Many of Seiko’s entry-level divers, such as the SKX, Sumo, Turtle, and King Turtle collections, are enthusiast favorites and have a similar overall feel present in their design. In this video, I’ll take a closer look at the SRPD09, an IP-coated version of Seiko’s sometimes-overlooked Samurai with a Save the Ocean blue gradient dial. I’ve been wearing this watch a lot lately, and I think it’s easily one of the best Seiko diver dials for the price.

The misaligned chapter rings have been going on for so long with Seiko that I'm beginning to wonder if they're actually trolling us at this point.

    • @LanguagesWithAndrew
      @LanguagesWithAndrew 3 роки тому +16

The value-for-money ratio of Seiko mechanical watches is actually not very good right now, it's just that it *used* to be really good and this was the case for a long time (decades I believe) and so, consequently, they really built up a reputation for being great value-for-money and because that's been repeated so many times people still think that they are. They've downgraded the movements and upgraded the prices (you used to get the 6R15 for ~$300 and up, now you have to pay at least ~$700-800), the chapter rings are consistently misaligned, and the bezels are very frequently misaligned on their dive watches. Absolutely shameful.
If you want good value-for-money under $1000, and especially if you want Japanese, check out Orient and Citizen. I'll also point out that you can get a Ball watch in excellent-used to new (old stock) condition for under $1000 if you shop around, and that is a *hell* of a good value right there.

@@LanguagesWithAndrew hum not sure your argument holds water most if not all there divers sell out and are only available on the gray market . Value for money is always gonna be subjective . Seikos watches have never been more popular including there Grand Seiko watches I have 2 of them plus a bunch of Seiko divers . There's plenty of nayayers that show up on every Seiko UA-cam post complaining about this are that makes you wonder why they keep showing up .... To troll maybe just saying. I agree. Glad my Seikos are older.
I won't buy another, even a GS. 10 year parts availability policy on GS??? GTFOOH
Inferior bracelets and fit, chunky cases, not my bag. And my wrist is 8.75" and could handle their offerings. Best thing about them? I never had to add a link out of the box.
For a bargain brand for specs, I have really enjoyed my Tissots over the last few years.

@@phillippugh2161 you missed his point. Seiko used to be good value. They built up a good reputation over the years and are indeed very popular. Unfortunately, they are raising their prices and dropping their specs because they're riding out this wave of popularity

I bought one of these last year, it was my first mechanical watch. The samurai fits on my 6" wrist, it's got crazy small lug to lug measurements. The rubber strap is crazy long though, so I bought a Ritche strap and threw it on that.

Thank you for bringing my watch of choice to light. I absolutely love the SRPD09. As a new watch enthusiast a couple of years ago I wanted something different from the norm and the most popular watches. It was always 007, 009, classic turtle, classic samurai etc etc. They all look great but I wanted something that stood out. The STO line gave me what I wanted and it's perfect. The dark blue strap and dial looks amazing on the ionized black coating. It's a great blend of the rugged reliable samurai shape with a modern masculine color scheme.

I bought this model in early 2020 with the intention of using it for scuba diving while on vacation. That... obviously hasn't happened yet, but I'm looking forward to it someday. In the meantime, I'll throw in my two cents in regards to its overall quality:
    - the dial is unbelievable. UA-cam can't do it justice; it's beautiful indoors and becomes something entirely different in sunlight. You have to see it in person to really get the full effect.
    - Mine runs about ten seconds +/- per day. For a watch this price (call it "the high end of entry level,") that's a great rate.
    - I guess I got lucky because my chapter ring is dead on, at least to the naked eye. The bezel is off by a hair, but that aforementioned tiny bit of play makes it easy to line up properly.
To quote Ferris Bueller, "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

Greetings from Egypt. I am lost deciding which Seiko (I have a Citizen and I prefer Japanese watches) to own as my first then was thinking, why not choose a watch that represents the country of origin in most aspects ?, so the "save the ocean" would be a good choice since Japan is an Island in the middle of the ocean, a Samurai edition would be a plus as it represents it's past (a history that molded their present as a country) and something that shows great honour and pride. So I think I made my choice now owning a watch that shows/represents it's country of origin in many aspects. A Samurai, save the ocean watch 😊

Was very close to buying one of these exact models for myself for Xmas, but got a 6r35 Sumo for the same price. Love it 😁
Would like to see you review the new Alpinist as I'm thinking of trading my 017 for the new prospex as I prefer the slightly bigger case size.
    Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

Bought this in 2019 when it came out, first mechanical watch I’d owned. It was a great watch, I let it go a couple of months ago. Regretted it since.

It's surely a big watch with 44mm diameter. but when i put it around y small 6 1/2 inch wrist, i was surprised how comfortable i felt with the strap - added to my collection now..

A review of any piece from the Fireman collection by Ball would be nice to see. There's a real scarcity of content on YT for this brand, which is a shame

Great content Teddy as usual, was wondering if you could do a review on the Bell and Ross BR05 (if not done already). Would like to see and hear your thoughts. Thinking of purchasing one down the track or the Rado Captain Cook Bronze, maybe both. Cheers

My opinion about this and other Seiko Samurais, Seiko should make them the step up from the Turtle. The Samurai should have at least a different movement, higher VPH at 28,000, have a Day-Date instead of Date-Just, and sapphire crystal.
