*The long-requested sequel to the Rare Hunters is finally here! Welcome to Duel Academy with the Slifer Slackers! The biggest change was giving each of us a Starter Deck to work with AND now the winner can take any card from the loser, not just their rarest card specifically (which caused some awkward situations before). Looking forward to seeing you all next time with Cybernetic Revolution! Like last time, we're open to any feedback and changes for the rules, since this isn't entirely set in stone!* 🔥
You guys should have a wheel or something that the loser can spin to get a high rarity card ( that they pulled/won) from the previous series, or something like that.
I think that it would be cool if when you get 3 wins in a row, you go up to the next dorm, and same with going down, so you will go up to ra yellow after 3 wins and if you lose 3 after that, you go back down to red
The Rare Hunters are never done learning and now we're Slifer Slackers! The Lost Millenium is near and dear to my heart but I forgot how weird this set was lol What was your favorite GX era set?
I love the lost millennium because I remember it being the first Sneak Preview my mom took me too. And I loved it. But I think Cybernetic Revolution because I pulled a Cyber Twin Dragon and Cyber Dragon at the Sneak Preview and it caused me to fall in love with the archetype and their art
The aesthetic for the cards in the era and the 5d's era just hits different, the spacing, the placement of text and the color shading felt more aesthetically pleasing.
The Unexpectedly best part of this duel was Alec and Paul fighting over shared custody of Heiroco Sphinx! XD Oh this is gonna be a fun summer at school! But every episode should begin with Alec singing the English GX theme.
In case anyone is wondering, from the Konami database "Even if Dummy Golem is flipped face-up by battle and destroyed by that battle, this effect activates, but the process that switches control is not applied." So Paul would not have gotten a monster here.
Yes. I believe the reasoning is that since it's already destroyed, period, it's not a valid monster to switch control with, even though it's technically still on the field when the effect activates and resolves. It's like how Graydles become equips on crashing instead of just swapping control, the rules don't allow for destroyed monsters to stay monsters on the field in any non-flip-effect case without either going somewhere else first or not being monsters anymore.
Came down in the comments as soon as this happened. I remember playing against my brother as a kid thinking this card was broken and then being so mad when I got back into Yugioh later and realized we had it wrong all along 😂
Yeah as soon as they asked i came to check if anyone knew. I think technically flip effects happen after the cards been destroyed. But my yugioh ruling havent been used in 5 years lol
SO GLAD THIS SERIES IS BACK! One thing, can you give us a preview of your decks before you duel? I like hearing your strategies. Anyway thank you so much for bringing this series back and I look forward to the next installment :)
This is honestly what I miss, and what modern yugioh is lacking. The back and forth of the game, the fact that one card can change the whole game, this is the game I fell in love with
There was a misplay with Dummy Golem in game two. 23:00 *If "Dummy Golem" is attacked, flipped, and destroyed by damage calculation, its effect is not applied because it is destroyed. So control does not switch.* I believe the interaction at 24:30 was correct due to this ruling. *If your opponent takes control of your monster with “Snatch Steal”, and you activate the Flip Effect of a “Charmer” to take it back, you keep control while the “Charmer” is face-up on the field.*
Glad you brought the series back! Also, the Dummy Golem play you asked about, if it's destroyed by battle as it is flipped, it cannot switch, just like when Penguin Soldier is attacked and destroyed, it can't return itself to the hand.
then Man-Eater Big wouldn’t be able to resolve (and we all know how that ruling works). what keeps the effect in check would be the opponent selecting which monster switches control, meaning they can strategically give them the monster they don’t need or can plan around (unless they only have one). The reason Penguin Soldier wouldn’t return to the hand is BECAUSE it needs to be destroyed after resolution is destroyed by battle. You could think of it as technically resolving and going to your hand, but it would instantly be destroyed since it was destroyed be battle and sent to the GY, so there is no point in going the extra step. So in this case, control would switch as the card is not sent to the GY until it’s effect resolves, but is instantly destroyed after as it was battled. But it’s a good question about how Earth Charmer interacts with what happened. If the monster is yours, but your opponent took permenant control of it in the field THEN got it back with Earth Charmer…would it go back to the owner or the player who had permenant control of it as long as it remained on the field? From what i looked up, as long as that monster remains on the field and isn’t returned to the hand or sent to the GY, control WOULD revert to who had permenant control of it, even if the player isn’t the original owner.
@@Vanitas42 from everywhere I can see online, I get the same result: “Remember that Flip Effect happen after Damage Calculation. So, first "Dummy Golem" is destroyed by battle and your opponent takes 2200 damage (from "Dragon's Rage"). Afterwards, "Dummy Golem" is already destroyed, so it cannot switch itself; the effect resolves without effect, and no monsters change control. This is covered in Card Rulings:Dummy Golem: If "Dummy Golem" is attacked, flipped, and destroyed by damage calculation, its effect is not applied because it is destroyed. So control does not switch.”
@@SMIFSON had to test it out in Master Duel because it tends to resolve effects before anything gets destroyed (hence my understanding). According to Konami’s own rulings, you are right. The opponent selects the monster as per the effect, but control does not change if it is to be destroyed.
@@Vanitas42 it’s alright man, I play with these old school cards all the time, cards that haven’t been errata’d and given PSCT, most of the time they seem good but are terrible, like Dummy Golem
There's nothing I wanted more at 8 years old than to attend Duel Academy and get one of those sick blue jackets. It'll be really sweet seeing you guys move into this era of YuGiOh. When archetypes and combos really started to come around, but well before they went out of control. Hopefully we'll even see some sweet fusion action.
This is actually really exciting for 2 reasons: 1. I just really like this series, in general 2. I actually got out of Yugioh initially right at the onset of the GX era, pretty much missed the whole thing, so I will be interested to see the kind of cards that were popular and good around this time, since I didn't come back until the 5D's era.
Same. I left and the tail end of DM so I have no memories or nostalgia for these cards so it’s like opening old new cards. Kinda a “what if…?” for me. :)
23:34 no, you did not resolve it right. If Dummy Golem is attacked while in face-down defense position, its effect does not resolve because Dummy Golem will be getting destroyed and thus you cannot resolve its effect to switch control of monsters. This means Paul never should’ve gotten the ‘free’ Hieracosphinx. If that’s actually the way it worked, Dummy Golem would’ve been a pretty solid card back in the day that could’ve seen some play. Can you imagine? For only a Set, you can basically steal one of your opponent’s top monsters 😮
Glad to see you guys are back with this series. Bit of a story: my mom bought a bunch of Lost Millennium pack from CVS (on closeout) and I pulled an UTR Ancient Gear Golem. I still have it to this day.
23:00 Dummy Golem actually doesn't work because the golem is destroyed before its effect triggers, and since no one controls the golem, its impossible for it to switch control. as for the charmer interaction, I'm not sure
So awesome to see the return of the series. Are 3 Polymerization a part of your collections? I feel that an Enrollment Bonus for Duel Academy, Slifer Red or not, includes 3 Polymerization.
Loved the Rare Hunters so this will be a cool series as well. About the Dummy Golem thing, nope it does not go off if it's attacked and would be destroyed after damage calc.
The only thing I'm going to say, as far as rulings go, is that technically dummy golem's effect should not have activated to begin with, because it would have been destroyed by Battle immediately before the effect resolves so there would be no monster to switch control of in the first place. The only reason I know this is because I saw it happen in duel links
This is the ruling for the Dummy Golem effect, If "Dummy Golem" is attacked, flipped, and destroyed by damage calculation, its effect is not applied because it is destroyed. So control does not switch. Hope that helps!
*Megarock Dragon* was fun to play when I had the rock/flip effect archetype deck. *GX* was certainly a phase for many through the 2000s. *Elemental Heroes* were my favorite introduction by the anime series.
@TeamAPS "If "Dummy Golem" is attacked, flipped, and destroyed by damage calculation, its effect is not applied because it is destroyed. So control does not switch."
using physical cards in a set progression series is WAY cooler than what cimoooooooo and gage are doing with using a pack simulator and DB, in my opinion. keep up the great content guys!
A cool idea would be to have cards from Rare Hunters “for sale” in a card shop of sorts, where they could be bought in “packs” like the booster pack stand in the anime
I'm more than hyped that you guys are doing this. This was my generation of yugioh growing up & to know we're doing the rare hunters gimic with it is all I hoped to continue from last time. I'm here for it, it's time to get your game on!
@23:35 the Dummy golem activates after damage calculation, and it must switch places, But since it is marked for destruction it cannot switch places as it's next location would be the GY.
Glad to see this classic series back. Love it! That first duel felt like a real episode from the show, all the way down the wire with a final plot. Well done, guys, I enjoyed this episode!
So nice to see that the hunters went to therapy to treat the effects of Master Marik's brainwashing, and enrolled in duel academy :')))) That's some major character development
I noticed the Dummy Golem's effect and I had to put it into question. I didn't believe the effect would work, but I had to look it up to be certain, and according to the wiki, since Dummy Golem was destroyed, its effect cannot be applied, nullifying the control shift. As for Aussa's effect, since the controller of the card was Paul at the time of Aussa's effect taking place, once she is removed from the field, yes, the Sphinx would return to Paul's side of the field.
Always had an affinity for GX era's card art that featured human characters. The lighting used in the art, and the designs themselves gave them a much cleaner look than in previous sets.
So rulings wise dummy golem was already marked for destruction so control of it shouldnt have switched with Hiercosphynx, weird ruling but you either need a way to prevent it from being destroyed by that battle or flip it outside of combat for the effect to resolve properly. Under the accepted game state tho when aussa flips she gains control of an earth monster until she leaves the field so when she was destroyed monster would return to Pauls field.
Some years ago a friend of mine used to use Dummy Golem, however after playing against him in a simulator this is what i found out Dummy golem cannot use it's control changing effect if it gon die by that battle, I guess it's kinda like penguin soldier beeing unable to return itself to the hand if it dies.
24:30 Aussa the Earth Charmer, I don't know if your card has the full text but it says "FLIP: Target 1 EARTH monster your opponent controls; take control of that target while this card is face-up on the field." so Paul does get the monster back, it was the correct play it seems from my end.
I'm not sure what plans you guys have for the series but this is beyond hype! Suggesstion since we're at the academy though: is it possible to have the other boys come in as 'professors'? Example as Trell coming in as a crowler clone and testing you both seperately for bonus prizes? Like a bonus pack or a card from their archetype but only if you beat them?maybe they use other structure decks that would have come out around a pack release. That way (if structure decks are cheaper) you can have a 'test' episode before a new box opening. Not trying to change your game plan, just give ideas for the academy theme of this season
I love you guys and how you guys work so hard to make videos I just want to let you guys know you guys are appreciated and cool .ps. get your game on 😁
Back during these days, I played a full on Rock deck built off the bones of the Invincible Fortress deck, and Heiracosphinx is basically a staple, as it makes everything else in the deck work as good as it can. Can't fully explain the amount of times that it saved my bacon by stopping an attack on a Medusa Worm, Dummy Golem, and so on. It was pretty decent back then. I *still* play a deck based on the concept of a strong defense, still using some of those old cards. And of course dumping a massive Megarock late in the game was always funny.
03-06 was the best era of card games, video games, and just all things nerd in general. What a time to be a kid and just soak it all in. Thank you Team APS for taking me back to a simpler time with these videos.
In the spirit of the first GX episode (Yugi giving Jaden a card), it would have been fun for each of you to select up to 5 cards from your original rare hunters pool and then your opponent selects 2 you get to include in your GX card pool. First generation giving something to the next. Also, one additional rule, in order to avoid someone taking a card just to cripple the opponent's strategy (and never even using it), a rule could be made that the card the winner takes has to be included in the next episode's deck. Also, I kinda...sorta...have s1 and 2 of GX AI upscaled to FHD if you need it for your videos.
I absolutely love when Paul acts like an anime character. For comedic purposes I think Alec should just act like a normal person/ straight manwhile Paul goes hard as an anime protage
I'm excited for the GX era of this series, but I gotta say the Dummy Golem play wasn't correct. Because it switches control of itself and an enemy's monster, it would be destroyed before the swap and the effect would not go through. As an avid Tag Force fan I learned this through error. Fun episode though!
The magic cylinder play feels like it was right out of the anime. The protagonist is about to lose, the suspense has been built, but has had the answer on the field the whole time, revealing it to win the game
I think this is my favorite era of Yu-Gi-Oh. Both for the anime and the card game. The games were still kinda slow and had a more back and forth, it wasn't constant extra deck spam and negate upon negate, but there were actually archetypes and combos you could pull off and your hand didn't brick as much as in early early Yugioh.
You guys got Clayman and I don't have even a single copy of him yet, I find that hilarious! My HERO deck is all like "We got Solid Soldier, we don't need you, Clayman! Get up on outta here!!!" 😂
in duel 2 dummy golem wouldn't have been destroyed, it's control was given to the opp in return for hiracosphinx so dummy doesn't get destroyed because replay occurs due to field change. when using aussa to take hira back, after aussa is destroyed, hira returns to the player that controlled it last
Awesome! I loved Rare Hunters and it's great to see it back (under a new name). The starter decks were a great choice to make sure each player has a solid base to work with... though it does kind of diminish the excitement of pulling Brain Control when both players have one anyway. I mentioned this back in Rare Hunters but it's even more relevant now - I really think both of you should get three Polymerizations. GX is big on Fusion monsters and it'll be really disappointing if neither of you can summon them! Looking forward to the next episode! CRV was one of my favourite sets. I hope one of you can pull off Des Croaking! (By the way, Dummy Golem's effect doesn't activate during the damage step, so that Hieracosphinx trade wouldn't work. You did get the Aussa interaction right, though, as far as I know?)
Sadly, Dummy Golem does *not* get its effect when it's attacked and destroyed. Aussa would get to take Hieracosphinx though, so you got that right! That's the fun of playing in person, though. Getting to have things like this that would never happen in a simulator is a lot of fun and lets us learn by experience.
Looked up the rulings on Dummy Golem, and the rulings were that if it is attacked and destroyed it doesn't activate. Essentially it needs to be on the board to give control of itself to your opponent, and it's effect doesn't resolve until the battle is completed, so it can't activate its effect until it is already in the GY.
i am so glad rare hunters is getting a sequel series. as someone who has never really dueled and only collected cards, its interesting to see how each set actually played . thank you guys for making these series'
This was the last era I played competitively as a kid, I'm so excited to see what things you guys pull. Still gave my Champion Pack 6 Elemental Hero Stratos
About dummy golem... Back in the day flip effects didnt happen until AFTER battle was resolved (including monster destruction) so dummy golem only works if it survives battle or is fliped manually.

Idk why I found that so funny. 😂
This was a very welcome upload, coming in clutch while at work! Thanks for your hard work Team APS, my son and I are SO gonna enjoy this!
24:30 Aussa the Earth Charmer, I don't know if your card has the full text but it says "FLIP: Target 1 EARTH monster your opponent controls; take control of that target while this card is face-up on the field." so Paul does get the monster back, it was the correct play it seems from my end.
Welp, looks like I’m getting back into YuGiOh now!!! Amazing channel, amazing series.
The way you used dummy golem is such a Slifer Slacker way to read cards
Hold up. You chose to create a series named Slifer Slackers, and you didn't think contact me? Lol. This is actually pretty cool.
I love you guys and how you guys work so hard to make videos I just want to let you guys know you guys are appreciated and cool .ps. get your game on 😁
HOLY SHIT! The series is back!!
First off, that intro is 🔥 🔥!
Secondly, I'm 1000% excited to see this, loved rare hunters!
Paul: disses ookazi
Also Paul: gets ookazi'd to death
Fairly sure Dummy Golem can't switch monsters if it's being destroyed.
I remember getting this set as a child when it released, it's so cool seeing you guys using this set "properly"
Gonna throw down a face down and get my game on!!!
SLIFER SLACKERS FINALLY!
The magic cylinder play feels like it was right out of the anime. The protagonist is about to lose, the suspense has been built, but has had the answer on the field the whole time, revealing it to win the game
Well, I am glad this is a spinoff of the Rare Hunter series and not some wagering over who's the ultimate Yu-Gi-Oh duelist.
Slifer Slackers Standings:
Paul: 0-1 (6-9)
Alec: 1-0 (9-6)
Happy to see the sequel.
Can't wait to see who graduates from the Academy.
Get up on outta here!!!" 😂
in duel 2 dummy golem wouldn't have been destroyed, it's control was given to the opp in return for hiracosphinx so dummy doesn't get destroyed because replay occurs due to field change.
when using aussa to take hira back, after aussa is destroyed, hira returns to the player that controlled it last
So happy this is back! Thank you guys for making this happen! Hopefully we can help make the ROI interesting for the channel on this series 💪🏻
I love the idea of a couple Rare Hunters being so bad at their job that Marik kicks them out and literally sends them to duel school.
I was relly missing rare hunters, these series came like a fresh breeze!
I love whenever Paul speaks Alec just DRAW
2:36 funny how a perfect description of the card is the first word of its name
Im glad your switching to taking whatever card the winner wants
Digging the use of the Impossible Victory theme for this episode - most dramatic theme in GX :)
Love this spiritual successor series! The part at the end where you choose what card to steal could be called the extra credit portion!
The smug "battle entered duelist" is such a catchphrase lmfao
Sadly, Dummy Golem does *not* get its effect when it's attacked and destroyed. Aussa would get to take Hieracosphinx though, so you got that right!
That's the fun of playing in person, though. Getting to have things like this that would never happen in a simulator is a lot of fun and lets us learn by experience.
It's hilarious that kaiba made the lowest ranked dorm slipher red, a yugi card, making his card obelisk the namesake of the best dorm. 😆
This series is pretty awesome. Good to see that the guys brought it back because GX is so badass.
Omg I’m in tears I love this so much I love you guys holy crap gx is so nostalgic to me then og yugioh
Jaden is the best main character
I actually just started watching GX for the first time. Watchin y’all had really got me back into yugioh after all this time.
This was the last era I played competitively as a kid, I'm so excited to see what things you guys pull. Still gave my Champion Pack 6 Elemental Hero Stratos
Alec really channeling his inner protagonist opening all 3 games with normal summoning sparkman
18:52 Alec is a real GX fan saying that line, lmao!
About dummy golem...
Back in the day flip effects didnt happen until AFTER battle was resolved (including monster destruction) so dummy golem only works if it survives battle or is fliped manually.
That's right! Not sure how that slipped our minds
