I do not care how your hands look or physical appearance , it is the good warm hearted person you are that brings joy to knife collectors with your enjoyable videos. Thank you.
Paddy another fantastic video for the people out there that's starting out camping 🏕️ and want to get there Swiss army knife back to cutting edge sharp paddy i love the German Messer i think I've got the very older version of the Messer ⚓ a fantastic work knife i really like it PPP thanks for sharing this one with us merci. 👍🏻
Thank you for this video, Paddy. I appreciate how you encourage us not to stress too much over angles, but to get it close. Very important for beginners to understand that they will still achieve a good working edge, while gaining experience along the way. Slainte!
It's a great affordable option.one tip, never let your knife go dull use the white ceramic after use .just a couple of stroke keeps them in good condition.atb paddy. 👍☘️
I think the Lansky block is a great practical sharpening set up, I mainly sharpen free hand with ruby stone and strop but I just purchased the Lansky block today and can't wait to get it and see how it goes. That Otter is beautiful the anchor shield is just fantastic.
If you can only afford one knife sharpener for pocket knives you picked a good one. I have one like yours; it is called an A.G. Russell field sharpener by Lohman. It uses the same type rods as yours does. I have taken mine with me from Quebec to Alaska and New Brunswick and it has been 150 miles from the Arctic Circle. If you can’t get a sharp edge using this sharpener there is little hope for you. Paddy try using mineral oil for your hands it works pretty good for dry skin. Baby oil is just mineral oil with fragrance added. I use it for knives too. It works wonderful for restoring bone and horn knife covers too. ✨🍀✨🥔🔪
Hey Paddy, I use the smiths 3 in 1 sharper, and it’s terrific. Very similar to the Lansky, but the ceramic rods are 3 sided- edged, flat, and round. Also has a conventional diamond plate, carbide v, and rubber strop all built into it. It can do it all, and is no bigger than your Lansky. Runs about $20, and keeps all my knives like razors, even the recurves on the round stick side. Everyone should have one of these, and it’s small and portable too. Tutorial vids are on UA-cam as well. All the best to you and yours!
Thank you so much for this. I am brand new to sharpening and all I hear is I need 5 waterstones or I need to buy Arkansas oil whetstones. I am a man on a budget thag just wants to keep his edc pockets and fixed knives sharp
This is a basic, but really effective sharpener. I use it mostly for my kitchen knives as a hone. I only sharpen them when new, to set the edge. After that it’s a weekly hone and nothing else. Keeps them fresh. Only thing is, there’s no hand guard for your off hand, so take care. Draw a freshly sharpened knife Omer the back of your thumb, and you’ll remember it!
I suffer from eczema on my hands also as I work in a very caustic environment, I swear by O’Keefes working hands, I put it on about six times a day, and it really does help
Absolutely, if your edge is smart, but it isn't cutting like it used to, a strop is all you'll need. It's amazing how strops have just fallen by the wayside, when they are the most useful tool in maintaining your knives.😱
No worries about your hands. I've suffered from eczema or psoriasis for most of my life, so I can empathize. What exactly is the little deal you used to clean the rods? I could use one of those (and some diamond rods) for my newly purchased TurnBox. Great video, as always!
I have the cheaper ceramic rods only version of the Lansky turn box. I find it works well for any of my budget steel knives, its not ideal for any of my super steel knives though. I use my Lansky guided diamond stone set for that task, however...
My sharpening skills go back to seeing my father who owned one Arkansas oil stone oiled with 3-1 He sharpened his set of hunting knives once a year. I have similar and since ; .I have bought stones that go up to 10,000 and make my own strops. I have little quicky things also like EZ-Laps and Victorinox plus some kitchen gizmos. The secret is the geometric angle that I can find in my sleep. Study the grip before swinging the bat.
Works as a charm! People have problems with your hands? ehm i don't know what to say, it has never bothered me, because it doesn't matter how you are from the outside and the inside is very pretty.
Probably these kind of sharpening systems, are the best for edc pocket knives. They put a satin finish toothy edge, which if you know what you're doing, can get razor sharp. Thats more than enough sharpness. However, for most larger knives such as fixed blades, this is not as ideal, as if you have a lot of experience using stones. For expensive folders, my opinion is that KME, Lansky, Wicked sharp is the way to go. That being said, any system someone ends up with, stone sharpening and as much experience as he can, is essential, for underrstanding and properly using any other kind of sharpening method.
Hi Stephen, Another fine video... but never feel the need to apologise about your eczema brother... I had mild eczema & a touch of psoriasis occasionally, from a child until my late twenties and rarely can still reoccur, it's not nice and it's bloody irritating sometimes - so I understand 🙏 To those that don't... I say, judge reviewers on their content and not their hands! Thanks for sharing, as always 👍 Atb Gus
Stropping, is again all about keeping the right angle, all the way from start to end of the motion you do with your hand. That's why you have to put the strop on the table. The right way to use a strop on a knife , is to put the blade on the strop, at 1 or 2 degrees less angle, than the angle the edge bevel is sharpened. That and what I said above, about keeping that angle the same all the way, is the only way you properly polish the edge. otherwise, you dull the edge or overconvexing and making the angle larger, at best.
I don't agree on going fast. Also, you have to stop, before the very tip of the blade, touches the rod, to avoid dulling the tip. The more you forget about that, the rounder and duller, the tip of the blade gets. Keeping the same 90 degree vertical angle, at all time, on both sides, is what you have to do, not only to sharpen the edge properly, but also, avoid destroing the edge apex of the blade.
I do not care how your hands look or physical appearance , it is the good warm hearted person you are that brings joy to knife collectors with your enjoyable videos. Thank you.
Thanks mate appreciate it 👍atb paddy
After watching this I finally settled on the Lansky Turnbox and have been quite satisfied with the performance Thanks Paddy

Great video, Paddy. I use one of these to keep my kitchen knives sharp. Does a great job with very little effort.
I like that Lansky Turnbox. If you are extra creative you can glue a piece of leather to the bottom of the Turnbox for a strop.
Great idea mate that would be ideal 👍atb paddy
Thanks for the video Paddy, very helpful
Thanks!! I will follow your recommendation mate.

Great sharpening system! I have the same one and it touches blades up great! 👍
Agree, it`s a fantastic tool.
You are kind to show us the basics. I am kindergarten level sharpener.
Great video. I've always free-hand sharpened but am tempted by this to get consistency, particularly to set the edge. Thanks Paddy!
Thanks for sharing this with us, Sir! Amazing stuff❤️!
Simple and affordable ❤

I had the original lansky croc sticks.
I was very happy with them. 👍🏻
Hey paddy glad to see you're still doing well and nice job! :-)
Well done...thank you.

I prefer my wet stones, but I enjoy a recurve here and there, so I'll need to get some rods to retouch my Cold Steel Raja 2&3, and others.
I like the lansky it's good for honing. 👍
Sharpen little, Strop a lot. That is my philosophy also.
Absolutely, if your edge is smart, but it isn't cutting like it used to, a strop is all you'll need. It's amazing how strops have just fallen by the wayside, when they are the most useful tool in maintaining your knives.😱
I found an old belt razor strop that you attach to the wall - no wood block. Seems to work fine on knives.

Great video. What do you use to clean your rods , mine are black from use and need a good clean.
Try one of those pencil erasers that are in a pen like tube. Works well to remove the black.

What is that you’re using to clean the ceramic rods ?
I use Ajax scouring powder mate for deep clean and an ink rubber for a quick clean
Thanks Paddy .
fyi The Otter received 13 strokes per side on the steel rods and 18 on the ceramics.
No media to smear onto your strop? Terrific-one less item to spend money on.

Great demonstration. What is the grey block used to clean the rods? I don’t think I have seen those before.
There is one similar on Amazon or ebay, lookup: Lansky Eraser Block For Ceramic Crock Stick Sharpening Rods
