White Guys Surprise Locals with Rare Chinese Dialect, They are Stunned

  • Me and my Chinese-speaking white friends went to Brooklyn Chinatown to practice our Mandarin, Cantonese, and the rare dialect of Fuzhounese (also known as Fuzhou dialect or Hokchew / Hock Chew), which people speak in this part of Brooklyn. We got lots of smiles and laughs and funny reactions and it turned into a really fun day! It’s always nice to make connections with people using language skills. An inspiring video for people looking to learn languages, I hope!

    • @BradleyTruax7
      @BradleyTruax7 4 роки тому +11

      Milton Holley it would be nice if you followed up your an opinion with some sort of facts to substantiate a claim. I don’t know a whole lot about Nelson Mandela but to empathize with your point I have found mother Theresa to be quite a disgusting human being after reading several of her novels. So I don’t assume he is an entirely good person. The message is what I was sharing. Not an opinion on what I thought about his character. Mother Theresa had a lot of wise sayings but I don’t think much of her as a person. Hopefully this doesn’t sound like an ego thing on my part. But if you don’t understand the message just ask for clarification next time and I’m sure plenty of people would be happy to help you understand the message.

    • @BradleyTruax7
      @BradleyTruax7 4 роки тому +7

      Milton Holley I appreciate you bringing to my attention what type of person he is. But on the other hand that’s not what this discussion is about. It’s simply about connecting with humans. And investing your own time to learn their native tongue and employ it shows a huge sign of respect and in turn they are very gracious to acknowledge that. So I do appreciate you showing me my ignorance. I just just didn’t want to go down this road in the first place. My use of his words had nothing to do with Nelson Mandela but about humans in general. If I can’t get this through than I don’t know what to tell you. But I appreciate your reply.

    I often hear my parents talk about how the Fuzhou dialect won’t be around anymore when I grow up, and as much as I don’t want to believe it, I know it’s true. Out of my family, only a hand full of people, including myself, can speak it. Everyone born in 2005 and after can barely understand or cant at all. Familiar with a lot of other languages as well. It’s sad to see these languages become less common, and it’s the unfortunate truth. Xiaoma has motivated me to continue learning Chinese even though I already speak it. Watching this video put a smile on my face knowing that someone non-native to the culture put effort into learning and immersing himself in our culture. Motivation and dedication is probably the biggest issues people have when learning a language.
      1. It's far from easy and is going to be very challenging.
      2. You are going to want to give up at times or get distracted by other things
      3. Practice makes perfect.
      I recommend books, free videos, and then when you become comfortable with the basics, invest in a more adept program that usually cost money

      The hardest language to learn is mandarin. Then goes Russian. English is one of the easiest languages tbh.

      Ryan Long true. I speak English as my first language, Spanish as my second, and I am working on Japanese as my 3rd. I enjoy learning languages because it helps me talk to others a lot easier.

      It goes both ways. English and Chinese are very different, so people who speak one natively will have trouble with the other, moreso than similar languages.

      I was exposed to many different languages, to me English is one of the easiest languages to learn especially in comparison to Chinese & Arabic.

    I like how they speak Chinese throughout the conversation. When I was learning Russian they would always revert back to English which was very frustrating. But truthfully, my vocabulary was limited so maybe it was frustrating for them.

      @@salma-ns4lg You could try UA-cam or some learning apps. There are videos to help with learning the tones, and like Duolingo to help you with phrases and grammar
