Hallelujah - a sharpening video which is just about getting the job done easily. I say this as someone who has made a fair bit of money from honing razors in my time, and if you aren't going to shave your face or plane birdseye maple with a blade there's no need for faffing around. If you are, there is! Hope things work out well for the young 'un.

I use the work sharp field sharpener, it is diamond based so you can use it on the harder stuff as wel ( s90v, cpm-20cv, m390).
It gets my cold steel 4max in 20cv beard shaving sharp and that thing is as thick as an axe.

Does it actually need sharpening (removing metal) or just honing (cleaning up the edge)? At work I get the edge back by rubbing it on cardboard; works on low-end stainless too. Yes, I did enjoy the video.

Took me a little bit but I got it. Maintaining the consistency of the angle is my main problem, but I guess it will come with time and practice. But what encouraged me and had me going was the simplicity of your advice. I was beginning to think that knife sharpening was too complicated and you demonstrate it isn't. Thank you.

Great video Paddy. Lovely demonstration knife. It's nice to demonstrate knife sharpening for people who are new to knives, or more correctly new to sharpening.
I recently sharpened a pocket knife from my childhood. It was just a carbon steel Sabre 2 blade made in Japan knife that cost me $1.99 back in 1967. It sharpened up so quickly & easily with a little Smiths pocket sharpener. A few strokes on the strop brought it to hair shaving sharp. The whole process took less than 5 minutes, and I wasn't in a hurry.

I'm mostly using exactly the same items, sometimes i use the DC4 from fallkniven because it just needs a bit more work and if a knife is really dull or the edge is damaged then i take out my Lansky fixed angle system. Glad to see i'm not the only one who doesn't have an expensive sharpening system and still get pretty good results. Thank you Stephen.

That’s my beef on a lot of internet sharpeners too. You don’t need a new edge very often. A butcher I know has a saying that’s basically each day on the steel each month on the hone and a new edge on the stone for Christmas. Sounded better when he said it out loud!

Great video I agree, I just touch up my knives on a strop after each use or if they need to be sharpened I have a Diamond stone by DMT that I can sharpen freehand to a sharp paper cutting edge , sometimes I use a ceramic rod too . It really is not difficult once you practice on edge profile you will be able to hand sharpen at home or in the field with ease.

When I was a little boy I remember seeing my Grandmother put an edge on her little paring knife with just a little brown looking stone that she wet with a little water. God only knows how many potatoes and vegetables that little knife peeled for the cooking pot. It takes a little practice to sharpen but, a little bit goes a long way. Most do more than you need to. They push to hard when you don’t have too; It just takes being careful and checking the feel of the edge. Knowing when to stop is the hardest part to learn. There all kinds of handy sharpening sticks you just have to learn to use them. I have a collection of sharpeners some make easier to sharpen knives if you read the directions. If I want to take off the least amount of metal is what I use some for and have some powered ones for shaping too. Most times the little simple one is all you need.✨🥔✨🔪

Always being so nervous about making sure I sharpen a knife properly, I bought all kinds of stones and whatnot and got super finicky about trying to sharpen my Swiss Army knife my wife bought me years ago. When she bought me that knife, she bought me the same sharpener. It’s still in the box. After watching this video, I feel much more confident that I can sharpen my daily driver, AND I feel like a fool for leaving that wonderful sharpener in the box for so long.

My old man sharpens his knife on anything around, often a stone gate post. It makes his knife ugly as hell, but it's just a tool to him for cutting baling string etc. When I commented on it being a "notchy" edge he handed me the scythe and scythe stone, told me to sharpen it, then mow the little pasture. Apparently a notchy edge can cut pretty well!
He uses an arkansas oil stone for his hunting knife though.

You do know this stuff, but your angle seemed a bit too high on that pen when you first started. That steep of an angle is more suited for bushcraft with a scandigrind.
Also stropping is precise business, it can "make it or break it" so to say. The leather is soft and wraps around the edge rounding it off if you use the same angle as with the pen. Bringing you back to square one. Just lay the blade flat on the strop and use light pressure to get the edge against the surface.
