Really like the tunnel portal. The shot at the end through it gave a great camera angle. Even when you have the remainder of the scenery back in place, that is going to give great shots of trains entering and leaving. Stephen
Thank you, I really want to get a small, but good quality camera that could perhaps sit track side, in the tunnels, on platforms etc etc. Think you are right about the camera angles just can’t get the phone into such places easily due to its size. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
Hi John, good work mate, the tunnel portal looks great and once you’ve completed blending it all in no one will no the amount of surgery this took, lol! Really good to see the four tracks are working, I can’t wait to have four trains running at Exehaven, be a while yet though! Cheers John, John
Your modelling and inventiveness is definately top class. Let’s not forget your cad/design skills which is an example to us all. I always find your videos inspirational and I always take away something from them. Thanks for sharing this terrific video John
Hi John, 3d printing don't you just love it and worked so well here its nice to see the trains running through your creation well done. Keep up the good work and we will all await the day you can have all the scenics on the layout work permitting. Cheers Robert.
Hi John - just love that four track tunnel portal. Brilliant job in blending the first part of the scenery back in. You're giving me some ideas as I've just restarted track painting on the next bit of Blackwood. Cheers Euan
Hello John I hope you're well, Great work that 4 track tunnel portal looks brilliant 👏. I really need to invest in a 3D printer. Take care mate all the best.
Hi Deano, thank you. I highly recommend a 3d printer, you can simply make anything you want / need. I must have saved thousands. 2 types of printer, FDM uses plastic filament which melts in the hot end and the printer draws each layer one on top of the previous. Models are stronger but can lack some detail. The wagons you got were printed on an FDM. The other type (resin) does cost more per model and with setup, but the detail is amazing. Models can be more brittle though and require washing to remove excess resin after printing, then need curing under UV light. Maybe worth watching some video on the two types, that may help you to decide.
Hey John, I really like the 3D printed tunnel mouth and I was trying to work out how you printed the inner section as it curves in two axes... did you print it vertically maybe ? Your layout tweaks are looking good.
Hi, glad you like it. The actual tunnel portal was printed flat on the bed. The inner part, yes printed vertically on a raft for extra grip to the bed. It did take almost 8 hours to print, but it would be very difficult to make that shape with its strength any other way.
We have both enjoyed your build thus far. I'm amazed at what can be done with 3D printing! I'm just curious, are there any four-track tunnel portals anywhere in the UK? Bill and Janet from central California.
Hi both of you, yes there are a small number. One particularly in Birmingham, slightly similar to mine. I deliberately chose not to go for 2 portals with 2 tracks each because of space. There would have to be a gap in the middle of the 4 lines for the tunnel wall and this would kick the tracks out wider creating an ‘S’ bend. Hope that explains, besides it’s a model built very different to the real thing.
@piccadillymodelrailways John, you explain it very clearly to me. You are one of several British modelers that I've learned various things from over the years. Keep up the good work. Bill and Janet from central California.
Nice work pal.....do you use a FDM printer for all your printed parts? I've got a 4k resin ....great printer and very detailed prints but its quite brittle cheers lloyd
Thank you, glad you like it. Yes FDM. I do think there is a place for both, FDM parts are usually stronger, but can lack refinement. Whilst resin printers can offer stunning detail, but depending on the resin you use be quite brittle as you say. I understand there are tougher resins, might be worth investigating?
@piccadillymodelrailways yes pros an cons for both....resin is a bit stinky to and can be a bit messy when it comes to cleaning printed parts . I use water washable resin, rather than the isopropyl stuff....you can't just pour the waste down the sink so disposal can be tricky. I've just dug it back out again as it's been packed away for a couple of years as I use it for scale hot rod and custom car building (1/25 scale) I much prefer scratch building on the layout but it comes in handy for small line side bits n bobs.
Great video as always! One thing which of course would have been difficult to achieve. Would engineers not have created two tunnels with double portals? Whilst four track tunnels of course do exist, they tend to be an newer engineering projects, where more modern technology can be employed. As always great to see the progress being made!
You are probably right Keith, but as you said there are 4 track portals, been looking at one in Hockley, Birminham probably wide enough for 5 tracks tbh. Similar to mine in some ways. I am however, happy with the results this far.
A great update John!!! Thanks for sharing! Cheers Onno.
Done a brilliant job on that tunnel John .
Bless you Allan, thank you.
John, that's a good-looking modification! Regards, Stephen.
Bless you thx

Yes 4 tracks on Exhaven will be a sight to behold, look forward to it, so glad I did it.
John, the 3D printed tunnel is superb!
Thank you, so glad you like it.
Clearly you are a man with a plan John. It looks good to me.
Well yeah, you got me. Lol. Think you have to have at least a vague idea what you want.
Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
There is a 4 track tunnel mouth in Hockley Birmingham, they are quite rare. Great job John
Exacrly Chris, that one is kind of similar to mine, lol. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Another wonderful jig saw piece of scenery. Nicely done!
Thank you Norman.
Hi John l love the speed of the N gauge trains it looks the right speed for the scale, All the best Colin from Mossend.
Thank you glad you like it. Need to fit magnetic couplings to the pendolinos, they are bit unstable of late.
Your modelling and inventiveness is definately top class. Let’s not forget your cad/design skills which is an example to us all.

So very kind of you Charlie, Im just having fun. Yet always trying to improve. So glad you enjoy them.

Hopefully Robert, I have definitely slowed down by quite a lot. It will get donewhen Im able, promise, lol
Love it! You have such a tallent and imagination. Thank you for your videos.
So very welcome Matthew, glad you enjoy them.
👌😎 looking good

Ive recently subscribed to scale model experient, fascinating stuff.
@piccadillymodelrailways I'll have a look at that cheers
