And thank you for all the hard work and love that's been put into it! You've made some good changes since I recorded this and I'm stoked to play the final release.
@@alaskanbeard Most of the big recent change are still in the beta, so most people aren't aware of them yet, I hope my futures plan will get up to people expectation on the game ^^
I didn't realize there was actually a named genre for it, but I've been playing Magic Survival for years and loved it. I've been seeing more games like that, which makes me pretty happy. Now I know that they're called reverse bullet hells, so I can find a bunch more to play!! Thank you, and awesome video!
Stumbled upon you from you shameless plug on Reddit. Sooo glad that I did! You've earned my sub. I looked thru your brief catalog and didn't see anything else that got my attention, but I'll be patient and hope for more like this. Thank care my brother-in-beards.
FIRST OF ALL YOUR BEARD IS GREAT!!! I'm almost at your lenght now too, looking good my dude. Also, this is the perfect video, i love this genre but can't be bothered through 50 games on steam. Some of them offer free demos which i really like: My BIGGEST wish is that there will be a RBH/SRV - game to play on console, i want to play on my couch and bed!
Enjoyed the list [found you on reddit after waking up at 3am looking for other RBH's]. I'd really recommend you give Army of Ruin another go, it's getting quick updates and it's my favourite i've tried so far. The game is just nicely polished and they've recently added cool stuff like charms. As a fan of Ziggurat it has that similar polish and nice graphical style that is just pleasing to me. The closest thing to compare is maybe soulstone survivors, but that game gives off a messy, unclear and asset flippy vibe. Thanks man! Need to give Rogue Gen another proper try as it initially didn't hook me in my early RBH phase while trying a lot of games.
I love the price point of these games too, rarely going above 20 bucks, most of the time below 10 even. In the end they have to compete against Vampire Survivors.
Bullet Heavens, and or RBH's, have been my jam for several months now. I love them. We discuss coffee quite a bit on my channel and these RBH's are some of the greatest games ever for multitasking. WASD with the left hand and coffee with the right.
Hey, came from your reddit post! I don't know about roguelike but if it's reverse bullet hell, I just played Yet Another Zombie Survivors, it's really good that made me search for another game like it then I stumbled on your post!
Thanks dude, you reminded me I already owned soulstone survivors (I got it on sale in a bundle with death must die and forgot all about it lol) and I bought Hell Escape after watching this.
Good video, man. From a viewer's perspective, I would separate going on tangents and make those into separate videos. Other than that, this is a must see video on RBH imho.
I just stumbled over this video and instantly subscribed. you put more effort in this, than necessary! Other, bigger youtubers just throw together a lazy Tier-List without any gameply, Have you tried Heretics Fork? It is a *ahem* Roguelite Bullet Heaven Deck Builder Tower Defense without movement. Great aesthetics, even greater soundtrack, cheap, finished. There really isnt a reason to not check it out!
Just heard the comment at the end about a Hades type game with auto fire possibly coming out. You must have discovered Death Must Die by now I bet since it's been 11 months since this vid came out.
Nice video. I Personally, I have to disagree with Rogue Genesia. The branching paths don't really prompt any interesting decisions, so feel pretty needless rather than adding strategy. The moment to moment gameplay isn't interesting or particularly satisfying. Whereas when you play VS, you feel insanely powerful, with every visual and sound effect feeling addictively satisfying. The sound design is the weakest part. I dislike the sound effects like picking up orbs or leveling up, and then music is very weak. I literally play the game on mute. But like you said, there's a demo so anyone can try for themselves.
This is a high quality video, you deserve more subscribers! I wish there was a good PC port for Magic Survival, since combination magic was added that game is easily #1 for me. There's something about the simplicity of the graphics that I really enjoy, and the magics are so satisfying. I'm also curious to hear your thoughts on DRG Survivor. I recently started playing the normal DRG and been having a blast. Survivor looks fun but it seems a bit too removed from RBH (bullet heaven?) to me. I have a piece of criticism for you as well. This might be subjective so take it with a grain of salt, but as a guy with a beard myself, I'd highly recommend going for a different name if you want to grow your channel and establish yourself. For some reason there are a lot of dudes who seem to choose channel/brand names centered around the fact that they have a beard. To me it's just kinda one dimensional/flat and (for lack of a better term) cringe. Don't get me wrong, you have a glorious beard! That sort of name just doesn't make you stand out in any way apart from putting you in the category of other creators who seem to want to brand themselves based on the fact that they have facial hair. Just my two cents!
The first game i played, similar to those you showed, is Crimsonland wich exists since 2003. It have less mechanics but the same basics like leveling and upgrading while fighting for new weapons, power ups and so on. It was a lot of fun too but as i mentioned less mechanics. sry for my (maybe) bad english 😅
What about realm of the mad god? It's definitely different, but also it feels like maybe there might be way too many criteria for the RBH genre. I think any game with hoards of mobs, leveling up bigger and bigger attacks, and mostly not scrolling through an area on purpose (like getting to the boss). Also yeah roguelike and randomness should be in there I think.
Sank a lot of time into Soulstone Survivors when it came out as a demo and then later released (Done loops that are too many hours long). It's probably the worst balanced in the entire genre (in terms of the ways you do and mitigate damage), has a progression system that doesn't truly add in depth to what you do in each run, and the enemies never evolve or make you feel like the game is getting harder outside of pure dmg output if you aren't blocking/dodging it all. Shoulda been F2P honestly with how they never ended up adding the rest of the "endgame" for the rest of the classes and such. Then they decide to use every bit of the game to make their new roguelite which is just a different camera angle with a different gameplay loop by a fraction, anything new besides maps/objectives is just the content they were supposed to add to Soulstone Survivors.
I've put a hell of a lot more than 40 hours in VS. One I just saw asmongold play is called Hall of Torment. Has a Diablo 1 look, and you start upgrading your characters after you lose or beat the level. You won't beat the first map in one try.
Good list and for anyone getting into the genre VS is free on mobile. Have a few of these on my Steam wishlist so affordable and hours of fun. Thank you!
Hey, man, great video! I just bought Further Still thanks to you. One advice: things like the features you'd recommend devs add to the game or the things you would consider to be needed for a successful reverse bullet game, feel a bit misplaced in-between games in a tier list. It'd have been better if added before or after the Top 9, as a closing or opening comment. Or it could be great material for a complete new video. Edit: Great, now I bought HellEscape...
You're way off on the genre history. Early examples of what you're describing can be found in games like Robotron 2084 and Space Dungeon released in the early 80s. Back then, they were known as twin-stick shooters because they used a unique control scheme of essentially 2 joysticks. One joystick for movement, the other for shooting. The genre was then re-generalized as 'multidirectional shooters' and you ended up with games like Geometry Wars.
I would have put 3 Rogue Genesia, 2 or 1 Soulstone survivor, 1 or 2 brotato and completely removed Nomad survivor from the list. this one to be honest was with Hall of torment just okay reverse bullet hell. Maybe replaced it with boneraiser minions or Deep rock galactik survivor. well your video was out before those last two one ahah
Looking for the newest most fleshed out RBH, since I have a hankering for some vampire survivors today... Found your channel, subbed! Love that you gave the #1 spot to genesia for the reason you gave it. Good to see a small innovation like "rogs adventure", that you feel works well in the genre and you use the platform to give credit where credit is due! I think I'll get vampire survivors afterall, though. Looks like no ones done it better yet and I haven't played it yet! Thanks for the video
Thank you for this video, I've unlocked everything in Vampire Survivors, have all the achievements, and even though I still find it fun and addictive to play, I just wanna try some new and similar games. Found this video through a reddit thread you posted and I'm so glad google brought me here!
Bruuuh good video, good content but voice is not well audible. If you can try to put an equaliser over your voice and drop the levels down alot of the bass elements and maby amplify higher mid to higher frequencies. There is an ongoing bassy rumble from your deep voice muffling the sound. Keep up the quality content *thumb*
The audio is super scuffed on this video in particular. If you happen to watch my latest video, please let me know if the audio sounds better! I played around a lot with my setup so I could stop using Nvidia broadcast.
Oh man, that's tough. I think if I had to pick just one I'd still buy Vampire Survivors, but Nordic Survivors would be a close second choice; it's still in early access, but it's gotten regular updates since it launched and they plan to launch 1.0 late this year.
Thank you for putting Rogue:Genesia first!
And thank you for all the hard work and love that's been put into it!

theoretically, it doesn't need to be top-down. You could quite plausibly have a side-scroller reverse bullet hell.
Bullet Heaven is a better genre name.
I'm still partial to Reverse Bullet Hell, but I switched to calling them Bullet Heaven's because it's the accepted name now :)
