    Legend. This instruction is so good that I could understand the directions without the audio on. Top job.

    Buddy thanks for posting this I've been having trouble with the transfer shifter and the last person in there put it on the wrong side of the spring. You saved me buying a shop manual

    I was searching this for long time. This helped me a lot❤️. I met one gearbox 4wd is not working and found there is no such spring at all, lever just fits to that two jaws. I want to see that spring clearly and how it fits

    Marlin Crawler sells these shifter bushings and theyre made from Delrin instead of the brittle plastic like OEM, highly recommend looking into them if your shifter is sloppy as,

    Hi , your video was AWSOME!! I had a local mechanic perform a clutch job on my 01 Tacoma. It leaked real bad after getting it back and found it leaking under the gasket for the 4x4 transfer case cover. I repaired the metal and paper gaskets that appeared to have a slice diagonally across it for some odd reason. It was an accident but didn't have the luxury of time to bring it back, So , I'm working on it at 10pm last night in my garage and used RTV to make the seal. It worked ! My question was this; I tryied to get that spring back into place and for the life of me and partly due to a couple of beers I decided to put the spring to the side. Here is the weird part, the 4x4 shifts perfectly well without the spring. What is it that I'm missing? Thanks again for this great piece of youtube work!

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  3 роки тому

      I think the spring is only there to keep tension on the shifter so it stays in the high range position. When you press forward on the shifter you will go from 4high to 2high. Without the spring a driver not paying attention could accidentally try to shift into low range while traveling at speed.

    A question: does the transfer shifter use the same kind of bushings as the transmission shifter? I need to change the transmission of a LN65L but I am afraid of damaging the transfer shifter

    Very helpful video. Thank you. Do both the transfer case shifter lever need a bushing? Part number? Toyota is telling me that it doesn't require a bushing.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому

      I thought there was a bushing in both the transfercase and the transmission. At least there is normally rubber bits in the seat of the transfercase shift tower. If I find the part number for the transfercase shifter I will let you know.

      @@ThePracticalMechanic I was able to find aftermarket bushing (lever seat) through yotamasters for both transmission and transfer case. If I can't find a part number, I will consider getting those aftermarkets. Thank you again for responding and putting up valuable info. I appreciate videos of this nature. Learning has occurred.

      @@damador2424 I looked on Yotamasters and they only carry the HD shift seat for the toyota pick but not for the r150f. i see they have a suzuki samurai transfercase seal. have you tried that seal yet? does it fit? toyota don't sell the transfer case seal.

      @damador2424 4 роки тому

      @@JoeOster I was able to find the part and replaced it. Unfortunately, I still have the same issue. Truck slips out of first, so I thought my clutch and this bushing were the culprits. Replaced clutch, still have an issue. Looking into transmission now. I dropped it last weekend. Now I just need to rebuild or get someone to rebuild.

    Man stupid question what do you do if you drop the pivot shifter cup into the transmission?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 років тому +2

      There’s no easy way to retrieve it. Even pulling the shifter plate off may not give you access to it. They come in to the shop all the time broken or missing so I can only assume that they have fallen into the transmission. The transmission years will probably just chew it up if you get stuck in a gear and you’ll probably never even notice. You can always drive it for a while and then drain the transmission fluid and see if pieces of it come out. If the fluid is new fluid then you can always stream it with the screen or a coffee filter and then reuse it. Hope that helps.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  2 роки тому +1

      Yes and no. The bolt pattern is the same but the transfer case output is on the opposite side. The clutch slave cylinder is also on the opposite side. I have a 1990 4Runner that I replaced the 3.0 with a 3.4. That swap requires custom exhaust and wiring.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  4 роки тому

      The shifter won’t move or is just flopping around or feels normal but the car won’t move? It’s possible that the transfer case shifter is installed wrong and the transfer case is in neutral or the transmission shifter isn’t installed properly and the shift rail is stuck in one position.

      The bushing or the retainer. The retainer should be built into the shifter for the transmission and the snap ring for the transfer case is probably only available used or from the dealer. Not all dealer still lookup parts for the older trucks because they have to reference a microfiche unless they know the part number.

      Is it stuck in 2hi, 4hi or 4lo? Has the shifter been removed? How long has it been acting up?
      I have only seen a stuck shifter a few times and there was rust inside the transfer case on two of them and a damaged shift rod on the other one.
      If I was checking it out I would pull the shifter to see if I could manually get the shift rods to move. The rod on the right is for 2hi-4hi operation and the rod on the left is hi-lo operation. There is a small part that only allows the left to operate if the rod on the right is in the forward position same goes for the rod on the right, it only moves if the left rod is in the forward position.

      I bought the truck years ago. Drove it for a year, it’s in 2 hi. Blown head gasket so I let it sit for a few years now. It never would shift into 4x4. Now I’m looking at dropping a new motor in it but wanted to figure out the 4x4 problem. When I bought the truck it had just had a clutch put in and the mechanic said he forgot to re connect the 4x4 linkage? Not sure if that’s even correct. I will try removing the shifter and see what it looks like. Thank you for the quick reply and help!
