  • Dell WD19TB / WD19TBS Thunderbolt Docking. Why docking? What is the difference between WD19TB and WD19TBS? When would I use a docking station over a Hub Display? What about MAC support? Take a look at the little known Dell docking accessory the MK15.

    Great and informative video. Audio quality is very hollow. But loved the details helped me solidify the purchase. Alot of people still use analog headphone/mic jack especially people in the music, broadcast, and production industry.

    Michael, I have an HP EliteBook 850 from my employer and an Alienware M17 for my personal use. I have 2 Dell 25” UHQ monitors a Logitech Wireless Keyboard & mouse, and a Fujitsu S1500 SnapScan scanner running on the USB ports. I would like to connect the monitors to the two DisplayPort connections on the WD19TBS, and everything else on the USB connections. I understand that the Alienware will have to use it’s own power supply since it’s 240W, and I actually planned on keeping both laptops on their own power bricks to keep the load off the Dock. I’m concerned about compatibility between the dock and the two laptops since they aren’t Dell units. Do you think they will work sending all the data over the Thunderbolt 3 connection?

      Hi Eric, you should be Okay doing this. You already addressed the power issue. DW19TBS for the most part is open standard. Only issue I hear (and not often) are with the RJ-45 port (usually around pushing patches to the PC). BTW, M17 awesome machine!

    This was a very informative video. I use a Dell laptop for work and Macbook at home. My job recently upgraded all of our docks at the office and allowed us to take the previous docks (WD19TB) home to use when we telecommute. I have the WD19TB at home connected to my Macbook Air M2 with two monitors. One monitor is connected via HDMI and the other is connected via DP (because the dock only has one HDMI port but has two DPs). The screen is extended on the monitors however its the same on both (mirrored) and I can't get it to extend on both. Previously I was using a different dock that worked properly but needed a DisplayLink driver due to the M2 limitations. Both monitors were connected via HDMI to that dock and extended correctly using DisplayLink. I downloaded the displaylink drivers but I still can't get my display extended to each monitor. Does the WD19TB support DisplayLink? Is this issue because of the displayport connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  7 місяців тому

      It is and issue with the M1 & M2 chips. The only way to get dual extended display is with DisplayLink or having Thunderbolt displays. We have a UD22 Universal dock (that can use DisplayLink) and it will support up to 3 displays on you MacBook. The WD19TB does not support DisplayLink.

    I have the WD19TBS and it definitely will not work with 2 x Dell monitors connected to my personal Apple Macbook Pro 2019 model (intel chipset and 4 x Thunderbolt 3 ports). My work laptop Dell Latitude 7410 also will not work on this dock when connected to 2 x Dell U2722D monitors. Workaround for personal and work is to only have one monitor connected to the WD19TBS and the other monitor connected directly to either the Macbook or the Dell 7410. This is not ideal or what I was hoping by using a Dock but it's a workaround that seems to work.

I have looked on the Dell site and it lists 3 different 180w power supplies but does not state which is for the dock. Also would the Dock screen mount adapter work with the 43 inch Dell monitor as I know it uses screw rather than the click in VESA mount.

    Hi Michael! Quick question for you. Could I trouble you to measure the length of the power cable that runs from the wall to the AC adapter, and the length of the USB-C cable that runs from the AC adapter to the port on the laptop itself? I chatted with Dell support on the site and they said 6 meters. I'm sure they meant 6 feet but I also needed the lengths of both cables separately, to correctly measure/plan out where I will mount the dock under my desk. Thanks so much for your helpful videos, definitely leaves me feeling more informed about an upcoming purchase I'll be making.

    Michael, I just found your vid while researching docks. I have an Inspiron 17-7779 with an NVIDIA GeForce 940MX, 65W power supply built in 2017. It has a USB-C connection next to the power connection. I would like to run two U3223QE monitors with the laptop closed and would like to use one of the WD series docks to do this. I found a 3 page document, last updated 3/29/2022, titled Dell Commercial Docking Compatibility. It has a long list of Dell models cross referenced to various WD19 models and the WD22 showing which ones are compatible. Unfortunately, there are no Inspiron models listed.
    Is my laptop compatible with the original WD19 180W and will the USB-C port on my laptop accept power from it?
    Assuming I would like to use a dock I buy now with future computers, is the WD22TB4 backwards compatible with my laptop?
    What would the difference be between the WD22TB4 and an original WD19 180W that had been modified with a WD22TB4 module (P/N 470-AFIT)? Does that module effectively turn the WD19 into WD22TB4? Or are subtle differences?
    Finally, would that WD19 always be up-gradable, if for example TB5 or TB6 comes out in the future? it might be a few years before I replace my laptop and TB4 might be out of date by then. Thanks

    I have a Dell XPS 13, 2019 model, a 27inch dell ultrasharp usb-c and a standard 27inch dell 4k. I've connected the laptop to the ultrasharp via USB-C (same one you have) and then the (cheaper) second display via daisy chain (USB-C to display port). The second monitor runs at 4k, however only at 30hz, not 60hz which isn't very useable. My IT department told me the limitation was the integrated graphics in the laptop, which couldnt push two high res displays. I understand you can connect multiple displays with the doc, but ultimately are you still constrained by your laptop GPU? Because if I have to upgrade the laptop to an XPS 15 with a proper graphics card, I'd rather save the money on the doc as I can just connect both displays to the new laptop

    Hi Michael, thanks for this great video. I own a Dell XPS 9710, and in certain situations (high GPU/CPU usage) the provided power supply runs short (which I believe it feeds 130W, same as the WD19TBS). So, would you recommend the WD19DC dock instead of the WD19TBS in order to prevent this power supply issue? Also, aside from the power feed being 210W instead of 130W, are there other differences in ports/capabilities between the WD19DC and WD19TB? Thanks

      WD19DC dock is your best bet. WD19TBS, only supply 90W of power. WD19DC has dual USB-C and will supply the power you need. Note: WD19DC is not Thunderbolt. Other trick I do, used WD19TBS and still plug in the power adapter from the notebook. Gives you the same result but now you have Thunderbolt. Second note: We just announced the WD22TB4 - Thunderbolt 4 dock. It has dual Thunderbolt ports vs 1 TB port on the WD19TBS.

    Hi Michael. Thank you for informative video. One advisor at Dell told me that WD19TBS is a newer version have the latest drivers. However, from your video, it sounds like that aside from Audio port, the monitor driving capabilities are the same. • @MichaelOHanian
      @MichaelOHanian  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Alex, The WD19TB and WD19TBS have the same performance and capability, minus the Audio port. They both come with a 180W power supply. The WD19DC comes with a 240W power supply. The WD19DC is recommended for more power hungry Precisions, such as the 7550 and 7750. They require 210W of power, more than 130W of power from the WD19TB/S (WD19TBS has a 180W power supply but it feeds only 130W of power to the notebook). Let me know that makes since to you.

There is another dock, the WD19DCS that comes with 240W power supply (delivers up to 210W of power to the notebook). Usually the WD19DCS is for the 7000 class Precision Notebooks (they need the extra power).

I cannot get the WD19 to display QHD on both screens. It will display QHD on one monitor, and some weird resolution, 2048x1080 on the other. Dell says its because my XPS is older and is only equipped with Dp1.2 and not DP1.4. Is there a Docking station that is both Thunderbolt 3 (fast data transfer) and has the power of 240W (standard power brick on this laptop)? I guess no...

    Can I have WD19TB and my main power supply plugged in directly to the laptop, or would that destroy the laptop?

    The plastic is EXTREMELY weak in the dual USB-A jack on the back of the dock.
    If you look around, it's easy to see that tons of WD19(S)/WD19TB(S)/WD19DC(S) users are reporting that the top port in the dual USB-A jack broke. It's the piece of plastic that goes inside the USB-A male plug.
