Of course, how COVID originated is essential because the answer can aid in the prevention of future pandemics. But there was something that Jon Stewart said that I think is over-the-top.

On May 26, 2021, President Biden directed the U.S. Intelligence Community to step up their investigative efforts into the origin of the covid pandemic and report back in 90 days. In addition, Australia, the European Union, and Japan have expressed a desire to make a more concerted effort to determine the covid origin.
Finally, on March 4, 2021, prominent scientists called for a complete and unrestricted investigation in an open letter to the WHO.
Why the sudden interest?
A recently released U.S. intelligence report stated that several researchers at China's WIV fell ill in November 2019 and had to be hospitalized. And just today, there was a study that showed evidence that people had antibodies in the United States in December of 2019.
The Lab leak theory
Was an employee at the Wuhan virology lab accidentally infected and then spread the virus, especially if the initial contacts were asymptomatic? The largest collection of bat samples, especially ones containing bat covid viruses, are in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Could poor lab techniques by inadequately trained technicians allow the virus to escape?
Could researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have made the virus more virulent and transmissible by experimenting with a gain of function mutations?
These mutations are designed to hasten the evolutionary process so scientists can be prepared for future pandemics.
This theory carries more controversy than the theory that the virus was naturally transmitted. It is more politically charged and has economic, social, and political implications. Unfortunately, this theory received only a brief mention in the WHO report. A mere 4 of the 313 pages of the report were devoted to it.
The Timeline
Several researchers inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology became ill in the fall of 2019 with symptoms consistent with COVID or the seasonal flu. Then, in November 2019, three of the WIV researchers became sick enough to seek hospital care.
Dr. Robert Redfield believes the current pandemic began in Wuhan as a localized outbreak in September-October 2019. Especially because of how well-adapted this virus is to human ACE2 receptors. This virus essentially hit the ground running.
The Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases did not formally notify the U.S. of the cluster of patients with pneumonia until December 31, 2019.
Dr. Robert Kadlac said that China used this 30 day lead time to purchase supplies.
Dr. Redfield spoke with his Chinese counterpart, Dr. George Gao, who was distraught that many people infected with COVID were not at the wet market.
The Precedent for Lab Accidents
Lab accidents have caused previous outbreaks of infection in China and elsewhere. In Beijing, China, for example, an outbreak infected nine people and killed one. In addition, a smallpox lab leak occurred in the United Kingdom in 1978, and an anthrax lab leak happened in the United States in 2014.
Furthermore, Dr. Shi Zhengli, aka the batwoman, has admitted that covid virus research was carried out in labs with Biosafety Level 2 rather than the more stringent Biosafety Level 4. In a Biosafety Level 2 lab, researchers wear white coats and gloves, not protective gear.
U.S. Embassy officials raised concerns about WIV's lab safety in 2018.
Chinese experts have also expressed concerns about lab safety in their own country, lamenting that "lab trash can contain man‐made viruses, bacteria or microbes" and that "some researchers discharge laboratory materials into the sewer after experiments without a specific biological disposal mechanism."

At this point, If we're to find out that the cause was a lab leak, how the F would that help humanity in any way? don't mistake economic/ideological conflict for the betterment of humanity. State actors wield this theory as a weapon, and that's why no virologist or any credible scientist would want to entertain this theory because they understand the harm. While people who are tasked with seeking the truth are "investigators" with little or no scientific background.

Our government has done a phenomenal job to keep the public away from the virus, yet it does not necessarily eliminate the possibility that Wuhan could be the origin. Think about how the USA said that they had proof of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. And that was after their guy went to the supplier of uranium and told them “no it’s not possible”. We do have the answer. We have been saying it for two years but were smeared and ridiculed for it.
A covid-like illness was spreading in western New York (Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse) during July - Sept of 2019. This illness featured a discernible splotchy rash on the face and neck, and struck with nausea, fever, vomiting; followed by weeks of coughing. I had it, as did my wife and daughter. Negative tests for influenza A and B, and HFM and RSV were ruled out. When I caught covid-19 again in Feb ‘20, the same rash appeared on my neckline, almost like shingles. An earlier strain of this was in our area.

If any investigation is to be done, then the first leak at Fort Detrick should be examined. What happened there must be seriously damaging in order for the lab to be closed off. This is the 1st part of the mystery. There is a possibility that the Wuhan lab is just used to either continue with the very dangerous work that is non-negotiable to be done in the USA.
The other theory is... then why not bring this to China? Use the lab and if a similar leak happen as in Fort Detrick, then China will have to face the music.
So any investigation should be from the starting point. Question is ; would the USA allow an investigation in its own lab in order for the following investigation to be taken to the Wuhan lab?

If it were one lab leakage, then probably, most of the affiliated 4P, 3P labs leak/leaked worldwide while they run subject to the same strict regulations. By convention, almost all of the 4P labs in the different interest countries are, to some degree, controlled/surveilling/heavily funded by the local and multinational governments and security force/military forces.

The paper Reuters is citing is currently being subject to critical review by outside experts in preparation for publication in a scientific journal.
Until this process of peer review has been completed, the evidence needs to be treated with caution.

As one doctor said, part of the tragedy of this pandemic was isolation of scientists and medical professionals who often collaborate in crisis. As evidence unfolds, it looks like there are a couple hopeful treatments that would void the emergency authorization of the shot. You can see why those in power, from government to big pharma are censoring life saving treatment prospects because they stand to lose credibility, money, and influence. Further, their usual mode of progressing science is through the scientific publication and peer-review system, which continued apace, and was accelerated by online preprint services. The "isolation" mentioned was the shutdown of in-person conferences and collaborative visits (as for all of us), not some online censorship complaint.

Days before, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) updated dashboard showed that the country's first deaths related to COVID-19 dated back to January 2020, weeks earlier than previously officially reported.
Multiple pieces of research also suggest the presence of the virus in the country much earlier than previously known, in some cases even earlier than the first cases reported in China.

I've been researching the history of GoF since March of last year. Origin hypothesis aside (they are not theories yet) one question has been on my mind that I have heard addressed no where. If you look at the debates that were taking place in scientific, medical and global health communities for years prior to 2020 about the risk vs reward of doing GoF the folks that would argue for would always rest on the same thesis. They would essentially say "we have to do this risky research because if we don't then we will be ill prepared for when the next Pandemic occurs." So COVID-19 emerges and our initial response is wash your hands and wear a mask - essentially the same advice given over a hundred years for the Spanish Flu. So origins aside - what did we gain from GoF research that has been costing us millions of dollars and been ongoing for about a decade?

Hypothetical scenarios don't prove execution. Stick to science. By definition science is merely proven REPEATED RESULTS. No theory on the origin of COVID19 proves it came from the lab. The reason it's not possible is because there has been no 100% match with lab samples and the exact genetic sequence of SARS-COV-2 (i.e. COVID19).

We didn't know much at the very beginning of the pandemic, and that information has been slowly filling out over time. Unfortunately, governments and news organizations have motivations OTHER THAN being 100% honest and actually sticking to the existing evidence, so the messages they spread to the public have been inconsistent at best, and in blatant contraction at worst. That's not the fault of the science. That's the fault of governments not taking the pandemic seriously enough, and news organizations having a decades long history of being very poor at accurately reporting scientific research.

So the fact you keep pushing this narrative is insane. It does protect you and could prevent you from dying for sure, but more than 99.4% of people who get covid survive, this does not exclude those 70 and up who have multiple comorbidities (including age), but these are just the numbers we do have. Also worth noting that a recent study out of Israel as well as another independent study found Pfizer in particular to be 39% and 44% respectively. So tell me, how is it "better" than the flu shot? E-cigarettes are now known to lead to lung infections. A few pneumonia cases doesn't mean anything. In Wuhan, tens of thousands of people were severely sick in a months time. Compare that to what you are talking about.

All known agents tested, including legionnaires disease n viruses, came back negative. It caused the quarantine and shut down of the facility. Most importantly, it was a pneumonia outbreak in JULY!

So, it is possible that this was a man made virus, but let’s follow all leads, no matter which lab from which country it may take us, because the goal should be to identify the cause and to prevent future recurrences, rather than try to fulfill a confirmation bias for political gains

@@jefferi78 Wuhan has a population of 10 million while Frederick has 60 thousands, population density is a key factor in the virus spreading speed, it makes total sense if it broke out in Frederick and kept a low level transmission for months, that's why we see a this so-called mysterios pneumonia that suddenly appeared in Aug 2019 in the US, with similar symptom white lungs like covid-19, contracted nearly 2500 people and killed 55 people but suddenly disappeared in the end of 2019, same time when US started covid test, curiously, only to people with China-travelling history. And if you read the news, you know NIH researchers just found out covid has been circulating around US at least from mid Dec 2019 based on 24k blood samples they collected in the end of 2019. Antibody of covid was found in a case where his blood sample was collected in 7th Jan 2020, and for human body to generate antibody, it needs around 2 weeks after getting infected, so you do the math yourself.
In the beginning, during the first few months of chaos as the pandemic formed, there was more than just a few whistleblowers on the lab leak theory. People that were directly involved and had documents. We saw these people die or disappear. My point here is not to lend an air of credibility to the theory but more so to offer a definitive need for greater efforts in finding the truth.

I went to school in China. We had a center next to the computer science department at a top-tier university. We shared a I can't call it a bathroom. I forget what they're called but they're like floor toilets. There was s*** and piss everywhere. There are no doors for the stalls. No toilet paper. It was so horrible. Did I take it upon myself to buy bleach and clean both the women's and men's area. I attempted to do it a second time but they were so embarrassed. The graduate students that they told me that they would do it. Sometime later I noticed how the janitorial staff would wash their mops and the toilets. Not even using any cleaners. They will then take their mops and smear everything all over the floors. It was beyond disgusting. After that I never ate out. I did buy noodles from Uyghurs Muslims. I believe that they serve the cleanest food based on halal protocols. Noodles and cabbages all that I ate while I studying in China. Anyway I'm not surprised about anything leaking from any other laboratories.

I got covid middle Oct 2019. Minneapolis MN and I can’t be the first person to get it.
How did you come to that conclusion? Tests didn’t exist then so you’d have to check antibody levels. Later in 2020 which I don’t think we even havereliable data on the half-life of antibodies in humans today.
Thanksgiving Day 2019 I went to the clinic because I felt like I could not get air. I could inhale and exhale fine, but felt like I was suffocating. I would feel like I was going to pass out, lay down and just shoot back up after just a few seconds. I thought I was going to die from lack of sleep. I did not get better until January 2020 and am just now starting to get some strength back June 2021. Laowhy86 described the same symptoms. I think a lot of people had it early but nobody knew what it was.
Around thanksgiving my sister in law came back from visiting her family in China and got her family sick, my parents then came to visit me and made me sick too. I was told it was a new type of flu that the vaccine did not work for. I was ill for over 2 months in and out of hospital my lungs closing and need oxygen. I was diagnosed with asthma after my fever and blood coughing went away so I was given immune suppresors and new heart medicine to help my irregular heart rhythm. I am now thinking it could have been something else 🤔
My lungs remain weak and now I use two inhalers. I never get the flu and this flu was brutal . There were some deaths from it locally a 10 yr old girl just got purple and collapsed dying 2days later and another lady who got a terrible headache and sore throat dropped dead the next day at the same school. There were several.cases of that rare flu but everyone forgot after covid started spreading here we had some of the earlier cases at the military base from people coming back from abroad who were quarantined but infected personnel at the base.

As doctors were scared treating/visiting patients with airway sickness ,she was not treated at all for 3 months. Also the inhaler she had , against allergy sometimes worked, sometimes not. So the doctors we were allowed to visit had no clue as they said that type of inhaler MUST work, so we dont know ... Always sent away as no detectable bacterial inflammation present so must be viral, go home , takes 5 weeks to get better. Untill 911 dialed for almost suffocating. 2th time she was taken to hospital after 3 months. Recovered a bit , but still very tired , lung capacity only a bit ok with loads of inhalers. Back home after 10 days hospital for 1 week. Lung doctor suspects ( till further research) astma attack 3 months ago but never treated ..long way to go.

That hospital tested shortly afterwards all personell beginning March. Showing 30 percent being positive......

Ctr, when, as I was taking units of blood out of the fridge in Immunohematology, a BAT flew into the lab and was dive bombing me. Sars-cov-2 was first identified in Spain's waste water in march 2019. The closest reservoir is the horseshoe bat. I watched them fly by the hundreds (more?) Every late afternoon when I lived in Spain. Of course it could have escaped in China. The main.issue is why China, the US and Europe dismissed it until march 2020 and did nothing.

I was saying Lab leak from Day 1. We have labs doing the same thing, as does Russia and many other countries so a leak was only a matter of time.
The difference would be the world would know about it much sooner and would never be allowed to be a pandemic anywhere else.

Maybe you should look at every countries on how they managed this Covid-19 pandemic simply by looking at no. of affected people and their deaths in their countries. If you are able to help this people, everyone will appreciate you. In this situation, we just need to solve the current problems in the world. Trying to look at who should be blamed is not helping. I have a question Doctor Hansen , does it make any difference in terms of the virus if it is natural or the result of gain of function? I remember reading somewhere that a Chinese virologist thought that the virus (if the result of a natural zoonotic spillover) would reach a natural replication ceiling and peter out - but would this evolved and natural behaviour of a virus which is similar to say quorum sensing in bacteria, not function if the virus has been engineered to be more transmissible?
This is for the science to show us the origin, but unfortunately science is not unfolding anything. Why only concentrate in Wuhan. The scope should cover a wider areas, when we have reports that they are people in USA and elsewhere have anti bodies with much earlier timeline. We may have credible information out there instead of just dwelling on Wuhan which had already so much political hypes. Let science take the lead in a fair, open and unbiased investigation.

Dr. Mike, let's talk about Fort Detrick next, the assumption that it might have been leaked from this US lab. Since there were cases of people getting sick and died around the time when the lab was closed down for safety reasons which wasn't exactly well explained by the lab, and the media suddenly stop reporting about it. And this event happened the same year, but before the first covid19 case found in Wuhan. When a Japanese media pointed the finger at US's Fort Detrick lab for possible leakage from US, China followed up with that comment, US's response was trying to redirect the attention back to China, and clearly stated not allowing the WTO to enter US to check any research data, etc.

1) How is a chimera created in nature?
2) if it took a year to identify the zoonotic path in earlier viruses, how could scientists credibly say with certainty in February 2020 that it was certain to be a zoonotic origin?
3) Many of the same scientists that signed the letter you display in February were involved with Peter Daszak and Ecohealth Alliance which was helping fund gain of function research, yet none disclosed conflict of interest to The Lancet

This all points to a much larger problem. People have generally lost faith in our health care industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the government agencies assigned to regulate those industries. I think he meant the time when Sars virus was leaked from the research lab which stored the virus sample. This happened 1 year after Sars was over, aka 2004, as far as i remember.
