I find the most difficult thing to get across to dog parents is not to repeat commands over and over and over. I really appreciate your teaching style and how you show affirmation and rewards.
I just want to say, I've had my dog for a year now and I used to use treat training with her. I didn't know how to transition out of that and she wouldn't do anything I said without food in my hand. Since I've started watching your vids a month ago, I've stopped all treats and followed your advice and have gotten more progress with her in a month than I have for a year. Thanks a bunch dude, and keep doing what you're doing. You're truly saving dogs lives and I really appreciate your advice.
I came for the cute puppy, stayed for the good advice Realised with my 2 dogs they don’t do anything unless you have treats, especially while out. It would be super helpful to be able to change this or at least have them be content with a different type of reward
the treats are yust for helping the dogs getting in positions you want. after a week or 2 start doing the exercises and reduce the rewards and slowly build it off. you will se your dogs will do what you ask whitout you having treats in your hand...
There is so many negative behaviours that we subconsciously teach our dogs. Especially when we are lazy. My heel with my dog tends to be that she's a bit to much In front of my legs, because of the toy that is on the otherside. I noticed this so I gotta retrain her.. this video basically explains it all. Perfect explanation!
Love your videos! I have been having so much success E-Collar training my 11yo Pitbull who has had a terrible recall since puppyhood! He knows all commands and is extremely obedient otherwise. But when he breaks free, he is gone and all training out the door! Until he has run himself to near death, he refuses to acknowledge my commands. Now he gets excited every morning when I take his e-collar from the charger. After our walks, I am able to unleash him, and he then follows me down the driveway and into the house! I would NEVER have imagined this in a million years. He even ignores our chickens, and they can now free range. Totally different dog, and is always ready to know what I’m about to ask of him as soon as I say his name. He seems so much more confident. It has even made it easier to manage our rescue Bulldog, as she now follows his lead. Anyway, we get our new puppy in September, so I’m watching all of your videos to refresh my memories. It’s been a looong time since I’ve raised a puppy. So excited! Thanks for all of your videos.

We just brought home a 12 week old Basenji mix after a month or two of looking for the right fit for our family and our home and of course watching a lot of Tom’s videos. I’ve had dogs and worked with many animals growing up but have only had a cat the last few years so his videos have been such a good refresher. Love this channel so much! His approach is common sense, evidence based, and best for the dogs too.
Great training instruction in this video. I am watching your work in preparation for my new puppy who will be arriving in a few more weeks. I figure it is a good practice for me to learn before attempting to put it into practice. I adopted at the time 5/6 month old female lab mix puppy in February this year. She had a lot of fear and trust issues. She knew nothing except potty training. She has made great stride but tends to challenge you and your patience at times. I’m not sure if she is leash reactive or aggressive with people(and dogs now after she was attacked). I’m not sure how to tell if she is being territorial of us, we aren’t being the correct leader or what. She is a Terrible puller, looking at prong collars now. We have a very difficult time getting her attention when she is focused on something out side on her walks. Watching your videos and finding out what we have or are doing wrong with her have been a big help. Although watching and putting into practice are very different. Thank you so much for doing what your doing!
We're just adopted our seven month old boy and work started from day one. He's eager to learn! Our biggest concern is that he respects is and our other dog. She's strong and confident but so is the puppy. Thank you for providing such helpful information! 🤞🏽

To be honest, taking a puppy for your first dog ever is not such as great idea. Ofc, im happy that ypu are going to help some dog. But just consider to take 2years old dog. It's much more appropriate fot 1st dog :) I took 2years old gsd mix - it was the best choice i have ever made ! Now i know, how many mistakes i could do, by taking puppy... for real. best wishes !

I don't do a lot of puppies but I'm wondering how you undo the swing, etc with an adult dog that was treat trained (only works for food). Thanks for all the knowledge share!
So far we use scrunchy sounds and positive reinforcement / lures to train our puppies.... mama does the rest.The treats they get are warm milk and puppy food. Also lots and lots of play time.

Using food at first to evoke the desired behaviour is a good way to teach the initial command. What most people forget is reduce the use of food and replace it with verbal praise once the dog understands the behaviour for my dog that rougly after 5 times, others may take longer. What I do as well is to use some of new the commands before we do some fun stuff such as going for a walk, play with the frisbee.... This way the dog will associate the command with fun. I do walk my dog off lease so she does need to do them also under ‘stress’. Passing bikes, ( barking) dogs, cars... that means practice it under these conditions a lot. A stronger reward is needed initially but again you need to reduce it. Now I can safe walk her without any food in most conditions. Only cats are tricky if I do not see the first so I can get her focus on me. She was scratchend by one when she was a puppy...
Thanks to these videos I finally have the relationship with my husky I always wanted :) unless i put a harness on, then she is working doing what husky does :p

I have just found your videos as I have just bought a 3 month GSP and after looking at many videos on dog training yours makes the most sense to me. I can see how many of the others would lead to bribing dogs. But I may inadvertently be doing something wrong. She sits when I give her dinner and I have started saying sit before I give her the dinner. I do like the fact she is not jumping up at me but do wonder if for that I should stop saying the sit command. Just wondering am I reinforcing if you sit you get food.
if they are really young they will become adrenaline junkies and will bark at you to do stuff and you teach the dog that there is enjoyable time going away from you

3:29 My big issue with using food only and too much is that they get used to it too much and later they do not work properly. Unless food. Met so many therapy dogs with this issue, they are not obedient, they learn haggling.
I would love to get a video on how to teach the break command :) What I also want to know is, how often should you wash your dog? My friend got her dog as a puppy (Golden Retriever) and she didn't wash him since then (for about 12 months now). And I'm kind of getting concerned about the hygiene of the dog..
Tom did a video with break...the 1st time I understood how it was done. If a puppy I would teach sit, then toss a treat away and say break to get them up. For an older dog I use calm soft voice when teaching a command but let my voice get all squeaky with break..the voice tone told the dog when work ended.
Whoops! First video I’ve watched that I think you were putting out the wrong information on food rewards and how it’s done. Positive reinforcement with food is one of the best methods ever. I’ve been training since 1980 and have a successful business in fact a thriving business in the face of much competition in my area. The success of the positive reinforcement with food rewards and the marker word is undeniable. The engagement needed to do certain tasks with dogs is greatly enhanced by using food rewards in the correct manner.
I have a GSD puppy. He is almost 6 months old. What are your thoughts on using a prong collar with him? I am working with a private trainer so far we have used a pressure lead and star Mark collar. They have no effect on him now. He is very strong and pulls hard. My trainer is great but we are sometimes inconsistent. I also have a Doberman and Weimaraner who are benefitting from the prong collar.
How long do you work a puppy at each session/day? I realize it would depend on the dog; yet for the average person at home what would you suggest? Half hr walk?

Interesting video once again, thank you! My pup usually does well without rewards however the only problem is he whimpers or aka whines every time whenever I tell him a command. How can you prevent this?
Would it be best to take him for a walk to let out his energy? See if the whining subsidies when we return back to training? He's about to be 7 months.

Hi Tom, New to the channel. I've started using some of the techniques you talk about with my 12 year old GSD. My question regarding food reward; what should I use with my GSD who seems to not be food driven at all. She was and still is very responsive to the prong collar (pressure/release) and seems genuinely satisfied with a "good girl" or "good sit/heel/stay/etc." Or do I need to up my treat game and use something more appealing to her, i.e. hotdog's?
If she likes toys you can have a special and fun toy that she only gets to play with when training with you, there are some videos on that on youtube. Robert cabral (if I got his name right) has some vids on that. He can come across a bit harsh and direct sometimes but he's really good with dogs and knows his stuff
He said in this video that treats are NOT what the goal is. Positive responses like you are doing-- praise( good sit, etc) and physical acknowledgement at times( scratch on the head) is the goal. Sounds like your GS is behaving like one. They live to work! 😁

I know this is late, but, the answer is YES, if handled properly. Go to a trainer and it should be a success. We all know the saying, "even old dogs can learn new tricks." How do you think that saying came to be?
At what age do you recommend to start this training? My pup is 11 weeks, I started training but he has started to blatantly ignore me. Im wondering if I asking too much at such a young age.
Training classes should focus on phasing out the food rewards, too... Always having a big bag of food with you at all times is just not realistic. 'real life rewards' such as your voice, a touch, tug toy, ball, etc., are just as important.
My 12 week old GSD bites non-stop when handling or playing or simple training. What can I do, other than chew toys, to decrease the biting? I have children who want to play with him, but until I have exhausted him with play and exercise, it is very difficult, and sometimes painful. Thank you!!!!

I understand completely. I adopted at 6 months from the county shelter and my JackRat mix is a handful, especially if he's bored. Before I found Toms channel, I did some things wrong and these vids are really helping fix those, altho he's still a handful.

If I'm right the way he trains the dogs is stay is implied. You put the dog into sit and move away. If the dog follows you then you correct them into a sit and repeat. Stay is implied and removed with another command like heel or break.
Question: my dog is extremely socialized and currently getting better with public commands through self training. However, he recently (just hit 1 year old) started growling or barking at random people when they acknowledge or say hi to him, he hasnt been attacked by a person, but I am having trouble having him stop this because once he starts, a choke collar or prong collar cannot get him to ignore the person or stop the barking or the defensive behavior. The weirdest part is if I walk him through highly populated high foot traffic areas, such as downtown LA or Huntington dog beach and people dont acknowledge him, he doesnt mind walking right passed them without any issues, even grazing them while he walks by is no problem, its only when they try to say hi or say he is cute or pet him. any ideas?
A cry for help!! I have a 1yr old JackRat mix that I adopted at 6mths. Tom, your channel has helped so much. The problem I am having now is that if I am working in the yard and Jesse gets bored, he starts putting his paws on my back and/or nipping at me. There are no hip movements (he was fixed), but he really doesn't listen to me at this point. Standing up and trying to play with him only helps a little. He still wants to get behind me and nip at me. I don't know what to do except leash him up so he can't get at me. He calms down really quick at that point, but that's react not act. How do I deter that behavior from happening in the first place? BTW, I do try to pay attention to him and talk to him while gardening and his patience level varies, so I don't always know when this mood will strike him. Thanks to anyone who can help!
So basically... you pay people for doing nothing, and they will be content with doing nothing for something. A natural law that can be used for dogs and people 👌
I'm no professional, but I am a volunteer puppy raiser for a service dog school so I've had lots of puppies come through my house. The reason why your puppy is mouthing is because it's teeth are growing in which hurts. This behavior will lessen as it grows but it still shouldn't be tolerated. One way we reduce this behavior is by redirecting it. When your puppy bites you, remove it's mouth and instead offer it a toy. Same thing if the puppy is chewing a shoe or piece of furniture. Your puppy won't have a reason to bite or chew on these things if it realizes toys work just as good if not better. Another strategy is that instead of yelling or saying "Ow" when you get bitten, make a high pitched Yelp. This way your puppy understands that it hurt you and it will learn to be more gentle. This is speaking your puppy's language. There are a few other strategies but these are my favorite and most used. Bonus: One good toy to have with a mouthing puppy is a fleece braid (it doesn't have strings or stuffing like other soft toys which can hurt your puppy if ingested). They are even better if you get them damp and place them in the freezer. When you take them out it's like an icepack for the puppy's teeth.

No offense, but I really don't think you fully understand Pavlovian response positive food training. Dogs I've trained with food always respond to my commands if I don't have food available, once they've had enough practice and truly learned the behavior. They do the action and the reward is the marker word - not the food. The food enforces the marker word. When I tell my dog "right" or "yes", that tells the dog he has done what he was supposed to do, and he understands that a treat is probably on the way. But the dog is responding to the word, telling him he's done what I wanted, he's not responding to the food. If I don't have a treat for him, that's fine because I always have the word available to give as a reward. If I have a treat on hand, the dog gets the food reward only after getting the word reward. That way the word is still the reward for the trick. And the food is associated with the word, which maintains the long term value of the word over time to use as a training tool. When I tell my dog to sit, he will sit right where he is, even if I'm not by the dog's side. The food helps motivate the dog to learn the behavior, but once the behavior is learned, food is optional. Learning a behavior is hard work for a dog. Performing a behavior that has already been learned is not hard work and doesn't require payment, because it's easy. In fact, it's easier than easy. Easy implies that it's something the dog still has to work to achieve. Once the behavior is learned, the dog will perform the behavior subconsciously without even thinking about it. Think of it as paying your dog for the work of learning, so that you then get a lifetime of the dog performing the behavior free of cost. It's just like a pavlovian response to a dinner bell. Once you've trained your dog to have a pavlovian response to a dinner bell, when the bell rings, your dog will salivate. Your dog isn't making the conscious decision to salivate. Your dog isn't salivating because food is coming. Your dog is salivating because it has been conditioned to react to the bell the way it would react to food. It is an involuntary response to the learned input. The dog doesn't only salivate if there is food present. The dog has learned to associate the bell with food, so your dog has the same response to the bell as he would have to food, whether or not food is given along with the bell. The dog also receives dopamine, which is a pleasurable feeling, when it hears that bell. And this dopamine also becomes associated with your marker word, making the dog love to hear that word. Just like with the response to a dinner bell, once trained, your dog will have an involuntary response to your commands. When you say sit, your dog doesn't think about if it wants to sit, or what the benefit of sitting is. Sitting has become an involuntary reaction to the command. When you say sit, your dog sits without thinking about it. There is no thought or bargaining going on. Your dog just reacts in the way it's been trained to react. And when your dog follows your command, it feels good to your dog, because that is the way you've conditioned his brain, so he automatically receives his own dopamine reward when following your commands. Following the command becomes the reward. It's actually very similar to gambling addiction in humans. You start out by offering a reward when someone wins. But when someone continues to gamble, they start to associate that reward to the act of gambling. Eventually their brain will start feeding them dopamine every time they gamble, because sometimes when they gamble they get a reward, which gives you a dopamine rush. Eventually, gambling itself becomes the reward, and the person gambling doesn't even care if they win or not. They've become physically addicted to the act of gambling, and they don't even understand why they enjoy doing it so much. They just understand subconsciously that they will feel good when they gamble. So then even when a person logically knows that the game is rigged against them and they are guaranteed to lose if they play for long periods of time, they will keep playing and playing and playing, because that logic can't override the subconscious addiction. In the same way, the goal is to make your dog physically addicted to the act of following your commands. It's easier in dogs, because dogs don't have the logical capabilities of a human, so you don't have to overcome that logic. You just have to get the dog used to doing what it's told, and the addiction is created.
Wait, so the problem with that is not that is that hotdogs and cheese are loaded with salts and other things horrible for the health of anyone and specifically any dog?
You “give away” so much training techniques for free... that other pay so much for or have to work for. I appreciate what I learn here.

I don't do a lot of puppies but I'm wondering how you undo the swing, etc with an adult dog that was treat trained (only works for food). Thanks for all the knowledge share!
So far we use scrunchy sounds and positive reinforcement / lures to train our puppies.... mama does the rest.The treats they get are warm milk and puppy food. Also lots and lots of play time.

exactly, it's tough out there!
Using food at first to evoke the desired behaviour is a good way to teach the initial command. What most people forget is reduce the use of food and replace it with verbal praise once the dog understands the behaviour for my dog that rougly after 5 times, others may take longer. What I do as well is to use some of new the commands before we do some fun stuff such as going for a walk, play with the frisbee.... This way the dog will associate the command with fun. I do walk my dog off lease so she does need to do them also under ‘stress’. Passing bikes, ( barking) dogs, cars... that means practice it under these conditions a lot. A stronger reward is needed initially but again you need to reduce it. Now I can safe walk her without any food in most conditions. Only cats are tricky if I do not see the first so I can get her focus on me. She was scratchend by one when she was a puppy...
Thanks to these videos I finally have the relationship with my husky I always wanted :) unless i put a harness on, then she is working doing what husky does :p

I have just found your videos as I have just bought a 3 month GSP and after looking at many videos on dog training yours makes the most sense to me. I can see how many of the others would lead to bribing dogs. But I may inadvertently be doing something wrong. She sits when I give her dinner and I have started saying sit before I give her the dinner. I do like the fact she is not jumping up at me but do wonder if for that I should stop saying the sit command. Just wondering am I reinforcing if you sit you get food.

3:29 My big issue with using food only and too much is that they get used to it too much and later they do not work properly. Unless food. Met so many therapy dogs with this issue, they are not obedient, they learn haggling.

My friend got her dog as a puppy (Golden Retriever) and she didn't wash him since then (for about 12 months now). And I'm kind of getting concerned about the hygiene of the dog..

Tom did a video with break...the 1st time I understood how it was done. If a puppy I would teach sit, then toss a treat away and say break to get them up. For an older dog I use calm soft voice when teaching a command but let my voice get all squeaky with break..the voice tone told the dog when work ended.

Whoops! First video I’ve watched that I think you were putting out the wrong information on food rewards and how it’s done. Positive reinforcement with food is one of the best methods ever. I’ve been training since 1980 and have a successful business in fact a thriving business in the face of much competition in my area. The success of the positive reinforcement with food rewards and the marker word is undeniable. The engagement needed to do certain tasks with dogs is greatly enhanced by using food rewards in the correct manner.
I trained my dog with food and he does it without food.
I have a GSD puppy. He is almost 6 months old. What are your thoughts on using a prong collar with him? I am working with a private trainer so far we have used a pressure lead and star Mark collar. They have no effect on him now. He is very strong and pulls hard. My trainer is great but we are sometimes inconsistent. I also have a Doberman and Weimaraner who are benefitting from the prong collar.

Would it be best to take him for a walk to let out his energy? See if the whining subsidies when we return back to training? He's about to be 7 months.

Hi Tom, New to the channel. I've started using some of the techniques you talk about with my 12 year old GSD. My question regarding food reward; what should I use with my GSD who seems to not be food driven at all. She was and still is very responsive to the prong collar (pressure/release) and seems genuinely satisfied with a "good girl" or "good sit/heel/stay/etc." Or do I need to up my treat game and use something more appealing to her, i.e. hotdog's?
If she likes toys you can have a special and fun toy that she only gets to play with when training with you, there are some videos on that on youtube. Robert cabral (if I got his name right) has some vids on that. He can come across a bit harsh and direct sometimes but he's really good with dogs and knows his stuff
He said in this video that treats are NOT what the goal is. Positive responses like you are doing-- praise( good sit, etc) and physical acknowledgement at times( scratch on the head) is the goal. Sounds like your GS is behaving like one. They live to work! 😁

I know this is late, but, the answer is YES, if handled properly. Go to a trainer and it should be a success. We all know the saying, "even old dogs can learn new tricks." How do you think that saying came to be?
At what age do you recommend to start this training? My pup is 11 weeks, I started training but he has started to blatantly ignore me. Im wondering if I asking too much at such a young age.
Training classes should focus on phasing out the food rewards, too... Always having a big bag of food with you at all times is just not realistic. 'real life rewards' such as your voice, a touch, tug toy, ball, etc., are just as important.

My 12 week old GSD bites non-stop when handling or playing or simple training. What can I do, other than chew toys, to decrease the biting? I have children who want to play with him, but until I have exhausted him with play and exercise, it is very difficult, and sometimes painful.

I understand completely. I adopted at 6 months from the county shelter and my JackRat mix is a handful, especially if he's bored. Before I found Toms channel, I did some things wrong and these vids are really helping fix those, altho he's still a handful.

How do you train stay? I'm having trouble with stay
If I'm right the way he trains the dogs is stay is implied. You put the dog into sit and move away. If the dog follows you then you correct them into a sit and repeat. Stay is implied and removed with another command like heel or break.
Question: my dog is extremely socialized and currently getting better with public commands through self training. However, he recently (just hit 1 year old) started growling or barking at random people when they acknowledge or say hi to him, he hasnt been attacked by a person, but I am having trouble having him stop this because once he starts, a choke collar or prong collar cannot get him to ignore the person or stop the barking or the defensive behavior. The weirdest part is if I walk him through highly populated high foot traffic areas, such as downtown LA or Huntington dog beach and people dont acknowledge him, he doesnt mind walking right passed them without any issues, even grazing them while he walks by is no problem, its only when they try to say hi or say he is cute or pet him. any ideas?

A cry for help!! I have a 1yr old JackRat mix that I adopted at 6mths. Tom, your channel has helped so much. The problem I am having now is that if I am working in the yard and Jesse gets bored, he starts putting his paws on my back and/or nipping at me. There are no hip movements (he was fixed), but he really doesn't listen to me at this point. Standing up and trying to play with him only helps a little. He still wants to get behind me and nip at me. I don't know what to do except leash him up so he can't get at me. He calms down really quick at that point, but that's react not act. How do I deter that behavior from happening in the first place?
BTW, I do try to pay attention to him and talk to him while gardening and his patience level varies, so I don't always know when this mood will strike him. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Puppy biting suggestions? Nothing is slowing or stopping my German Shepherd puppys biting.
I'm no professional, but I am a volunteer puppy raiser for a service dog school so I've had lots of puppies come through my house. The reason why your puppy is mouthing is because it's teeth are growing in which hurts. This behavior will lessen as it grows but it still shouldn't be tolerated.
One way we reduce this behavior is by redirecting it. When your puppy bites you, remove it's mouth and instead offer it a toy. Same thing if the puppy is chewing a shoe or piece of furniture. Your puppy won't have a reason to bite or chew on these things if it realizes toys work just as good if not better. Another strategy is that instead of yelling or saying "Ow" when you get bitten, make a high pitched Yelp. This way your puppy understands that it hurt you and it will learn to be more gentle. This is speaking your puppy's language. There are a few other strategies but these are my favorite and most used.
Bonus: One good toy to have with a mouthing puppy is a fleece braid (it doesn't have strings or stuffing like other soft toys which can hurt your puppy if ingested). They are even better if you get them damp and place them in the freezer. When you take them out it's like an icepack for the puppy's teeth.

No offense, but I really don't think you fully understand Pavlovian response positive food training. Dogs I've trained with food always respond to my commands if I don't have food available, once they've had enough practice and truly learned the behavior. They do the action and the reward is the marker word - not the food. The food enforces the marker word. When I tell my dog "right" or "yes", that tells the dog he has done what he was supposed to do, and he understands that a treat is probably on the way. But the dog is responding to the word, telling him he's done what I wanted, he's not responding to the food. If I don't have a treat for him, that's fine because I always have the word available to give as a reward. If I have a treat on hand, the dog gets the food reward only after getting the word reward. That way the word is still the reward for the trick. And the food is associated with the word, which maintains the long term value of the word over time to use as a training tool.
When I tell my dog to sit, he will sit right where he is, even if I'm not by the dog's side. The food helps motivate the dog to learn the behavior, but once the behavior is learned, food is optional. Learning a behavior is hard work for a dog. Performing a behavior that has already been learned is not hard work and doesn't require payment, because it's easy. In fact, it's easier than easy. Easy implies that it's something the dog still has to work to achieve. Once the behavior is learned, the dog will perform the behavior subconsciously without even thinking about it. Think of it as paying your dog for the work of learning, so that you then get a lifetime of the dog performing the behavior free of cost.
It's just like a pavlovian response to a dinner bell. Once you've trained your dog to have a pavlovian response to a dinner bell, when the bell rings, your dog will salivate. Your dog isn't making the conscious decision to salivate. Your dog isn't salivating because food is coming. Your dog is salivating because it has been conditioned to react to the bell the way it would react to food. It is an involuntary response to the learned input. The dog doesn't only salivate if there is food present. The dog has learned to associate the bell with food, so your dog has the same response to the bell as he would have to food, whether or not food is given along with the bell. The dog also receives dopamine, which is a pleasurable feeling, when it hears that bell. And this dopamine also becomes associated with your marker word, making the dog love to hear that word.
Just like with the response to a dinner bell, once trained, your dog will have an involuntary response to your commands. When you say sit, your dog doesn't think about if it wants to sit, or what the benefit of sitting is. Sitting has become an involuntary reaction to the command. When you say sit, your dog sits without thinking about it. There is no thought or bargaining going on. Your dog just reacts in the way it's been trained to react. And when your dog follows your command, it feels good to your dog, because that is the way you've conditioned his brain, so he automatically receives his own dopamine reward when following your commands. Following the command becomes the reward.
It's actually very similar to gambling addiction in humans. You start out by offering a reward when someone wins. But when someone continues to gamble, they start to associate that reward to the act of gambling. Eventually their brain will start feeding them dopamine every time they gamble, because sometimes when they gamble they get a reward, which gives you a dopamine rush. Eventually, gambling itself becomes the reward, and the person gambling doesn't even care if they win or not. They've become physically addicted to the act of gambling, and they don't even understand why they enjoy doing it so much. They just understand subconsciously that they will feel good when they gamble. So then even when a person logically knows that the game is rigged against them and they are guaranteed to lose if they play for long periods of time, they will keep playing and playing and playing, because that logic can't override the subconscious addiction.
In the same way, the goal is to make your dog physically addicted to the act of following your commands. It's easier in dogs, because dogs don't have the logical capabilities of a human, so you don't have to overcome that logic. You just have to get the dog used to doing what it's told, and the addiction is created.
Wait, so the problem with that is not that is that hotdogs and cheese are loaded with salts and other things horrible for the health of anyone and specifically any dog?
But puppies don't know the meaning of good or bad at this stage.
