    Hello Martin.... nice too see the first part of this beginners guide... I think that it is also important too say that if you start with this hobby it's important too practice on cheap diecast models, models you can find for a few quid.... I've been doing this hobby for almost 40 years now and you can be sure that I have thrown a lot of money in the bin those early years!! Keep up the good work and all the best.... Kurt

    Great advice on E-Bay and especially in starting with a simple model: the best piano teachers have you leaving the first lesson being able to play a tune. Same thing with model cars - get a result you can be pleased with! I've been going about two years now, and every day is still a school day! Ian Treadgold at Blacksquare also does custom decals and I have had great service from him - I've rescued a few models to Code3 standards. On postage, I have seen (here in the Middle East) postage and 'import' charges that totalled twice the asking price of the model, so it does get scary. What's not to like about this? If you can't "like" say nothing and bugger off!

    I've been watching your videos for probably as long as you've been doing them but didn't realise you had only been filming them for only two years.
    I particularly enjoyed this one because it hits the nail on the head as an insight for those interested in taking the restoration plunge.
    It is the tip of the iceberg though as they will find the more absorbed they get (and we both know what happens once the bug bites).
    Keep doing what you're doing. It's great stuff.

    This has the makings of an excellent series Martin. It should be a great help to anyone starting out in the hobby. Adding a link to a comment couldn't be easier: copy/paste the address into the comment and it should automatically format itself. They don't always work and UA-cam can be a bit sniffy about them on occasions but, if they're relevant links, they usually appear fine. As the channel owner, you should have no problemsand you can always edit/delete if you o have problems. One wee tip: I try to leave a few spaces before and after the link and don't put any punctuation(.,:) anywhere near it either.
    Cheers for now,
    Dougie.

      @@martindaredare Not a problem Martin. I just noticed your pinned comment. Have a look at the list you wrote; they've formatted themselves as links, showing just how easy it is. Only the second one actually works but, if you copy/paste the actual web addresses, they all should - it's that easy. 😁

    Some very sound advice Martin. Another good tip for beginners is try models held together by screws rather than rivets so they are super-simple to dismantle & reassemble. Hi martin, I'm new to all this, I found this video vey helpful and am looking forward to viewing the others,
    I'm just in the process of finishing my first restoration, a Corgi Walls Ice Cream Van, it was a bit fiddly but I'm very happy with the outcome, so people like yourself and Bob Willis have been a great help. I'm from the UK originally but have lived in NZ for the past 42 years, so I find the shipping costs from the UK can be stupidly expensive, so I'm trying to source future projects from here in NZ.
    Keep up the good work, cheers, Steve

    I have bought some proper junk off eBay Martin and paid good money for it. You are right about doing your research and don't be afraid to demand your money back if it's not as described. EBay don't like people being ripped off. On the other hand i have also picked up some good buys. Good advice mate, i look forward to the next video. Hi Martin, I think a Beginner’s Guide series is a fine idea. I sure depended on channels like yours when I got started and putting it all together thematically will be a big help to many, I’m sure. The community has grown exponentially even since I got started, so there’s no shortage of newbies out there. As far as eBay tips go (I watched the whole video, as always) did you mention combined shipping? If you buy a few cars off the same buyer, you should be able to get them in one package, which of course is cheaper than paying for postage on two or three boxes. Currently, I’ve been bidding on cars off the same buyer. I wrote him in advance asking about combined shipping and he said sure, he’d wait 11 days for me to get as many as possible and he’d put them all together in one box. That saves a lot of money. I wish you a good week. Stay safe and take care! 🍁👍

    Hi Martin what a great idea this was very informative and a must see for beginners interested in this hobby. Excellent tips on buying from ebey and how to save money on parts. I must admit I got a bit carried away with the first one I did had to buy a door, windscreen, and bumper and paid a bit too much. Talking about parts I got a message on my phone.......THE MAIN REAR SEAL IS ON IT'S WAY..... YAAAAAY😆. So I can put it back together again.... Errr if I can remember how it go's back together it's been so long🤔. I see MR thumbs down 🤪 has got the ump again he's probably not as experienced reading in reverse like the rest of us lol. I'm looking forward to more editorial episodes your never to old to learn new tricks unless your a dog so I'm told. Great video Martin - keep 'em coming. You're totally right about buying tyres in bulk. I started doing restos last year as a lockdown hobby. The intention was to stick to the Dinky Gerry Anderson models (Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet etc) as I was a huge fan when I was a kid (still am if I'm honest!), so buying tyres in bulk didn't make sense as I was only ever going to do a half dozen or so restos. The trouble is, its an addictive hobby and I'm still going, and still buying tyres as and when needed, so yeah, expensive!

    Great video Martin, and very thoughtful to be helping people in this hobby, I think the first videos I watched were Marty’s Matchbox make overs, which started getting me interested in this hobby, I tried a corgi landrover, then another, then another, I searched for more videos and I came across Corgi Bob’s channel, I really started getting into it then, looking for more tips I came across your channel too and the rest is history lol, the bug really took hold. I do exactly the same as you on eBay and all the advice you gave is spot on, a really good guide to starting out in this hobby, I must confess I am not that good at remembering tyre sizes lol, but I do always buy in bigger quantities as you advise. Thanks Martin for taking the time with this first video of what I think will be an excellent series, so many of us get a bit wrapped up in our own restorations that we forget about people starting out, thanks Martin for not forgetting them, great respect to you mate 👍😊

    • @martindaredare
      @martindaredare  3 роки тому

      There are a few ways people remove paint from plastic parts
      Mr muscles even cleaner.
      Brake fluid
      Bleach
      Detiol
      These are the ones that are used .but it what works for you .
      I personally use mr muscles even cleaner its smells and needs a lid on whilst it's working
      But please try any of those .
      Give the parts a good wash in WARM soapy water first, you might be surprised ,
      If you have the warter to hot it can distort the plastic, an old tooth brush will come in handy.

    Hi Martin, Great video Mate, nice to see a face to the voice!, I've learnt some tips here thanks, another silly question if You don't mind?!, I've got Myself a first Matchbox E-Type, I'd forgotten how small they are since Our day as kids!, Just wondered have or do You bother with resto on these?, surely they must be a good beginners first port of call, bought some caustic soda btw, but don't want to melt the 'ruddy' thing!, All the best, take care, Stewart.

    • @martindaredare
      @martindaredare  3 роки тому

      Cheers Stewart, I do have some matchbox vehicles to do , but I chose the larger dinky / corgi toys for beginners because thay are easy to handle, and not so fiddly to paint but its basically the same methods,
      The costic soda shouldn't melt it , once you have removed the wheels and plastic parts ,you dont need much .
      Good luck.
      Next beginners guide will be on the basic tool kit .

My car is the RCMP one and the figures are still ok, tires are decent but will need a repaint. Tires are the knobby ones and I can't find those anyway.
