I had been trying to adapt this scheme for my Tyranids for 40K since the first video. Now with the Kroxigor having plates similar to the nids’ I have a perfect example to work off of! You’re the goat.
These are awesome but these are pretty much the only models I see painted up as Starborne. I'd love to see others like Slaan or some big monsters painted up this way.
Holy moly this is incredible!!! Before all the highlights it looked great but those elevated the model to “Named boss” level! I think I want to try this on a troglodon model as a super powerful skink oracle summoned it to battle
I have a Carnosaur in the pile of shame... might have to dust that off! I've been trying to think of a similar, but different kind of Starborne scheme for it. Maybe i'll switch out the blue for something different.
I feel like the white line recess shade in the scales would be a good place for white oil paint depending on how much of it you intend to do, also if your already busting out the oils the black lining is another good spot for that.
good idea, it might be worth trying! Oil paint tends to flow quite a bit, so you'd probably end up getting a much larger area of glow if you're not too careful. Please let me know if you try it out and what kind of results you get. Thanks for watching!
Amazing video as always! Helps get me through my week and inspires me to want to slay my pile of grey. Two video suggestions, 1) Star Borne mounts video and 2) white fur skaven please and thank you!
I bet the scheme would look really cool on Necrons. Great idea! I think you could do a similar glow in between the armor panels. I think the glow shows up better on darker surfaces, so a very dark, almost black steel would probably be the most effective. Make sure to share on Instagram or Discord if you try it out, I'd love to see the results. Good luck!
I would be interested to see how you would paint lizards using brown as a main color. I'm fast becoming fascinated with brown and different shades of it. It seems tricky to use browns in ways that are interesting, but I've seen it done and I'd like to learn. Great video! Hoping for you to do more lizards!
Glad to have you here! I do have a couple Skaven videos on the channel as well. But I'd highly recommend adding some Seraphon to your collection! ;) thanks for watching!
Another brilliant video, I have finished my 4th Saurus warrior using your previous video, 1st one wasn’t amazing, but the ones following are looking really great, I’ll 100% be coming back to this video when I start my Kroxigors, thanks Matt!
I might just have to! I have two more Kroxigor models, just need to decide on how to paint them. I'll put one vote into the "standard" category. Thanks for watching!
@@MattsHobbyHour I'd be insanely grateful if you did! Been trying to find a good tutorial on how to paint the Kroxigors that resembles the boxart, but they seem impossible to find, which feels odd, compared to how many people I see on different forums and fb-groups looking for it :D Regardless, keep up the amazing work, your videos are too good to give a miss, even when watching tutorials on models I dont even own :D
Thank you so much for making this video it's the exact aesthetic I'm looking for! You mentioned you could substitute airbrushing with a spraycan of white paint, do you have any recommendations for what brand/type would be best to use? I'm pretty new to painting and don't own an airbrush so I'm not really sure what would work best for that step
Thanks! I'm glad the video is helpful. If you are in the US, I would recommend ACE Hardware white primer (same kind as the grey primer I use). Good luck!
@@MattsHobbyHour Thanks a bunch! By the, I know in your original video for army painting you dry brushed white onto the grey primer, is there a reason you use a different method for the larger models like this?
@@Karzakus Couple reasons, mostly because the airbrush tends to be smoother/higher quality, and because this guide has some edge highlights after the initial washes. I went with drybrushing for the first guide because it's more in line with army/speed painting. Also I like showing a variety of different techniques on the channel, so there's hopefully something for everyone.
I love this color scheme and your detailed video! It made me pick up Seraphon as my first AoS army. Do you have any tips on how you’d work this paint scheme for a Carnosaur?
Thanks for watching! I'm really glad you liked it enough to pick up an army! I'd recommend checking out this Saurus video I made a while back. ua-cam.com/video/p1E0XkQjgw8/v-deo.html it's a simpler version of the same color scheme, and it involves some drybrushing. That's what I'd recommend for a larger model like a Carnosaur. Hope this helps, and good luck!
Very cool. I like this color gradient from light to dark blue. This scaly body really reminds me of your Tyranids in the Kraken color scheme. Btw, I think it would be cool if you made some more of these in the Hive Fleet Kraken color scheme. I would especially like to see a fierce Deathleaper in that Kraken scheme, but also older models like the Maleceptor, Winged Hive Tyrant, or Tyrannofex. Well, I could try them myself to see them, but I think it would be cooler to see them here with you first.😂 Besides these, I would also like to see how you would design a Kroot Lone-Spear or some Krootox Rampagers.
Dude! this looks so good! I have 15 Kroxigar to paint, and a lot of saurus (30 warriors, 7 aggrodons, 2 carnosaurs, 15 guard) I'm tempted to paint with this method (but more green) but idk if i should take the time when I have 4k points worth of soul blight chaff (my main army) to paint...
this scheme does take a little time! I have another Starborne guide which is a bit simpler, and utilizes some drybrushing. Might want to give that a shot if its for a big army. Good luck and thanks for watching!
i think those colors could work out. Which colors would you swap for which? I think that in order for the glow to show up well, the scale color should be dark. So whichever route you go for that, I'd make sure it is dark. If you go with green for the scales, I'd use a blue-green rather than a yellow-green. A dark blue-green, like Stegadon Scale Green would work well for the skin, and I think that would pair really well with a reddish purple.
The scheme and effects look amazing, but I am cracking up that some of the recessed areas got apothecary white, then apothecary white + ultramarines blue, then ultramarines blue, then black lotus, then back to white for the glow effect
That's what's cool about this kind of paint - the layers are very thin and the more you apply, the more depth you get. Seems like it might be a lot but the end result doesn't seem too thick to me! Thanks for watching!
@ Yay looking forward to it!!! I’ve had a few seraphon in my grey pile of shame I’ve been meaning to get to. You did help with my Hive Fleet Tiamet army. Your video was super helpful 👍
That's a good question! I'm not well versed in their lore, so I dont know if there might be any info in there. Maybe another glowing kind of color, purple or red? Got any ideas?
Why do you first paint the scales with Apothecary white + Ultramarine, when doing all over it again with Ultramarines later? The Result looks absolutly amazing, and I am going to get Apothecary White tomorrow :D
It's all about building depth, starting with lighter colors and working darker. Contrast can work well in a "one coat and done" kind of method too, but I think building up the depth gives much better results. Glad you like the video! Thanks for watching and good luck with your models!
Hi! I'm sorry you're having trouble with blending. I'm going to share my answer from another comment here for you: "There are a lot of variables at play and it's hard to narrow it down without being in person. I think it's one of two things: speed or not enough paint on the model. My blending in the video is in real-time without cuts, so if your painting is slower than the video, that may be the problem. The other possibility is that you're not using enough paint. Really thin layers will dry so quickly you wont be able to blend them. I would try to match the amount of paint that I'm applying to the model, and also be aware of how you apply it. When I lay down the paint, I tend to end my brush stroke in the area that's about to be blended - that way the paint in that spot is freshest and I'll have the most time to finish the blend. I hope this helps you out. Feel free to join my Discord server and share some photos of your progress. It may be easier to help you that way. Good luck!"

No matter how much I try, my attempts at contrast blending would result in coffee stains. I even used 2 separate brushes in hopes that it would reduce the time the contrast had to dry. Is there something I am missing?
