Old age and feebleness has crept up on me these days but I still remember the good talks with Lavon and sure wish I could do it again.
I was born just a few miles from where he was and my parents knew his, it was a very small community ! Many of my relatives still live in the area, some above ground and many that reside in the Cemetery close by. Even though we were as poor as church mice our parents tried to raise us right and I believe his done a great job ! 👌

I believe every word of this because you got his REAL spelling of his name correct! Even though his actual name was Mark Lavon Helm, but no one ever called him Mark..
Amazing story! So are you from Chicken Scratch, AK too?

There once was a Rock critic who said that playing the drums and singing lead on a song ' live ' was like flying 2 jets at the same time ! Levon Helm was such a master musician craftsman ,that he made the task as easy and simple as smiling ...a true genius of his art .Max Weinberg was giving it ...wow , look at this guy dance his stuff ? Magical ...

The goofy grin on Max Weinberg's face (an incredibly accomplished drummer in his own right) while watching Levon tells you all you need to know. When the pros themselves are star-struck, you're a legend..

This is Lavon you're seeing. Always respectful. Never changed from his roots. Never spoke to anyone he didn't say, "Yes sir" & "No sir"; and "Yes mam" & "No mam" to. Born and raised a Khristian; went Home one. That says something for the man, having lived and worked through the nutty Hippie years when America's children rushed off to foreign lands to find God. Salut! Bravo!

Rolling Stone ranked Levon Helm as 91st on their list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. And here Levon tells Conan that he doesn't really consider himself to be a vocalist.
That's really too bad if Levon didn't know what a fantastic singer he was.
Oh well. I'm sure he knew that he was a great drummer.

Conan had Levon on several times, he's one of Max Weinberg's idols, and Jimmy V still goes up to do Midnight Rambles when he can. I think you're incorrect. I think everyone had respect for him there.
Maybe Conan didn't do his homework for the interview, but just speaking from seeing footage of the Band on Late Night a few years after this and Levon coming on in 2009 just before Conan moved to LA, I think Conan had a great deal of respect for him and liked having him on.

Larry Williams (May 10, 1935 January 7, 1980[1]) was an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll singer, songwriter and pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana. Williams is best known for writing and recording some rock and roll classics from 1957 to 1959 for Specialty Records, including "Bony Moronie", "Short Fat Fannie", "Bad Boy", "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" and "She Said Yeah," which were later covered by British Invasion
