For everyone facing this issue. it's not a fault with the dock. Apple decided not to support MST (Multi stream transport) which is necessary for DP protocols to power multiple monitors. But there's a workaround for Mac's that would let you use two monitors (Intel Macs and M Pro/Max chips only, physical limitation on M chips, non pro/max ones). One of the monitors should go into the DP/DP over USB-C/HDMI port and the other monitor should essentially be connected to the Thunderbolt-3 port on the farther side of the dock (not the other type C with DP on it), this way one monitor is powered using Thunderbolt-3 (you can use a Type-C to DP cable) and the other one to the native display output pin.

Honestly, this is easily one the most resourceful videos I've seen on YT ever. I find so many cut it short. light on details, forcing everyone to ask all these q?s in the comments section. This is great: you showed footprint, you plugged it in, tested configs... I literally got all my answers. BTW, I find it super interesting that this video is titled w/ the Mac in mind, yet all these PC laptop questions in the comments. So weird. Anyhow, cheers dood.

Its worth noting that the 2x display port arent really full ports, they are just two halves of the multilink displayport. What that means is if you want to run 2x4k@60Hz monitors, you will need to put one monitor on one of the display port sockets, and the other you will have to get a TB to DisplayPort cable, and plug it into the passthrough TB socket.

Thanks very much @dailybatman, I try not to be too boring to listen to. To answer your question not really, however usually its due to external factors that could cause slow network speeds, not usually related to dock hardware. Factors that could cause slower then expected speeds would be older or damaged network cables, limitations set by switches and routers. I even had recent incident where massive speed different using different browsers on the same computer and turns out it was the organisation proxy limiting particular browser type speed.

The only way to use 2 monitors in macbook is connecting a usbcxhdmi dongle to dock’s usbc output. So you are going to connect an hdmi cable in the dongle and another video cable to dock’s videooutput. You don’t need to install any displaylink driver.

Hi Glogsplat, welcome to my videos, before you drop some serious money at this have a look at a OWC thunderbolt 3 dock I have been recommended these work far better with Macs in mind. @glogsplat 5 років тому +1

@@BsianTech Thanks for the recommendation. Just looked into it, it does certainly seem like a better device for Mac to use straight out of the box, especially considering the prices are so similar. Dell is having a sale on the WD19TB right now putting it down to $372.75 so it is cheaper right now than it usually is. Did you have many issues setting up your Mac to work with the WD19TB or any other Dell docks or was it a relatively smooth process overall?

I was able to make two external DELL monitors work (DP & HDMI with Dongle) with the Mac book pro (touch bar). The monitor with DP cable goes into 1 of the DP ports and the monitor with HDMI (with a dongle) goes into the usb-c port in the back that has power icon on the docking station. I did not directly connect the HDMI cable to the docking station. If i do that it gives mirror display on the monitors.

Can you use the thunderbolt 3 port on the back as the primary connection to computer? The reason I ask is because I want to position the dock further away from the computer than the dock's hardwired cable allows. And I can't seem to find a TB3/USB4 extension cable anywhere! (at least one longer than 6 inches)

    • @BsianTech
      @BsianTech  3 роки тому +1

Hi Stretch, thanks for this really good question. I was curious and tested this out myself on the WD19TB and can report that if you plug in a Power+data thunderbolt 3 cable to the back thunderbolt port on the WD19TB it "WILL NOT" make the dock work, it won't charge nor will it pass through USB or ethernet or display ports to the computer, therefore the thunderbolt port at the back of the dock is not an upstream thunderbolt port. So you must use the hardwired USB-C cable on the WD19TB. Sorry unable to find a solution for your situation.

A better dock to use with the macbook would be Other World Computing's Thunderbolt 3 Dock (made specifically for macs). Also, be wary of buying Dell products outside of authorized dell retailers. I learned the hard way that Dell will not warranty (or even recognize the service tag) such products (I bought a dell tb16 on amazon; it appears to have been a grey market item. This is not a DisplayLink dock. It uses native DP/HDMI over TB3 link, which means it depends only on capabilities of connected system. If you're not able to use all 3 outputs as separate screens then it's a OS X issue, not the dock (it clearly detects and enables all outputs).

Hi @Anmol Thiara welcome to my videos. Thanks for the feedback. The power button on the dock mirrors the same function your power button does on the laptop (provided it is a supported model, most cases it will) eg. if you have set your power button on your laptop to sleep in Windows then the power button on the dock will do the same.
Most laptop batteries for the last decade won't overheat (if it isn't a faulty battery) if it is constantly plugged into the dock even if it is shutdown or running as most laptop batteries have smart charging built into it. Hope that helps your questions =).

Hi @belle mm, if you are looking to run dual 4k monitors then only the WD19TB and WD19TBS is what you are after. The non-WD19 can only go 2k for dual monitors. As for which to go WD19TB vs WD19TBS its practically the same dock just S version has no headphone jack that's it. The Latitude 5420 has thunderbolt 4, it doesn't look like you can get a non-Thunderbolt version of the USB-C port on them so that will save you research on that.
You can refer to this dell page on the WD19TBS on the 4k support for the different number of monitor configuration, www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-au/dell-wd19tbs-dock/wd19tbs_user_guide/display-resolution-table?guid=guid-cb54f38b-163a-41bf-8b2e-3e6f3835d2ea&lang=en-us . Boiling it down to the major real difference if you don't compare the different types of ports both have for monitors if you are running any 4K monitor get the WD19 it will have proper support due to the port performance increase where as the WD15 will only support a single 4K @ 30Hz via the miniDisplayport or HDMI. Good video - thank you. I've just taken delivery of the New XPS 15 laptop and want to use it to power 2 - 4K monitors... would you suggest the WD19TB is the very best dock for this? Also... buying this dock through Dell seems VERY expensive and it doesn't (currently) seem available on Amazon and so is there an alternative (cheaper) place to buy?
PS. Thank you for all your helpful videos :-)

Wow congratz on the new XPS 15 it should be amazing powerful I have been eyeing on it myself, you going to enjoy it! As for pairing it with the WD19TB it will be great as it is one of the supported docks on their site. I agree this dock is very expensive my suggestion's are to do a search for your local computer stores around you. In Australia I found our computer stores selling it for AU$350-400 which is cheaper than Dell Australia RRP$495. I use this site a lot in australia which compares pricing for computer stores in australia staticice.com.au

Great video, but i have two questions.
    1. I have notebook Precision 5540, Dell dock station WD19TB and the Desktop PC. I've plugged my monitors and input devices into Dockstation and connect dockstation to notebook via Thunderbolt. Works great but if i need my Desktop PC than i should replug all cables to PC which is pain everytime. I've already spend almost 400$ on dockstation and dont want expensive solution atm. My PC doesnt have Type-C/Thunderbolt port so i cant unplug dockstation from notebook and plug into PC.
The question: is there some PCIe card with Thunderbolt port/USB-C that can used for connecting with dockstation and can transfer power and etc. from PC to dockstation, monitors and take input info from mouse and keyboard which are connect to dockstation?
Or do i even need PCIe? May be there is easier solution, some cable smth like VGA to type-c port for connecting to dockstation?
So in the end of the day i can just plug/unplug 1 cable between 2 systems.
    2. If there are no any solution from question 1. what is the cheapest KVM for my solution?

Is this dock station compatible with precision M4800???

The WD19 series docks aren’t compatible with the M4800. Look at the good old Dell Advanced E-Port II port replicator those are really good mechanical docks (really love them) and last a long time too. Should be able to pick a cheap one off the reselling market :).

Hi pxc, not much as change in terms of drivers but I have learnt more on how to get the WD19TB work better with macs on dual screen via the dock if you are a mac user.
