In the mid 80's the word poser was geared at very mainstream commercial bands like Dokken,Def Lepard and Poison from fans of darker heavier stuff like Destruction,Kreator,Exodus etc. Mainstream Metal fans into this commercial stuff had never heard about the thrash underground and had no idea they were viewed as posers from elitists like myself. It was much simpler back then. Today with so many Metal sub genres it's very complicated to call anyone a poser now. You are totally correct today that term is pretty weak and meaningless. Also in retrospect it was pretty stupid to begin with.

I wouldn't call myself an extreme metalhead, but metal is the music I listen to like 99,243% of the time.
I don't have any merch, because I am currently going through a growth spurt and I will get some shirts when I am full-size and in shape (hopefully).
I only really started this year by listening to Slipknot at first, but now I have songs from Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, Korn, Cannibal Corpse, Skinless, Rammstein and Mudvayne.
I got almost only overrated songs for a few of them, but I am planning on looking further.
I am currently giving Slayer a try and will more than likely add some songs to my playlist.
I am also going to see Rammstein next summer, hope all goes well.

  • @Axemang

4:06 - 4:25 . . . NAILED IT. The classic "poser" meaning. If you're just getting into something, it's totally fine to be humble and admit that you're new to it. If you act like you're the shit or you've been a part of something for a long time, you're kidding yourself, and insulting those who have dedicated their time to something. The very worst is when that person abandons the thing they were making themselves out to be, because then it just proves that they didn't care for it at all. That, in my opinion, is an absolutely appropriate usage of "poser."

I sorta understand as someone who liked Slayer and then had the Guitar Hero Fade come through and get people to only like a Raining Blood and get pissed off at those people.. But there are a lot of people who's parents were sheltering them from metal, and couldn't feel the need to express themselves and taste of music until the game came out, and let alone got a lot of people not only interested but appreciating how tough metal can be to play. As a guitarist, Guitar Hero was definitely not only a stepping stone to work my left hand and making use of my pinkey, but a good reiteration of music that may had been lost from past decades that wouldn't be played on your normal classic hits station. Just figure I'd bring that point up..Totally agree with the concepts of the video though.

As a big fan of 'Goth' metal I recommend Sirenia. (Pronounced Sigh-rer-nia) Listen to 'Dim Days of Dolor, this is a very catchy song. Their sound has changed over the years. Currently they are more operatic sounding. When they first started out their previous singer was more rock sounding. Search for 'Sail away' to find recommendations for their older material.,

Totally agree with this video, and you found the right words for calling someone a poseer: "To discredit him or her". But I think even to people who don't listen metal, metalheads should be more open with them instead of calling them poseers, no one ever liked metal since they were born, someone or something got us into metal. What you call a posseer today, might start liking some metal bands and grow tih the same ideology tomorrow

I have been called a poser on more than one occasion for also liking music that isnt metal (bands like New Years Day, etc.) as well as metal bands. It really sucks cuz its like some people are like "fuck you, you cant be part of this" when despite enjoying different genres of music aside from metal, you are just as valid with the metal community. My favourite genre is metal (on a whole, im jot gonma go into subgenres) , ive loved it for years and it sucks to be called a poser.

I use "poser" when referring to someone who doesn't put their heart into it, taking your Butcher Babies example. By the definition that it's someone who is passing for something they're not, i think it's still valid... as to being meaningful or not, that depends on the one hearing it :) but yes, don't take it too personally.
Cheers, man, thanks for the cool videos!

Agreed. Most often in situations when that one metalhead randomly comes up to me, because am wearing a metal band t shirt, piercings and black attire, tries to talk about the band and they themselves sometimes be wearing clothes you can find on a store ad for menswear, like target or something. At first, I thought poser, but then again realized of course not, because most had a great deal of knowing much about the music or show of different metal bands, depending on my shirt really XD.

  • @DokkenSabbath
    @DokkenSabbath 7 років тому +19

A poser to me is someone who wears a t-shirt or other clothing of a band, but aren't a fan or knows nothing about the band or couldn't name you one song. If you don't know or like the band, than don't wear the fucking shirt or clothing! We should not be calling each other posers in the Metal community. We should be attacking trendy, crappy celebrities wearing Metal shirts and other clothing. They are the true posers!

I wasnt crazy into metal before I played guitar hero. But playing guitar hero introduced me to slipknot, maiden, metallica, anthrax, megadeth, testament. I eventually bought all their cd's it got me passionate about music and I became a real big fan of metal. punk. grunge. industrial. To me poser isnt really at all a thing. We all start not knowing about something and we eventually build our knowledge of it and our passions for the music grow. Im called a poser in metal scenes and Im called fake in the punk scene. But to me the music is real and my love for it is.

I agree! To be opened minded does not mean to be a poser even musicians listen to many kinds of genders and what is the matter with that, as long as you enjoy and understand what metal is,no problem. If you like this or the other thing you know it is just music. But if someone just puts on a band shirt just because he wants to show he is a metal head but he doesn't like the music that is wrong.

If doesn't matter what genre of metal you listen to, if you listen to metal and have passion for the music you like then you are not a 'poser'. Personally, I've listened to metal for 15 years and like a variety of genres. Most of the stuff I listen to is power/melodic sounding, but I also like some doom and death metal too. Despite being heavily into metal I still listen to pop/dance music such as Adam Lambert, Scooter, Westlife and Daft Punk. Westlife are badass!
