      It's very cool indeed. I would love to see some of the creators involved with it branch out more in terms of variety. I know "Magic player rates YGO cards" is obviously how you get the biggest audiences... but also I'd love to see more stuff for games like Elestrals, FFTCG, Flesh & Blood, etc. This is one of the coolest ways to actually learn about all the diverse card games that are out there.

    I've drafted the Battle Packs a couple of times and am pretty sure that in a vacuum, I would take Raigeki. It's just ahead of the power level of most other cards and there are few if any graveyard effects that justify Graceful Charity for me. Seeing this amount of cards matters a lot less with the starkly reduced emphasis on combo gameplay and Raigeki is very consistently good.

    • @drewbabe
      @drewbabe 23 дні тому

      Agreed, in a draft format, you can't guarantee that GC is going to let you actually plus off it, while Raigeki will definitely be a plus in card economy. It's all about what you are able to assemble, of course, but GY synergy isn't going to be nearly as strong as it could because of the draft format.

      @tartantulakid666 23 дні тому +4

      For a guy that had an entire series about drafting, cimo sure sucks at drafting. I have no clue how he thinks that raigeki is worse than graceful. And i am scratching my head why that itaqua card is better than cylinder. Most boards in draft are 1-2 monsters anyways so taking off 1/5th of your opponents life is very powerful

      @Ollig999 23 дні тому +7

      @@tartantulakid666etaqua is so much more versatile. I think it’s far and away a better card because it’s basically T roar that can be removal when you need it to be. Cylinder buys you one attack and generally doesn’t do enough damage to swing a game one way or another.

    The interesting thing to me about watching this web of videos across everyone’s channels is that it feels like Hearthstone is always in the middle mechanically between Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh. Yu-Gi-Oh’s traps are a lot like Hearthstone’s spells. ‘Every monster has Taunt’ helped both Voxy and Rarran understand the game; but because Hearthstone actually has mana it makes evaluating cards between that and Magic a lot easier too, and their similar power/attack and toughness/defence stats and life totals as well. It’s neat. I enjoy these videos a lot.

      That's more of a situational thing than a common thing. I think Chalice is far more superior in modern due to how strong effects are these days. Back then, YGO effects weren't overly powerful but lance is especially great for sealed/Edison time. There are some devastating board wipes and removal cards that is more essential to protect your monster, like when I played Cyber dragons, I always have to power bond for Cyber Twin and going for game, I always have forbidden Lance and dresses to protect my guys going for game.

    For Raiko and the Penguin, it's hard to make a compparison for these 2 because they came each in a different format, i can assume in a chaos or lightsworn deck of that era it would make raiko the better choice, but having a monster to bounce 2 cards or even recycle itself and bounce 1 for 1 and repeat that process makes penguin soldier also a formidable card of that time.

      @@Sinzari a big factor in this is very much the set you're drafting to begin with. in a battle pack that sticks to cards suited to old school yugioh, with a lot of normal summons and not much else, then yeah banking on coming across a treeborn or premature in your draft to take full use of graceful is perhaps not the best idea. but if you're working with a set based around more modern gameplay, even just early 5ds era, then suddenly you can reliably find stuff like crane crane, quillbolt hedgehog, or background dragon that can dig themselves or other monsters out of the gy as their one thing, and those are likely going to be your primary way to access whatever extra deck cards popped up in your draft
      combine that with format-appropriate backrow with gy interaction like breakthrough skill and ghost of a grudge, and now the card selection and discard of graceful charity is a _powerful_ asset for any deck looking for strong playstyles that can fall to the wayside due to the inconsistency inherent to draft

    My picks, chosen before the verdict of each pair, from a person that hasn't played sealed before or played yugioh since 2017:
    Witch (a beat stick could help, but i'm optimistic for future monsters being higher value)
    Raigeki (this early, idk how much value i can get out of charity, so it is a strong safe pick)
    Windstorm (cylinder does some neat burn, but windstorm protects an entire turn and may help you kill a strong monster, now being in defense)
    Penguin Soldier (this could bite me in the butt if there are strong continuous spell/traps. pretty 50/50 on this one. ryko can take me out of a bad situation 100%, penguin soldier gives me time and it depends on me having someone to follow up with to get ahead, but it stalls well and should get rid of higher level monsters)
    Caius (removal)
    Cyber Dragon (i need beat sticks, the frog would be better if i could build an entire monarch deck? maybe in tandem. immediate value vs long term value. also, the condition of no spell/trap could be troublesome)
    SNATCH STEAL (premature would have been neat with frog and charity)
    Forbidden chalice (i actually changed this one, when it was mentioned that it could be chained to an activated effect) (should have stuck to my guns too)
    Fiendish chain (i wrote an entire paragraph on slime, it needs a highly specific envirionment to be better, but if i picked chalice to stop effects, i'm picking chain too)
    Solemn judgment (i knew it was going to be here as soon as i heard counter card trap, lol. gotta stop that game changing effect my enemy may play)

    Relating to the Raigeki vs Graceful Charity discussion, I think there is one crucial difference between MTG and Yugioh that kind of went unmentioned but does somewhat impact why draw is generally better than board wipe - unlike MTG, Yugioh has a _limited field._ We may not have to spend anything to play cards, but we're limited by how many cards we can have _on the field_ - you can't play a Spell Card if you have 5 Traps set, for instance; you can't have more than 5 monsters on the field outside of the variables of Link Zones, et cetera. In the _very niche_ situation where your opponent has managed to do the Link Summon shenanigans needed to take both Link Zones, the maximum number of cards Raigeki can destroy is 7 - and when these two cards came out, it was just 5. In Magic, your opponent could have boards with 5 or 6 actual creatures and then potentially _dozens_ of tokens, they don't have a limited number of Monster Zones like we do - so dropping a Raigeki on a board like that could destroy _dozens_ of threats simultaneously. Because Yugioh has a limited number of Zones, it limits the maximum value of a board wipe, while card draw is _never bad_ and - as was discussed - the Graveyard might as well be a second hand, and Graceful Charity is almost a flat +3 card advantage in a lot of decks.

    not only is removal in many different forms much more prevalent, youre never getting more than 6 monsters, and realistically its probably gonna be closer to 2 or 3
    meanwhile in magic you can get any number of creatures on the field. tokens as well are pretty valuable in magic, both to chump block as well as threatening damage if you have more 1/1s than your opponent has blockers

    "Ryko is way better" in a sealed environment!? Where people are actually liable to have tribute monsters out? Where you can't guarantee you want those top 3 cards in your graveyard? Buddy I've dueled against penguin soldier he's a nightmare for ruining extra deck monsters and anything that cost anything to summon AND anything with an equip spell. Penguin Soldier ruins snatch steal, can bounce itself for renewal, can ruin any monster that was a big play and you choose single removal with a cost that might really hurt in this environment??? Over an effect that is always useful if your opponent has any monsters, which they're gonna have?

      Soldier only bounces Monsters, Ryko can destroy ANY card and has extra qualities that make it better (Being a light). Ryko can deal with Tsukiomi, penguin soldier dies for free to it. Or even bouncing a Monarch can be worse if they have a treeborn like monster.
      That favours the balance to Ryko for versatility. Also this is all old cards when boss monsters didn't have much in the department of protection or floating.

      In sealed, how many extra deck monsters is someone gonna be able to run and get out for you to penguin soldier?

      @@FFKonoko it's also an environment with very crucial spells/traps and not many ways to get them back. If Ryko did like, discard two from the hand or look at the top 5 on your deck discard 3 then shuffle I'd say yeah it's probably better but it being full random creates a scenario where you risk losing substantially better outs than Ryko just to use Ryko, while Penguin Soldier will always do his job without ruining anything else you're trying to do

      @@awqweird Yugioh doesn't have that kind of format but in the closest format you can get (Goat) Charity is still better at the highest level, you only really summon 1 monster per turn so raigeki is less a boardsweeper and more a 1-for1 removal card, Goat is all about trading cards and playing patient until you can get a big swing turn going which isn't something that raigeki does well, compare it to e.g: metamorphosis or BLS who both give you a monster and remove something when raigeki only really removes 1 monster, sometimes 2

    There is no way a Graceful Charity is better than Raigeki in a limited format. It's not even remotely close.
    It's broken in constructed specifically because you can have a lot of synergies with the discards. Graceful Charity was not that insane of a card before Discard/Graveyard synergies were popular, while Raigeki is the single best card in the entire 20000 card pool of Yugioh in a limited format, better even than Pot of Greed. Card draw in limited is not nearly as good as constructed, because you're drawing pretty crappy cards on average. If you had 30 bad cards in your deck and 10 good cards, you'd rather have the 10 good cards do something, than have the 10 good cards all be card draw that draws your bad cards. Also, Raigeki is only unbanned now in constructed Yugioh because of all the protections monsters have. In Yugioh around the time period of the battle packs, Raigeki was absolutely batshit busted, even in constructed.
    EDIT: I feel like a lot of people forget that this is talking about IN A LIMITED SETTING. No shit, Graceful Charity is infinitely better in modern constructed Yugioh, it's like a +4 for free while Raigeki can't even kill a single monster most of the time. In 2010 limited Yugioh though, Graceful Charity was a +0 while Raigeki was a blowout that won the game immediately half the time it was played, and set you very far ahead the other half.

    • @RunicSigils
      @RunicSigils 23 дні тому +1

      The only way you could possibly think that it's better is if you're thinking about it from a Magic standpoint where you're not limited by summons.
      When you can only have six monsters at most, and some of them can't even be destroyed by card effects, if at all, Raigeki is pretty bad.
      There's a reason before anyone was really that into competitive that both cards were limited and one of them is not now and the other remains banned.
      This is not magic where you can have as many creatures as you want on the field. It is just not that good here.
      In general, it is a good card, there's no denying that, but better than Graceful in any way at any time? Never.
      Even the more powerful version of it in Lightning Storm - which is so good, it has warped the way people play their first turn in particular - is definitely not better than Graceful.

    • @moonjelly5
      @moonjelly5 23 дні тому

      @@RunicSigilsLightning Storm is only better because it can also be Feather Duster at home in addition to being Raigeki at your poor cousin's home. Its monster destruction effect is strictly worse than Raigeki as it requires no face up cards and only takes out attack position monsters, unlike Raigeki which destroys everything with no conditions.

      It wasn't popular before gy shenanigans but it was still absolutely busted. It just took people rethinking how to play to get them to look at graceful charity. Especially in old yugioh it was super easy to recover from a board wipe. Same in limited formats because of the lower level of power. So no, graceful is better than raigeki

    • @PallMeTo-o9r
      @PallMeTo-o9r 23 дні тому

      I think Graceful is overall a better card because it's proactive, and will be a good card no matter what you pick up on your draft. Sure, Raigeki is probably the best removal in a draft format, but Graceful just lets you dig deeper into your deck and find the other "broken" cards you got in your draft (the ones that a lot of the time win you the game). Graceful can even get you a slightly worse breaker, like Fissure or Hammer Shot, which may not be enough to fully break your opponent's board, but just being able to dig 3 cards deeper into your deck lets you have so much more agency in the game, while a card like Raigeki is a lot of the time going to trade with 1 or 2 monsters.
      TLDR: There is a case to be made for both, but on a vacuum, the agency Graceful gives you is much better then Raigeki

    • @Sinzari
      @Sinzari 23 дні тому

      @@soulssurvivor3455 It absolutely was not busted, if you play Goat format you would know that. The only times Graceful Charity feel great are when you have a Night Assailant, Thunder Dragon, or Sinister Serpent in hand. Most of the time if you don't have those, you'd end up holding Graceful Charity till you draw them.

    Seeing as we're grabbing more and more MTG players for these series, Cimo, I'd recommend explaining trap cards to MTG players by comparing them to MTG's Foretell mechanic. Aside from the eccentricities of each game's unique mechanics, they're functionally as close as any two things between these games can be.
    For reference, Foretell is an ability that some cards have where you can pay a small amount of mana and exile them face-down, then you're allowed to cast them on any later turn. Usually there's a bonus effect for doing so, or the Foretell casting cost might be cheaper, or maybe you're just paying the mana in installments rather than all at once, but fundamentally it's almost the same as a trap card: put it face down, can't use it this turn, but it's ready as soon as the turn passes.
