I'm always surprised by the lack of understanding about skin color and the creative ideas & misconceptions about "turning white." Thanks for sharing a teachable moment & not becoming upset or offended. People come in various shades of brown. We will not become white over time by changing locations. It is genetically impossible unless there is a medical condition. Contrary to common belief, I can't speak for others, but I have no desire to be white. I'm comfortable in my own skin. I dont believe having lighter or darker skin makes anyone better or worse. We are all unique individuals and should be respected and treated as such.

I went to India once with my Indian friends, one had moved from the Punjab at 8yrs old to UK and his wife was originally from the Gujarat. They were dressed in western clothes of course but the locals said to each other “Oh my god, that white man can speak Punjabi!” It was interesting that even though their skin colour was the same, the way they dressed made them seem white to the locals. This was back in 1995 so maybe wouldn’t happen now.

The embarrassed surprise when we replied in English!..! Bah! There will always be ignorant people, disrespectful towards others. 😳 Wow! I am amazed by this African brother's ability to speak Mandarin fluently. Will I ever speak that language?

Thanks for sharing information on your time in China. Keep the blog going, and we can check on your progress, understanding of them, and their understanding of you. Thank you. I speak some Mandarin, but I find it better to just talk English when it is best for me. I have bought three houses in China and currently live in a Villa. I prefer a Villa because it resembles my life in Europe and North America.

The bit about turning white after spending time in Sichuan is so typically Chinese... They tan when they spend a lot of time in the sun, and culturally they have associated that tan look with outdoor work and by extension poverty/ low socioeconomic status. It's not surprising they would assume you become lighter after years away from your native sunny clime, or that you would want to be lighter 😂

Oh wow. That's so true. How in USA redneck started. Working outside. Farmers tan etc. Suits are elite 🤷

The people you are filming are mostly very conscious of the camera, but also surprisingly willing to interact nonetheless. Makes me wonder about the ubiquity of this style of ad hoc video creation in Chinese life NC

in society men by nature are very competitive but when a man meets a man of a different color, the mind sometimes conceives that competitiveness is based on race but it is not.

WOW BROTHA!! sorry... it's a God thing, but you sound soooooo much like my friend Johnny from Columbia. Being as I've never seen him yet (we game online) your voice caught my attention.
I can see that you walk with a friendly spirit, so only watching a minute of this video, I'm sure that you will be able to coax him into seeing you with different 'eyes'.
    Merry Christmas to you also!
    Shalom.

So cool you confronted the slur. I think China & Japan find any foreigner a target until they know you speak their language.
