Been using this watch over the past 3 months. I am a professional Mariner and I bought the JDM model in Japan. Can’t begin to describe the beauty of the dial. My watch gains about 6 seconds daily, and this has been more or less steady when I was using it every day on the ship, and now since the past 3 weeks when I am home.
HOLY NINE COWS!! i just got this watch today. I can't even put in proper words how beautiful this dial is... I don't know what to say... the way the dial reflects and changes tones and has an almost iridescent or pearlescent looks in some lighting situations. I'm having trouble explaining it, because it has to be seen to be appreciated. I was also so pleased to see the Manta Rays are subtle enough to blend in and not be noticed that easily at quick glance... but visible enough even to be seen when you stare at low light levels. Also, the writting on the dial looks almost applied (or embossed) instead of printed. Seiko has really outdone themselves on this dial!
I’m speechless as well. It’s so hard to explain. You just see it in person to admire that dial. It’s my Christmas present and I keep opening box to admire it lol I can’t put it down. Hopefully the wife didn’t catch me 😂 😆
I don't think those upgrades grant the word king...as the first king turtles had waffle dials. King should have the waffle dial! this watch is a save the ocean...but upgraded. the manta rays are its key definition. but you may call it whatever you want of course.
@@EscapementWatchI think I'd agree with the OP. This indeed IS a King Samurai, more so because it is not only a special edition with all specifications of the King and more but most of all coz of the attention to detail which is next level; worthy of the KING moniker for sure.

I just impulse-bought a watch..been thinking about a rugged, 20 bar, sports watch. For our grandson, he did ok in school, soccer, good kid too. Quartz, auto ok..but wasnt sure what to get..was always leaning seiko or citizen. Leaning towards a beauty or a cool navy seal watch. Hit three retail stores today..i wasnt fooling around..walked out the first quickly, didnt see what i liked. 2nd store, a nationally known mall jewelery store, had two watches il liked price too high. 3rd store, big selection, 100s of watches on display. SPOTTED THIS BLUE MANTA RIGHT AWAY!! The clerk gave me a discount. BAM! Done! It was a no - brainer. Brought it home, grandson was in our pool i said here take this, its yours. It was too big..but he liked it. GOOD! i took the tags off and told him dip it in the pool, thats what its for..a watch that can take an accidental plunge. He dont care about the erratic movement or grainy crown action.. but the crown sealed up against the water allright. He left 2 hours later..still no fog inside the crystal. Found out i had a sapphire crystal as soon as he lifted it out of the water. Beads on the crystal..Nice! The bracelet is easy to adjust..push pins with the direction arrows are nice. Took out two links for him, resized the clasp adjustor, and he was styling. I was more excited to give him this beauty..he doesnt have a clue what a neat watch he just got

I figured the 6r35 would have major isochronism problems. All they do is make the winding spring slimmer and jam more of it into the winding barrel which equals a longer, but more uneven unwind. ETA powermatic is similar. I prefer 40/45 hour power reserve myself.

I have both the manta ray and the white waffle. They are both King Samurai. All these which came in sapphire glass and ceramic bezel, like the turtle, are categorised as king. They have the 4r35 Movement, not, 6r35. Both my king Samurai and king turtle gives me about average + 7 spd. I collect them for fun, so it's ok. Anyway, it can be easily regulated, so, not a problem. All mine don't have any problem with the crown, and, do aligned properly. Anyway, it can be easily fixed. No sweat. I also have small wrist, so l wear them with 22/18 straps, rubber or leather. For the rubber strap, l use the Hirsh Urban natural rubber. For the leather, l use either the fine bull leather by Official Time, or, the tougher shell cordovan by Rios. It depends on how l want to enjoy and present them. I bought the 33k1 for $400 and 37k1 for $370 (37% discount). How much is the zelos? I have a few 6r35. As it has a longer power reserve, l wind them longer. If l wind them before l put them to rest for the night, l get less than 5 spd. Anyhow, it can be easily regulated, so no sweat again. For precision and fine finishing, l wear my GS. I enjoy all my watches with straps, so again, no complaints on the bracelet. I don't get serious with my watches. I prefer to have fun. After all, it's a hobby.

I used to work on a cargo ship... One of the things that attracted me to this model is how well Seiko captured the nature of a calm sea in the sunshine! Got mine for $575.00 CDN. Wondering how that compares to other people's experience?
Just paid 281 usd at macys an american store..big sale. Doesnt matter..it was for the grandson.. i said..i 'll take it! The watch just outshined 150 others in the display case. Its gone now..i gifted it out, and the grandson will learn how to take care of it, hopefully. I said one thing..you have a special watch here..just be careful please
@@pootthatbak2578 - A thoughtful gift! FWIW the Samurai is built like a tank. I think you would actually have to attack it with tool to do any damage. He'll have that watch for decades to come. I have one of my grandads watches too, an old Rolex from WWII. He took it to Europe and returned home safely with it. One of my most treasured objects, and I feel the honor every time I wear it.
Paid $300 plus Fl tax yesterday. There is a shop in Jax that sells Seiko's for 50% off in late December before he has to pay inventory tax. At $300 it's a bargain, as in the EU these are around 500 Euro.

Really enjoying all your reviews and now subscribed 👍 I'm a little disappointed that my Manta is running slow at -8 seconds/day... almost all Seikos you've reviewed are running nice at a few seconds fast... at least my bezel is perfectly aligned 😁
welcome aboard. Yes seikos are pretty accurate surprisingly and can be regulated easy! check out my vid on regulation. but if your not steady or experienced do not try.
Compared to standard samurai. They've made the crown smaller and changed the case & crown gaurds to accommodate. Easy to see if you do a direct visual comparison. Clean the threads and it'll probably be smooth, I did it with mine, added a tiny bit of lubricant and wow, what a diff.
I’ve had three king samurai white dials and have had to send them all back. The crown would not engage into winding position after being pulled out to the last position. Check my video to see what I mean, it just springs in about out.
Hi .. thanks for honest n great review .. I just got the global version one & it well aligned .. I mean the bezel, chapter ring & 12 o'clock dial .. so, come to physical store are highly recommended for whom who has the eye of Rolex ..

Thanks for the vid, was about to pull the trigger on a pre-owned that I found. There was photo of the bracelet clasp, thankfully this vid shows the whole clasp quite well. Horrible at best, why pressed on such a watch.....but then again, it's Seiko....
I like the bezel on the Turtle better. The dots on the Turtle bezel are less noticeable so the bezel looks more dark. The Samurai bezel has white lines at every minute mark. Too much.
Seiko Prospex Turtle Manta Ray Save The Ocean Special Edition is the one I have. I like the wind knob on the side better, my hand likes it better, more kind!
When I wake up in the morning I go into the two cases I have and I wind every one of them that can be hand wound 25 wines then I take two per hand of the watches that are solely automatic and I spin and shake them gently for about 60 seconds and then all of my watches are charged except for the kinetic seikos that I have and I try to keep them charged at about a month so I wear them for three or four days at a time they charge up and then I put them back that way I'm rotating a watch almost every day outside of the kinetic stuff
I have six 6R35 movements (5 Sumos and a SPB187) and have not noticed the “turbo” speed fully wound or almost unwound. They all run at about 2 to 8 seconds a day. Maybe I got lucky and got some good ones. Beautiful dial though. I have the King Turtle version.
Thanks for sharing. Yeah I had a string of 6r35s that we're doing that but a couple recent ones we're not. So maybe I just had some bad ones in the past.
Thanks for video! I have a Citizen diver BN0191-80L, but want an automatic diver. And I find the Seiko SRPE33K1 to be an awesome watch, much nicer look than my Citizen. They are very much the same size, as well bezel size and lug to lug distance. But even the Citizen which is an Eco drive, is substantial on the wrist. I really feel I carry the watch on the wrist. It weighs ~ 158g according to my kitchen scale. But that is with a few links removed to fit my 6,7 inch wrist. I think 177g was reported unadjusted. This Seiko is even heavier, but 205g is with no link removed so it will be a bit lighter with the bracelet adjusted to my wrist. I guess it will be approximately 185g or so. Still a substantial watch on the wrist. Will I perceive it too heavy? I don't know. But it really looks awesome!
Exactly the same problem with my new seiko sumo 3rd gen.. I was going to send it back under warranty as my 6r-35 is gaining 50 plus seconds a day and in 3 days the gains are too big NOT to correct the time and wind it back , it’s driving me mad.. a £740 watch!... I used to complain about my Rolex sub gaining 30 seconds in a week... I won’t anymore!...

Yeah the stock photos are terrible in comparison to the actual dial. I got the turtle manta ray king turtle and it’s hard not to stare into it for hours.
I picked up an omega seamaster 300 white dial a month back. If I had seen the white waffle before may be I would not have gone for omega. Not that seiko is superior but purely from price point...😂😂. No doubt omega seamaster is an awesome watch
just noticed it, but why is it that the 1 - 10 on the bezel have longer miniute mark? Finally picked it after watching this video at least 4 times now! Dial is gorgeous, but that grainy crown winding is horredous along with the bezel turn sound a tad on the cheapo side, compare to my save the ocean king turtle for example.
yeah that crown issue is annoying on some models. Its debris from machining processes. Only way to fix is take of the back of the watch. release crown. get rodico clean the inside of the crown threads and outside crown tube fully. Then it is smooth.
Like this watch but don't like the size, weight, bezel action, clasp, cyclops, alignment or the case, so i bought a titanium homage from heimdallr and its awesome and solves all these problems for me.
I had a mantra turtle Briefly before I returned it for a refund. Yes the chapter ring doesn't line up. The Cyclops don't one up the finishing is rough and it's top heavy even on a bracelet. But I knew all that. I liked the way the dial looked right? No. It's awful in real life. There's too much black in the background so that the rays is only visible at very very specific angle and super bright sunlight that's not reflecting on the non ar treated glass.........It's a mess. Horrible returned. This samurai looks slightly more refined. But only by a little you really get what you pay for Seiko now. There's no bargains with nicer than expected case or movement no more
That sucks that you didn't enjoy the dial. But true on you get what you pay for with seiko. I've noticed with seiko pricing especially high end they really know how to price. Their finishing and quality changes exactly with price almost like a math formula I have been noticing.
Shame to see the issues with the crown, I also have issues with the king samurai. There is no pop when unwinding the crown. And after pulling out the crown to the third position and then pushing back in I can’t get into winding position again. Any thoughts? Is this one the same? Great video though 🙏
This is my only issue with the seiko mechanical watches they have horrible accuracy which is why I am hesitant to get one. But, I love that dial and it has a ceramic bezel,but the accuracy is pathetic!

It actually IS a King Samurai. Any samurai or turtle that upgrades to a sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel gets the KING distinction.

And that’s saying something! For me it’s this dial and the cocktail times. Seiko really does dials like no other.
I'm always impressed how Seiko manages to make such large dialled watches yet still retain reasonable (sub 49mm) lug-to-lug measurements

Yes, the manta ray is awesome. Better when you see in person. The white waffle is unique. This is the only white dial diver in my collection.

I wonder why for the cheaper models like this they use a ceramic bezel, but for the new Marinemaster the bezel is stainless steel…
Id most likely get this as love the way it looks, but I would ditch the bracelet and go w a black sailcloth strap.

J usually means made in japan. I would pick which ever is cheaper really.

I have a Citizen diver BN0191-80L, but want an automatic diver. And I find the Seiko SRPE33K1 to be an awesome watch, much nicer look than my Citizen.
They are very much the same size, as well bezel size and lug to lug distance.
But even the Citizen which is an Eco drive, is substantial on the wrist. I really feel I carry the watch on the wrist. It weighs ~ 158g according to my kitchen scale. But that is with a few links removed to fit my 6,7 inch wrist. I think 177g was reported unadjusted.
This Seiko is even heavier, but 205g is with no link removed so it will be a bit lighter with the bracelet adjusted to my wrist. I guess it will be approximately 185g or so. Still a substantial watch on the wrist. Will I perceive it too heavy?

Exactly the same problem with my new seiko sumo 3rd gen.. I was going to send it back under warranty as my 6r-35 is gaining 50 plus seconds a day and in 3 days the gains are too big NOT to correct the time and wind it back , it’s driving me mad.. a £740 watch!... I used to complain about my Rolex sub gaining 30 seconds in a week... I won’t anymore!...
Yeah not liking the 6R35 so far. 6r15 far superior with my experience. and 4r35 too!

Quite the snowstorm on the grapher. It should settle in after a month. I've also heard a couple other reviewers having that same gritty crown issue.

The samurai case is too chunky for this type timegrapher. I've got the same issue with mine. It's better with the caseback removed.
Yeah the stock photos are terrible in comparison to the actual dial. I got the turtle manta ray king turtle and it’s hard not to stare into it for hours.
I am torn between the white waffle or the manta ray, love them both but I can't decide.

I picked up an omega seamaster 300 white dial a month back. If I had seen the white waffle before may be I would not have gone for omega. Not that seiko is superior but purely from price point...😂😂. No doubt omega seamaster is an awesome watch
just noticed it, but why is it that the 1 - 10 on the bezel have longer miniute mark? Finally picked it after watching this video at least 4 times now! Dial is gorgeous, but that grainy crown winding is horredous along with the bezel turn sound a tad on the cheapo side, compare to my save the ocean king turtle for example.
yeah that crown issue is annoying on some models. Its debris from machining processes. Only way to fix is take of the back of the watch. release crown. get rodico clean the inside of the crown threads and outside crown tube fully. Then it is smooth.

Like this watch but don't like the size, weight, bezel action, clasp, cyclops, alignment or the case, so i bought a titanium homage from heimdallr and its awesome and solves all these problems for me.
No watch channel ever says how many twist you should give the crown to get a full wind

I had a mantra turtle Briefly before I returned it for a refund. Yes the chapter ring doesn't line up. The Cyclops don't one up the finishing is rough and it's top heavy even on a bracelet. But I knew all that. I liked the way the dial looked right? No. It's awful in real life. There's too much black in the background so that the rays is only visible at very very specific angle and super bright sunlight that's not reflecting on the non ar treated glass.........It's a mess. Horrible returned. This samurai looks slightly more refined. But only by a little you really get what you pay for Seiko now. There's no bargains with nicer than expected case or movement no more
That sucks that you didn't enjoy the dial. But true on you get what you pay for with seiko. I've noticed with seiko pricing especially high end they really know how to price. Their finishing and quality changes exactly with price almost like a math formula I have been noticing.
Shame to see the issues with the crown, I also have issues with the king samurai. There is no pop when unwinding the crown. And after pulling out the crown to the third position and then pushing back in I can’t get into winding position again. Any thoughts? Is this one the same? Great video though 🙏
Crown spring issue. try giggling it up, down. try to un-jam it. lightly tho.

This is my only issue with the seiko mechanical watches they have horrible accuracy which is why I am hesitant to get one. But, I love that dial and it has a ceramic bezel,but the accuracy is pathetic!
