Every time I hear this I am reminded of professor Tolkien's experiences in WWI. The line " I hope that you remember me ", to me, says ' I hope you remember the boy I was when I left here because the man who came back is a different entity entirely. ' I would imagine that the boy who left England died to fire on the mountain, to fire that hollowed souls, that there was blood in the trees, a hope of being remembered, and constant blood on the breeze in the form of artillery or gas of various forms. I hear that in THIS version. That is the longing ache I get from Geoff's version of the song.
War tends to do that, I myself had just graduated high school at 17 and months later was sent to fight in the Desert Storm (Gulf War). We leave as children and even if we aren’t gone for long, we return men who have aged many years.
That's a really great way to put it. War is terrible, all it does is TAKE and it never adds up to anything good. Alongside being basically Mass Murder, it's a form of revenge on a GIANT scale that entire nations take on other nations. What an absolute waste of lives and resources.

Have missed your reactions and analyses of Geoff and Voiceplay. Although I thought you’d done this one already. This has to be my favorite of Geoff´s works so far. The atmosphere, the uniqueness of this composition and the variety of sounds is just sublime. Also, the costumes are great!

Geoff has managed to perform this song like a one act play. He has taken care to convey the story in the song and sing the image of a chaotic wild fire.
So glad you were able to give us your take on Geoff's video - I've been hoping you would do this for a while now! From the moment I first heard it, this became, and continues to be, my favorite of Geoff's solo videos. From the arrangement, to splitting the dwarves out into separate, distinct voices, to the simple but effective lighting of the set (thank you, Eli!), to the costumes and makeup, to the emotional performance, this just has everything I could want. The slow growth in complexity and volume, from a single solo singer to the climax of everyone singing together with the instrumental backing, the song takes us on a journey - not a happy journey, but an emotional one nonetheless. The light at the end of the tunnel isn't the tunnel opening back up, but the light from a dragon's fire that may burn us all. "Somber" is an apt word for this performance - and what a performance it is!

Thank you for coming back to Geoff. Seems like it has been ages. This is one of his best and really shows his range and timbre. It is gorgeous. Note that the newest VoicePlay song is a real banger. Layne outdid himself with the beats. "Sleeping in the Cold Below" from the game WarFrame. And they have Omar singing with them again on it.
We are so fortunate to be able to listen to a talent like Geoff. His arrangements truly are works of genius and as you noted, are only getting better. His most recent release, a cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game is a good example. There's so much space in it, yet the soundscaping will remind you a bit of what he did in The Sound of Silence. It's a remarkable piece, fraught with emotional impact, and Geoff's vocals are absolutely haunting. He always makes me hear a song differently, and this was no exception. Simply amazing.
He really changed "Wicked Game" into something even darker and sadder than the original. Truly a master of finding the emotion in a song and wrenching it forward.
Geoff's "team" is mostly Kathy. Occasionally some of VoicePlay will help out, like Eli with lighting or Tony with costuming. He does hire a makeup artist and "beard wrangler" however. Om videos like Folsom Prison and Blue Christmas it was just him and Kathy. She is amazing.
Pretty sure that Elizabeth knows who works with Geoff and Voiceplay seeing as she has been doing reviews of both for years, and actually was featured on their Ding Dong video.
One thing worth knowing is that the inner ear doesn't hear very low notes as clearly as mid-range and higher ones, and that means that less-than-pure ones, especially, can be vague to the brain. If you're a low bass singer, even with a lot of experience and a good natural ear it can be BRUTAL to stay on pitch and on key, because you literally cannot hear the notes you're singing as clearly as a baritone or tenor can. Monitors, so you're hearing yourself more through your entire ears and not so much from the inside out, can help, but mostly it takes practice and feedback, and, often, listening to playback right after you sing. Geoff's ability to string together complicated melodies of super-low notes is PHENOMENALLY more impressive than it might even seem. There are a bunch of really low-reaching basses hitting it out of the park on UA-cam these days, but Geoff's mobility and accuracy, and the smoothness of it, is unbelievable. Even if you can sing every note he hits, being able to string those low passes together properly -- never mind making it sound natural -- is excruciatingly difficult. And a playback may disappoint you even if you thought you got it clean.
I see some that seem to just be trying to get as low as possible, and some do in fact go lower than he does - but I've yet to find any that can match how CLEAN he is at those tones. I'm sure his actual range is even lower than he does in songs, but he won't do them unless he can keep it pure.
Thank you for reacting to this one Elizabeth, I am in love with this arrangement, it shows Geoff's vocal abilities perfectly. Both the highs and the lows🔥🔥❤❤

He recorded "Misty Mountains," I believe, the same year he was taught the technique. His Subs are kinda rough in that song. But in this song, "I See Fire," his Subs are SMOOOOOOOTH.
As someone who is a bass with a range as low as Geoff's, I loved hearing your description of why low bass notes sound the way they do. I have tried to explain it to people why bass voices sound like fry when it really isn't and couldn't really explain it the way you did. Now I have a better way to describe it to someone. Thank you!

Yes, I believe a creator can make it so when you click on their video, the captions are already on. Geoff creates his captions himself and always has them on, and it is inspired by Kathy's hearing loss.
As an aspiring arranger, he is such an inspiration for me... almost to the point of intimidation, haha! He's so good at wrenching out emotions and conveying them with pristine musical beautiful. I listen to his arrangements, both solo and for VoicePlay, as masterclasses in technique. "I See Fire" is perhaps the best solo song from Geoff, not just the arrangement but the visuals. Simply awe-inspiring!
I appreciate you covering Tolkien film music! ❤❤❤ Geoff is mesmerizing. What an amazing voice! Very somber and bittersweet. A lot of emotion conveyed. I’d love to see you cover one by Billy Boyd aka Pippin. Also the Vikings theme song “if I had a heart”. 😊
Thank you for an exceptional reaction with very interesting musical observations as well as with constant amazement about Geoff's extraordinary talent! It has been said a few times in the comments already, but Geoff's latest 'Wicked Game' is worth a reaction and analysis.
Wonderful reaction and long overdue! I’m so surprised you haven’t yet reacted to VoicePlay’s In The Hall Of The Mountain King. It’s absolutely brilliant.
Hi Elizabeth, my feelings about this version is that we are listening to men who are resigned to their fate and are trying to come to grips with the situation. I really like this. Stay safe and stay well. 😎✌🏻🤟🏻🖖🏻
May I humbly suggest you react to Bobby McFerrin? You will find none better at a Capella. The best example of his vocal ability is entitled 'Drive'. This is a man who can sing two separate notes simultaneously (one in his vocal chords and one with his lips} while using his body as percussion. If that doesn't spark your interest, I don't know what will. For the best example of his performance style, try 'LIVE Improvisation at The Kennedy Center'. He plays the audience and choir as instruments. Wonderful man who MUST be seen in concert once in one's lifetime.
I really, really love Geoff and his voice as much as you do. But I also really, really think that you should check out anther bass singer, Colm McGuiness. He's also done "I see fire", even twice, solo and as a collaboration with Jonathan Young and Matthew Heafy. But what will really, really blow your mind is his Norse folk metal rendition of "My mother told me".
Thank you for another Geoff analysis, finally! I was looking forward to another one - I don't want to think in a "top x list" of Geoff's songs for myself, because every song has something special. Some songs I'm more connected to, etc. But i would say, "I see fire" is my favorite "Multiple Geoff" work (where "Wicked Game" is my favorite "Single Geoff" work, when categorizing by the video production). Here, Geoff shows his quality of range perfectly. You really hear 4 different characters singing, like you see in the video. And the song itself is beautifully written by Ed Sheeran. Great analysis and I appreciate you, sharing not only professional facts, but your personal impressions, feelings and opinion, too. Thank you very much and 'see you in the next one'! 😊
So good to see you back on Geoff (and hopefully VP soon too!). This is one of Geoff's all-time best, imo 💯 For the captions, go to your YT menu (click on upper left bun if needed to show). Click on Playback & Performance, and un-check the boxes related to captions. Good luck!
I love the camera going out of focus just long enough to realize it’s focused on Sting in the background. How appropriate lol. This is a lovely cover. His range is crazy! Of course you’re familiar with the original, but I’d still enjoy a video on some of Ed Sheeran’s work. The original of this song has always hit the spot for me. I could listen to it on repeat for hours, but with amazing covers like this one I could mix it up a little. Such a great song.
Well, it’s definitely not a capella but I always love seeing you react to Geoff and VoicePlay!! VoicePlay’s latest, Sleeping in the Cold Below is definitely one worth a detailed analysis! The best one they’ve put out in a long time I think ❤
The fact that you love Brandon Sanderson makes my heart happy! I'm huge into fantasy, and him and Patrick Rothfuss are some of my favorite. Although the latter needs to finish his Kingkiller series already lol.
No worries about Brandon though....unless life throws him a curveball, he's going to finish his series while giving us new books regularly. Life is good, but was expensive last year, being a Sanderson fan!
This song will forever give me tears. The pure and simple singing in this song is primarily what hits my emotions. I'm currently trying to copy this song, because more folks need to feel that even though the future looks like a dark and firey mountain, they won't do it alone. Its inspiring to me.
I saw a comment on another reaction video that I think sums up the difference between the versions of this song. The original was the bard’s version and this is the battle-weary warrior’s version.
So happy to see you doing Geoff again, and I hope you get to Voiceplay's cosmic new one! Or their "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which is so much fun! Also Geoff's latest, "Wicked Game!" Definitely one of his best, like this one. What I really love in this one is how he pronounces "Fire." It's almost an "ahh" sound, it's airier, softer, less sharp than the way it's typically said, with an "eye" sound. By the way, your nails look fabulous! And your hair totally matches Geoff's video! 😉
Exactly!!! : ) Geoff is just simply amazing- his ability is outrageous! In this setting -- I said it the 1st I'd listened (it may have been a few instances of listening -- or many!), the 4th is just totally different; if you didn't know it was Geoff, you'd never know it was the same guy, the same voice ....... completely different. I personally think this is the best... it has everything!!! Thank you, totally enjoyed the R&A (always do!) Be Safe
Thanks for the reaction Elizabeth. Now that Austin is leaving home free. You should do another home free video. I suggest playing with fire. It was written by Austin.
Hi Elizabeth, I've been turned on to some artist i wound never have heard of because of you. All your analysis really helps me with my guitar playing. I've really learned to recognize and listen for those qualities that you mention. You're a grear teacher! Thank you.
Love your reactions because you're so excited, so giddy like a little child, which is a joy to watch and as a non musician your analysis is so easy to understand. Of course my favourite videos are you reacting to Geoff or Voiceplay :) Also I've been waiting so long for this song. Because I'm super curious what your thoughts are. It's one of my faves from Geoff.
the only way I can simplify the feeling I felt is to imagine dropping a stone in a pool and the ripples reverberating off the edge of the pool and bouncing off the ripples, his voice did that exact thingto me but throughout the body from ears to feet to head. I hope it made sense because I can't explain the feeling
The raspiness of the phrase "keep watching over durins son" with the whooshy effect into the wide humming really encapsulates the whole "misty mountain" aesthetic
What I love about this cover of I See Fire is that... like you point out, this is the cover of it where the adventuring party has just defeated one powerful boss and has another one knocking on their door. This cover has SO much "eye of the storm" energy, where they've passed through the wind wall on one side and having that moment to breathe before the other wall slams into them. This song is meant to be one of dread, because that is where it sits in the story. In the last few years, I've come to feel... actually kind of bad for the music from movies that I didn't care for. I See Fire, The Last Goodbye, even Yellow Flicker Beat. All songs that are just... amazing songs in their own right, but that I... kind of blew past because of my feelings for the movies they were attached to. At least now I'm able to appreciate them, having heard some amazing covers.
So happy to see you come back to Geoff! I always was a little surprised by how popular his Misty Mountains cover was, for myself I thought he sang it beautifully and it was a very good arrangement, but the song itself did absolutely nothing for me. So, as one of his patrons, when he first released some preview photos of this, and with my not being familiar with the song, I was really not excited at all. But it is one of my very favorite of all of his arrangements, right up there with Shenandoah for it being one that always grabs me because of the emotion and beauty of the song. And after he admitted himself, that he found this song to be a lot more interesting and emotional than Misty Mountains, I didn't feel quite so guilty about not liking that first dwarf song as well, LOL.
Geoff is a dragon slayer with the voice of a dragon for sure with that voice. I love his arrangements so much and his layering is spot on! I would suggest you check out Peter Hollens version of this song. Different but on of his best

I fully agree! I prefer this version over any version I've ever heard. Including the original
Everything about this is beautiful ...sad , melancholy but incredibly beautiful !
I appreciate you covering Tolkien film music! ❤❤❤
Geoff is mesmerizing. What an amazing voice! Very somber and bittersweet. A lot of emotion conveyed.
I’d love to see you cover one by Billy Boyd aka Pippin.
Also the Vikings theme song “if I had a heart”. 😊
I really enjoy the way you breakdown the info behind the songs we love. Especially for Voiceplay and Geoff. Please react to more of their music!
Haunting and filled with somber emotion; Geoff’s cover is stunning. Thank you so much for this reaction and analysis.
❤
Super excited for this! Been hoping you'd get back around to Geoff!
His voice is ridiculous! And I mean that in the best possible way. I've never heard anything like it and I LOVE it!!!
Im man who probably hasn't really cried in like over 10 years but this one got to me for some reason... Just wow
This is one of Geoff's all-time best, imo 💯
For the captions, go to your YT menu (click on upper left bun if needed to show). Click on Playback & Performance, and un-check the boxes related to captions. Good luck!
This, Till Then, and Shenandoah are my favorites of his
I love the camera going out of focus just long enough to realize it’s focused on Sting in the background.
This is one of my favorite Geoff covers
Well, it’s definitely not a capella but I always love seeing you react to Geoff and VoicePlay!! VoicePlay’s latest, Sleeping in the Cold Below is definitely one worth a detailed analysis! The best one they’ve put out in a long time I think ❤
he’s a beautiful man in every way ❤
Geoff is amazing! This was a banger of a video.
the Orginal is better
I very much enjoy your reactions! I love your giggle at the low notes and your appreciation of an artist's technique. ❤
This is Geoff's song...I get chills every time I come back to listen again.
The song fits so well with the 3 characters that he is dressed as Feli, Kili, and Thorin were all killed the the book.
ohhhh can't wait!! 🔥🔥
This song will forever give me tears. The pure and simple singing in this song is primarily what hits my emotions. I'm currently trying to copy this song, because more folks need to feel that even though the future looks like a dark and firey mountain, they won't do it alone. Its inspiring to me.
This cat has been a vocal favourite ever since I first heard him.
Jeff truly is an exceptional talent. He is a one-man choir! And it's so good to know he shares it too.
oh I have to stop and go get my headphones for this one 💜✨ amazing and magic
I saw a comment on another reaction video that I think sums up the difference between the versions of this song. The original was the bard’s version and this is the battle-weary warrior’s version.
That's spot on!
a Cover not more
So happy to see you doing Geoff again, and I hope you get to Voiceplay's cosmic new one!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Extremely emotional cover, ive listened to it at least 100 times and it doesnt get old
gotta love Sting in the background of this video (in addition to everything else about it, naturally)
Thanks! I've been waiting! You are one of my favorites and Geoff is my favorite artist!
Thanks for the reaction Elizabeth. Now that Austin is leaving home free. You should do another home free video. I suggest playing with fire. It was written by Austin.
Oh my, I don't think I knew Austin was leaving Home Free!!!
They just announced it
Hi Elizabeth, I've been turned on to some artist i wound never have heard of because of you.
Of course my favourite videos are you reacting to Geoff or Voiceplay :)
Also I've been waiting so long for this song.
Is it just me or does the reverberation in his voice just keep building goosebumps on top of goosebumps.
I love how excited and nerdy you get over voices like Geoff’s!
What an interesting duet you two could perform! He starts in his range, then you come in with yours. That could be amazing. ❤
The raspiness of the phrase "keep watching over durins son" with the whooshy effect into the wide humming really encapsulates the whole "misty mountain" aesthetic
Ooooh. More Geoff! This man is made for tunes like this. Quick, somebody get him into a Tolkein movie. :P ##HobbitonBass
A MCU Movie? The Human Earthquake?

Holy cow your feeling you put in this reaction blows me away you are my favorite beautiful reactor awesome thank you Geoff castelluchi is a god also
The first time I saw this video I genuinely thought it was one Geoff and 3 other guys, whoever did the makeup and costumes has my respect.
My favorite Geoff cover!
#letsgettoit and unleash the Geoffquake 😮
woah...it wasn't until halfway through that I wrapped my mind around the fact that this is ONE man singing...thats unreal.
It's so very nice to watch one of these live
Funny you mention it, closed captioning turned on automatically for watching this video..... i've been missing your coverage of Geoff and VoicePlay
Geoff's cover of "Wicked Game" is stunning.
I would LOVE to see you react to almost anything from the "Quadrophenia" album by the Who!"Love Reign O'er Me" and "The Real Me" are tremendous!
While I absolutely love all of your content I have missed the Geoff and the Voiceplay reactions! Thabks for coming back to these!!!
Geoff is a dragon slayer with the voice of a dragon for sure with that voice. I love his arrangements so much and his layering is spot on! I would suggest you check out Peter Hollens version of this song. Different but on of his best
Never thought you would do an Ed Sheeran song. Even if it is sung by someone else.
Notification on.
Roads to Madness..Queensryce off "The Warning"album,a definite masterclass when it comes to Metal vocals, you will be soooooo glad you took me up on it,and yes there are other vocal coach/youtuber's out there BUT,,I value your opinion a tad higher..it's mid eighties, way ahead of its time,do dissect and enjoy..
I particularly like Queenryche's I AM I and LAST CHANCE IN PARIS (is that the title... it's been so long now...)
I'm not saying Geoff is the best vocalist in the world, I'm just saying I can't name one indisputably better.
His Misty Mountains video had a lot of the same qualities, I thought, even if his technique and range have grown a lot since then. What can I say, the dude just *gets* dwarves.
Normally I don't comment on youtube but I think it's about time I say thank you for your reaction videos. I have now been on your channel almost since the beginning, whether it was Rock, Pop or Classic, your analyzes are always exciting. Here, too, you make me aware of some notes that I would otherwise not notice. I just wanted to thank you for that. Always exciting to hear your analyzes of the songs. If you like fantasy movies and their soundtracks, I think this one is worth your analysis. I know you know Eivør. A reaction video would be great but you can also just enjoy it for yourself. Thx for your reaction videos, love them.
Eivør - The Last Kingdom: Main Theme (Live at Hammersmith Apollo)
Would live to see a collab between you and Geoff. ❤
Please do a reaction video to Geoff's new solo cover of..Wicket Game. He sang it so sad & deep. It is amazing. Also Voice Plays newest cover of..Sleeping In The Cold Below. Please react to it for us.
I hear a lot of folks saying that those 4 people are doing a magnificent job. Didn't realize it's ALL Geoff. This really is one I find is his best.
This is my favorite from Goeff. The arrangement, the vocals, the emotion - the whole thing.
I really like this song. Never heard it before. Kind of reminds me of what may have been sung around a campfire before a battle where they knew it was a long shot to win it. Very cool.
