Just did this job; start-to-finish and cleanup, about 30 minutes. These instructions are perfect. My bushings looked almost identical to yours, especially the discoloration on the bottom one. Made a HUGE difference in how smooth it shifts now. Thank you so much!
My 1991 22R-E Truck Bushings went out in 1998 c. 86,000-mi. Dealership repair $100. Only lasted 23 years! Ha ha. Went out again today at 131,800-mi. Deteriorate from 1/ Time and 2/ Wear. Just like tires. Thanks for a GREAT video! This time around will save my $100 by DIY'ing it. Thanks Mate!
This literally just started happening to me! Glad I found this video. Ordered the bushings on ebay for $23.00 shipped. One seller was selling both parts together! Appreciate it!
Thank you so much for this video! I did the job yesterday, at 200k my seal was disintegrated, it was almost impossible to shift. What a difference! The most difficult part was to put metal plate back- I have 4x4, so it's two levers. It is smooth like a butter now! Now off to replace clutch cylinders
Just wanted to say thanks! I had a lot of consideration to having my transmission rebuilt. I ordered the kit and replaced the bushings, and now I can FIND 5th gear and reverse on my 98' tacoma 2 wheel drive 2.7, 4 banger. The 1st through 5th geer is tight spaced like new, "(still going places)" with my antique truck with more than 465 thousand Original miles, never rebuilt. Still cold air too! Love these Toyotas! Thanks so much for sharing this video!
I’m at 185k with my ‘97 Tacoma (2.7 4wd), and as the original owner I KNOW the tranny has been well taken care of. I just started missing shifts into 3rd and 5th this week, so here I am. Thank you for the video. I’m ordering bushings tonight.
I discovered that bushing before the world ever knew what UA-cam was. If you can pick up on the shifter and it works, then the bushing under it is wore out. Great video. I just wish it was around back then. Would have saved me some headaches. But I fixed mine back then same as you did. $12 later and I was back baby! Great feeling to have it work like it's supposed to. Thanks for the video.
I have a Tacoma 5 speed in my 65 Austin Healey 3000 and it became difficult to shift. Not only was the bushing toast, the conical spring was broken. FIXED !!!! Thanks for posting this video
Thanks so much I thought I might need a new trans. Toyota had the parts in stock, that was $35 including taxes. Took 1 hour and worked perfect. The old black ring came out in pieces. Thanks again!!!
Thank you. I was getting quoted total rebuilds. It turns out that this is one of the few weaknesses of these T100's, well, every decade and 50,000 miles now that they are older. I have the same model year as you. Now I just need to adjust the valves. That's suppose to be part of a regular tune up, but I've never met a mechanic that would do it.
AAHHHH!!!! This is EXACTLY what i needed to know. Thank you so very much for making and sharing this video! I'll be doing this when I get back into town. You rock!
I've got an old side shift toyota camper I'm trying to rebuild with new boots and gaskets and the shifter retainer collar thing has been kicking my ass. after watching this I'm going to attack it with new emphasis after dousing it in PB blaster when i get home from work. This video gave me the confidence!
Thanks for the video. My truck is doing something similiar and I'm heading to the shop to check that out right now. So far it's just hard to get into first and will pop out sometimes but I have noticed that it's been getting harder to shift in general. I was chalking it up to having over 220,000 miles on a 31 year old truck.
I did this for my 1990 Toyota 4Runner 4 by, it has never been done and the seal that was supposed to be there was and probably in a transmission couldn't believe it. Now it shifts alot better and is not as wobbly as it was before. thanks
I started this job today on my 96 Tacoma with 270,000 miles that I bought new in 96. Bushing replaced once before around 2005 by a mechanic, tried it myself today and blocked getting that twist cap off. The channel lock handles are genius, try it tomorrow and report back
Well vou did a great , useful video here. Many would blame the transmission gear bearings. Which of course can be the case. But not in this one. Thanks

Thanks 1991 Toyota, apparently this is a Common prob with a lot of model yrs. min started with intermittent 5 th gear and reverse then finally could not reverse . When I did the shifter went all the way right! Felt like it was broken. Went to dealer and got it . Stock items. Went home put it on less than 1hr. And wallla! Fixed both shift problems . Unreal. Also I prev had a bracket welds broken on pedal shifter and that’s a mission to fix . See other people videos. But try this fix first too.
Thanks for the video......I was grinding gears 3/4........I took my Tacoma to a transmission shop.........they claimed the Syncro gears were shot - $1200 fix........researching syncro gear replacement I stumbled upon this video.......$30 in parts.....2 bushings.........fixed........Thanks........
Too many times mechanics are mere parts replacement techs opening up transmissions replacing good syncro gears and stumbling upon the bad, easy to get to, affordable bushings (that are the actual problem). The best thing about the internet is the UA-cam.
Five years ago, I bought my base 2wd '96 Tacoma, for $400. It only had 71K on the clock, but would not go into first or third gear. According to the seller, the repair estimate he got was $2400! Based on my experience, and what I read then, and now, online, the first thing to do is definitely check/replace the shifter saddle and bushing. In my case, there were complications. Apparently, plastic chunks from the saddle had jammed the internal shift-linkage. But I was able to force it into both gears. After driving it for several weeks, the resistance gradually disappeared. I suspect this ground up the chunks into tiny pieces, which then fell harmlessly to the bottom of the gearbox. Now there IS a shifter-cover on the gearbox that I could have (maybe should have) unbolted to check the linkage. But I feared that small metal parts might fall inside, and then I'd have to pull the whole gearbox out. Ironically, three years later, I did have to pull the gearbox to R&R the clutch after it started slipping. I figure the previous owner starting out in second gear probably helped kill it. The parts only cost $130. But there's no removable cross-member under my 2WD Tacoma's gearbox. Working on ramps in my driveway, the clutch job took nearly a week! But at least the fluid got changed, along with all that ground up plastic!
Sounds like a couple of people had the same problem I ended up having. Couldn't get the retainer to depress. Then it dawned on me that perhaps the bushing was so far gone that it wasn't holding up the retainer. That ended up being the case. All I needed to do was to turn as the retainer was already down.
Thank you so much for this video. I have the same exact model truck and I have 1st but won't go into second so I have to go straight into 3rd. And sometimes it pops out of first. My mechanic told me I needed a new transmission. I am going to try this!
I’m having the similar problems with 3rd and 5th gear and my coworkers were saying that it is the transmission which made me panic a bit because I don’t have that cash right now to do a rebuild, but I’m going to give this a shot and really hope this helps out
Clean it really well. So that it’s not dusty, or slippery. I used the handle side of a pair of channel locks. There was rubber on the handle push down really hard and turn counterclockwise. It will pop up and come out. It’s not easy to do. But You will get it.
Thanks Kent, the chanel locks and counterclockwise are key to popping it out, 190k mi and was just small grit left! Amazing i still had 1 and 2nd, wouldnt stay in 3 4 5. Popped out in one day, not gradually. 40 bucks for the two parts in my area. I sliced 3 corners of the carpet to ease getting things in and out.
Awesome video 📹. I'm having a similar issue with my 2015 scion tc it tends to not to engage in to first gear or reverse . So I may need to change those bushings like you did on your truck.
i used this video to guide me thru the same repair on my 1991 Hilux Pickup (Toyota) that would jump out of first gear if I did not hold the shifter when moving off of a full stop. Put up with that for 7 years before I stumbled on this video. Took about an hour, mostly because the shift cap would not unscrew so I could not get the rubber out of my way and had to work around it. I chose to lubricate the parts with motor oil because I was looking right into the transmission case so it seemed obvious that the unit was supposed to be lubricated this way. Ok. Might not have been my best idea but it seemed smarter than using a haphazard lubricant that might eat the plastic parts I just installed. Had to slice the carpet to get the parts out so I planned the cuts and laced them up with black shoelaces to make it look cool. I am 70 and considered this one of the easiest repairs I have every done. Helped that I keep the passenger seat in storage so my German Shepherd can ride with me inside.
I have the same '94 Toy PU, only red. I've had no issues shifting, but when it was up on the rack the other day, it appeared to be gushing gear oil out of the shifter connection. I'm gonna guess my bushing is destroyed or missing as well! Thanks for putting this up, I could not see how to remove the shifter boot, seems the carpet is glued to the floor! I will try again once I get the correct parts. Just turned over 266,000 miles this week! runs great but in need of some TLC, I'd love that new truck ride, but the insurance and registration (in CA) fees are prohibitive! Leaking at the valve cover gasket as well, but these are minor and easy fixes. My steering gearbox is failing though also, and I'm not sure if I can do that job.
With very few exceptions, this process is the same for all variants of the first gen Tacomas. The rubber seat is always a decomposed mess in every one I’ve seen. My local dealer charges $26 for the seat and bushing.
hey Boss Any advice will be highly apretiated Ford Transit 2004 It began with gear 2 taking 2 times to change sometimes. Now i get situations when at traffic light and can not change any gear some times and then after a minute or so after restarting engine and pressing gears and clutch it all works again. i happen few times a day on some days. Inside van nothing leaking arround pedals.
marlin crawlers sells a replacement for the parts. You need to know which transmission you have but that is on the door tag. They have a good reputation and claim a better than factory part.
I had to add 80 minutes to your 20. Had a hell of a time lining up the screws under the rug through the 2 rubber boots and the metal frame into the transmission tunnel. PIA when you can’t see where the holes are.
that metal slotted cuff at the base of the gear shifter, I can't get mine to move. are there any tricks? I tried channel lock handle, just like you show, but it won't budge. it just won't move down far enough no even with the maximum force I can muster.
So two days ago, my little civic got stuck in 3rd gear but not the gear lever itself. The lever became loose and you can literally do a circle with it. The entire time, though, it was stuck in 3rd gear. I had no neutral or reverse. Took it to the shop, it’s still in there. They’re still « looking ». Could it possibly be this??
I have hard time starting the engine. It starts in the morning, but after engine warms up, stepping on the clutch pedal deep and turn the key on nothing moves. I understand that there's a engine switch at the bottom of the clutch pedal. Unless it's depressed by the pedal(to all the way), it won't start. It's been hard since I bought it(2000 Tacoma) but lately it's becoming even harder. What can be the cause? I will adjust the pedal switch(found it online) and see if it works but if it doesn't, I'll be in big trouble.
If you're worried about [unknown type] rubber or plastic putting up with grease... it's hard to go wrong with silicone. Your shifter isn't a spinning part anyway, and just needs a little something to stay smooth and quiet.
Good question. I essentially could not shift. I BARELY got home. And I had to take my sister to the airport. It was like the last part of the bushing disintegrated as I was coming home.
🇺🇸 👍 I am a real ASE certified master auto technician with over 55 years with real Hands-on training of real experience I really could not have did not Any better than with you did really Replace those 2 transmission Bush's you did a real excellent job 👍
Mr. Garland - A fellow hands-on experienced can-do brother . Thanks for the kind comments. I grew up in a machine shop. I'm also have certification - Honda factory certified motorcycle mechanic. So I have a 45 years of hands on experience too. Woo-hoo! Thanks again for the nice comment Sir.
I have a 1993 Toyota 4x4 3.0 liter truck and the shop told me that I need to replace the slave cylinder and the clutch for 1900.00 dollars. So I went and bought a brand new truck for 37,000 dollars. I still have the Toyota and want to fix it and I'll try this. If this is the problem im gonna shit self because now I have a nice truck payment and I could have fixed it by doing this. But I also have to install new leaf springs and front suspension so it's still needs some work but im kerping this neat truck. It has 228,000 miles and drives like a dreamwhen running. I still turn it on and warm it up every week and put it in gear and dtive it up and down alley to keep it good.
When in doubt silicone paste. I've never had it eat plastic or rubber. My understanding is that it's basically inert so compatable with nearly anything.
Got a '07 Toy. Matrix. While in 4th for a minute, stick snapped back to Neutral. Did that a few times that day on highway. Then l tried duplicating that again in 4th with 200 xtra lbs of weight another day..nothing happened. Don't want to force it on high rpm in fourth. Not sure what's up. Just spent 1,300 on wife's other Toy. for tires and frnt. links. Any ideas?
I know this video is a couple years old but what if it has no problems shifting when the truck is stationary but when it's turned on it doesn't shift into gear?
That sounds like a different problem. Because the shifting was terrible, no matter what, whether the truck was running or not. Was a matter of the bushings, at the shift lever being shot. Your truck may have a different problem - Kent

I love the chrome on yours. Mine is a base model. Front trim was all black when new. Mostly rust now lol.
Hardest part is pushing and turning springer collar.I used two lg screw drivers ,pried collar down and turned simple .

thanks, i just bought the parts and will get the grease and make sure I label . and see how it goes. Probably will take me more than 20 minutes. LOL
Yes, saying that it would take 20 minutes was a bit optimistic. Nonetheless, it’s a pretty straightforward repair
Instead of a pair of channel locks. A 19mm wrench works perfectly.
19mm wrench works better than a channel-locks. Fantastic! Good to get that in the comments to make the job easier for folks. - Kent
nice! Thank you for making this...
Crumbled rubber did not go into transmission parts?
I think I got most of it outta there
R151F 4X4 V6/Turbo trans seem not to suffer from seat sub assy/ bushing wear. I have noticed 2wd trucks suffering the most.
Agreed
that metal slotted cuff at the base of the gear shifter, I can't get mine to move. are there any tricks? I tried channel lock handle, just like you show, but it won't budge. it just won't move down far enough no even with the maximum force I can muster.
Penalty! Spray some penatrant , rust release, in there. Tap on it with a small hammer and a drift to loosen it up. You'll get it!
@@KentSchneeveis thanks man, I appreciate it.
Can this be done if I only have the black bushing replacement?
Yes. It is useful. Thank you so much.
Thanks bro help so much
I have hard time starting the engine.
Thx man very helpful
Would this still work if you're only having this problem with one gear?
Mitch - I bet it would. It's worth at try at any rate.
thank you it helps me very well
Good vids and tips! Thanks! ✌
If you're worried about [unknown type] rubber or plastic putting up with grease... it's hard to go wrong with silicone. Your shifter isn't a spinning part anyway, and just needs a little something to stay smooth and quiet.
Very good point. Silicone grease would be the best option. Why didn't I think of that?
what was it like shifting before you did this repair?
Good question. I essentially could not shift. I BARELY got home. And I had to take my sister to the airport. It was like the last part of the bushing disintegrated as I was coming home.
@@KentSchneeveis Ok, thanks for the help. Keep up the great videos :)
Did gears slowly get harder to change over time until you could barely change at all?
It slowly was getting bad, then it got so bad I could barely shift.
Nice shoes and socks dude, lol!
😁
🇺🇸 👍 I am a real ASE certified master auto technician with over 55 years with real Hands-on training of real experience I really could not have did not Any better than with you did really Replace those 2 transmission Bush's you did a real excellent job 👍
Mr. Garland - A fellow hands-on experienced can-do brother . Thanks for the kind comments. I grew up in a machine shop. I'm also have certification - Honda factory certified motorcycle mechanic. So I have a 45 years of hands on experience too. Woo-hoo! Thanks again for the nice comment Sir.
My shifter was very sloppy...Replaced both bushings and its still sloppy...So what the heck is wrong??
Is any body know if this is the same or similar to the 1980 with 20 R.
Can we put gear oil before fixing transmission stick?
sure, I can't imagine why not ;-)
@@KentSchneeveis thanks
What symptoms did you have?
My pickup won’t go into gear at all while running but it goes into gear while off.
Similar symptoms as i remember
Whats the transmission is that
5-speed manual transmission
Any tips for depressing and turning a stuck retaining clip? I’m stuck at that step.
My 98 4runner won’t turn at all and it depresses slightly.
Try adding some sort of penetrating oil, not just WD40. Tap on it with something, oil it again. Keep trying, you'll get it!
@@guitarfixx4652 thanks I'll give that a shot.
Guitar Fixx no luck. Perhaps the bushing fell apart and is keeping the cap from depressing fully. What a bummer
Hmmm.... if the bushing fell apart I don't think it would make any difference . Ask a buddy to give it a shot. You'll get it!
Best video thanks
Thx man help a lot.
Hows you're car sir is work after a repair stick gear?
Thanks for asking. It's been many months and it's working VERY WELL. Like new!
You're doing the right thing by getting a new truck while you can still sell the old one. Hope this shift bushing fix does the trick! = )
Update?
When in doubt silicone paste. I've never had it eat plastic or rubber. My understanding is that it's basically inert so compatable with nearly anything.
Thanks for the 'tip' Much appreciated : -)
do you leave it in gear or put it in neutral?
Neutral, but I suppose it wouldn't really matter.
Just spent 1,300 on wife's other Toy. for tires and frnt. links.
Any ideas?
$1,300 OUCH! It relatively easy to check the bushings at the shift lever. Check that first
The name of this part ?
Shift seat sub assembly, and shift bushing
What modle have u got
This video for a 1994 Toyota Pickup, 5 Speed manual transmission, 22R-E motor, rear wheel drive.
Good job just so you know there would’ve been a lot of that’s what she said moments if I was in your garage
Time to buy a new truck
