Why is it necessary to "Object to Path" then "Ungroup" then "Union"? When you "Object to Path" the text, isn't that already a union?

Good question! Before Inkscape 1.3, when this video came out, Object to Path would turn all of the letters of a text object into separate paths, then group them together. But now it just combines all of the letters into a single path.
