Sea Beasts did well financially and critically, but it still feels kinda underrated. In my opinion, that world is so well realized, imaginative, and beautiful, watching it gave me the same feeling I had watching How to Train Your Dragon.

If I’m being honest, that’s how I felt when watching it too. Except the first HTTYD movie worked, because there really wasn’t that much of a villain to be begin with. With the Sea Beast, I feel like them, needing to add a villain into the movie felt very hacked on, as we never even see what caused such motivations to begin with.

Eh, the young girl character was difficult for me to root for because of her personality... I remember not buying her moral voice of reason speech near the end of the movie that the director tried to shoehorn in because she had been such an immature rude annoyance throughout the whole rest of the film, so it felt super out of character and unrealistic for me. As for the rest of the film I thought it was...meh. Not as revolutionary and as interesting as id have liked it to be. It didn't feel as climactic as it wanted to be. But I agree with others in saying its miles better than wish.

One thing I love about The Sea Beast is that Red is allowed to remain wild.
Like, movies and shows such as How To Train Your Dragon, or The Croods, or Pokemon all have the theme of "these giant creatures aren't evil monsters, they're just misunderstood and peaceful beings!" But then...they make pets and companions of them and show all species as able to be domesticated and tamed, and it's honestly kind of weird how pop culture sees the opposite of "destructive evil monster" as "tamable trainable pet material" with very little middle ground?
I like the vibe Red gave in this movie. She's not a murderous monster, just an innocent animal living her life, but at the same time, she is not a pet, or even a friend. She is a wild creature who at most tolerates the protagonists, who have no control over her when she decides to retaliate against a percieved threat. And at the end she doesn't become a loyal companion like Toothless does, but rather returns to the wild with no further contact: an untamable, free creature best appreciated from a respectful distance as all wild animals should be.

No, what's depressing is knowing the animators try their hardest and either know it's going to be a flop, or believe that something is going to change that this is the one to bring them out of the hole of criticism.
The main problem isn't the animators, but instead the Disney CORPORATION.

probably just because of our "creative environment" being flooded with remakes and sequels no one really asked for. when we're always seeing "the same things all the time" then we become very tired of seeing similar themes and characters is all. thats just why there needs to be better marketing budgets for projects that are really worth their salt; so that they can speak over disney's nuisance money and get the attention and praise they deserve!

I like the cute monsters, but I think Red specifically should have been scarier. Like, with all this hype about how she’s the most dangerous thing in the sea, you’d think she’d look a little more dangerous, even the concept art looks better than what we got. The lack of detail makes her look smaller than she is and it’s hard to take her seriously

The monster called the brickleback that’s killed in the beginning seemed far more threatening than Red with all the tentacles/arms and tough plating and super sharp looking teeth. @@Scriptkitty-sd8dp Its a bit different from "Because it is easier". I'd say that the reason that people are violent towards the unknown is because there's a survival instinct as well as a desire for creating order out of chaos. That what we know we can tame, make it fit into our ideal of the world. That what will not fit can be removed. Seldom people actually leave their environment alone, and when they do it is because the environment is too dangerous to just go out. The unknown? That is a danger to the Order. You can't fit it into the Order, and more often than not the Unknown is going to kill you. Our civilizations got to the point where we are because of the numerous deaths that braved the unknown, that tried new things and paid for it. So... rather than trying to utilize it and risk getting offed, the cautious people will instead try to kill it. If they don't, at worst the unknown might very well come back and kill them anyway. In the best case scenario it eats away at people because it could to exactly that anyway in the future.

One of the other details in terms of Crow losing everything is that he also lost his ship too; Red fell on top of and crushed it when she was trying to get back up, so not only did he lose his crew and his adoptive son, he also lost the ship that he had for years.
There's also the interesting bit that when Red grabbed Maisie during the scuffle she knew how gentle she needed to be without crushing Maisie's foot, because lets face it, Red could've easily done that if this was her first time interacting with people in a more positive way. It makes you wonder if she had a positive interaction with another person before, or else how would she know what's the right amount of force to not hurt Maisie?

I think that it would have been better as a series, because not only would we have seen more positive interactions with different beasts, but also thicken the overall plot and ending. Also, it would have permitted the people to be more empathic to the characters and their development in the relationship. It would help the plot twist that, for me, was a bit out of nowhere (and the fact that the girl was able to convince everyone in about 15 minutes or so). So yeah, still better than wish tho...

The only problem with sea beast imo is the middle of the plot and it ties in the movie- where the witch came in. THERE WAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL and the animation of the moving tattoos were awesome.

I watched Sea Beast one day on vacation at Long Beach, Washington and late at night, I was watching some Netflix. I passed by this movie while checking out my options and from the surface I thought the movie would either be a fun, but lackluster movie, or a complete clone of Httyd with zero heart. But after watching the whole thing, both of those opinions were devalued completely. I lost those opinions in the first 10 minutes of the movie. The art, the characters, the story, all way better than I honestly thought they would be. It was a genuinely amazing movie, and I'm glad I came past it.
Also from recent reports, I heard it's getting a sequel. So I am extremely excited to see that.

I don’t read much philosophy, probs bc 90% of my generation don’t touch books. But ur vids open up so many perspectives that are normally hidden or turned around by media, propaganda, beliefs or social constructs ect. And u do it in a very entertaining way by using movies and an energetic/engaging personality that it lets me enjoy my spare time without making me feel like I’m half studying.
TLDR: Love the vids, keep it up❤

3:53 I actually felt like Red’s design was smart, as it pulled on actual natural designs of large ocean animals (whales, etc). Especially since the movie feels like it’s riffing on Moby Dick, so the Whale motif works

Honestly I found the theme of ‘living a great life and dying a great death’ really interesting (considering it’s a freaking kid’s movie). Nowhere in HTTYD you’ll see a deconstruction of the cult of the hero and glorification of sacrifice.

I really did like this movie, very well done movie. My only real complaint is that the ending kind of came out of nowhere, and I feel like it could have had better build up for it. We didn't need the witch part in the movie, it was really weird. It would have been more interesting if Crow had pretended to sympathize with Maisie about the beasts and take advantage of her bond with red, so that he could lure red into a trap. Only at the end would he self reflect and realize his wrong doings. Idk I'm not sure what would have made the ending better, but it just kind of fell flat compared to the rest of the movie

I really wanted to like this movie more but too much of it felt like rehashed scenes of Treasure Planet and HTTYD for me to properly get invested, particularly so towards the end. The beginning however is absolutely phenomenal and feels the most well developed (I wish Red had more design motifs taken from historical monsters like the Brickleback got to, though the scene of her descending was perfect)

I recently watched this kovie and really lived it, and was sad it wasn't being talked about more. I think the best thing about the story is that it completely went against my expectations, I even cried a bit at the end. I felt for all the major characters, and by the end I cried.
Again, really sad to see such gems of animation not properly advertised, they could be such classics. Lost Ollie is a perfect example of the same thing (a miniseries, a little dark for kids but it had me sobbing by the end, really gorgeous show.)

Only critic I got of this movie is the red queen or what's her face looks too.. plushie like?
She's way too smooth and round and whatnot for it to really sell the whole her being the biggest threat out there plus next to all the other monsters she sticks out due to the smoothness and roundness
The other monsters are very.. well monster looking
Yeah she's absolutely massive but I'd have loved if they made her sharper, more scarred and just overall more cool and less cutesy

Also fun fact, I' live in the south of France and the aesthetic of the castle in the royal capital is very similar of the aesthetic of the Oceanografic Museum of Monte-Carlo.
