    I’ve been using a this dock for about 8 months and had zero noise issues. I also think your expectations for the dock capabilities and not reasonable. If they were, you would have been able to recommend an alternative dock that does what you need, and you didn’t. Seems like you have a unique use case and should either work off a desktop (you said portability wasn’t really important) or plug your more draining peripherals directly into the laptop and just used the dock for everything else that it was actually built for. Your review was like someone buying a car and being disappointed that it didn’t fly.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  2 роки тому +2

      I can kind of see your point. But it has since turned out that the audio issues were caused by the laptop as more testing revealed that they happened plugged directly into the laptop as well. The dock did seem to make it happen more, but the root of that issue was the laptop. Since the laptop was repaired though I haven’t been able to extensively test it with the dock because I do have a desktop that I have been using. I do plan to give it another try though.
      I disagree with your comparison though. From my perspective, I feel like I paid for an lamborghini Aventador and I got a Ford Focus. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with a Focus, it’s just when you pay super car prices you expect a super car. There are tons of other docks and dongles that can do the same thing this can (other then power delivery since Dell locked everyone else out from 130w charging for their laptops over USB-c) for much less money.

    That was a great review, I use this dock for work, connected to a Dell precision laptop, one 4k monitor with type C connectivity, and one QHD monitor with DP, also a bunch of accessories. I am pretty happy with it, it was a hassle to set up, especially to get both monitors working at max resolution though.

But it's also very hard to find some other dock, with similar specs, as these docks. Especially the power output. Ive tried other brands, but i had issues with those too. So... maybe firmware updates will help with the fans spinning up.

      I keep crossing my fingers in a decent firmware update. But you’re totally right, there isn’t another dock that will provide enough power to the XPS laptop due to Dell going over the 100w USB-c standard, at least in the 17 inch edition. So only a dell dock will charge a Dell laptop at 130w.

    I also dock my laptop vertically in a stand. However, I point the exhaust to the top opposite of you. I find that since heat goes up. It would be easier for the laptop to expel heat upwards instead. I also had an issue with the dock fan where it would go at speeds 0% to 100% to 0%. I read it is an issue with the temperature sensor. However, customer support replaced it for me.

    I use the XPS 13 9370 -> WD19TB -> Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen combo. No audio interface problems, zero audible noise, ALMOST no complains at all. That said, here is what didn't like: the dock should have more USB ports (I'm using a keyboard, mouse, yubikey, audio interface, webcam and stream deck). Another thing to mention is that I use the Dell U2720Q monitor which comes with a USB-C Power Delivery hub and, as you can see, now I have two power sources plugged in; within this scenario, the power button of the dock does not work as expected anymore. The solution is not as good as it should be but if you plug one cable in the left side and the other in the right side of the XPS, power button work again (with an odd cable setup). Dock cable on left side + yubikey on the neighbor USB-C port causes the XPS to stop the booting process showing an alert. To the ones that do not use so many USB devices here is my recommendation: look for an "E" Dell monitor which comes with an "built-in dock" (Monitor+USB HUB+Ethernet).

    • @TheTechGuys

      It seems like with these docks it's either great or awful. Not a lot of in between, at least based on the people that are commenting on this video, and the docks that I've seen and used personally.
      For the audio issue, it ended up being a defect in my laptop that was made worse by running the audio interface through the dock. I haven't tried the setup again since I RMA'd my XPS 17. I agree though, it needs more USB ports. I'd think 4 should be a bare minimum for rear IO on any dock. I've worked around that issue by purchasing a bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse to save USB ports for things that absolutely have to take up a port.
      I think if you can get away with having a single desktop monitor and the monitor will supply sufficient power, just getting an integrated hub inside a monitor is an awesome solution. It's one that I'd really like to try personally, as it just sounds so simple, and I really like simple.
      Anyways, thanks for the comment! It's always interesting to hear other peoples perspectives on things like this.

      Do you know what monitors you’re wanting to hook up? Depending on refresh rate and resolution, you may have to hook one directly to your laptop. If they are all at 1080p/60hz you should be fine to hook them up though. What I’d be most curious to try right now is one of the belkin thunderbolt options, although right now they are pretty expensive. I’m currently using the one in the video still. • @TheTechGuys

      Yes the primary issue is that there isn’t a way to dock the laptop such that you can have the screen open for an additional monitor, and not have it overhear while gaming without an additional accessory. When I think about a docking station I think of putting the laptop down plugging it in and having full power with additional accessories, and still being able to “grab and go” as needed. Without additional accessories that just wasn’t the case for this one with my laptop config. But yeah you’re right. That can also be blamed on the cooling of the laptop.

    Nice work-around for the dual external displays on Apple.
    We have an earlier (USB-C 3.0) version of this dock and it was a PITA getting it to work with Mac.

    Connecting a lower-res display would probably solve your audio device. Sounds like the bandwidth is not heigh enough to send the display and the usb data at the same time and it prioritises display data over the rest.
    These dell docks use a different type of sending display data namely the displaylink standard. It works on almost every laptop that uses usb 3.0+ and sends all data over usb. It works like magic as long as their is bandwidth. Even on legacy devices.
    Most non dell docks use alternate display modes on usb-c which separates both datastreams and requires no drivers or anything. However compatibility is very dependant on your laptops usb-c port having those alternate modes.
    Its always something in one-cableland but the dell approach is still the best one i think.

      I think you make some good points. I guess laptop docking, especially with thunderbolt still isn’t exactly “mainstream” which would explain the high cost and the weird issues. I was just hoping it’d be a bit better then it was after using docked system for a few years, ya know?

      @@TheTechGuys one thing I’m really curious about is what the experience on 2 of those at the same time would be. Since the limiting thing is bandwith for these things spreading the load over 2 usb cables should be a better experience. I only have one of these so I can’t test it or find anyone who has tried it. But it might just be the best thing you could get in brand universal docking solutions.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  2 роки тому

      That would be interesting. I’m theory it’s should work as long as your two USB-c ports aren’t sharing the same thunderbolt controller, I’d think.

    • @hellmen54
      @hellmen54 2 роки тому +1

      @@TheTechGuys also found an article from Dell support claiming it should work but they haven’t tried it. If you only have one usb-c controller you could try this with dell D6000 docks since they support both usb3 and usb-C.
      The setup i would have liked to try:
      2x4k monitors with each one connected to a different dock. Internet + keyboard mouse on one side, bandwidth hungry devices on the other. This would split the data evenly over both usb connectors.
      Second one: both displays on a single cable and everything else on the second one. This setup might improve internet and usb quality on the one end and just maybe improve display latency and quality since no other data is send over that cable.
      I have played alot with my D6000, its amazing for as long as there is bandwidth enough on the cable. Great example is if you can remove the internet cable. It provides a real improvement on your display quality. Changing 4k to full hd provides improvements on the network and usb side and so on.
      I almost know for certain that 2 cables will result in a better experience. Its just a matter of separate usb controllers and how well the driver deals with it. But it seems the logical solution since the only limit is that bandwidth.

Could I trouble you to measure the length of the power cable that runs from the wall to the AC adapter, and the length of the USB-C cable that runs from the AC adapter to the port itself on the laptop? I chatted with Dell support on the site and they said 6 meters. I'm sure they meant 6 feet but I also needed the lengths of both cables separately, to correctly measure/plan out where I will mount the dock under my desk. Thanks so much, I also went back and watched your coverage of the XPS 17, it's helping me to make some important decisions.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому +1

      It’s pretty long. I’d wager you’re right in thinking what they meant is 6 ft. I’m not entirely sure that includes the cable from the AC/DC converter to the wall though... Unfortunately, I have it all cable managed right now with channels and command strips. If memory servers right though, I’d say most of the length is in the cable from the AC/DC converter to the dock, with the cable to the wall being maybe 1/3 - 1/4 of the total length. I know that’s probably not exactly what you’re looking for, and if you are still thinking about it next time I rearrange my desk I’ll be sure to get you some proper measurements.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому +2

      It should work well in that setup. But it's very use case dependent. This one is nice because it'll deliver a full 130 W to dell laptops that can take that much power over USB-C, and it's a single cable connection for a USB hub, multiple displays, and ethernet.
      But, if you you're going to use WiFi, a single monitor, and mouse/keyboard depending on what you already have, it might be worth considering using a small splitter (like the one that comes with the XPS 17, and I think the 15 as well) that has a USB port and an HDMI port. Then you could just plug your monitor and a logitech wireless dongle into that and all you'd need to do was hook in that, and hook in your power adapter. It wouldn't be as convenient as just hooking into a dock, but it'd be wayyy less expensive. But that's just something to think about.

      Because if you’re just buying it for gaming you’d be much better off looking into a thunderbolt based eGPU system then you are getting a dock like this. This seems much more meant for enterprise application then it is for enjoying a game. My audio interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which uses either thunderbolt 3 or usb 3 depending on what port your plug it into. I have recently had to switch back to using this dock since my desktop is started to have frequent crashes and i haven’t had time to format it and/or troubleshoot it, so I’ve been plugging it directly into the laptop. Curiously enough it still has the issue with the interface from time to time plugged directly into the laptop, even with a thunderbolt rated cable. I never had the issue on the desktop, so there seems to be some incompatibility between the Scarlett and the Dell. Pretty weird.

    Nice review. Still waiting for my WD19TBS. Quick comment though. One of my key reasons to buy this is power delivery. It seems normal USB/TB3 docks are limited to 100W. A XPS 17 (or 5750 in my case) wants to see 130W. This dock seems to fit that bill (I had not seen any other solution, even eGPU). So I'd assume if you want your external 4K display, wired ethernet and charging with one single connection, this is the only solution.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому

      Yes, only Dell docks will provide over 100w of power to Dell laptops as far as I know. The laptops will still charge off a 100w power source, just not as fast. And other docks (just like this one, it has a 180w power source) have larger then 100w power sources to provide the full 100w to the laptop as well as power other devices. The USB standard for power delivery limits charging to 100w, which is why other docks only supply 100w, and is also why this dock will only supply 100w to non-dell laptops.
      My thinking with an eGPU though is that the GPU in my config is a huge power drain, so losing the extra 30w of power should be in theory fine since it’s not powering the internal GPU. All of this is just guessing though since I haven’t tried it.

    • @thomasroell2049
      @thomasroell2049 3 роки тому

      @@TheTechGuys The extra 30W. A T2000 has a TDP of 40W, RTX 3000 is 60W (same with the consumer parts). The other interesting thing is that PD into a USB dock is 100W. The dock usually takes out 7.5W to 15W. So you end up with about 85W to 90W to the laptop itself. So one of those cheap USB docks off Amazon might not be the best idea for this class of laptop.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому

      Right. Extra meaning over the standard 100w specified by the USB power delivery specs. My 2060 max q has a TDP of 65 w, so with an eGPU that is powered separately that would free up up to 65w of power. So even with a 15w lose due to inefficiency, It not having to run the internal 2060 more then makes up for the loss of 30w + 15w (assuming dells PD standards are 100% efficient which we know they aren’t). But again I haven’t tested it, so it’s hard to say that’d it’d truly be able to work like that.
      Yeah I agree, solid power delivery is very important. And if you’re going to get a cheap dock it’s probably better to use the power supply that comes with the laptop when you’re looking under a certain price point. I do know people that have had a lot of success with Dell laptops and docks in the 100-150 range though.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому

      Oh sorry I misunderstood the last bit. I thought you were talking about inefficiency but you were just saying most docks don’t output a full 100w too the laptop because they are only taking 100w total from the wall. That’s a good point. Although the only real issue you’ll run into is when you’re running over 85w for hours at a time. Which I still run into with the 130w from the dell dock since the CPU + GPU TDP on my config is over 130w, I just have more hours with the dell dock. But it’s definitely something that’s interesting to think about.

    • @thomasroell2049
      @thomasroell2049 3 роки тому

      @@TheTechGuys Sorry. Got to throw in one more wrench. If you got the T2000 / GTX 1650, then your display output gets always routed throu the iGPU. That means on a non-TB3 setup, your external display is limited to 4k @ 30Hz. The RTX 3000 / RTX 2060 configuration has an option in the BIOS to allow the external display(s) be driven directly by the dGPU, hence 4k @ 60Hz. However that comes at a power cost it seems, even if you don't have an external display attached. So the somewhat compromise solution of using the default power brick and a DA310 will not work (even though DA310 supports USB 3.1 Gen 2, where you'd think there is enough bandwidth available).

    Hey Ryan, I've come across your channel looking for recommendations on this particular docking station for my Dell XPS 13 (9370)
    1.- Do you think this docking station will be enough if I plan to use dual 1080p@75Hz monitors and code with it?
    2.- If my idea is to use my laptop as a sort of "mobile desktop" where I'm not going to play something that much challenging than casual Minecraft, would you recommend it?
    I'm for sure a new subscriber to your channel and I hope you can reply :)

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому

      Hey, thanks for the sub!! To answer your questions:
      1 - I think if you've already got the laptop, the dock can work as a great option. I did a quick google and it looks like your model should have thunderbolt 3, which is the best-case scenario with this particular dock. And if you're not going to be gaming much on the laptop, it does work well as a coding machine.
      2 - What spec did you get? If it has a GPU in it, it'll probably play casual Minecraft. I think the minimum requirements for Minecraft have integrated intel graphics in the list, so either way, you might be fine depending on your quality/resolution goals when gaming.
      My only additional thought is that if you ever want to play something other than Minecraft, you might want to consider an eGPU instead of the dock. But if you don't ever plan to really game on it, then the dock should be more than sufficient.

    It's a shame things are the way they are in terms of weird issues and annoyances. With Apple Silicon, but also laptops in general, laptops are getting powerful enough to replace desktops for a lot of people, but with the docking experience still being so janky in 2023, it feels like keeping a desktop around is still going to be the play for quite some time now.

    Nothing wrong with the dock. It's common knowledge not to attach an audio interface to a hub but directly to an usb port on the motherboard (laptop)..

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому +1

      Perhaps that's true, but it shouldn't need to work that way. The idea behind a docking station is that the USB hub/controller on the dock is no different than the USB hub/controller directly attached to the motherboard. That's the way PCIe USB cards work, and that's the way it should also work over a Thunderbolt connection.
      Also, I've been using the audio interface directly attached to the laptop (Aka the USB controller integrated into the laptop's motherboard) more extensively and it still had the issue, although not as much. So the dock in combination with the laptop must have been making the issue more prevalent, or it was the laptop all along and they've been updating the drivers...
      Side note, saying something doesn't work a specific way based on "common knowledge" doesn't mean that it shouldn't work that way. There are no manufacturer instructions/warnings/etc that I'm aware of on the Scarlet or the docking station that say "don't connect these two things", which means it should work, and the fact that it doesn't would be considered a "known issue" at best.

    I've never been a fan of these types of docks, and they aren't really docks in the strictest sense but glorified USB hubs. I much prefer the actual docks that a laptop sat on top of and used a dedicated docking port. This setup had a slightly larger but single footprint and you didn't have to use a usable port just to use more of the same ports, which seems counter-intuitive in a way. The proper dedicated docks also worked seamlessly with the laptop models they were meant for, without the need for updating firmware/drivers and without certain ports having limited functionality depending on what laptop you used them with. All of that being said, there'd be no need for docks and hubs nowadays if there wasn't the insistence on stupid thin laptops with barely any ports. Docks and hubs are almost essential right now for getting any connectivity from a modern laptop at all, which was never the intention.

      These laptops had the E-Port Replicator Docking Stations that seems to connect directly to the motherboard - like a motherboard extension - safe secure and easy to use. A dedicated docking station on the desk too. Small foot print
      I still have 4 of these laptops because I spec’d them out with SSD’s at the time with 8gb of RAM or more with 4 docking stations still running like beats and if latest software supported windows 7 I would still be using them.

      Indeed they interface directly to the motherboard through a dedicated connector, meaning no firmware or drivers needed (and therefore no issues either) and no taking up existing ports... which I always found ironic. No trailing cables, more integrated footprint, and no limited functionality depending on which USB port you use.
      Some of the even older D/Port docks that go with the Latitude Dxxx series and earlier models in the Precision M4xxx series even go so far as having their own built-in power supply unit and graphics cards. They're basically a mini computer in their own right.

    Lately, Dell's product quality has been atrocious. I have an XPS 17 where the video memory is failing. A $CDN2000 repair since the motherboard has to be replaced. and the docking station I have has its USB port fail after 13 months. My XPS 13 has had to have its screen replaced twice one under warranty and the second was a $600 replacement after 15 months. My G5 fans mysteriously have started running at full speed since I had to have the keyboard replaced after an unexpected failure of the G key. Another $400 repair. Dell cannot solve the fan issue and suggests replacing the motherboard, keyboard, and screen for $3500 otherwise they suggest I live with it since it's no longer under warranty after two years. Dell's strategy seems to be to buy it once and pay for it twice in repairs.

      The data rate for the two monitors shouldn’t be overwhelming the specified 40 Gbps TB3 has to offer. • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  2 роки тому

      I would like to, but I don’t have the equipment necessary to record this particular sound accurately. So I think talking about it is much better then just not saying something. That way if you’re not too worried about the noise you can order it, test it, and keep it or send it back depending on how annoying it is to you. But if you’re someone with sensitive hearing, you’ll know up front it’s probably not for you.
      I feel like i did go into it, but it’s been long enough I can’t remember. With Gaming it overheats unless you put it on a stand, and it drains the battery even while on the charger, limiting your gaming session length in triple A titles.
      Video editing, it struggles to render the video during playback in premier pro. I had to render in to out to get it to playback smooth which is okay for a $500 desktop, but inexcusable on a $3000 laptop. Also the same clips worked fine on my desktop at the time (7700k, 1060 6GB, Intel NVMe we’re the specs). Rendering also took longer then on my desktop despite the increased core count, and better listed turbo. That being said, I had to RMA my laptop and they had to fix quite a few things in it and I haven’t tried video editing on it since. But gaming does still produce the same issues.

    I use the WD19TB for my work laptop and before that a D6000 which is now connected to my Mac Mini purely for cable management. The Mini and Lat 5501 sit in vertical stands on the desk and both docks are under the desk. I have three Dell U2415 displays running, 1920x1200@60Hz, an audio interface (albeit a cheap Behringer UM2), drives and video capture running through both as well as networking. I have never had an issue other than when I first got the D6000, I had to update the firmware and Teams screen sharing on the D6000 will only share windows not an entire screen.
    Mobility is not a requirement for me, I just like as few cables visible as possible so the docks are ideal. Compared to others that I have tried; Lenovo's gen 2 thunderbolt 3 dock and Caldigital thunderbolt 3 dock, the Dells perform much better and are far more compatible IMO.

    The Mac display issue is Apple. The don't support MST that is needed to use multiple ports on a dock. You can work around it by putting one in displayport and driving the other off the TB3 through port. TB4 docks work like a hub so should avoid this,

    Sharing - I have the wd19tb running on 3 dell monitors on a dell laptop from work.
    In-general I like it. It is my first dock (in the thunderbolt generation) so I don't have anything to compare with.
    I think the use-case is more for enterprise productivity.
    I don't use SD cards or such - these are ports that the dock doesn't have so all good there.
    Notable negatives:
    On Windows pre-boot the USB is not working so i can't use my keyboard connected to the dock to type in a password for bit locker. I either have to connect my keyboard directly to the laptop temporarily or open the laptop temporarily to type the password which defeats the purpose of the dedicated power button. Tried a few BIOS configuration from forums and I haven't been able to solve it (yet).
    I plugged a Macbook Air 2018 and I haven't been able to use multiple monitors, it's all mirrored. Maybe i'm missing something there.
    Notable positives:
    Dedicated power button for Dell units. No need to flip open your laptop.
    I didn't encounter any annoying noises, maybe the video's unit is a lemon so best not to generalize.
    I like that there are neat options to mount it - in particular 3D-print options to mount under the table for cleaning the desk.
    Thanks for the video, sorry to hear that it wasn't what you hoped.

    The Dell Latitude E5000 series of laptops from 2015 to 2018 before Usb type c docking was the best
    These laptops had the E-Port Replicator Docking Stations that seems to connect directly to the motherboard - like a motherboard extension - safe secure and easy to use. A dedicated docking station on the desk too. Small foot print.
    They can’t be beat.
    I still have 4 of these laptops because I spec’d them out with SSD’s at the time with 8gb of RAM or more with 4 docking stations still running like beats and if latest software supported windows 7 I would still be using them.
    I’m going to retire them only because I want the same Dock setup across all my desks.
    I have the new laptops from 2 from 2018 - 1 from 2019 - 2 from 2021 and 2 I just ordered for 2022 all using The Dell Dock WD19 over USB-C or the Dell Dock WD19TB over Thunderbolt
    Guess which docks just work better for an office.
    The old ones. They can’t be beat.

    Wait a minute... this guy us whining about lags in GAMING and VIDEO EDITING while using a dock? He kinda answers his own question right there. How about a real review where a normal person would use this dock? Ya know, a mouse, kb, a couple monitors, an ethernet connection... No gamer or editor will have a setup like this. Move on... Nothing to see here.

    • @TheTechGuys
      @TheTechGuys  3 роки тому +1

      Admittedly gaming isn’t the intended use case for this laptop, or for this dock. However, you’re extremely incorrect when you say it’s not for video editing. The laptop I purchased (which this is the Dell recommended dock for) is the Dell XPS 17 CREATORS EDITION. It’s marketed at people that are creating. And those are the other three use cases that I cited in the video. Creating photos/videos, creating 3D Models using CAD (Fusion 360), and creating software. I have almost exactly the things you described hooked up to my dock. A mouse, a keyboard, a couple monitors, ethernet, and in addition to that power to power the dock and the laptop. And, since it’s doing all those things and ran me about $250, I expect it to work VERY well, since if it’s just those connections you listed (not power delivery) I’m after, i can order a USB adapter with all those connections for like $30 on amazon.
      I will never understand why it is people go so defensive about someone else’s product. Like, do you work for Dell? Do you have some type of major stake in Dell as a company? Do you work for dell, and you designed this dock or something? What’s the deal here?
      “GAMING and VIDEO EDITING” might not be YOUR use case, but that definitely doesn’t mean it’s not what this is for. But, with your crappy attitude I’m perfectly fine with you moving on to somewhere else.

      In the beginning, I thought the same, but he always argued that this is based on his dedicated use-case and experience, and it's not representative for other common business settings. So, to be fair, it might be really an issue for him, in particular, with the audio device where the Thunderbolt-bus could really reach its limits.
      In casual business settings, for which it is primarily defined, you can expect a fantastic solution. I mean, it's Dell! And their main customers are business users. I use Dell dockings + mobile workstations since approx. 13 years, and except for the precision M4500 series, they are remarkable good business notebooks with lots of power and functionality! And together with the docking, they have a huge utility.
