So Evony's ads are *infamous*, about ten years ago they were spamming them everywhere and it was all scantily-clad women saying "come play my lord" - it was so infamous other games started making fun of it in their ads. Interesting that they never stopped with terrible clickbait ads that don't represent the game, they just changed them to fit the format that's working these days.
GaiaOnline is more than likely a spot where I saw way too many of these ads. I'm just mindfucked that they lived long enough to hit the mobile market, since I was seeing those ads on desktop for the longest time like "Okay even I'm not too stupid horny enough to click on THAT."
Another fun fact is that this type of game has so many clones made the same company as evony. They all just have a different paint (supernatural/high fantasy/steampunk... you get the gist). Worst of all is that you are basically forced to pay for a city protection shield so that you won't get raided by high-level player, who pray on newbs who went through the game's early beginner phase, meaning their free city shield will evaporate. Basically every time you log in your kingdom you'll will see it burned and plundered for resources that took ages to collect ingame. You start from zero again and again and again. It's another really shitty incentive to make people spend money. The game has basically a protection racket going on to protect you from overpowered whale players. People who still keep playing after that and keep paying are nuts and are probably super masochist.

Only to be ruined due to... Well... (If you watched that scene from nimona and watched that ad from afk journey. Then you would understand on what I'm talking about)
Hydroneer has some very undeniable jank, but I like it. Especially after you've set up your first automation. Also, whomever told you to sell products isn't really being helpful. Selling bars that you produce is the best way of getting money, and you'll want to buy a pickaxe as soon as possible so you can reach the bottom and must valuable patch of dirt. You get heavier resources the lower the dirt you've excavated is.
Yeah, I think Hydroneer is an odd one for this video. Its not a mobile game looking to hook you into micro-transactions at every turn, like most of the others. Its a niche game for people who like to build machines. I'm surprised they advertise on UA-cam.
Yeah, a real indie game, one I actually like, getting only a 4 when crappy mobile RPGs get 4.5 - 5 is kinda insulting. It's supposed to be a bit silly of a factory game with item piles and whatnot. No idea what caused the lag, but worse stuff happens in AAA games, let alone small indie titles. I didn't even know they could afford ads, let alone have them.

I'll admit it, I enjoy afk journey. I've played it about a month now, just finished the main story, and I'm probably 2 or 3 days from getting level cap. On the "getting a lot of legendaries" thing, it becomes less of a problem when you consider legendary is the third lowest rank out of eight, and you increase the power of your heroes by combining copies: Epic>epic+>legendary>+>mythic>+>supreme>supreme + Each character unlocks an ability at each of the "+" ranks and after reaching supreme they get an upgradable "unique weapon" Like you noticed, they throw out free pulls and level up mats like candy. A lot of different events and daily tasks give a trickle of resources needed to buy specific heroes from the in-game shops. And probably what is most interesting to me: when I reach level cap I'll be able to enter the first "season" that started a few days ago. From what I hear, you go to a different continent with a new world map, level reset (keep rarity) and a bunch more rewards. All in all, it does a really good job of "making number go up" without it feeling soulless, irrelevant, or specifically cash-grabby. Not to say it's not filled with a lot of the usual suspects of monetization, but they don't have a lot of the worst ones. F2p is fully playable, with no quality of life features locked behind a pay wall or members only zones. You'll progress slower than someone with the $10 subscription and you'll never reach the heights of the whales, but you can still enjoy the full game for free.
the level reset isn't actually a reset, but another level bar basically. Your normal resonance level stats still apply but season levels impact stats WAY more than normal levels, so it's still like a soft reset. I've been playing for a bit longer, and being one of the weakest players in my guild is quite painful. (Kinda my fault I happened to get into the server's #2 guild with over half of them having spent some amount of money but ehh, them's the breaks)
I love this game, but I'm still a little unsure about the season system. having all my progress erased after 90 days seems weird to me. I think the f2p limited cosmetics might make up for it, but idk yet

except Arknights isn't a "place unit, and watch" kind of game. almost every character has 1 skill you can activate, and 1-3 of them that you can pick from before the battle begins. giving way more engagement that way i saw there.

i played AFK arena for a while and its biggest pull for me was definitely the art (and, after i got into it, the story tidbits you find in character bios and such. i especially liked lucretia's story). if i remember right, once you get out of the opening hours, progression winds up being a lot more based on pulling duplicates of your heroes so you can upgrade them to higher rarities--which is why it's so easy to get legendaries. i assume AFK journey is similar on that

This unlocked a core memory of 12-year-old me playing those browser games where you endlessly upgrade individual buildings, produce units, then go into an overworld to send out raids that take hours to reach their target. I *think*(?) Die Stämme (Tribal Wars) kinda popularized that genre in the early 2000s . I have semi-fond memories of some of them. Ogame is the only one I remember the name of, which was a space-based one and I also remember one where you had a dragon hero unit to accompany your army and hang out in your castle that you'd have to feed and level up.

Watcher of Realms just tried to be Arknights, except it's much less complex. Arknights had class variety, you chose who to deploy when to deploy them, sometimes you had to switch the units mid fight according on the enemy type, and it was just that much better.
It's arknights catered to the non weeb western audience, which wouldve been fine if they actually pulled all the mechanics, instead they just took the bare minimum and stole some maps and called it a day.

They both have classes, and arknights isn’t the first tower defence and nor the last. Similar to PtN except for the part some maps leave your ranged units on the path of enemies that needs a tank/frontliner in front/range of them. I’m not a fan of either, but arknight has the gameplay and I don’t mind chibi style but the artstyle they chose in game is a turn off for me.
Star Rail has been advertised to me so many times and while it's a gacha game, and made by hoyoverse. I've been impressed with it. While an hour of gameplay won't satisfy much and you can easily be distracted by side quests, if you manage to play until you reach Penacony, the story and visuals just ... hit different ig.
Penacony made that game for me. I liked Jarilo VI, but space china was such a huge drag that I stopped playing for a bit because of it. I come back for 2.0 and bam, the craziness of Penacony is exactly what I was hoping for in HSR. Hoyoverse know how to make quality stuff.
I've been waiting for that game since beta and played since release, and still do.. Never missed a login day, even when I also hate that "huh?! What??" part of the China ship story lol.. Too bad, I love Dan Heng... But that part of the story is like being made by a completely different person.. (I also say no to Kafka)

Honestly, the best thing to come out of AFK Journey was ironically an AD. The song Edge of the World by Colm McGuinness and Lauren Babic shocked me, I wasn't expecting to listen to actual great music in the midst of so many stupid mobile game ADs, and once I went after the full song it was so good I genuinely got interested in the game just because of that. Didn't take long to figure out it's not my type of game, but still, that's really impressive and that song is forever saved on my playlist, there's real passion in the production of that art piece and it shows.
Yeah, he should stick to to the crappy mobile games, indie games often cater to their audience. Their audience is not people who even remotely enjoy gatcha games. Also the fact that he just sold his swords to the jewler, instead of a better shop, means he did't actually explore the map.

I’m shocked that of all the scamy games that have come and gone throughout the decades, Evony is still around all these years latter. I’m 30 and I think I still must have been in elementary when I saw the first ads for it before they started using lewd fantasy art to bait sign-ups; actually remember playing it for a bit before getting extremely bored.

I played Evony back in 2009. Back then it was just a base builder game and you sent your army to attack other players. You basically had to join a clan/guild, or else you'd never make any progress. I don't remember what sort of microtransactions there were back then, but I'm sure they were there. I only remember the game because I somehow joined a clan of all Europeans. They were all really good people. Had a lot of fun conversations with them. Basically, the polar opposite of just about every online community nowadays.

As a F2P AFK Journey player from Day 2 or 3 of the game releasing without skipping a single day of playing (so 74 days in total), I can say that it is exactly what it says it is. An idle game with story, neat cutscenes here and there and a progression system that lets you see bigger numbers, higher levels and collect heroes multiple times because they need to be upgraded to gain access to more of their kit. I am not paying but investing quite a lot of time which is kind of the more valuable thing one might argue and I am still kind of able to challenge high rank PVP although I feel like I have to use a lot more strategies and positioning than those who simply bought all the upgrades there are. The game definitely is not made for everyone and can be frustrating due to it being an autobattler just like TFT is. I am quite fond of that genre and I am a sucker for progress oriented gameplay since my completionist brain likes checking things off and the game really wants you to get your serotonine kick via leveling up different stuff with the ultimate goal of being done with AFK stages and the story. There's currently a 'new' season going on with more gameplay after most players have already completed the first acts of the story and there's been quite some drama with the developer being stingy with giving out stuff but they had to go back and fix their rewards. So far I still like it but I do not know how long this game can keep me invested.
Not that I want you to, but have you seen ads for The Battlecats? I doubt it's something you would personally enjoy, but it's pretty fun for what it is. The chaotic randomness of the characters you unlock has an odd appeal, and you can play the entire game for free without much issue. For a Gacha, it's extremely economical; I probably put in over a hundred hours, back when I used to play, and only spent about fifteen bucks, and even that was optional. Considering what the average CoD game goes for these days, I'd say that's a steal.

4:02 - I like it when games lock settings behind the intro. Being blasted the entire intro really gives a strong positive first impression. Playing at 30fps because I can't turn down graphical settings only improves upon the already strong positive first impression. Visuals being terrible because of said higher-set graphical settings perfects the positive first impression. (Because most games default with motion blur and other crap on)
I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like Hydroneer. I had a blast with that game about two years ago, but I understand it's not for everyone. No inventory, grindy start, janky interactions via dropping items and the placement system being horrible can definitely turn people off. But I actually enjoyed the gridny start, it was pretty chill and when I first automated water it felt like great progress. But if you want that game that will "prove that automation can be fun" then I definitely recommend Factorio.
Kids are very vulnerable to prizes/points. Honestly that points, mega points, gold star system is probably incredible at getting kids to do chores. I may adapt a similar system, albeit with some tangible rewards at the end of the loop.
as a teacher, we learned that this is the exact thing you should not do because kids need to learn and understand why certain chores must be done (so they do them willingly). i admit, it is tempting though
AFK Journey giving you LOTS of hero pulls, is actually quite common. I've tried dozens of Gacha Autobattlers at this point, and it's actually quite rare to NOT get an insane amount of front-end rewards. If you play a game for longer than the first week, you will suddenly notice rewards drop to almost nothing and take ages to acquire anything worthwhile with your wallet. Suddenly, the $0.99 or the $4.99 packages start to look enticing. The weekly battle-pass starts to have an allure to it. It's basically just substance abuse; give you a massively fun and care free time as a new customer, knowing that it'll be easier to upsell you in the long-run... and that the itch will require greater lump sums to scratch.
"Need specific team comps to beat ultra challenging fights" Thats just an excuse to force players to buy, level, gear, upgrade, evolve, shine, advance, remort, and a dozen other words for "upgrade" every hero to access content because they make more money if every character in your 500 hero game is needed for something somewhere.
Normally (if you dont play dxmb that is) you will already have most of these specific team comps already close to where they need to be before you even hit that level. And in at least the games that ive played if you are ever stuck and cant progress you can just play a different modus to get the materials you need to progress where you are stuck. So forcing isnt the right word.
Hydroneer though… I understood your reasons but it’s one of the best games for doing your own thing, your own way, there’s cars, bombs, automation and even quests that are very engaging
Evony has been around at least since the 90's when I was in High School. There were a lot of browser based games like that, all trying to get your money. It makes me laugh that it's stil around and is pretty much the exact same game with slightly better graphics. Very surprised to see Hydroneer on here. I loved that game when it first came out and have been tempted to go back and play it. I don't think I have ever seen an ad for it.
Also, Total Battle (from Scorewarrior) is yet another Russian game studio based in Cyprus (lower taxes) that has basically spent zero in development and game design (as you said, just ripping off Evony, which itself spent basically nothing on game design) and instead spends most of the their $10 million USD on UA-cam ads.

I really want you to do a deep dive into the makers of these games. Evony, which came out in 2009, is somehow STILL getting random boys to download the game and make in-game purchases. So much so that this single game made David Guo over $216 million USD in revenue in 2023 (unable to find info about how much of that he sunk back into UA-cam ads, though).
I remember playing a game called "7th Dragon", "7 Dragons", or something like that. It was an Evony-like game and it was the first of the genre I'd played. I had a decent amount of fun as a kid on Internet Explorer, acknowledging that I, as a kid, definitely had the time to close the game and let the Keep, Walls, Farms, etc take hours to build. Support for it must've dried up shortly after I stopped playing, because I went back after a while and couldn't find it. And how crazy is it that Evony has become its own genre?

Long ago, a friend and I used to play the original version of Evony. It was a basic base builder game where you could attack other players, sort of like clash of clans. It was pretty fun. This new one looks like they acquired the trademark name and created a horrible bastardization of it
Honestly, as a fan of AFK game, AFK Journey is nothing short of a masterpiece. AFK Arena is one of the oldest games in the genre, and the studio's experience truly shows in Journey. While yes, the AFK stages limit is kinda annoying, it does serve a purpose, it basically denotes a 'level limited zone' going forward, since if your afk level is low, the restricted zone will be a lot harder to play in (if not impossible to progress). As for the multiple 'Legendaries', I wouldn't worry about it. The game is new, and they have imported very few heroes from their lore. A lot more are to come, and like in many of these games, you need a lot of hero copies to make the heroes truly shine. AFK Arena strikes a nice balance in that they actually give you a few copies to get that dopamine boost, but you have to grind to get any true usage of the more powerful heroes that need to be at rank Mythic or Mythic +.
Kingdom rush was probably the best tower defense game I ever played. It's honestly strange that they didnt capitalize on how amazing it was and made it into the golden standard of all Defense games.
To be fair, playing 1-2 hours before reviewing a game is perfectly fine to an extent. If a game hasn't captured a player's attention in the first few hours, then that player has already moved on and playing something else. There is a reason why Steam chose the 2 hour mark for when they allow blanket refunds, since over 80+% of players quit within that first two hours. If they stuck out the two hours, they tend to be the ones that play the game "fully".
Its not my type of game but the rating on hydroneer is crazy harsh, it clears any other game in your couple "mobile game" review videos even with its jank. Still loved these videos though, should definitely continue this series.
I didn’t even know afk journey had gates for afk levels, but that’s probably because I barley played the main story most of the time and recently finished all the afk stages, afk journey definitely has a problem with progression though, I’ve been playing the game since launch and already have almost all my hero’s gear maxed out, hopefully they fix progression

That was absolutely hilarious when you boldly mounted your likely futile attack on some seemingly nearby mid-level deity only to discover it might just as well have been in a far distant star system for how long it would take for you to reach it in game time.
That afk level gate is actually a second layer of brick wall bs. In order to upgrade legendaries you need this purple dust, which trickles out of afk mode at a snails pace. It's the true progression pace of the mid-game, how quickly you generate dust to rank up to scale your base stats enough to stand a chance. They added the locks to story mode as an extra middle finger to get you ready for what's to come
If you want to see the full potential of Hydroneer, you should watch Let's Game it Out. He's really funny and actually is willing enough to have the patience to grind for the items. And also, these types of games usually requires creativity and thinking outside the box skills to finds exploits within the game so it became less grindy. People like Josh from Let's Game it Out or the Spiffing Brits who centralized their content on finding exploits or loopholes in games.

So Evony's ads are *infamous*, about ten years ago they were spamming them everywhere and it was all scantily-clad women saying "come play my lord" - it was so infamous other games started making fun of it in their ads. Interesting that they never stopped with terrible clickbait ads that don't represent the game, they just changed them to fit the format that's working these days.

GaiaOnline is more than likely a spot where I saw way too many of these ads. I'm just mindfucked that they lived long enough to hit the mobile market, since I was seeing those ads on desktop for the longest time like "Okay even I'm not too stupid horny enough to click on THAT."
These days, their ads have devolved into putting an ai pic on screen for 30 secs

Another fun fact is that this type of game has so many clones made the same company as evony. They all just have a different paint (supernatural/high fantasy/steampunk... you get the gist). Worst of all is that you are basically forced to pay for a city protection shield so that you won't get raided by high-level player, who pray on newbs who went through the game's early beginner phase, meaning their free city shield will evaporate. Basically every time you log in your kingdom you'll will see it burned and plundered for resources that took ages to collect ingame. You start from zero again and again and again. It's another really shitty incentive to make people spend money. The game has basically a protection racket going on to protect you from overpowered whale players. People who still keep playing after that and keep paying are nuts and are probably super masochist.

Selling bars that you produce is the best way of getting money, and you'll want to buy a pickaxe as soon as possible so you can reach the bottom and must valuable patch of dirt.
You get heavier resources the lower the dirt you've excavated is.
Yeah, I think Hydroneer is an odd one for this video. Its not a mobile game looking to hook you into micro-transactions at every turn, like most of the others. Its a niche game for people who like to build machines. I'm surprised they advertise on UA-cam.

Yeah, a real indie game, one I actually like, getting only a 4 when crappy mobile RPGs get 4.5 - 5 is kinda insulting. It's supposed to be a bit silly of a factory game with item piles and whatnot. No idea what caused the lag, but worse stuff happens in AAA games, let alone small indie titles. I didn't even know they could afford ads, let alone have them.

Evony is ANCIENT. I remember them having the sketchy banner ads in the late 2000's.
I'll admit it, I enjoy afk journey. I've played it about a month now, just finished the main story, and I'm probably 2 or 3 days from getting level cap.
On the "getting a lot of legendaries" thing, it becomes less of a problem when you consider legendary is the third lowest rank out of eight, and you increase the power of your heroes by combining copies:
Epic>epic+>legendary>+>mythic>+>supreme>supreme +
Each character unlocks an ability at each of the "+" ranks and after reaching supreme they get an upgradable "unique weapon"
Like you noticed, they throw out free pulls and level up mats like candy. A lot of different events and daily tasks give a trickle of resources needed to buy specific heroes from the in-game shops.
And probably what is most interesting to me: when I reach level cap I'll be able to enter the first "season" that started a few days ago. From what I hear, you go to a different continent with a new world map, level reset (keep rarity) and a bunch more rewards.
All in all, it does a really good job of "making number go up" without it feeling soulless, irrelevant, or specifically cash-grabby. Not to say it's not filled with a lot of the usual suspects of monetization, but they don't have a lot of the worst ones. F2p is fully playable, with no quality of life features locked behind a pay wall or members only zones. You'll progress slower than someone with the $10 subscription and you'll never reach the heights of the whales, but you can still enjoy the full game for free.
the level reset isn't actually a reset, but another level bar basically. Your normal resonance level stats still apply but season levels impact stats WAY more than normal levels, so it's still like a soft reset. I've been playing for a bit longer, and being one of the weakest players in my guild is quite painful. (Kinda my fault I happened to get into the server's #2 guild with over half of them having spent some amount of money but ehh, them's the breaks)
I love this game, but I'm still a little unsure about the season system. having all my progress erased after 90 days seems weird to me. I think the f2p limited cosmetics might make up for it, but idk yet

except Arknights isn't a "place unit, and watch" kind of game. almost every character has 1 skill you can activate, and 1-3 of them that you can pick from before the battle begins. giving way more engagement that way i saw there.

i played AFK arena for a while and its biggest pull for me was definitely the art (and, after i got into it, the story tidbits you find in character bios and such. i especially liked lucretia's story). if i remember right, once you get out of the opening hours, progression winds up being a lot more based on pulling duplicates of your heroes so you can upgrade them to higher rarities--which is why it's so easy to get legendaries. i assume AFK journey is similar on that

This unlocked a core memory of 12-year-old me playing those browser games where you endlessly upgrade individual buildings, produce units, then go into an overworld to send out raids that take hours to reach their target. I *think*(?) Die Stämme (Tribal Wars) kinda popularized that genre in the early 2000s . I have semi-fond memories of some of them. Ogame is the only one I remember the name of, which was a space-based one and I also remember one where you had a dragon hero unit to accompany your army and hang out in your castle that you'd have to feed and level up.
OGame had peak gameplay compared to all the clones of Die Stämme.
I believe it was the gateway game for many pre-teens to become a real gamer.

Watcher of Realms just tried to be Arknights, except it's much less complex. Arknights had class variety, you chose who to deploy when to deploy them, sometimes you had to switch the units mid fight according on the enemy type, and it was just that much better.
It's arknights catered to the non weeb western audience, which wouldve been fine if they actually pulled all the mechanics, instead they just took the bare minimum and stole some maps and called it a day.

They both have classes, and arknights isn’t the first tower defence and nor the last. Similar to PtN except for the part some maps leave your ranged units on the path of enemies that needs a tank/frontliner in front/range of them. I’m not a fan of either, but arknight has the gameplay and I don’t mind chibi style but the artstyle they chose in game is a turn off for me.
Star Rail has been advertised to me so many times and while it's a gacha game, and made by hoyoverse. I've been impressed with it. While an hour of gameplay won't satisfy much and you can easily be distracted by side quests, if you manage to play until you reach Penacony, the story and visuals just ... hit different ig.
Penacony made that game for me. I liked Jarilo VI, but space china was such a huge drag that I stopped playing for a bit because of it. I come back for 2.0 and bam, the craziness of Penacony is exactly what I was hoping for in HSR. Hoyoverse know how to make quality stuff.

Watching your vids made me remember some brazilian youtubers i used to watch, and it's a pretty good feeling of nostalgia.
Honestly, the best thing to come out of AFK Journey was ironically an AD. The song Edge of the World by Colm McGuinness and Lauren Babic shocked me, I wasn't expecting to listen to actual great music in the midst of so many stupid mobile game ADs, and once I went after the full song it was so good I genuinely got interested in the game just because of that. Didn't take long to figure out it's not my type of game, but still, that's really impressive and that song is forever saved on my playlist, there's real passion in the production of that art piece and it shows.

I’m shocked that of all the scamy games that have come and gone throughout the decades, Evony is still around all these years latter. I’m 30 and I think I still must have been in elementary when I saw the first ads for it before they started using lewd fantasy art to bait sign-ups; actually remember playing it for a bit before getting extremely bored.

I played Evony back in 2009. Back then it was just a base builder game and you sent your army to attack other players. You basically had to join a clan/guild, or else you'd never make any progress. I don't remember what sort of microtransactions there were back then, but I'm sure they were there. I only remember the game because I somehow joined a clan of all Europeans. They were all really good people. Had a lot of fun conversations with them. Basically, the polar opposite of just about every online community nowadays.
The discussion in the Evony dev room must've been:

As a F2P AFK Journey player from Day 2 or 3 of the game releasing without skipping a single day of playing (so 74 days in total), I can say that it is exactly what it says it is. An idle game with story, neat cutscenes here and there and a progression system that lets you see bigger numbers, higher levels and collect heroes multiple times because they need to be upgraded to gain access to more of their kit. I am not paying but investing quite a lot of time which is kind of the more valuable thing one might argue and I am still kind of able to challenge high rank PVP although I feel like I have to use a lot more strategies and positioning than those who simply bought all the upgrades there are. The game definitely is not made for everyone and can be frustrating due to it being an autobattler just like TFT is. I am quite fond of that genre and I am a sucker for progress oriented gameplay since my completionist brain likes checking things off and the game really wants you to get your serotonine kick via leveling up different stuff with the ultimate goal of being done with AFK stages and the story. There's currently a 'new' season going on with more gameplay after most players have already completed the first acts of the story and there's been quite some drama with the developer being stingy with giving out stuff but they had to go back and fix their rewards. So far I still like it but I do not know how long this game can keep me invested.

I doubt it's something you would personally enjoy, but it's pretty fun for what it is. The chaotic randomness of the characters you unlock has an odd appeal, and you can play the entire game for free without much issue.
For a Gacha, it's extremely economical; I probably put in over a hundred hours, back when I used to play, and only spent about fifteen bucks, and even that was optional. Considering what the average CoD game goes for these days, I'd say that's a steal.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like Hydroneer. I had a blast with that game about two years ago, but I understand it's not for everyone.
No inventory, grindy start, janky interactions via dropping items and the placement system being horrible can definitely turn people off.
But I actually enjoyed the gridny start, it was pretty chill and when I first automated water it felt like great progress. But if you want that game that will "prove that automation can be fun" then I definitely recommend Factorio.
Kids are very vulnerable to prizes/points. Honestly that points, mega points, gold star system is probably incredible at getting kids to do chores. I may adapt a similar system, albeit with some tangible rewards at the end of the loop.
as a teacher, we learned that this is the exact thing you should not do because kids need to learn and understand why certain chores must be done (so they do them willingly). i admit, it is tempting though

AFK Journey giving you LOTS of hero pulls, is actually quite common. I've tried dozens of Gacha Autobattlers at this point, and it's actually quite rare to NOT get an insane amount of front-end rewards. If you play a game for longer than the first week, you will suddenly notice rewards drop to almost nothing and take ages to acquire anything worthwhile with your wallet. Suddenly, the $0.99 or the $4.99 packages start to look enticing. The weekly battle-pass starts to have an allure to it. It's basically just substance abuse; give you a massively fun and care free time as a new customer, knowing that it'll be easier to upsell you in the long-run... and that the itch will require greater lump sums to scratch.
"Need specific team comps to beat ultra challenging fights" Thats just an excuse to force players to buy, level, gear, upgrade, evolve, shine, advance, remort, and a dozen other words for "upgrade" every hero to access content because they make more money if every character in your 500 hero game is needed for something somewhere.
Normally (if you dont play dxmb that is) you will already have most of these specific team comps already close to where they need to be before you even hit that level. And in at least the games that ive played if you are ever stuck and cant progress you can just play a different modus to get the materials you need to progress where you are stuck. So forcing isnt the right word.

Evony has been around at least since the 90's when I was in High School. There were a lot of browser based games like that, all trying to get your money. It makes me laugh that it's stil around and is pretty much the exact same game with slightly better graphics.
Very surprised to see Hydroneer on here. I loved that game when it first came out and have been tempted to go back and play it. I don't think I have ever seen an ad for it.
Also, Total Battle (from Scorewarrior) is yet another Russian game studio based in Cyprus (lower taxes) that has basically spent zero in development and game design (as you said, just ripping off Evony, which itself spent basically nothing on game design) and instead spends most of the their $10 million USD on UA-cam ads.

Evony, which came out in 2009, is somehow STILL getting random boys to download the game and make in-game purchases. So much so that this single game made David Guo over $216 million USD in revenue in 2023 (unable to find info about how much of that he sunk back into UA-cam ads, though).
I remember playing a game called "7th Dragon", "7 Dragons", or something like that. It was an Evony-like game and it was the first of the genre I'd played. I had a decent amount of fun as a kid on Internet Explorer, acknowledging that I, as a kid, definitely had the time to close the game and let the Keep, Walls, Farms, etc take hours to build.
Support for it must've dried up shortly after I stopped playing, because I went back after a while and couldn't find it. And how crazy is it that Evony has become its own genre?
15:25 the Kingdom Rush series is one of the handful of mobile games that are actualyl worth playing. They even justify spending real money on them for real.
Long ago, a friend and I used to play the original version of Evony. It was a basic base builder game where you could attack other players, sort of like clash of clans. It was pretty fun. This new one looks like they acquired the trademark name and created a horrible bastardization of it

Honestly, as a fan of AFK game, AFK Journey is nothing short of a masterpiece. AFK Arena is one of the oldest games in the genre, and the studio's experience truly shows in Journey. While yes, the AFK stages limit is kinda annoying, it does serve a purpose, it basically denotes a 'level limited zone' going forward, since if your afk level is low, the restricted zone will be a lot harder to play in (if not impossible to progress).
As for the multiple 'Legendaries', I wouldn't worry about it. The game is new, and they have imported very few heroes from their lore. A lot more are to come, and like in many of these games, you need a lot of hero copies to make the heroes truly shine. AFK Arena strikes a nice balance in that they actually give you a few copies to get that dopamine boost, but you have to grind to get any true usage of the more powerful heroes that need to be at rank Mythic or Mythic +.
Kingdom rush was probably the best tower defense game I ever played. It's honestly strange that they didnt capitalize on how amazing it was and made it into the golden standard of all Defense games.

To be fair, playing 1-2 hours before reviewing a game is perfectly fine to an extent. If a game hasn't captured a player's attention in the first few hours, then that player has already moved on and playing something else. There is a reason why Steam chose the 2 hour mark for when they allow blanket refunds, since over 80+% of players quit within that first two hours. If they stuck out the two hours, they tend to be the ones that play the game "fully".
Its not my type of game but the rating on hydroneer is crazy harsh, it clears any other game in your couple "mobile game" review videos even with its jank.
Still loved these videos though, should definitely continue this series.
I didn’t even know afk journey had gates for afk levels, but that’s probably because I barley played the main story most of the time and recently finished all the afk stages, afk journey definitely has a problem with progression though, I’ve been playing the game since launch and already have almost all my hero’s gear maxed out, hopefully they fix progression

That afk level gate is actually a second layer of brick wall bs. In order to upgrade legendaries you need this purple dust, which trickles out of afk mode at a snails pace. It's the true progression pace of the mid-game, how quickly you generate dust to rank up to scale your base stats enough to stand a chance. They added the locks to story mode as an extra middle finger to get you ready for what's to come
The inspirational trooper speech primed me for an underwhelming fight, but that follow-up was a stroke of unpredictable genius!

If you want to see the full potential of Hydroneer, you should watch Let's Game it Out. He's really funny and actually is willing enough to have the patience to grind for the items. And also, these types of games usually requires creativity and thinking outside the box skills to finds exploits within the game so it became less grindy. People like Josh from Let's Game it Out or the Spiffing Brits who centralized their content on finding exploits or loopholes in games.
