  • The Brooks Ravenna 9 is now in the arsenal of running shoes, my first ever Brooks running shoe. I'm grateful to now be in the position to have such a great collection of running shoes to choose from. The Brooks Ravenna 9 running shoe was purchased to test out a lightweight, stabilized running shoe. Since I am suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, I want to see if the Brooks Ravenna 9 will help with arch support, and hopefully help alleviate the pain that is happening in my left heel. Plantar Fasciitis is no joke, a very serious injury, that many runners suffer from. Share your thoughts down below as to how you are fighting back against plantar fasciitis in your heel bone area, including the types of running shoes you used during the healing process. I do hope this vlog brings you value for helping people identify a solid running shoe option in the Brooks Ravenna 9. Stay tuned on whether or not the Brooks Ravenna 9 helps with my plantar fasciitis.

Hello Seth, I'm writing to you from France. I'm an old runner but I've been running with stability shoes for 30 years. My wrong foot is the right and with neutral shoes it's often a tragedy. The Ravenna 9 is one of my favorite shoes today. I saw you try the Nike Structure 22 but the sole was too hard. Try the Structure 21 : more light, more flexible and so much speed!
Why don't you meet a podiatrist. In France, for your kind of problem, it's absolutely logic.
Your videos are privileged moments every day. A real pleasure. Thank you very much.

WOW ALAIN, thank you so much for your comment and for your ideas to help my PF issues. Such an honor to have a viewer from France!
Fascinating that the Structure 21 is more flexible. I use to LOVE Nike Structures, but that was 10 years ago. Yes, a Podiatrist would be smart, I appreciate the encouragement.

I'm having this issue as well. You can not be lazy on this, then it comes back. I struggled with this for 7 months. Went to a lot of doctors, got some insoles and it got better. It's not completely gone but it's manageable during training. But you really have to do your excercises. Nice channel

After 20 years of running in stability shoes, I switched to a neutral shoe for a marathon training cycle. I got through that fine, but a few months later developed plantar fasciitis. The only change in my running was the switch in shoe type. My experience and other reading I have done convinces me that that was the cause of my PF. While switching back to a stability shoe was important to prevent a recurrence, the treatment of PF was certainly stretching. Stretching the calf, Achilles, and plantar fascia were all critical in curing the problem.

This is an awesome video, and yes I suffer a lot from PF. I like you have found that the Brooks Raveena 9 is an awesome shoe and have been wearing them for 3 years now. My PF is not so much the heel but the arch area that leads to some minor discomfort in the heel. My right foot does roll inward as I did have myself filmed while running on a treadmill. My flat feet are the major cause of my issues but Brooks does save the day!!!

I currently wear a neutral shoe, but haven't tried stability:
I hold off PF with the following three methods:
    1. Stretch the calves regularly (not just before and after running).
    2. Break down scar tissue with foot massage devices.
    3. Strengthen feet by regularly wiggling the toes and flexing up and down between the big toe and the four other toes.

I ran in the same shoes for years... no issues. Then switched & bought Niikes & got pf... lasted 4 years, 3 shots & 4 doctors. Finally a physical therapist suggested using toe stretchers & switching to zero drop altras... It worked! No pain finally. It does take a while for your feet to adjust though.

Brooks runner since 2007. I have tried others along the way and ALWAYS go back to Brooks. I initially began with the GTS, thinking I needed stability. I ran through about 5 series of them before being told I was more of a neutral runner. I went in for a thorough analysis and it turned out that I was in fact neutral. I switched over to Brooks Launch and never looked back. I like to feel the road and have shoes for both speed and distance. Ravenna didn't suit me when I tried them because I didn't pronate as much as I thought. Saucony is the only other brand I've had some success with but again, I always come back to Brooks. While I love the Launch, I think the Ghost is one of their best shoes available if you are okay with the 12mm drop. Although minimal, I fair better with the 10mm Launch. I ran in series 4, 5 and am currently still using my 6. I easily got over 300 miles in the 4 and 5. Probably closer to 400 before I knew it was time to upgrade.
Honestly, for PF, I think the shoe choice is far more overrated than just taking care of your issue by stretching, taking time off from running as-needed and simply addressing the root cause, which is not the shoe. I've had both store bought inserts and custom made orthotics. Those did help some but when I moved to a neutral shoe, I ditched them. Everyone is different but I think the one consistency with PF is treating the issue without the shoe ever being on your foot.

I have PF, it is the 2nd time in 5 years and I attributed it to increasing my speed and worn-out runners. Please try Ravenna 10. I've been a loyal Brooks wearer but I LOVE the new guardrails on the brooks support line. They've done away with the denser medial posts. So much gentler than previous models. Almost undetectable, mild stability.

Was just revisiting this video and noticed your post. Currently rotating the Kinvara 9 for short races and faster pace training days. Brooks Ghost 11 for longer slower runs, and the Saucony Zealot ISO 3 for in between days. When maybe I want to pick up the pace, but want more protection than I get from the Kinvara. I overpronate a bit on one foot, and my ankle is especially sore today after a 5k race in the Kinvara this morning (was already sore before the race, but it just exacerbated it). Thinking of getting a Ravenna 10 just to rotate in for a little support when I'm feeling beat up. Not sure if I need it or if the Ghost will do just fine for this, but I appreciate your comments on the Ravenna 10! Thanks.

@@KipCount I think the Ravenna will be a great recovery shoe when you feel a little beat up and need a little support. Btw, Ravenna's neutral sister is the Launch and the ghost's stability sister is the Adrenaline gts, the newest version 19 also has the new guardrails.

The observation I make from your treadmill running, is poor stabilisation in the hips. When the right foot is planted, the hips stay level, when on the left, you can see a visible dip to the right hip. No shoe will correct that weakness at the top, but correcting that will likely eradicate the "need" for anything with support. Cracking channel though Seth

Hey Seth! Just discovered your channel and really enjoying the content! The last time I was at the running shoe store (I've also talked with my PT about this a little as well) and when it comes to collapsing arches/PF, orthotics/inserts will help more than a stability shoe. Of course, the best thing to do is specific injury prevention exercises to correct muscle imbalances, but if you're already injured, I'd recommend either some custom orthotics from a podiatrist or getting some SuperFeet inserts. They have some that are specifically made for plantar fasciitis. I've never had PF, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt :) Just thought I'd pass the info along!

SETH: I'm 48, 5'9", 235# (stocky with a slightly gooey center) and I've gotten into running only in the last four years. I've gradually moved "up" from the recommended budget shoes from Saucony to the Adrenaline GTS line, but now it's getting to be time to get another pair and I'm sort of torn given the options available and different information I've heard.
I'm kid of looking to lower my offset to something around 8mm, and 10mm max. I keep hearing about how these more moderate offsets are more of a sweet spot than the 12mm that comes with the Adrenaline and Ghost, or the 0mm offset in the Altra Lone Peaks that I wear for short trail runs. Yes. I go from 12mm to 0mm, but those trail runs aren't that often. Add to that the school of thought that maximum padding may not necessarily lead to as comfy of a ride because of the tactile detachment that comes along with it regarding being able to "feel" the surface.
Until I really started researching the shoes I've been wearing last night, I had no idea I was wearing a stability shoe or that it had a 12mm drop. It does seem to be wearing down the middle, though, so I believe that's a promising sign? I've been fairly happy with the Adrenaline GTS 17s, but at my age you never are without a small ache or pain here and there, so I can't necessarily say that they must be the best for me or my style of running (3-4 times a week, usually in the 5K-10K range with a tortoise-like 30-minute 5K race now and again). Add to that the fact that the latest Adrenaline added the guide rails, so I can't even say that this one will work like the last one.
This is just extraneous info to see if you have any further thoughts. My main question is why you chose the Ravenna 10 over the Adrenaline GTS 19. They appear to be roughly the same shoe only with the Ravenna having a 2mm less offset and weighing roughly 3 oz less. Is the Ravenna just a better fit?
    Take care,
    A.J.
PS: I've had some PF issues in the past, but I believe I mostly got rid of that by losing some pounds, maintaining my "training" and doing a LOT of walking around near barefoot. Seriously, I never wear shoes at home, and if the situation permits, I usually just wear a pair of $6 water socks or $10 five-fingers-style water socks I got from WalMart - nothing that wants to force my toes into a cone like 95% of shoes. I bought into the part of "Born to Run" dealing with atrophy of the arch structures that result from always walking around with a wedge on your heel and all the padding that comes with shoes, especially in the arch. It seems to be working well for me. It's completely counterintuitive, but the feeling seems to be that if pain is resulting from the weakness of those structures, orthotics seem to offer a slight respite from the pain but don't address the underlying problem that's causing the pain. Heck, I remember that putting shoes on often made a world of difference in the pain from PF, but I knew that wasn't actually fixing anything.
    Just my thoughts and observations.

I have an over pronation problem, but stability shoes just do not work well for me. I’ve tried every major brand of shoe out there. For whatever reason, Nike Free are my favorite running shoe, light, and comfortable. It allows my foot to work as it should and I land on my mid foot (which is ideal). Yes I do still over pronate, but I feel like it’s happening to compensate for a muscular imbalance over time. If you just change over to stability shoes, the underlying reason for your pronation isn’t solved and that can cause issues in the long run.
TLDR: don’t buy stability shoes, learn how to train and strengthen your legs using your natural stride :)

  • @lania3717
    @lania3717 5 років тому +2

PF is due to over training/too much too soon. Stretching and foam rolling the hamstrings and calves are more important than the shoes. I have suffered from PF before when I started running 10 years ago. Was put in Asics kayanos. Way too much correction. The denser medial posts were pounding my arches. I like the new guardrails in the Brooks support line, the Brooks 10 and adrenaline gts 19. All the previous Brooks generations had denser medial posts. Guardrails offer gentler minimal stability, like bumpers on a bowling lane. Now I stretch and foam roll everyday to keep PF at bay.

Niner! the neutral vs stability argument = it depends. That orthotic insert is where you’ll get the best bang; keep up the strengthening and stretching - but it’s about reducing inflammation; so pump the brakes on hot water baths for your feet and pump more vitamin I pills, you need to take them every 4-6 hrs consistently for a week to get to/remain at steady state for anti-inflammation; and look into plasma rich platelet injections ! w dextrose added.

I love my Brooks Revanna 9s! They work for shorter runs, 5 mils or less, for me. I carry a lot of muscle mass for a runner so that could explain why I favor Asics and Brooks over Nike and Adidas. I favor a stability shoe but am not opposed to a neutral shoe. As long as the toe box fits me I find that I do well with my plantar fascitis.

This is just my opinion but from experience I found that it is neither of those but it is a minimal running shoe instead, because the heel pain is only caused by heel striking. This is because all of the force is being absorbed by your joints and your heel and it hurts because the shock cannot be absorbed by your muscles if you are landing on your heel.
Hope that made sense, like your channel bro!

I have had PF twice... both times lasted over a year. I did everything, from stretching, rolling, massage, ultra sonic treatment, dry needling, drugs, shoes, and insoles. I've spent thousands of dollars and thousands of hours working on it. Nothing helped. I noticed that (for me) loosening up the calves with a deep, hard massage and working the Achilles tendon relieved the PF. You have to REALLY work the calf muscle. Everything is connected.
To answer your question about shoes. I switched to Asics Nimbus to help with the PF. It did not do much. I wear orthotics insoles in my dress shoes, and for my running shoes when I have PF. Spenco makes decent insoles. You may want to try the ironman branded Spenco insoles

I’ve tried several shoes too and the ones that help my heel pain are New Balance Fresh Foam 1080’s, and I’ve ordered several pairs because they’re really cushy but not TOO cushy and mushy like Adidas Ultra Boost. I’m not a runner but am on my feet a lot and we have tile floors throughout our house. In the house I wear Oofos slides.

My plantar faciitis disappeared when I got stability shoes, New Balance 860 Freshfoam x v13. Finally I am getting into running like in my school days without fear of foot pain when training harder. Also trying out Asics GT1000. I have a high arch but the neutral shoes always gave me heel pain or plantar fasciitis. Since getting these shoes I can't wait for my runs.

Hoka Arahi 6 saved me from too many years of Vans (severe PF). Even if my feet are sore, I can put the Arahi’s on and be pretty close to pain-free. I tried the high drop recommendations from my local running shoe store, and they instantly flared me to a 10! I limped home…barely…on a short walk. Felt great in the store, but feet were like shredded wheat after just an hour or so. When I returned them to the store, I got 3 different recommendations, from 3 separate salesmen, about zero drop vs low vs high drop. So it’s a crap shoot.

I am a huge fan of stability running shoes. I suffered from PF and other running induced joint pains a couple of years ago, I was considering stop running, that was untill I was advised to try a pair of ASIC Kayanos. Well, it was the best running advise I ever received. The PF, the knee joints, the hip joints pains all went away, literally overnight. I now have moved on to Saucony Hurricanes, which I found as good a the Kayanos but a lot more durable.

Seth, just found your channel. Wow! There are other people out there like me. I recently started running again after a break of , um thirty years. Yes, I am in my late 60’s. But I have rediscovered the joy of running. My PF flared up during training for a half marathon. I took a break from running, 7 weeks right now. Bought some new shoes, New Balance 940 and Brooks Addiction 14. Just did a short 5K at 5 weeks using the Brooks. Haven’t run since. Going to a podiatrist next week for some medical advice. My question is it safe to run while suffering from PF? Can I cause permanent damage to my foot? Do heel cups help with PF?
Like the different comments. May purchase some neutral shoes to try them out.

Still watching the rest of the video, however, some of the best runners ever had serious overpronation and never had problems. There is a video showing extreme overpronation of halie gabresalsie (I know I murdered his name). There is a solid argument in shoes that prevent overpronation causing even more injuries.

Hey, I'm currently dealing with my low arches, overpronation, plantar fasciitis, severe calf tightness, lower back pain, you name it. I swear by stability shoes only. These have worked for me: Asics Kayano, Adidas Supernova ST, Saucony Hurricane, Brooks Adrenaline GTS, Brooks Ravenna, New Balance Vazee Prism to name a few. After knowing that stability is best, now you have to decide what amount of cushion should be appropriate for the particular run. If I'm going for a slow 5+ miles I'll use the Supernova/Adrenaline. If it's a more fast paced shorter run I'll definitely use the Ravenna or Vazee Prism.

The only shoes that really worked for running with PF were Brooks Launch 2. Shoes I’ve tried that don’t work: Hoka Clifton 5 (very narrow and insole cuts into foot when it collapses in as you step), brooks launch 5 had too extreme of a drop that it gave me shin splints, Brooks GTS series are very rigid to the point it feels like someone is hitting the bottom of your foot with one big rock. The search resumes...thanks for sharing your experience here.

@@SethJamesDeMoor Update: From now on, I will always visit a running store when selecting shoes. I finally visited one for the first time in my life and it was the best decision I've ever made with selecting shoes. I would have avoided many of my issues had I gone earlier. They were true professionals; the lady watched me walk and asked if I had ever injured my IT band (I did 5 years ago). She knew exactly what I needed she brought out the latest Brooks Ghost and Brooks Launch 6. My feet seemed most stable in the Launch 6 and I am very happy. To the rest my fellow PF sufferers, visit a reputable running store its way worth it. The prices really are close to what you find in other stores and online. But you cant beat the expertise the reputable running stores have.

A person has to wonder if (1) Supporting the foot against pronation doesn't contribute to it becoming even weaker at the point of weakness (2) Whether running barefoot through something like sand where the foot has to actually grab would strengthen the arch.

I've always been put instability shoes following in store gait analysis and fit advice. But..I've also had most running related injuries too. • @SuperCharger__

PF is a terrible condition. Had it in one foot, then the other. The thing is to experiment with different techniques, stretches, soaking, orthotics, you get the point, and try and determine what seems to be working for you. It's a tricky injury because at times you may feel anything you try is not working. But from my experience what helped me get rid of it is the good feet 3 system orthotics, the staussburg night sock, and slowly transition into a minimalist shoe at times to strengthen the arch, foot. I've tried just about everything, but the foot will heal eventually when its ready.

  • @brucemccaffrey8335

In my opinion, I think dealing and healing PF has little to do with the shoes. It certainly doesn’t help if you are wearing shoes that aren’t really working with your body, but I can see an argument for having a stability and a highly cushioned neutral shoe maybe lean moreover to the highly cushioned shoe. I think that is just based on what works for you. Something that helped me when I had PF was really rolling out my calf muscles. For me, PF was mostly because my calves were super tight and once I put a lacrosse ball to them before and after a run, PF was reduced by a lot and I didn’t really have too many problems after that.

The thing that helped me the most while I had planter was stretching during the day. Not just before I ran or before I went for a walk, but while school, and work. Anytime I was able to stretch, I would stretch for about 10 seconds. The best stretch is simply touching your toes. Hope your feet start to feel better!
The shoes that helped me the most were brooks, but the Nike Pegasus also are great. Stay away from Nike free run, I believe that those shoes played a big factor in my development of PF.
