  • You will notice signs of kingpin and bushing failure from incorrect vehicle alignment, premature and uneven front tire wear and rough handling. It can result in a shaking cab or steering wheel. Because of the potential for further damage and driver safety risks, properly diagnosing and repairing worn kingpins and bushings needs to be a priority.
    This how-to video was produced with a 1963 Ford F100. While there are differences between straight-axle trucks, this should help you give a basic understanding of the process and tools you may need.

    That is a neat truck, and really clean. I came here because I am about to put a king pin and bushing set in a 1990 f-superduty. Looks similar Im hoping maybe just the kingpins are worn and not the bushings cause that looks like a whole different project

    😁😁😁🤗🤝 I did like you said on my 1979 Ford F100 4.9liter 2wd.(no power steering. But I put the crow bar under the tire 🌚, the 🤴king pins didn't wobble↔️ like yours did. But did go up and down ⬆️⬇️ when moving the bar, (there not tight like new)? Could bad king pins cause your alignment to knock off,?🤔 sometimes I am knowticing pulling to the ⬅️left when I take my hands off the steering, sometimes. Having to right➡️ steering with a little more effort at times 😐! Thank you for your channel ! Your the man at what you do!

    Dude this is cool. I just bought a 63 last Friday. I have some challenging days ahead as I'm starting with front to back new drums, shoes, cylinders, bearings. 2nd This exact do it yourself video is my next task, this will help. I noticed on mark 0:47 that horseshoe arm that comes out and connects to a steering link is shot. Seems like a good time to fix while doing the breaks. I will subscribe and follow along!

    Late to the game but I just got my first old truck, a '59 F100. Can this be done with the axle on the truck or do you have to remove the whole axle? It seems that unless you were doing spring or steering work it wouldnt be necessary to remove the whole thing (unless you need to put it in a press, I guess).

    When you do king pins you need to do the bushings

      8:52 he said that the bushings are new. Please get your facts straight before you post. 🤐

    • @mechantics
      @mechantics 3 роки тому +1

      @@mattshansen9814 no, he said the BEARINGS were new, the typical kingpin set includes brass bushings that go into the upper and lower spindle pivot points and are line reamed AT THE SAME TIME, in other words, using the same size reamer on the upper and then lower pivot point of the spindle would produce the same diameter bore, but out of line with one another. It's important to use a reamer that enables you to either ream both points at the same time

    I'm currently trying to replace my kingpins myself on my 1964 f100. However the sleeve that holds the kingpin in place (the one you used the brass hammer on) are not coming loose. Any tips? Great Video.

    I have a 50-60’s chevy axle is there a cap on top of the king pin? I have tried to push the pin down/out & what I am hitting down on seems to be a cap.. would appreciate any assistance.. thanks!

    • @mechantics
      @mechantics 3 роки тому +1

      I have a $67 Dodge and, just like you, have pins that are capped, did your set of replacements come with what looks like to freeze plugs? The proper term is to swedge them upon installation which in essence reverses them creating the seal. I'm coming to find out that it almost seems like, given the near obsolescence of the kingpin and passenger vehicles, tending to them is a good opportunity to keep alive the Machinists methods of the past century. Walk into a jiffy lube and say you need your kingpin thrust bearings reamed and make a video of their faces go town to town to all the corporate places, now that would be a UA-cam winner for the couple hundred people who would get the joke to begin with I guess

  • @FastFXS

    It’s not nessary to remove axle to do this, and you should ALWAYS replace the bushings in the spindles and ream them to size.
