RIP the five members of The Band Garth Hudson (August 2, 1937 - January 21, 2025), aged 87 Levon Helm (May 26, 1940 - April 19, 2012), aged 71 Richard Manuel (April 3, 1943 - March 4, 1986), aged 42 Robbie Robertson (July 5, 1943 - August 9, 2023), aged 80 Rick Danko (December 29, 1943 - December 10, 1999), aged 55 You will be remembered as legends
There should be a limit on how many consecutive times one can listen to this version. After three, you are bordering on a state of despair that renders one useless for the remainder of the day.
Although Hudson is physically frail - he has reportedly been living in an assisted care facility since the death of his wife, Maud, in 2022 Garth is the sole survivor of The Band, I'm 70 and can only wish to live as long as Garth. They were a truly amazing band so special and light years ahead of their contemporaries.
Maybe it’s Garth’s memories that keep him going. A guy who might have ended as a music teacher in small town Ontario, instead was given the gift of sharing his instrumental legacy with the world. Without Garth, The Band would not have been.
Absolutely agree with you about their music being light years ahead 💜 I just turned 71 and listening to this song today, sounds so good, their sound has traveled well over the years
After Levon passed, my brother and I trekked to Woodstock to to show his daughter was giving at The Barn. An intimate musical performance I will never forget, bringing me to tears. Not a dry eye in the place. What a great band.
I cannot describe my sadness on the loss of Robbie Robertson- “and the rains fall down on my door- and the dawn don’t rescue me no more.” I’ve followed The Band for decades and have the clearest memories of listening to The Last Waltz over and over and over. These losses of great musicians are hitting me harder and harder and harder. Thank you Robbie.
love to you, Deborah.....I get it...and as I came here to watch Robbie.....then you see Rick and Levon....and then Garth comes out on the sax...the only one left. The music matters.
We made a tactical error, Deborah. We attached deeply to literally hundreds of musicians that were ten years or so older than us, and now they are dying almost daily. And the ones who wrote the insightful songs, and the challenging songs - the songs that pushed us into becoming deeper ... those are the ones, whose passing hits us the hardest. I think that, when Dylan dies, the country will just shut down for a week.
I listen to this one so much. This is my favorite song in The Last Waltz. Rick's vocals are crushing. Robbie's magical right hand shimmy shake during the solo. Garth on smooth sax. Sighhhhh. They are so young and beautiful and talented here. Time Flies. Rest well, Robbie. You've got some good musicians to hang with on the other side. Save me a good seat at the show.
I agree, somebody breaks up with you, or you break up with someone, not necessarily because you don't love them, but because you feel the relationship is not going anywhere. I speak from personal experience and the line "the dawn don't rescue me" rings true, you get up in the morning thinking things will get better, and you realize it is not getting better. Totally identify with his song. Rick pours all his emotions into it, such heatache, such perfection
My first wife split after six years of marriage. She returned about four months later. I heard this tune in my apartment, from a Band album, and played it for her upon her return. She sat and listened with no emotion whatsoever. That's when I knew it was over. I moved forward and am with the love of my life after 36 years. A truly great tune and it played an important role in my life! Thank you Robbie and the Band for providing such beautiful music for a generation and more!!
In late 1976, my partner moved to another city, about 1,000 miles away. in the months before I was able to join her there, I bought The Best of The Band on Cassette, and discovered this song. When I came to the verse "Well, I love you so much that it's all I can do to keep myself from telling you that I never felt so alone before," it broke me up, I was a mess, but it sustained me till I joined her. I already knew some of The Band's work, and had the NME review of the concert, and went to the Australian Premier of the movie. After 15 or 16 times I lost count of the number of times I saw it, and now have all of their studio work and live work, including their time with Dylan. My favourite band of all time.
Like John Prine's Far From Me - Why, we used to laugh together And we'd dance to any old song Well, you know, she still laughs with me But she waits just a second too long
The best thing Scorsese ever did was to save this, the best version of The Band's most heart wrenching song, for us to cherish until Death do us part. Period. Thank You, The Band. The best band of the 20th Century.
That scar under Rick’s right eye? I have one just like it. It was created as I was being born. I was born breach, meaning the doctor had to reach in with his forceps and grab me by the head to get me out. Many equate breach birth to PTSD. All I know is, even that far back, I didn’t want to come out.
Yes elevates the song and its great song and performance to another level. At the end in the spot light he almost looks slightly embarrassed by the applause given.
Yes, indeed, Garth’s sax solo makes up for the first guitar solo. JRR had to up his game after hearing that and finished stronger. Now Rick and Solomon Burke must be trading hellacious verses on that one up in heaven. Great song, thank you for sharing it.
Love love love Garth’s sax at the end. Danko is just oh so soulful and heartfelt. A few years before my time or I would like to think I would’ve been there! Thank you Scorsese and The Band!
This is as close to perfection as one can get. Not in a sense of the perfect rhythm or every note perfect, but in a sense of music perfectly expressing human emotions. They created a magic moment we can all share.
My heart is broken.....Garth & Robbie on this tune are pure magnificence....I feel like my teen years have broken nit unlike my heart...Garth Hudson Forever..at least perhaps now they are forever together.....
There’s an old saying,” You never really die till the last person who knows your name dies too.” I have a feeling this band will be around for a long time.
I was driving on the PA Turnpike listening to WXPN from Philly and they announced Rick' death and played this song. I had to pull off to the shoulder to cry my eyes out.
Ironically, being from Phila..too,my brother saw Rick in a little bar (he forgets where exactly but it was near Reading, possibly Allentown, towards his later days...After TR show was over, there was Rick at a table signing his book, alone...
I had to grow up (many years) to appreciate how great The Band really was. As part of my Thanksgiving ritual I saw The Last Waltz again today. The more I hear Rick Danko, the more I love him. He draws you in. When the song is done you don't know whether to hug him or give him a bowl of soup to care for him.
Dear Dr Rick.... Sorry to notice about your loss.... I lost two wives 10 years apart were murdered when I wasn't around to protect them.... Talk about stampeding cattle...... Sorry for your loss I'm not trying to make mine bigger than just is what it is man. Luckily I have an old friend of 44 years and she might be my next wife but I told her you have to come armed!!! Feel like I'm a hex on my women !!! They all die!!! But Pamela is pretty tough and she has guns !!!
I miss this band, I wish there was another that could come close to doing what they did. Wow what a collection of musicians that complimented each other so completely.
One of the purest songs ever- I can listen to this over and over again. The sax is brilliant. Appreciate all of these musicians. You will be missed Robby. Your music will live on. Rest in peace 🎼☮️
they were all brilliant. this version of this song is heartbreakingly beautiful. it's been making me cry since it was released. they're all gone now except Garth. there's no holding back the tears as I'm listening now...
Check out the conception and how this was made and you'll understand why it's better than a studio version. It's great to see that other people haven't forgotten what good music is.
Danko seemed like the gentlest soul. Richard seemed like he was always hurting in every way. I hope he found peace and is playing music with his brothers Rick and Levon.
I knew Rick and Levon, to a lesser extent. Rick and I were friends for over 7 years before he passed away. He was funny, goofy, shy, and would literally give his shirt off his back to someone in need. He was truly one of the purist souls I've ever met. His demons are what eventually killed him. I visit him and Levon at least once a month when I'm near Woodstock. I miss him.
@@zahrahblissHow lovely for you to be able to say this, Danko’s voice sure reaches the parts ❤- thank you for your lovely words about him. I’ve loved listening to the Band since I first saw The Last Waltz many moons ago 🐝
Goddamnnn. I so miss Rick Danko! What a voice! I never get tired of hearing Rick singing this song, but this has to be the best, most heartfelt version, I've ever seen! RIP Rick Danko!
4:45 am June 6th of 2020, I said my finals goodbye to my mother. I have a gaping hole where my heart once resided. And the first thing I thought of was the lyric “and the sun don’t shine anymore, and rains fall down on my door.” Only difference is that the rains fall on my soul as I weep for my dear sweet mother. It breaks my heart I didn’t get to say I love you one last time. Rest easy mom, no more pain.
100%. I’ve watched this performance so many times it’s almost embarrassing to admit, but it’s just perfection, by every single member. Thanks to Robbie Robertson for writing this most gorgeous, saddest of songs, and having the vision to recognize that Rick Danko was the only one to sing it, Also love Robbie’s tasty, soulful note-pinching solos and fills. Garth’s sax brings me to my knees. The harmonies are so beautiful. Rick’s emotion and broken voice filets me every time, and my heart just bleeds out.
No one like them, ever!!The Band was so underrated, its sad. The whole Last Waltz was an AMAZING concert, and It Makes No Difference from this concert was & will always be my favorite version of this song. Listen up youngsters, THIS is music.
One of the best love songs of all time.I loved those guys and my first concert ever was them in Long Beach,Ca after I returned from Vietnam, unforgettable.
I’m 37 yrs old and I know this music was before my time but this literally gives me goosebumps every time listening to it…. Pure, raw, unfiltered emotions through music…. There is not much music that can or ever will compare to the skills the Band had. Legends in my book…. Will be listening to this until the day I die. Thank you Robbie, Rick, Levon, and Hudson
One left...RIP Robbie. I'm so fortunate to have listened to your songs growing up. Last Waltz is one of the best music documentaries ever made. Man this one hurts.
Such a shame to have to say goodbye to that last member of this incredible band. Fortunately this music will live long past we're all gone and no matter when folks hear this music, they will just sit in wonder. Thanks Garth---thanks all of you!
Well now that Garth has Crossed the Great Divide, to take his place with his brothers on high, Leaving a void as big as a Woodstock Sky and a Poet devoid of minstrels to give wings to his prophesies and lullabies, the Lark has fallen silent and the Songbirds without Song. Ladies & Gentlemen, take or vacate your Seats as you will, Time out has been called, It's Full House on High, Wipe away your Tears, There's no time to Cry. I hear The Band strike up, there's a Stirring amongst the Stars, The Angels are filing in, between Venus & Mars. The Sun has bowed to the Moon from the Wings. Draw open the Curtains, it is Time for a Renewal, a Start of Wonderful things. Lift up your Voices once more & let the Heavens Ring. 😊❤🎉
I learned about the Band because I changed my major from writing to screenwriting in college (Syracuse University). I had one class about music in film and had to watch this film. I fell in love with their music. My mother bought me a case of CDs by the Band for Christmas.
"I never felt so alone before" is so true. My wife died and I miss her so much. This is such a powerful song. Rick's singing makes the lyrics so sad. Than you have Robertson;s riffs are so planted in the song that it's stunning. I saw them with Dylan way back when.
"Well I love you so much and it's all I can do Just to keep myself from telling you That I never felt so alone before." The way that Danko sings those lines just cracks my heart wide open.
Rest in peace, Robbie Robertson (7, Aug 2023), Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm. Brilliant musicians (Hawks) and creative forces in our time. We will remember.
Still come back to this track over and over again . Timeless. Rick's voice was my favourite . Such great characters . Sad about Robbie's arrogance in later years .
@Vinod Sharma - I agree ... I just keep coming back because it never loses its emotional power. I read Testimony, ‘This Wheel’s On Fire and Across The Great Divide. Everyone has their own story. Not to say Robbie is blameless, but his description of how things ended put things in a more balanced light. There was fault all around. I wouldn’t blame any of them ... just people heading in different directions.
For those who know this movie well, we understand why Martin Scorsese had a soft spot for Rick Danko. Scorsese’s brilliance as a director enabled him to perceive in real time a special performance. What was it about Rick Danko that captured so many hearts? Was it that heart-breaking catch in his voice? Or was it the awareness from the moment we saw him in this film’s opening scene, that although he was spiritually so innocent, he would be the one called upon to repent for all our sins?
The Band's song "This Must be Christmas Tonight", in my opinion is one of the most underrated and neglected "Christmas songs". It is never played anywhere. But is a tight, melodic, tuneful, harmonic, driving, insightful description of Christ's birth. Totally orthodox Christian understanding of the greatest event of this world's history.
Thanks for the great songs Robbie and the Band. What a beautiful heartfelt exchange between Robbie and the Sax. In particular, Robbie's solo before the first sax solo really stands out to me. Another great artist lost, but luckily for everyone, this fantastic concert was wonderfully captured for all to see. The last Waltz is a glimpse of a time gone by with many talented artists doing their thing!
I feel exactly the same way. The combination from Robbie’s greatest solo part to Garth’s saxophone always gives me goosebumps! Can't find this great play so often. I will never be bored with this tune. Rick’s desperate voice also captures me. This is the best tune in the ‘Last waltz’ film for me.
One of the best song ever written! Great lyrics (Robbie was a real poet....We'll miss him so much)...wonderful, heartful sax solo...unique lead vocals ...celestial harmomies...This song is a pure beauty
My wife and I listen to the Last Waltz every couple of weeks, and we have for 22 years of courting and marriage. Before that I listened to The Band for many many years. They are the best. Never saw them, though. Took them for granted when I was young and in America. Lived half a world away most of my life, and when in NYC never even made it to the Midnight Rambles... don't put off for tomorrow what you owe it to yourself to do today.
David Crosby, Gordon Lightfoot and now Robbie Robertson. I grew up listening to their music in the 60s & 70s. It was a real privilege to hear them getting started.
Rest in peace Garth. Thank you for all the music.

He could hold the sweetest note for so long. It was truly beautiful the way he played. The Band lives on forever though.
Did Garth died today?

I am a huge Levon fan, but really love Rick Danko's singing on this track. Probably Robertson's best playing as well. God they were a talented bunch

I think you are correct.
“The dawn don’t rescue me no more” is one of the most powerful lyrics I have ever heard, especially how it is sung here.
Amen. Most great music is born in pain. You feel his, 40 years later.
That lyric sticks with me too. It's absolute desperation.
Yeah, that lyric is the polar opposite of "The sun will come out tomorrow..." It makes no difference when despair and heartbreak prevail.
Bawled my eyes out first time I sang and played this tune, that was the line that broke the dam.
Amen, rest in peace Mr. Danko, Mr. Helm, Mr. Manuel✌️🎶❤️
Garth's solo at the end is just so pure and beautiful. I hope he's reunited with the other four and they are together playing great music again.

He was funny, goofy, shy, and would literally give his shirt off his back to someone in need. He was truly one of the purist souls I've ever met. His demons are what eventually killed him. I visit him and Levon at least once a month when I'm near Woodstock. I miss him.
Danko was fearless. He inspired me to pursue singing songwriting
@@zahrahblissThank you
@@zahrahblissHow lovely for you to be able to say this, Danko’s voice sure reaches the parts ❤- thank you for your lovely words about him.
Head up Ricco. She would want that I'm sure...
We all meet again brother, with no more rain!
She knows!
I lost my Dad on June 7. I feel your pain. I miss him so much.
@@GraveyardPoet and Ricco, Grief is a measure of how much you loved someone. And how much they loved you.
Thank you Robbie Robertson, not ashamed to say I cried when I heard the news. 'Lay a flower in the snow, fallen angel'. Rest in Peace
Garth holding his last note for what seems like 10 seconds, one of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard.
and he blows it a little stronger toward the finish for a crescendo
You are so right - I often listen to this song alone for the sound of Garths sax. It’s pure art!
Today we lost the last man..RIP Garth Hudson....😢😢
Thankful for you tube. They all are now gone. 😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤
Tell all the boys we miss them, Garth. Have a great time at the reunion, old man. Thank you for every note.
RIP Garth Hudson. His appearance in this is nothing short of a miracle
Truly a tragic day, the Band has finally become part of history… fare thee well, Garth Hudson
"IN MEMORIAM": GARTH HUDSON (THE BAND / THE HAWKS) (1937-2025)
Danko at his very finest, The Band close to breaking up but never better, Hudson.. what a genius
@@genevievegelatto8447 What a great, beautiful, poetic reply, thank you!
close to breaking up? In the act of breaking up!
that is Richard Manuel, not Hudson
Danko..what an amazing lost soul
No one like them, ever!!The Band was so underrated, its sad. The whole Last Waltz was an AMAZING concert, and It Makes No Difference from this concert was & will always be my favorite version of this song. Listen up youngsters, THIS is music.
The Band was the best Band ever. Nothing more to say.
RIP Robbie Robertson. This song is pure perfection.
when you're in a certain mode this song hits hard. RIP Band and thanks for the music.
This is one of the greatest moments in the history of rock music
No matter how many years pass I find myself returning to this song whenever I miss my dad
This and Stage Fright are my favorite The Band songs. Danko is perfectly imperfect as a singer.
Four of them gone... rest easy, Rick, Robbie, Levon + Richard. What a loss to the world.
Truly a loss to the world, they are missed.
Makes me want to cry today.
What an absolute monster of a heartbreak song!!!!!
I only came across this song a week ago & can’t stop listening to it! And I can’t take my eyes off Rick Danko! 😍
He's something else
Gorgeous talented and a kind man
RIP Legend
My friend you are now 'hooked',
Luuuuv Rick Danko
One of the best love songs of all time.I loved those guys and my first concert ever was them in Long Beach,Ca after I returned from Vietnam, unforgettable.
I’m 37 yrs old and I know this music was before my time but this literally gives me goosebumps every time listening to it…. Pure, raw, unfiltered emotions through music…. There is not much music that can or ever will compare to the skills the Band had. Legends in my book…. Will be listening to this until the day I die. Thank you Robbie, Rick, Levon, and Hudson
richard?
Yep, Richard Manuel. I almost cried the moment I heard he took his own life. He was The Band’s voice.
What a group they were, who else would just jump in with a saxophone, absolutely awesome
That Sax. Those Vocals. All of it! Love me some Band.
One left...RIP Robbie. I'm so fortunate to have listened to your songs growing up. Last Waltz is one of the best music documentaries ever made. Man this one hurts.
This song makes me cry. It is crazy beautiful.
Maybe my favorite song from the band.
Rest in peace.
Robbie
Levon

❤❤
Ditto. This song rips my heart out.❤
Such a shame to have to say goodbye to that last member of this incredible band. Fortunately this music will live long past we're all gone and no matter when folks hear this music, they will just sit in wonder. Thanks Garth---thanks all of you!
This was the first song played at my husbands funeral. This song means a lot.
Thank you,Mr Danko for this wonderful song. R.I.P
AMEN
These guys were at the absolute top of their game here. What a band.
THE Band
Absolutely beautiful. Garth's sax gets me every time.
R I P. Garth, a Canadian Legend. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
R.I.P. Richard, Rick, Levon, Robbie, and Garth 💔
I've been listening to this song for more than 40 years and am blown away every time!! WOW!!
This is the stand out track ... just beautiful...
🍺
I feel you pain. I hope G-dad’s tender mercy heals your heart soon.
I’m so sorry for your loss, music such as this truly can be the thread to the life we lived with our dearly departed
Feels appropriate that Garth is the one to bring it home, the last man still with us. Each guy brought so much to the table.
💔 RIP Garth.
"Well I love you so much and it's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before."
The way that Danko sings those lines just cracks my heart wide open.
It's almost as if he's going break down and cry right there...
Rest in peace, Robbie Robertson (7, Aug 2023), Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm. Brilliant musicians (Hawks) and creative forces in our time. We will remember.
It always amazes me how the singers harmonize so beautifully with no ear piece in their ears and yet never a wrong note…
The Band was the perfect name, they were THE Band!!
😢 RIP Gareth Hudson..the honey boy
Makes me tear up every time!
This song has helped me through many troubled times over the last forty years. Their music is timeless.
"Well I love you so much" - tears me up every time. And that sweet bit of chat from the boys at the start - you can feel the brotherly love.
Whispering Pines is another blissfully soulful song of theirs, with Richard doing the vocals. I just listened to that one before this one.
Amen.
Read em & weep 😓
My all times favorite song ❤
My favourite song by my favourite band. It just doesn’t get any better ... that song burns with pain and remembrance. Ricky owned that vocal!
@@peterrobertson2580 Throw is drugs, booze, money etc etc not hard to see how it can happen.
Peter Robertson It makes no difference, the Band can not be equaled, no more....
Very emotional, nostallgic song played by good hearted people, bring a lot of nice memories ,superb.
RIP the great Robbie Robertson
Still weep every time I listen to this.
RIP Robbie Robertson. Your music touched a much younger generation.
RIP Robbie
I feel exactly the same way.
The combination from Robbie’s greatest solo part to Garth’s saxophone
always gives me goosebumps!
Can't find this great play so often.
I will never be bored with this tune.
Rick’s desperate voice also captures me.
This is the best tune in the ‘Last waltz’ film for me.
I agree, wonderful sax after the solo of Robbie. Can listen a 1000 times and not get bored ❤❤
One of their greatest songs and the saxophone at the end just kills it
One of the best song ever written!
Incredible voice but more importantly one of the purest souls. No affectation.
Thank you for the great music and inspiration Garth. We're already missing you.
Legend has it, Richard Manuel was also present on stage at the time, singing into a live mic.
James Davis if Robbie had his way it would have been called Robbie and The Robertsons
Scorsese's camera situation was challenging, but Richard was so wasted, apparently felt he couldn't be seen much...a shame
@@betpow But that 3 piece suit he wore!
Richard IS there. Someone's handling the top end. None of the others had that range and i'd know that voice anywhere...
I don't believe you.
David Crosby, Gordon Lightfoot and now Robbie Robertson. I grew up listening to their music in the 60s & 70s. It was a real privilege to hear them getting started.
