Can’t thank you enough- I really jumped the gun with our rehomed GSD. She initially recalled, I realize now, cuz I was the only trusted anything in her life. After like 5 months she just blew me off for other people and dogs. I’ve started over with great success because of your videos- YOU are a master teacher. Thank you soooo much!
Same, my adoptee was very diligent, then got comfortable and we moved to the country where deer happened. Comforting to know starting over worked for you
I feel like Tom is the only trainer out there who also works with hounds. Lots of other people just have their highly trainable shepherds and malinois and border collies and labradors... While those may have their own challenges, they are all bred to work together with humans, while a hound is bred to work independently from the human, preferably even when kilometres away.
been training this to my new adopted chihuahua mix. One day when someone was knocking on my neighbors door and I opened it, he ran outside the door - the recall worked like a charm! I think recall is essential for any dog owner.
I have taught my 12month Cane Corso how to come with very similar tactics but I’ve also taught her to do a ‘flyby’ where she has to just stop what’s she’s doing and catch up. She absolutely loves that command because she knows she’s still on a break and not having to be under strict rules again
You can combine this with another drill I just learned from Sonja Nordstrom..when the dog gets close, take your non treat hand and grasp their collar, or “receive” the collar as they come close..then reward. This trains them to never fear the handler reaching for the collar, or running away/avoiding the reach for the collar..
Ok... I have a GSD that i got when he was 1 years old, and he did well for a bit, but as soon as he sees dogs, ppl, squirrels, cats etc, he forgets all about me. He has even had on shock collars that he would blow off. So now, this video is my only hope. I will keep you informed of our progress.
Incredible video! I wish I lived near you, or even in the same country. I would love to have you work with my husband and I. Our dog is smart, she can do it, we're the reason she misbehaves sometimes.
The following through portion is so important. That was the one thing that I wasn’t doing when I taught my dog recall. He would come to me all excited, get his reward, then leave my side. I’m definitely going to keep up with the follow through! Thanks for the tip 😄
Loved seeing you work with a hound, you give the hound owners like myself hope. My Beagle is a social butterfly and my Brittany/Beagle is scared of everything. We are training and this video was a great help. Thank you.
Tom, HUGE thank you from me and my 3 older and new Malinois pup! Your videos have helped me to start the correct way with my puppy and have helped me to address all my flaws as handler with my older dogs. The way you transfer your knowledge to us, the audience, is great! Thank you! As we say in Costa Rica: PURA VIDA!!!!
This couldn’t come at a better time!! I’ve been at a bit of a loss on teaching our Bernese recall after a recent incident! Will be working on this!! Thanks
Great job Smokey! Thank you for this video, Tom. It's so important to take this step by step, and to not be afraid to go back a step (or two) if you're not getting the results you require from your dog. I took my inlaw's GSD to dog training (sadly my landlord does not allow pets...) and in class we were always told a 'full recall' ends with touching the collar, so you can click the lead back on. Keesha was a beautiful dog, and her recall was solid because we took our time to learn it.
Great training! I needed this. I love how she was running to you, "I'm coming " , haha very cute. My little Hound types, like that one, get on a smell and I feel if they were ever off leash, well, I would have to kiss them goodbye. But I would like to get them better at a recall. Great video.
Thank you so much for truly walking us through the entire process step by step! I have been looking for a video like this. Most videos tell you what to train, but doesn't break down how to do that training! So appreciated
This is absolutely perfect. I had a training today and talked about these same points. Thanks Tom you are awesome and my clients love your videos I share. 🐾🐶❤️
Wow this was an AWESOME vid! I have a tree walker coonhound + Boxer mix and when I tell you his nose is to the ground he doesn’t even know I exist! We live in an area with LOTS of wild life and he (Whiskey) is always trying to find something or chase the turkeys, rabbits, birds…everything…cant blame the dog its in his breed. Ive found that a good walk where he can just sniff and do his thing he listens sooo much better after that. Is that a thing? Anyway, The single pop of the collar has been pure gold. He’s listening so much better! Thank you for using a breed that could be distracted / high prey drive !!!🫶🏼 going to try phase 2 soon! I also bought a E-collar and will watch your other vid! Thanx again ❤
Thanks Tom!! These last couple videos are just what I needed for me and my two girls Navey (pit/Australian shepherd mix) and Millie (husky/Belgian malanois mix)
Awesome video I'm still working on it with my doggie he is a dashund shepherd mix and it's like if he sees a squirrel or strange cat and of course a dog he's going crazy but I'm not gonna give up I make sure he knows he is doing wrong with correction kinda hard sometimes he's a 50 lb dog and I don't want to go skiing lol
Amazing video Tom, love how you defined levels and demonstrating timing along with all the steps depending on the dogs response to your cues!! 🥳 One thing I had heard somewhere was that you want to avoid using obedience immediately when the dog gets to you while training recall because you want to make it very rewarding for them to get to you ASAP. I see you putting the dog into a sit, are you using that as the completion of the recall like they come to you and sit all when you say ? I'm gathering the sit helps the dog understand they are to come and not leave until released though. I love so many things about how you explained and put this video together. The progression explanations were great!
Just started watching your videos. Hoping they help me with my very reactive boxer. We have made some improvements with some other training but still having some struggles and have a lot of work left still. Thank you for sharing these videos with us.
This was great information! We have been working so hard on all sorts of training with our boy. He has improved so much but our current battle is escaping. He listens so well on leash but has gotten out a few times and does not want to listen then. These are scary situations for us but hopefully with this knowledge we can work to strengthen the relationship between us and him so we don't run into this issue anymore!
Definitely my favourite dog trainer. Not only trying to learn technique from you but bearing and character too. You do remind me a bit of the rapper in Trailer Park Boys, though but I reckon that’s a good thing. 😀
Love that colorway of you Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTXs (barely grape). Don't have the black and blue colorway. Those are such a perfect dog training shoes! You can just hose them off when you're finished oh, no problem. But that colorway you have is banging!
I need this vid! Our Bluetick knows the command, but won’t recall unless I tug the line and he knows there’s treats involved. And even then, it’s at his leisure. Looks like we need to go back to the beginning.
Great teaching, beautiful dog! Would love to see you work with a sighthound sometime🙏 (I just ordered your Dogtra collar and have high hopes now for my rescue galgo!)
Tom, you're truly amazing... I watch all your videos since I recently purchased a new puppy. She has been thru 4 weeks of basic training. She's doing very well but putting on her collars she is so excited it's always a wrestling match. She's not food motivated. Any tips or videos related to this problem? Thank you so much, Rick.
I had similar issue with my dog. I made her 'sit' for collar now. If she didn't maintain sit then I drop collar and take shoes and coat off. Start over few minutes later. She learnt pretty quick to maintain her sit cause she loves going for walk.
I would say ASAP..all dogs are different..some are treat driven, praise, or toy. I use treats at the beginning stages. And "maybe" a new command. Good to finally be able to just reward w praise when they get older. Remember to get excited when praising. But don't praise too long. 2 to 3 seconds...now if it's a harder task your asking them with more distractions you could praise them just a tad bit more.. You can always go back to treats if the praise isn't reward enough for them. Just my 2 cents.
Hahahaha just watching your video and when you said come my dog looked at me🤣 My dogs recall needs a lot of improvement but I guess this look means its getting better haha. When I say come I grad my dog collar before giving the treat so I can grab him if necessary..
Dang Tom 10months in with Goose out Brittany were here now. I am working with him now. He’s darting because he believes everyone wants to see him. I’ll start slower… level 1 ❤
Had some pancake issue, after we thought he was capturing the recall on nic at#5. Never had to use line at all. There were no close distractions. Submitted question to Live coming up. Worried about abrupt shutdown, and what we may have done wrong 😢.
Good video for owners to see recall in the presence of more competing motivators. I liked the fact that you brought up the use of negative punishment when she jumped up on you after the one of the recalls. You used negative pubishment to "correct" for the target behavior that you were looking for. I also think it might be helpful to add that you're using negative reinforcement to "correct" her when she doesnt come with the use of the leash pop. Not many people understand the use of aversives when it comes to negative reinforcement. It might be a helpful addition for some people/owners moving forward.
Corrections are positive punishment not negative reinforcement. Though I agree that it would be great if Tom did a video explaining operant conditioning in dog training. There are some amazing videos on UA-cam of Michael Ellis explaining the different terms and techniques in dog training
@@mariaalyakrinskaya5412 it's only positive punishment if he was trying to stop a behavior from occuring. He's using an aversive to encourage a behavior to occur. Isn't it both? Positive punishment (which implies the addiction of a negative stimulus, the pop) when she doesn't come, and negative reinforcement once she commits and the stimulus is removed
@@elena1904 It's negative reinforcement. Escape and avoidance learning are aspects of negative reinforcement and that's what you're seeing in real time with the "corrections" given after noncompliance of the recall.

Smokey did so good. Also do you know what type of breed she is? Or if she is a full breed? She definitely has some traits I would like in my next dog. Also I train my dogs throughly so the hound nose wouldn’t be a problem for me since I would work on it from day one.

Welcome, Kaja! That's why we do what we do!
I'm at that 5 month stage now. My dog is 6 months and all over the place at the moment.
So this video came right when I needed to hear this again 😄
The dog waiting in the middle of a field in a sit made me laugh lol.
lol

So guilty of training one of our dogs to return and she pops away every time. She’s 5 - I’m revisiting my training method immediately. Thanks, Tom!
Hope this helps!
Smokey is so adorable 😍 💙

Hey Tom, what’s your thoughts on LIMA training?
When you talk about accountability and repercussions: odds that ok to start with a 5 month old? We have a ridgeback and he blows us off all the time.
I bite off more than I can chew. You know every senerio. Amazing
So do you cue the sit and then reward? Or wait till he sits without telling the sit cue ?
