Up there with the best results I've seen from contrast speed painting, and very well explained. Great video.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Just started my own Seraphon army and will definately be using some of these techniques. Thanks for this and brilliant artwork!
Awesome! I'm glad its been helpful to you. Good luck with your new army!
I'd really like to see more of the high-impact, low-effort techniques like the gemstone you demonstrated in this video. Great work!
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll be sure to include more of those in the future
This is by far, one of the best paint hacks I've ever seen. You could later add further highlights too. Nice work man. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Yep you could absolutely highlight more. Happy painting!
Retributor armor is nice, but I think Vallejo's "Glorious Gold" is the best gold paint out there!
That's a very nice gold too! Hard to choose. Thanks for watching!
@@MattsHobbyHour Excellent work on this mini, by the way! :D I think it's great that we have so many good choices of paint out there.
Damn that looks good!
Thanks!
I really like your works…can you di skaven or tzeentch mortal?
Great suggestions, thank you!
I don't think I've ever seen contrast paint look that good. Wow
Thanks for watching!
Nice colour scheme looks quite natural, and not immediately contrast painted. Well done. 😊👍
Thank you very much!
Agreed. It's normally really easy to pick out contrast paint jobs. This doesn't have that monotone, mildly splotchy look. I'm going to have to experiment with this for my hobby skillset.
this looks obscenely good for being speed painted so yeah id quite like to see more of your speed painted stuff
Thanks! I'll make some more of those kinds of videos. I've picked up a lot of tricks doing commissions over the years.
theres not really anyone that does exclusively speed painting stuff (not that you have to do exclusively speed painting) to THIS level so yeah these little tricks make for great watching@@MattsHobbyHour . its quite funny really absolutely nothing like this existed in the 90s
Good video and well painted mini. More videos like this would be awesome.
all of it was amazing loved the gem. great job and thanks for the tips!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Never thought of shading Gold with Magos Purple, cant wait to try that out. Also really like the tint technique with Nazdreg Yellow and Seraphim Sepia. Great job!
Thank you!
DAMN! You just became my favorite painting channel. So much to be learned just from watching your technique with the brush.
Thank you! I'm glad you've found it helpful.
Awesome video! You were way ahead of everyone else. 2 years ago?
Could you make something like a Miniature for DnD?
Or a Bust of a character?
That is my color scheme...but GOOD. Now I'm off to put my old Lizardmen in the soup and do this.
I definitely wouldn't call this "speed painting", as I'd say that starts when you spend only a few minutes on a model,
but the mini looks great for the effort put into it. So maybe it could be called "bang for your buck painting" ;)
Good job. But 30min is not enough for that paintjob. It will take longer for sure ;)
About 30 minutes not including drying time or basing. I promise!
Okay, ill take your word for it. It would take longer for me for sure :p
@@Ma-fs3xe I've been painting commissions for around 20 years now which probably has something to do with the speed! I'll have to make a speed painting video with a stop watch one day, that would be fun
i dont know why this just occurred to me, but every time i see pink im going to call it pink horror.
Ok ok ok
If you're taking requests
Pink & Blue tyranids. This is the first of your work I've seen and Imma go and check out your nids in a sec.
But that's the scheme I want to go for for my entire army. Blue carapace, done in the classic Catgut Painting coconut crab kinda pattern, so black, then a dark blue then a light blue, and pink on the skin of the arms and legs and bits.
Still working on all the other bits tbh, but definitely a pseudo-synthwave bright pink gradient, probably involving glazing upwards from the hooves and claws and guns.
Yeah. And you're nearly at 2.5k and one more from me. Your style is simple and effective, the video quality, framing, and process are great, and the audio is excellent.
I like where this is going.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate all your kind words.
GREAT job brother...I'm really impressed...keep it up...wouldn't mind seeing a blue or red color scheme on the Saurus...
Thank you! Stay tuned this Wednesday... something might be in the works!
I'll spend hours on my mini and it won't look half as good as this.
Damn, he looks awesome! Great clear step-by-step instructions too, good job 👍🏻
Thank you!
Great vid! Effective Techniques and nicely explained with no bs talk around it. Like that.
Thank you!
God I love contrast paints. This might as well be a tutorial on: How to paint with Contrast Paints. Really insightful.
Thank you for watching!
I would like to see the same model and techniques in a blue color scheme.
Maybe the best saurus I've seen yet, probably wouldn't of gone for the gold backspike myself, but I guess sauruses can go for gold caps too with all the toad spiking and corrosion they get that way anyway, lol.
Maybe he is really proud of that gold spike and he polishes it every day! Thanks for watching!
#I just stumbled over your video. Great work!
Great video again! Have you tried any metallics from the Vallejo Air range or Pro Acryl? Save some time over GW stuff. Also, use a red brush, they go faster. It is known.
Thanks Eric! No I haven't tried them yet; will have to give them a shot. I've heard good things.
Great tutorial! But 30 minutes for that sized figure is still too long for me. I only get around to painting for a couple of hours per month . I need to spend, like, 10 minutes per figure, tops. Since I mostly use the figures for "rank & flank" games, having it look good on the tabletop (ie - from a couple of feet away) is what I'm looking for.
Thanks for watching! I hope you can find some more time to paint in the future, good luck!
Great paintjob.Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This is a great painting tutorial, really like your approach, and I've subscribed to your channel. I personally would love your approach to painting ork skin.
Thank you! Some orks/orcs would be a lot of fun to paint. I'll have to dig around and see what models I have to work with.
Waow ! Looks amazing !
Given how fast you seem to be, I wonder what it looks like when you take your time ! Surely Golden demon worthy.
Thanks! I won a few of those back in the day. Haven't competed recently due to time constraints, but maybe again one day!
Love the video. How important is the grey prime and white dry brush to get the zenithal highlight vs. Say just priming in wraithbone and applying the contrast paints directly on top of that?
You will get a slightly different results. Not bad results, just different. Since contrast paint is transparent it means that the under layers show through, and you'll get more variety of tones with the grey/white base versus a solid Wraithbone base. I'd say test out both if you can, and see which one you like more. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Superb pant job and excellent channel/ video. News subscriber here, thanks for your videos!
Thank you for watching and for your subscription!
Excellent paint job, I was wondering if you would mind if I give your channel to my students?. I'm no longer going to be able to teach them and most of them are new to intermediate to table top mini games. The reason for this is after 40 years of it I'm ready to retire and finish the pile of shame that I have to get done. 🙏😇🇺🇸
Thanks! Please feel free to share, thank you. Good luck on all your models
I liked the tip of going back with white to highlight details after dry-brushing. I'll try that. Makes sense since you're using contrast paints and shades. I never considered that.
It's great for getting any details the drybrush missed. And its smoother too. Thanks for watching!
Your voice would be perfect for narrating Stephen King audio books. Also I love the colour scheme.
Well that's a first! Never had that compliment before. Thanks! And thank you for watching!
This is an amazing paint job! Thank you so much, im going to follow it for my own Seraphon!
Thanks! Good luck with your army
Beautiful colours dinosaurs humanoid style
Great work, that gem is aces!
Thanks!
this is really really really helpful mate, thanks a lot for the information!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
This is super slick. The fact that only took like 30 min is nasty. Never thought about using purple on gold like that. Really nice
im not sure this took 30 minutes
Yea take that part with a grain of salt... nevertheless it is good looking and probably didn't take too long compared to other models with even more depth and highlight
Nice Video…
I would like to see painting Eldar 40K - Biel tan with speed or contrast paints.
Great suggestion! I have some Eldar in the works right now actually. It's not speed or contrast though. I'll have to make a speed guide some time soon!
I Love this! I dug-myself a Hole, but can you do a video on painting flesh, particularly faces, for Frostgrave soldiers? My Goal was to have about 20+ soldiers of different types, but 2 of each. It grew out of Hand! Now even after an hour a night after work, I am stuck with a worthless pile of grey plastic! Any speed painting tips for Individual soldiers/ warbands? Help??? !!!! lol TY in Advance! Scotty.
Sounds like you dug yourself pretty deep! I'd recommend exploring different washes. For example on faces, say you basecoat with Cadian Fleshtone. You can use Agrax Earthshade, Reikland Fleshshade, Targor Rageshade, and Seraphim Sepia to achieve four different results over one basecoat color. You can even add a second wash over the top of the first one to deepen and darken the color. You can use different washes on the rest of the model to create tons of variety as well. Hope this helps, and good luck!
Love the skin! I’ll definetly use that colour recipe for my chaos Karkadrak
Thank you! Good luck on your project
looks incredible; made me subscribe. do you have any tips on which colors to use if i want to adapt this method to the regular light blue color scheme?
Thanks! Aethermatic Blue right out of the pot would make a pretty good belly color. And Ultramarines Blue contrast paint would be a great start for the scales.
Awesome tutorial, thanks! Can you do a black and red or orange color scheme? Like a poison tree frog?
great idea! That would be a really cool combination. I'm working up a blue and grey scheme right now, but I think a black and orange scheme would be a great one to try out next. Thanks for watching!
This looks fantastic. I'm too lazy to mix paints but I'll see if I can replicate this :)
Give mixing a shot some time! It's faster than you think. I have a video on how to mix a whole pot of custom colors; if you're doing an army it makes things way easier... you'll only have to mix it once!
Very nice man! Id love to see more recipes made from mixing contrasts and color schemes. :) Love hove simple techniques makes it look so good! Keep it up!
Thank you! There will be plenty more of them in the future. Thanks for watching!
30mins for all this is crazy to me!
Great video. Love to see some Word Bearers in a similar format. Subscribed and liked.
Thank you and welcome aboard!
Great work from France ! What can of vernish did u use glossy or matte ?
Thanks! I use a matte spray varnish (Testor's Dullcote)
This looks amazing! Thanks for sharing the tips! That purple around the mouth and eyes is such a small/ quick step but I feel like it added a ton of depth! Can't wait for more videos!
Thanks for watching! Some times it's those little details that make all the difference. Magos Purple is great for that kind of thing.
So relaxing to watch. Brilliant finish too!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Would like to see your approach to Tyranids and skaven. This saurus looks great.
Thanks! I have a lot of Tyranids up on the channel already. And some Skaven are on my to-do list, hopefully in the next couple months. Thanks for watching!
This is great. The chill vibe is so relaxing to watch. Thank you for making this video, it's the first of yours I have seen. Please keep it up!
Thank you! I'll keep em coming!
Love it, I will try something like this on my reptisaurians, thanks!
Thanks for watching and good luck!
the lighter tone on the belly looks like a nice match for the new ghouls from games workshop!
great idea! I need to get my hands on some of those to try out a few recipes.
Really cool video, one of the best looking speed painting jobs I have seen so far, and you explained very good what you were doing and why you were doing it. Would love to see more!
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching!
Well done. I learned some tricks here and I have been painting for a while.
Glad to help, thanks for watching!
Perfectly timed video for me i just started painting up some of these yesterday
That's awesome! I'm going to have a starborne version coming out soon. Stay tuned for that one too. Thanks for watching!
Great video! You make me want to paint Seraphon Lizard Men now!
Thanks! Yes they are pretty fun looking models aren't they
Thanks so much for this !!!
Which color would you recommend for highlight the Green scales ?
Thanks for watching! I would recommend Straken Green or Skarsnik Green for highlights. Good luck!
@@MattsHobbyHour thanks a lot :)
Hi matt, I am following your instructions to paint a group of saurus warriors. Was wondering whether you could give some tips to improve them. Was thinking about some highlights of the spikes, but unsure how to do it
Hi and yes I'm happy to help out with some pointers. My video on the Spawn of Chotec has some tips about highlighting scales, though it's in red and not green, the approach would be the same.
Do you have Discord or Instagram? I have links in my About section; feel free to join the Discord server or send me a message on Instagram. It's easier to share photos of your models on one of those platforms.
I got discord. Will do! and I'll have a look at the video. Any advice regarding the colours in advance?
What a masterpiece! Great video! Would love to see you do some Orks!
Thanks! Great idea, some orks would be cool!
Badass!
Thank you!
For the gold try old gold from vallejo ❤
This was excellent! I had never considered mixing standard paints in with the Contrast paints like that, but it opens up so many other possibilities. Great color scheme!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful
Eyes look AMAZING!
Great result and very clear explanation. And that relaxing vibe makes it super nice to watch. This is the first video I've seen from you and already subscribed.
Could you show your method on Flesh Eater Courts ghouls, preferably in darker, earthy tones? I think your method would be great for them and they are a horde army, so speedpaint seems appropriate. Thanks!
Thank you for watching! Great suggestion with the ghouls. I'll look into picking some up for a future video. Thank you as well for your subscription, my channel is relatively new so there isn't a huge backlog yet; but that should change soon!
@@MattsHobbyHour definitely looking forward to more videos showing your fantastic method! Thank you for sharing!
I really liked this tutorial. Showing how to paint quickly and get a great result is so helpful. Also like seeing something that’s in the fantasy D&D genre….
Thanks! Fantasy is my personal favorite genre, and I'm hoping to get more of that on that channel soon. Thanks for following!
Those colours are so vibrant and have great contrast. Well done. You’ve gained a subscriber.
Great to hear, thank you!
What are the cons of GW contrast paints ? I know they are expensive regardless of that someone said something like " be extra careful not to paint over your finished work" I know that sounds basic but it was something along those lines. Nice job bud. Looks great !
There are a few cons - the biggest being that contrast paint creates a variety of tones, which is fine for heavily textured areas, but leaves flat areas (i.e. space marines) looking streaky, so you have to do multiple coats to make it look smooth. And at that point, does it really save time or look better than a solid base paint? Another thing is they need to be applied over a very light undercoat, and if you have to constantly go back and touch up with wraithbone before painting another color... that doesn't really save time either.
That's why I'm a fan of using them in a hybrid kind of style. Contrast paint near the beginning, and opaque paints later in the process.
@@MattsHobbyHour That makes sense thank you so much !
A cadian speedpainting video would be great
Noted! Thanks for the suggestion!
Love your videos and subscribed. I have a question though, what sprays would you substitute for they grey you used as i am having a hard time finding it in the UK. I am unsure if mechanicum standard would look correct. Any help would be wonderful. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Mechanicus Standard Grey spray would be a fine substitute. It's a little darker than what I use (the grey I use is a near exact color match to Dawnstone). With a darker base you'll get slightly darker shadows on the model, which you may or may not like. Personally I think it would work out just fine, I would just go a little heavier on the light zenithal over the top of it.
@@MattsHobbyHour Wow thank you for the speedy reply! Army painter Uniform grey is an almost exact colour match but had unfortunate experiences with army painter spray.
@@CEOofFriendship you're welcome and good luck!
Meanwhile it takes me 5 hours to finish a basic space marine
space marines take forever for me too!
Useful tips. Would love to see your take on Orcs
Noted! Thanks for watching!
Assimilated for Hive Fleet Gorgon.
Awesome!
Is that really bone white on the teeth? It looks so brown in the bottle
Yep just vallejo bonewhite. It could be the camera or lamps making it look lighter in the video. Thanks for watching!
outstanding work, glad to find you on here!
Awesome, thank you!
now that's an inspiring paintjob! keep it up :D
Thanks, will do!
This is excellent. Liked and subscribed 👍
Thank you!
Drying the brush on paper??? It's not the best start
Works just fine for me! Thanks for watching!
Can you make these with the skinks plz
Thanks for watching! I have a video for painting blue skinks. Hope this helps! ua-cam.com/video/mO41xHrhRJI/v-deo.htmlsi=vOqOA4mtv5lKtQMo
This looks beautiful and you make it easy to follow, so happy I found your Channel.
Thank you for watching and for subscribing!
I would love to see you do the hunters of huanchi
Thanks for the suggestion!
This was a great instructional video.
Thank you!
Really digging your videos and painting style
Thanks!
Superb, my thanks!
Thank you too!
Youve got a high elf oldworld army, id love to see some Lumineth as my grey pile grows!
Good idea! I have a couple lumineth troops I could paint up.
@@MattsHobbyHour that would be sick, especially if you went with something other than white! Most of the extant tutorials pant them up as one sees on the tin.
Great tutorial and a huge congratulations on 1500 subscribers! I'll reach that goal one day😊. Keep up the amazing work!
-John
Thanks John! I'll keep at it. Good luck to you
Avoid paper towels.. It leaves fibre on the brush...
Good tip! I haven't had that problem but it's good to know. Thanks for watching!
@@MattsHobbyHour best use a hard, textured surface... I picked the tip up from other painters.
Yes please more videos like this one! How would you do skinks, and mounts if this was the color scheme for you Saurus warriors??
Thanks! That's a good question. I really like the look of the red mounts on those new skink riders, so I'd probably go that route. Maybe an orange-red with tan undersides for the mounts/monsters. And for the skinks... probably similar to the Saurus, but maybe lighter and a little bit more of a yellow green. Lots to think about!
@@MattsHobbyHour wow thanks for the reply! This video makes me want to run down to my flgs and pick up my seraphon box I have stashed down there!!
@@dominiccote6184 good luck! I hope you get some nice results.
"hobby hour" video lasts 12 minutes ;)
if you watch it 5 times it adds up to an hour! ;)
@@MattsHobbyHour 🤣
Very nice...
15k subs! Well done and well deserved
15k would be amazing! Only 1,500 at the time. But we'll reach the big leagues soon I think!
What alternative i can use i cant find creed camo here in my country😢
You could use Militarum Green contrast. It will look different, but I think it would still look good. Good luck!
Thanks do i mix it with dearh guard?
@@jacobodajbura8829 yes I would make a mix of Militarum Green and Death Guard Green (4:1), just like the guide. It won't look exactly the same but I think it will work fine. Good luck!
Génial ! Je n’avais pas pensé au violet mago. Merci beaucoup 😊
Thank you very much:)
Thanks for watching!
These seem like easily achievable results. I personally love videos that show easy, yet great looking painting schemes that I feel like most normal mortals can reproduce 😊
