1970 Subaru 360: A Toy Van For The Street

- It’s not a shrunken Type 2 VW, but rather an adorable little import built in Japan in an era long before Subaru started to earn its modern granola-crunching and power-sliding fanbase. Sun-soaked Arizona is an altogether alien terrain if you’re arriving from Japan, and as far as U.S. cities go, Greater Phoenix is not wanting for space-certainly not when compared to the tightly-packed streets of Japan’s metropolitan hubs-and a tiny van with an even smaller motor is no way to experience these wide-open desert highways if your version of the American Southwest requires a V8. But traversing the ramps and right angles around the city? This little UFO is quite handy indeed. The Subaru 360 Van is an efficient use of of space and it gets the kind of excellent mileage you’d expect from a barebones and mostly utilitarian machine, and yet its value lies more in its charm than its function.

More of these please. There's enough exposure for your every day Porsche 356, but videos on weird stuff like this is what youtube sorely lacks.
I had one of these in 1971 when I was 16. Lived in Santa Clara California. Drove it up Highway 9 every weekend to go camping at the beach. Believe it or not my girlfriend and I did sleep in the back. A baby crib mattress fit perfect in the back. We both slept on that together. Awe young love LOL!!!
These are the type of Petro vids I like the most :)
Bradley Greenwood I agree, much more interesting than a video about a rich guy buying a new car.
Yeah definitely, I love the Nissan pao one
Put a massive smile on my face, what a lovely automobile :)
1:05 that bmw looks like a predator approaching its prey.
Van : *smiling* *whistling*
BMW: " IMA GET YO ASSS BIAAAAAATTCCHH "
DivineRift lol; like a great white shark approaching!!
Your comment made my night. It seriously does look that way. Cue the Jaws theme music
G Michael Leonard I'd rather be in thw BMW then that $1.60 clown car.
G Michael Leonard Also I love Japanese cars. This stuff however cool it might be is Unsafe.
Prefer videos about quirky vehicles like this over race cars anyday and was relieved that he didn't use the word "passion" once.
Videos like this are better than wathcing one with a Ferrari in my view.
South Hill Farm no way
yes!
May be it's because we get used to all these luxury sports cars. I don't think they are not interesting, but simply there are too much of them
I really want one of these to take my kids to school and the beach or run local errands...
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!! Oh man......how this makes me smile. The weirder the better, and the jazz that starts it off. Absolute perfection for this dude.
Unique and whimsical.
Really enjoyed the cinematography in this video. Also who ever does the titles for your thumbnails is fantastic! Each one is so well designed for the topic of the video.
I enjoy watching this kinds of videos, the ones with neatly kept, one of a kind utilitarian rides!
He's not the only who loves these two stroke vans, there's a guy up in Portland, OR., who has a UA-cam channel - 2stroketurbo, he's mechanic with his own shop and he posts video all the time, He rebuilt one of these vans, a windowless junker to a daily driver, great videos.
As a lover of modern architecture, this video was a feast. The backdrop of modernist/brutalist buildings really enhanced the subject van. Made perfect sense--urban car, urban setting--but stylishly so. Brilliantly done (as usual).
The *original* sound of Subaru... _Ring ding ding ding ding!_
Brodie Bennett you people know a lot about subaru right? Ding ding dong dong
Luke Skywalker Actually I know very little.
What I do know however is that their first car was the 360, and from what I can remember it has a little air cooled, 2-stroke engine - hence the ringa dinga ding dong sound effects *;)*
It was only in the later years when Boxer engines became the norm with their different length headers that the car gained it's classic well known deep grumble. Sounds good.
Brodie Bennett hahahaha I was just impersonating trump😂
But yes, subaru's first car was 360(san-roku-maru) which theoratically could fit four adults in the car.
I guess it depends on the size of the adults ;-)
Michael Westen well, average adult in japan in 1960s
I proudly own a restored 1970 Subaru 360. I also have a 1972 Suzuki L40 Carry pickup which is lifted on "big" 22" tires! Both street legal and registered here in SoCal.
The world's most innocent car
Robert Rowley Tell THAT to all the 2 stroke hating environazis.
Rivals the miata
I thought that dude was big or something at first, but holy shit that thing is smaller than a Volkswagen Beetle!
The beetle isn't really small though, I'd say the Sanbar (the 360 van here), is the size of a Fiat 600 probably.
We need more videos of this guy with all his other Subaru gems!! Please!!
Moving up the mirrors like that really looks good on that car :)
This thing reminds me of the vehicle Mr. Incredible uses... LOL I couldn't stop laughing viewing the vid! Good one Petrolicious!!!
Now that's a true "Mini van"!
The 360 van was my mom's only car for a couple of years back in the early 70s, dad's was the little 360 car, they are both in my family's home movies of us going places in the '70s.
That thing is sick. I want 12 of them asap. Lol
The cinematography, the music, the car. PERFECTION.
This car made me smile
Scott, thank you for preserving a car most people probably wouldn't consider worth looking at.
That's what a favorite car usually looks like. Noisy, hard to steer yet unique and ultimately charming
This was great. I bet you could fit a lot of clowns in this 360. Thanks for posting this lesser seen vehicle.
Darn you Petrolicious... I was hoping my dream van would remain secret for at least another 5 years! Thanks for the price hike :P haha
What a magnificent little machine!
My younger brother had one of these. What a riot to drive ! To drive it to it's maximum ability you had to be very coordinated. 360 CC's had to be used very efficiently to not hold up traffic. I remember the shifter flexing as I shifted. It was a complicated dance, but then the Best always are .
Wow! Fantastic segment, downtown Phoenix looks great!
Saw some of these in my trip to Japan. Love classic Japanese cars.
This is so cute!!! I do not know how large a motorcycle engine it could fit, but thinking a 1000cc one would be hilarious fear and fun!!
This video really made me smile. A super sweet vehicle, an in love owner, and a rare example of music in an automotive or motorcycle video in which the music made it way better. Cheers.
I HAD TWO OF THE SUBARU 360 VANS AND TWO OF THE SEDANS .
I LOVED DRIVING THEM AND NEVER THOUGHT THEY WERE TOO LOUD OR SCARY .
...a most stylish and attractive little van, and snazzy music to match...i loved the video...thanks...
What an eloquent piece of art that serves both functionality and emotion! Would absolutely love one for road tripping!
Thanks as always Petrolicious!!!!!!! My favorite channel!!!!!
I first thought it was an VW Van. Wow I'm in love for sure.
Using my wife's name with pic. Hi Scott thought that looked familiar, especially since are vans paint jobs are almost identical. The van I own was purchased from Ed, the Guru of Subaru's. He and his wife owned it for 40 years and was his daily driver.
This is the third van I've owned since my dad gave me my first 360 sedan back about 1980. I love driving it. Only time I got intimidated in it driving on the freeway for 55 miles from Lancaster, CA to Santa Clarita on Christmas day. Slowest speed was 45 and fastest was 70mph thanks to a sedan rear end.
Mark
My uncle has one. I get it when he dies. I got to drive it when I was 16, only once. 12 years later and I still remember that teeny machine.
What a lovely automobile! Love the two stroke motor :-)
Simply petrolicious!
I love the micro cars. The owners are a different breed altogether and are happy to divulge the shortcomings of their chosen one.
Currently sitting in my (dad's) garage right now is a 1980 Subaru Brat and a 1970 Subaru 360! You and my old man are like the exact same person! You both have the same love for vintage Subarus! How crazy is that!?
One of the many perks of growing up in LA in the 60s-70s was the cornucopia of automobilia. 2 stroke 'Soobs' were not common but not unheard, or smelled, of.
日本でもなかなか見ないのにアメリカで愛されてるなんて感激です😄
これからも乗り続けて下さいね😃
Thank you Scott. Never knew these existed. Beautiful little van... After the VW... Subaru!
You guys did a very nice job choosing the music to complement the person and the car. Great video once again and thanks for sharing
Had a 69 model. Loved it. Bummer was parts were hard to find. Tires too. Sold a few years back. I miss it alot. It's how I taught myself to drive a stick. Glad they're around still. Got mine in .ca. Sold it in tx.
To think that the Subaru 360 Buggy and Van were even smaller than the Volkswagen Beetle is quite mind-blowing. Subaru did have some very humble beginnings
Met the gentt at the Scottsdale Pavilions car show, very genuine car guy.
Fantastic! A car from another time.
Driving was necessary then, today it is just simple transportation.
Love how it has racing stripes ! That's what you call commitment :D
This van is so tiny and cute that make me want to pet it
This is on my bucket list to collect. Gorgeous.
Scott is at the Scottsdale Pavilions McDonalds Hotrod car show almost every weekend here in AZ I def recommend checking it out! Sometimes he brings that cool BRAT too!
I would love to see one of these with a suzuki gsxr motor in it, made into a camper van!!!
Thats one cute little Subi!
Would love to see his other Subaru cars.
How can you not smile looking at this?
Yes! More affordable classics!
I love your storytelling.
What a nice little Subaru 😎👍
One of these just came up for sale,(in Project-condition so cheap), in my area.
Never even knew of them so wanted to look on here to check them out..Pretty Cool!
Cool and quirky car in what looks to be the perfect environment to preserve it.
Great vid, Petrolicious.
Very good video! I love the music choice!
Great vehicle, shame the owner doesn't really have anything to say about it. "It looks interesting" - ok. I don't know how you find these people, but if you came to me, I could gush about the reasons Subaru's 360 is crucial in the history of the Japanese automobile. About its superb engineering, about how it broke away from imitation and copy-cat designs that were the norm in Japan during the 1950s. About the crazy story of how it came to the U.S. (I've spoken to Harvey about Malcolm, and I've corresponded with the owners of the docks where Subaru 360s were unloaded). About Ed Parsil and the Subaru 360 Driver's Club, and on and on. And this guy has basically nothing to say. Nice.

Fantastic
Dr. Doom in a toy
They copied the VW almost to the T. The sedan is a direct copy of the bug, the van is a copy of the combi and the truck is a copy of the single cab. They still to date copy vw designs, what you talking about?
You think most people care about you going on about the history of the vehicle for a hour or do they just want to see the vehicle?
You don't want to go all Asperger's in this sort of video (no offense, I historically exhibit some on those tendencies myself, mainly the unwitting anorakish enthusiasm and verbosity over minutiae). The video is short and is mainly meant to convey the owners' enthusiasm. Perhaps you haven't seen many Petrolicious videos, this is typical.
Your comment is astonishingly ignorant. The 360 uses an inline twin, 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine. The VW horizontally opposed, four cylinder, four stroke. The 360's engine was inspired by the 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine used in the Lloyd LP 300, it has no technological link to the VW powerplant at all. The 360 made use of aluminum and fiberglass to reduce weight. The doors in the initial models used sliding glass so the interior of the door could be used for storage space - as in a Renault 4cv, or a British Mini - unlike in the VW. The 360, from an engineering standpoint is rather impressive for how cleverly the design reduces weight and maximizes interior space, using many of the same tricks that would be used later in the British Mini (10" wheels, transverse mounted engine, and so on) but is never given due credit. Calling it a copy of the VW is just stupid.
I know the videos are supposed to be romantic rather than technical, but this guy doesn't seem to really care.
Beautiful, thought it was a VW van at first glance. Old cars sure had character.
The suggested list after watching this video is brilliant!
First time I've seen the streets of Phoenix, really beautiful city.
Scary to drive or scary for everyone around him as he doesn’t indicate?
Driving something so tiny you'd think he'd be extra cautious in making sure everyone knows what he's about to do. The indicators definitely are there, did they not work at the time of filming, or...?
rekt and he ran the light at 1:37
Will Plu he IS the big man in a tiny car with road rage you're looking for.
Red face, red eyes.... Yeah.
Fog No one uses directionals anymore. At least in NC. That's how they spot the Yankees.
+gwynn romano You are so right, New England Yankee, I was going to ask why they are complaining if that's how everyone drives. lol
*Kamera,Ton und Schnitt hervorragend! Danke.Bangkok-Johnny CarSanook Media THAILAND 🇹🇭*
Two strokes rock but the great sound is covered over with jazz music.
I most like Pretolicious videos that make me smile. This is obviously one of them. :)
Such a lovely, cute, charming little car. Wow.
I got tagged on instagram on a screenshot of this videos thumbnail back in march. Good to finally see what the video is
A single rotor engine with a turbo would be a great fit for this little bugger. A kit without having to do any cutting or welding would be cool.
I just love the filmography in every video you guys put out and I love this car , reminds of the oldschool vw kombi but smaller
He doesn't drive it...he wears it!
Petrolicious came to my back yard, and I wasn't there. Hope you guys liked Phoenix, it's nice this time of year.
I want the STI version .
That made my day❤️..other car is a brat.. This guy is winning.
There was a time in America you could buy these brand new from dealerships and people didn't, very hard for me to wrap my head around that concept.
Gorgeous condition. Absolutely love it
That's a cute little van.
他の車と並ぶと、やっぱり小さい(*^_^*)
大事に乗っていらっしゃる様子で、ピカピカなのが分かります。
街並みに赤が映えて、お洒落ですね。
What a cute little thingy. And totally appropriate for a guy who's probably something like 6'4''.
Instant big smile w first shot of him driving it.
I really like the sound at idle. Sounds like a little race car ready to take on the grocery store
First thing I thought of was 2stroketurbo, he's got a couple of Subaru Vans and a couple of 360 coupes. A DKW 3=6 or two as well.
Those little cars will do the job.
Amazing cinematography!
Love microcars... thanks for sharing!
Wow, you actually made Phoenix look interesting and nice. Kudos. Sweet van.
He seemed like a happy fella!
This is the hero we need
Fantastic car! Wooow! Beautiful video. Take care for this beautiful small car. So happy to see this video! Well done dude! :)
All the best to you Scott! You have a lovely van n it looks like you deserve it too😊
Would have been so cool to have one when they first came out. Very cute and simple
This type of vdo is the one which makes Petrolicious so unique,
No sabía que había una furgoneta del Subaru 360. Preciosa!!!
Love these KEI cars. To many generously built Americans they look like enclosed go-carts
