  • N GAUGE MODEL RAILWAY - MAKING REALISTIC MODEL TUNNELS
    I go through step by step how to make and weather tunnels and tunnel portals.
    In this video I:
    - Explain how I make the templates for the tunnel apertures.
    - Show the testing of the templates on the layout.
    - Demonstrate the process of applying N gauge brick paper (no I’m not cutting out every brick, lol).
    - Demonstrate the process of create the internal walls.
    - Demonstrate how to create a compound curved ceding for the tunnel.
    - Finally how to weather the whole thing, before fitting.

    This is the video I've been looking for this morning - tunnels and walling. As you know from my videos I have a lot of walling and tunnel mouths and they were done last year as the first part of modelling my layout (you did me a shout and mentioned them). Well the thing is John, this is my first layout and the more I do, the better my modelling skills are getting as so my next big thing is going back to the walling and tunnel mouths and this video was just what I was looking for its perfect! I think they came out absolutely brilliant! The thing I love about your videos is that you show it in such simple steps and the final result looks absolutely amazing. Well done John, I have definitely taken a lot away from video. Thanks again, Lee

      Ahhhh thanks that’s really kind. This video as you know is N gauge, and although the idea is the same, it’s done differently to OO. I a similar thing on the OO gauge layout, using a metcalfe viaduct as a basis. VIDEO BELOW. (I made a different channel for the OO gauge layout, it’s only 2months old).

      I do suggest looking at real walling and tunnels in the type of area you are modelling. Eg you mentioned graffiti in London on the girder bridges, might be worth having a wander out and about or google particular settings.
      This may be of some help too:

    • @leewhall2504
      @leewhall2504 4 роки тому +1

      It definitely is help to me John. The area that I'm modelling does actually have extremely similar tunnels and brickwork that you were modelling because it involves lors of london Underground systems and the the bridge work and tunnel mouthe (the majority) really are old. The bridges are equally rife too, so I want a mix. This has been really helpful John and thanks as always 👍🏻

    Very impressed with the tunnel build. The use of OO gauge texture paper for the brick arch was inspired and gave a really good result. Interested to see you weathering the model afterwards. The result if very effective. That is something so far I simply can't bring myself to do having laboured over building them - although a start has been made with an item at High Elven. It is a good job my layout is a fictitious place where everything is kept very clean. Stephen

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 роки тому

      Hi Stephen thank you. I know what you mean when a model takes time. I feel the secret is a good varnish coat, protects the model but allows the weathering to be toned back if desired. If you go straight on the the bare card it’s permanently stained

    Hi John , Hope your keeping well ? Really enjoying this Video tonight , Wow the abosulote Level of detailing is just Mind blowing , I will tell you i will never look at Tunnels again Quite in the same way again , I use OO brick , Reason why i also think the n Gauge brick does indead look Too small even for N gauge , Never thought about modelling inside as when we were building Westcombe , The original intension was to put Catenary under the tunnel and might even catch the Pantographs on the Tunnel mouths . John have you thought , You wont see the detailing inside ( Ha Ha )

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Andrew, so glad you like it. Yes very much did think abt the inside, prepping if I was able to get a train cam, and wouldn’t want the inside of the tunnel to look bad. Yes the clip would go black but the amount of wall I’ve made would be kind of in the light for some anyway with train lights on too

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  4 роки тому

      Hi Mick, blimey how long did that take? Several days I would imagine?
      Building platforms in N gauge sadly not. None scheduled until I build Dinting station, not sure when though.
      However, I do for the OO gauge layout so it’s just scaling down the idea. (Video link below), The only difference would be the edging would be one continuous strip glued on checking the position against your carriages to avoid fouling. Then varnish to seal the surface before using filler.
      Alternatively... you could start by making the top, marking a paper template on the baseboard using you longest vehicles in the middle AND at the corners where buffers are. Make a template check against the coach adjust as necessary. Make out of card when you’re happy 1-2mm grey board or alike.
      Then glue the card structure, as I showed in the video, to the top that you’ve just made. position on the layout make any adjustments using a file and glass paper, then apply textured papers.
      Here’s the OO gauge video:
      ua-cam.com/video/QWZfTmnR3ho/v-deo.html
      Any questions just say..

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  2 роки тому

      I make the model then varnish the whole thing. The idea is to seal against moisture. My layouts are indoors. However, if yours are in an attic or shed where temperature fluctuations are more extreme I would give it a couple of coats.
      Glue, again it depends on your environment. I use a lot of PVA, pritt stick (PVA in a stick) and super glue.
      If your in a damp environment use something like UHU, superglue or Gorilla contact adhesive (clear)in a tube.
      Many glues will do the job as will the varnishes. Any Matt acrylic varnish. They are all similar but it’s the prices that vary. I do hope that’s helpful but I buy small amounts of something, try it, if it works for you over a whole year, great stick to it. If you find models ungluing or warping try something different. I strongly advise against oil based varnish ie polyurethane varnish as this will ‘yellow’ your models over time. Ie with acrylic paints and varnishes you wash your brushes in water (NOT WHITE SPIRIT).
      If you can, draw the curtains on really sunny days to help stop fading. Acrylic varnish really does help.
      Anything else, just say…
