      Agreed. It's normally really easy to pick out contrast paint jobs. This doesn't have that monotone, mildly splotchy look. I'm going to have to experiment with this for my hobby skillset.

      Thanks! That's a good question. I really like the look of the red mounts on those new skink riders, so I'd probably go that route. Maybe an orange-red with tan undersides for the mounts/monsters. And for the skinks... probably similar to the Saurus, but maybe lighter and a little bit more of a yellow green. Lots to think about!

    Great video, and the final result is even better.
    One suggestion I'd make though, not related at all to technique, is to see if you can find some of the earth/ground textures made by Vallejo for their Diorama Effects line. For about 50-60% more cost compared to a bottle of Stirland Mud, you get a small tub containing over *eight times* as much of the stuff. So if you're going to be doing much painting over it anyway, might as well go for the cheaper stuff. (Plus it's even a pretty good adhesive for adding rocks or whatever to the base, as well, making it easy to just sink them in.)

    • @MattsHobbyHour
      @MattsHobbyHour  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching!
      And thank you for the suggestion. I got a bottle of the vallejo stuff recently, just using up some old GW stuff that I had lying around. The price is definitely a good thing. On most of my armies I still tend to do glue/sand though... maybe I'm just a creature of habit.

    • @JamesS-rt8jp
      @JamesS-rt8jp Рік тому

      I definitely get that, about being a creature of habit, as I used to do pretty much the same thing back in the day. I just found that for myself, the Vallejo textures sit precisely at the sweet spot where my basic cheapness and laziness intersect, so my bases almost always start with some variety of that stuff. 🙂
      (Having (once) tried one of GW's crackle texture paints, though, I did think they were pretty good, although still horribly overpriced by volume compared to their competitors. Generally speaking I actually don't even think their paint is as expensive as it seems from first glance, since it's so thick you end up getting a lot more out of it than you might expect by volume, but their texture paints and varnishes, to say nothing of their airbrush thinner, are just wildly overpriced.)

      @@JamesS-rt8jp yeah it is a little overpriced compared to alternatives. I do use a lot of both. The tricky thing is when making a video, I want to try and use supplies that are the most accessible to everyone. In most cases that is Games Workshop. Advanced hobbyists have the knowledge to substitute products, but a beginner might not be able to.

      I definitely hear that. But while I'd hesitate to call myself advanced in anything except age, I have learned a few tricks and figured it wouldn't hurt to pass that one on, since the cost savings of one tub of the Vallejo goop is enough to buy a full-price box of, I don't know, Space Marines or what have you... if, as you point out, you can get it as opposed to GW products, which are pretty ubiquitous.
      (That being said, I wasn't surprised to hear you knew about said alternative, but figured adding it in a comment might help someone else at least. Worst case scenario, maybe I've managed to boost your video's profile a bit with UA-cam's Mr. Al G. O'Rithm, thereby pushing it ever so slightly up the ranks, which one would hope can't hurt. 🙂)

    I would like to see the same model and techniques in a blue color scheme.

    Maybe the best saurus I've seen yet, probably wouldn't of gone for the gold backspike myself, but I guess sauruses can go for gold caps too with all the toad spiking and corrosion they get that way anyway, lol.

      Maybe he is really proud of that gold spike and he polishes it every day! Thanks for watching!

    I really like the more muted tones when compared to the vibrant blues on the box art. I'm thinking I'd like to do that for some seraphon, but I'm not sure how I could desaturate the contrast paints. My first thought is a mix of basillicanum grey + blue contrast + contrast medium in varying parts. Could that work?

      Yes I think that would work. You might want to check out my video on painting Stone Trolls/Rockgut Troggoths. I painted those in a muted bluish grey and I think the recipe would translate well to Seraphon. Good luck with your army!
