He was so good in the Truman Show, and it was marketed like a comedy but you watch it today and it is legitimately horrifying. But yes, he really gave the Grinch as a character a lot to think about.
I guess because it went a bit far from the book but tbh it was great especially too that little girl who played Cindy Lou grew to be a rock star artist. While the Cat in the hat was just straight up trash
RIGHT? I know some people who just think it's a dumb kids movie. But like Pig said, this movie has layers, peeling them back and really understanding what the movie is trying to say is the best part. It's my favorite Christmas movie and it still makes me laugh. Pig's breakdown of this movie is also superb.
Wow, I never thought about the fact that everyone buys gifts and the Grinch is the only one who made one and honestly ANYTHING. As a kid, you get this lonely man vibe of him living off of garbage, but as an adult you see, it's not garbage as much as it is the consumerism that quickly passes and the "presents" they get gets tossed.
I love the idea that, obviously Cindy wasn't stupid in the movie, or even that naive, and so when she saw the Grinch, she knew it was him immediately, but humored him to let him feel better and because she was tired of the materialism too.
Surprised he didn't talk about how the movie shows the Grinchs strength. Like how as a kid he could pick up a tree with ease, and when he's older he easily picks up Sindey Lue. Showing how much stronger he is then everyone else
To be fair, I feel like it's more of an emotional thing, he only picked up the tree when he was mad and he couldn't stop the sleigh until he was desperate enough to save Cindy Lou
The theme of commercialization actually fits well with the story since Dr. Suess’ inspiration for the Grinch was his dismay towards the commercialization of Christmas along with his wife’s health problems at the time.
You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that there are others who like The Grinch. I loved this movie, still do and always will. I consider it one of my favourite Christmas movies, next to Elf
As much as I love Elf, The Grinch definitely rivals it for me. Especially the ending, with all the Who's singing in unison with the Grinch in his cave, slowly then quickly panning out of the snowflake. Such a beautiful and hopeful shot.
I'm sorry, but I really, really REEEEEEEALLLLY do not like this one. U can like it, I'm not gonna try to make you hate it, but I think it's just best to just stick to the book and 60's short
@@leonardosomma4196ell yeah the books are definitely better and the cartoon was also really good but this is probably the best live action Dr Suess movie imo especially with Jim Carry’s Proformance
@@heisenberg6142 fine, I'll give reasons. U can disagree, but here are my reasons. The film is ugly to look at, it's not funny, everyone is unlikable, Jim Carrey as the grinch wasnt the right casting, and it doesnt try to build on the ideas of the dr seuss book like PIG said it does, it ACTIVELY DOES THE OPPOSITE of the source material, taking creative liberties is one thing, but to actively do the opposite of the source material means ur just going to fail in every way he source material succeeded
@@leonardosomma4196 I mean ugly to look I disagree I thought all of the practical effects and set pieces were amazing, comedy is subjective so neither of us are right there, I think Jim Carey was a perfect casting because he was actually able to pull of a great performance under all of the costume and he’s just a naturally flexible person who can do a lot of weird faces n shit, and yes it’s not like the source material and obviously it’s not rlly trying to be
I always identified with this version of the Grinch, his story and character. The Whos are terrible people. Jim Carrey went all out, he really cared and it shows. To be in so much pain discomfort and still give that performance. Nowadays it'd probably be done with CGI but imo they really did a great job allowing for all of his expressions to shine through. The thing I didn't like is the design of the Whos, they honestly make it harder to watch having to look at them. At least they didn't put Taylor through those prosthetics.
0:26 I gotta say rewatching this as a 21 yr old, after growing up from as a child it definitely hits different and harder. It has do much build of character, complexity, emotional impact, and conflict. I don’t know why people say it’s not so good, it’s definitely one of the best Christmas films ever.
Actually, the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" from the Chuck Jones special was actually sung by Thurls Ravencroft, the vocalist for the Haunted Mansion song and the voice of Tony the Tiger.
So funny story. It was family christmas for us one year, and all us siblings got together, and watched this movie. We were cracking jokes, having a good time, until one of us said, "Hey, do you think there is Cindy Lou and Grinch fanfiction?". We quickly fell into the rabbit hole of it, and it's one of my most memorable christmas' to this day.
Really? Dog ass kissing, shoving ur face in a woman's breast, and a dirty, polluted, ugly looking city makes this the BEST version of the story, OVER Dr. Seuss' book, AND the Boris Karloff one? Like, I'm glad u like it, but.........REALLY!?
I absolutely LOVE this movie, I watch it all year round just for Jim's performance. I've also made the same comparison between this and Cat in the Hat, it's less about being faithful to the source material and more just a skit show based loosely on the characters which in my opinion is what makes them so good, you've already got a simple, well known narrative now just jam as much goofy shit in as possible. Jim and Mike were also perfect fits for this kind of slapstick teetering on stoner comedy, they've got that Nick Cage thing where the more they ham it up the better it is
Sorry but that is bullshit. There is not one part of this that says it's a skit show. It's literally trying to capture the feel of the source material, if it is trying to be a skit show or parody, it fails miserably! I don't care what the guy in this video says, this film objectively sucks! It is obviously trying to be faithful to the book, and it adds things that didn't need to be in the story, and are not what the story is all about. This is a bad film. I am really tired of all this needless praise!
I will always think the reason why the Mayor bullied the Grinch is bc he was jealous that the Grinch could grow facial hair and he couldn't. He still doesn't have facial hair as an adult
15:18 also another thing about the grinch having a dog. Is as most Dog owners know, u have to be very selfless when taking care of a dog and u have to put the dog over urself sometimes. Which shows that even tho the grinch tries to be mean and secluded he still takes care of max
I agree 100%. People usually give me the "are you serious" look when I say that the Grinch is THE Christmas movie so it's nice to see some people on the same side
I wouldn't say they improved the grinch as a character. They pretty much just offered an alternative take for him. A person who hates something because they've never experienced it properly is about as realistic as a person who hates something because they associate it with trauma.
I definitely agree. The Grinch in the book was the wrong one as he associated the holiday with materialism and felt like the Who's only celebrated for surface level reasons. Once he stole Christmas he expected the hear the cries of being proven right. However, the Who's celebrated the holiday anyways. They knew there was more to Christmas then just gifts and toys. They understood the true meaning of Christmas and as such the Grinch no longer hated them. His heart grew three sizes as he can now finally appreciate the Who's. Compare this to the movie where time and time again, the Grinch gets proven right and instead of just being a redemption for the Grinch, it's a redemption for the entire town as they now have to learn the true meaning of Christmas. I'd say this take definitely works better for a full length film as the focus isn't just on a single person but an entire town.
I kinda have to agree this Grinch is superior. Of course the og animated short will forever be iconic, but everything felt more fleshed out in this version, especially the Grinch. In the original, he seemed like he was just written as “Oh he hates Christmas, moving on” but in the live action he has soooo much more personality (it also helps that it was Jim Carrey playing him) and even Cindy felt more fleshed out as a character. The animated one tried to imply she had a major life changing role only for her to have one line of dialogue, but the live action made her one of the main characters and actually motivated the Grinch to lift the sleigh as it was falling
You people will never understand why this movie is bad and why the original is superior. The grinch being the bad guy in the original was the point! This movie just takes all of that and turns it into a generic bad guy is secretly good, society and people are bad message. Cindy didn't need to be any more major than see was in the book. It was a short story! She didn't need to be anything more major! Plus, the Cindy in this movie was pretty generic and boring in my opinion. We can't just have her be an innocent child who just loves Christmas, it has to be the generic independent, voice of reason, child character. The who's being the real bad people in this movie is also bad. It is against what the book is, it is very derivative, and it DOES try to act like it is being faithful to the source material, while actively going against it. This is a bad movie.
This movie gets better with age. I think that it was way too over-hated when it came out because of its different direction, but people are just starting to notice the brilliant aspects of the film. The main one especially being Jim Carrey’s excellent performance as the Grinch.
“You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” was performed by Thurl Ravenscroft. Who, in addition to having a dope ass name, is also the original Tony the tiger. You also may recognize his voice as the booming bass in “Grim Grinning Ghosts” on The Haunted Mansion. An absolute icon imo.
The best scene in this movie is when everyone is feeding the Grinch pudding and one of the whos says "this is not pudding" shoves it in his mouth. Then then the Grinch spits it out and says "what is it!?"
I wish this video came out 12 hours earlier because I JUST had this discussion with my family on why it's the best. Could've used all this supporting evidence :P
I actually just finished watching the movie when I noticed you did a video on it. I didn't know Jim had gone through all that THAT bad. I just knew it was difficult, damn. :[ at least it wasn't all for nothing. he gave it his all and it turned out SO good that I highly doubt anyone would be able to top his performance as the Grinch. Kudos to the director for trying the Grinch costume even just for a day to understand. shows he truly cared about the people working on the movie with him. also, I literally just now, this year, realized it was a Swingers party once I noticed the bowl full of keys. it reminded me of this episode of That 70's Show, where I first learned about it. also, I think its awesome Taylor grew up to front a hard rock band. I'm actually a fan of The Pretty Reckless. my current favorite song by them is 'Only Love Can Save Me Now', among many others. her voice has gotten so much better.
I still remember lining up at the cinema for this movie, probably the first one I went to. There must've been like 150 people there, idk of a bigger Christmas movie release since then. Maybe elf on DVD? Idk, this one was an instant classic
also one easter egg that was implified in movie, Cindy was target of bullying because her nose didn't grow like everyone elses. That implifies her child innocence unlike other Whos who are completely materialistic and basically craving for gifts. In my country we have proverb about extremely prideful people. (pride in this isn't portrayed in good way but in meaning of Seven deadly sins like meaning of pride) "You can spot prideful peaople by their proud nose." that means these people always look down on people and it's shown when they points their head slightly to sky and their nose it pointing that way "above" these people. You can watch really great Czechoslovak fairytale film called "Proud princess" from 1952 and you would understand.
I’m glad you pointed out that the Grinch hand made the gift for Martha himself. It always means a lot to me personally when I make a gift, or am given a hand made gift so hearing you touch on that was appreciated.
So glad this movie is getting appreciation as a genuinely good movie, not just for nostalgia. The motivation for the Grinch always made sense to me as a kid and I liked how the Whos had to learn a lesson as well instead of just being completely unfazed about the Grinch's theft in the original book and animated special. I also think Jim Carrey's hammy performance makes perfect sense: he's a dude who's been stuck on a mountain for years and is going nuts from the isolation and hatred in his soul. I never got the critics who said "HIS PERFORMANCE NEEDS TO BE REIGNED IN!!!!"; did they think someone in that situation would be calm and collected?
I have no clue why I love this man explaining movies and rating them. Like I've seen all the movies but I have to watch him explain them to me for me to actually enjoy them.
It's really ironic. I was watching XQC going to universal studios and there was a moment where the guide was showing them where Max the dog was so they can see him. When they got there, there was a line of people waiting to take a picture with Max, who was an ACTUAL REAL DOG. Someone from X's group even commented how the dog was annoyed by the antlers and how the workers kept forcing it on him. There is just so much irony in all of that considering the points that come the movie. Also proves how pathetic humans can be to wait in a line to take a picture with a dog just because he looks like the one fr4om the movie...
Dang, this video really changed my outlook on the film. I always thought that it was a bit corny or something, but with your input, I’ve gained a greater appreciation for it. Thx for making this👍

Something that a lot of people don't know is that while, yes, Boris Karloff narrates the Grinch and voices him, he does NOT sing "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch". It's actually sung by Tony the Tiger's voice actor, Thurl Ravenscroft.
Fun Fact: in an extended version of the Grinch, the lights contest happens and it says on the card that Cindy's mother won but he decides instead that Martha May won being a complete liar and I actually love that scene because it shows how shallow the Mayor is that he would lie about who won the lights contest just so he could get with Martha May
While I genuinely hate the mayor and some of the jokes are cringey, I really like this movie. The sets look nice, the makeup, especially in the Grinch, was outstanding, the VFX surprisingly hold up well, the acting was good, Jim Carrey was outstanding as the Grinch, the score is great, most of the jokes were funny, and there was some heartfelt moments. I love watching this every Christmas
I think one of my favorite scenes in this movie is the one where he’s at the post office throwing the letters into peoples mail slots and going “Jury duty! Jury duty! Blackmail for you! Jury duty! Pink slip!”
As a kid and preteen in the early'00s, I swear there was a ton of media that parodied ultra consumerism/materialism. Such as in the OG Powerpuff Girls with Morebuck's character and with the entire world/universe-building of Invader Zim.
Saw someone make a similar comment, but to go into more depth, it took 8 1/2 hours to get him in and out of full costume and makeup, weighing almost as much as him; that’s already 16hr days not including performance and rehearsal times. He underwent CIA TORTURE ENDURANCE training to see this movie thru. That’s reason enough this movie needs to be cemented as one of the greatest grinch adaptations & Christmas movies in general. Doesn’t hurt Carrey was born to play this kind of part, but knowing the literal TORTURE he endured to bring this to us, you better appreciate the shit out this movie. 👏💀
jesus christ, how did i not notice the capitalistic nature of all the character, i never read into that, thats crazy, love the depth you went in on this, makes me appreciate the movie so much more, now i need to go watch this again
Honestly, about the mail room scene, I've always wondered how did Lou not even hear his daughter screaming when that happened? He's just like "You've been practicing your Christmas wrapping." Like dude, did you not hear her yelling?
as someone who has never read the book or even seen the animated classic, i also believe that this is the best christmas movie ever ! the critique on consumerism culture and how commercialised the holiday has become is actually fantastic, the performances are amazing and it’s so incredibly funny ! i watched the caca illumination one last year and it was godawful. the grinch being christmas joker isn’t a take i thought i was ready for but now i believe it and i’m so glad that other people can see the greatness this movie is
Something I find interesting about this movie is that it’s showing fake happiness that people express during the holidays. “Look at how beautiful our house is, we’re such a happy family.”
Theres a scene in the movie that when hes trying to find an outfit to wear, he pulls a white cloth from the table with a bunch of stuff on it, but all the stuff stayed on, and a couple of seconds later the grinch just forcefully shoves everything off 😂 The original idea from the director is that the appliances on the table were meant to fly off the table in the first place, but the director like what the grinch did there and kept it that way
i'm just saying.........the thumbnail is perfect. One of my favorite things about the movie is Martha May generally likes the Grinch even thou the mayor tries buying her off. I like to imagine after the movie she moves in with him and they have a blast dumpster diving every Thursday.
Yes, me too! I'm glad she chose Grinch over the mayor, who is really responsible for everything that has happened, and knowing that she has loved him since school. I like to imagine what can happen after the film, marriage between Martha and the Grinch? Living together on Crumpit Mountain? In her own house? And if he would get one or more babies on quiet nights 😉 I like to imagine their life as a couple.
Also. We know that the grinch basically gets all of his stuff from the dump right? There is a cute theory that he found max in the dump and saved him. Sort of like an abandoned christmas puppy deal
Me and my mom watch this movie every single December as a tradition, I will always love this movie and it gets way too much hate that it gets, it’s not a bad movie, it’s just judged because it’s not an exact copy of the book, which if it was it wouldn’t be as good as it is

It’s my moms favorite movie we watch it every year lol. Honestly was confused on why people hated it so much, I think it’s really charming and fun. Has a lot of character and it’s super memorable.
I love that you included the clip of when Cindy Lou takes his hand at the end and he looks down at her so wholesomely. Makes me laugh every time because it reminds me of myself when my 3 year old grabs my hand to lead me somewhere 😂
The Oscar-winning makeup in this movie is truly outstanding. The sets and costumes really brought Dr. Seuss' world to life like never before. Ron Howard did an awesome job directing this movie, and Jim Carrey was the perfect choice for the Grinch. Infinitely better than Mike Myers "Cat in the Hat" (regret watching that as a kid).
I feel time is the best determiner of quality. Comparing this to the illumination grinch shows how much effort and love went into this film compared to the newer one. Jim carrey is the best part of this and his eccentric acting really helps to give charm and personality. Also Jim does a good job with your a mean one mr grinch chance the rapper mutilates a classic. I never understood why people hated this movie. It's one of the best Christmas movies out there.
I didn't know people hated this moviw
@@pixiestxNyomouf people do from what I can tell. Even more back then than now, but that's because the people that hated it care less.
Lmao I've never heard of someone not liking this movie
Cindy-Lou.
The Grinch is a timeless gem nothing will ever convince me otherwise.
@@leonardosomma4196 so ur not gonna actually give any reasons for ur argument
Grinch is an iconic movie and legendary, no one can capture Jim Carrey as the Grinch!.

Really? Dog ass kissing, shoving ur face in a woman's breast, and a dirty, polluted, ugly looking city makes this the BEST version of the story, OVER Dr. Seuss' book, AND the Boris Karloff one? Like, I'm glad u like it, but.........REALLY!?
Jim Carrey was originally not going to play the Grinch, but rather Jack Nicholson.
Imagine how that'll turn out...

For the love of god that’d turn it into a horror movie
I'm not gonna steal your presents! I'm just gonna bash your brains in!
Probably better
My favorite line from this movie is "PLAY MONKEY! PLAY! Play play play play play!" Followed by him placing his head in-between the money cymbals
“ I want golf clubs, I want diamonds, I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored then sell it to make glue!” Best line in the film.
"His heart grew three sizes that day and immediately shrank six, imploding into a black hole where no love could escape."
Me and my family have a tradition to watch this movie every Christmas Eve together ❤️
When you said "the real villain is-" it cut off with an ad for UA-cam premium, so in my head you said "the real villain is UA-cam premium ads"
That would be spot-on honestly
The best scene in this movie is when everyone is feeding the Grinch pudding and one of the whos says "this is not pudding" shoves it in his mouth. Then then the Grinch spits it out and says "what is it!?"
I wish this video came out 12 hours earlier because I JUST had this discussion with my family on why it's the best. Could've used all this supporting evidence :P
Jim Carrey's comedy always carries a whole film.
This is one of the only Christmas movies I can watch every year, it's definitely one of my favorites
also one easter egg that was implified in movie, Cindy was target of bullying because her nose didn't grow like everyone elses.
The more you age,the more you start to find how relatable the grinch is
I’m glad you pointed out that the Grinch hand made the gift for Martha himself.
12:48 "she looks at the Grinch every time she sees him"
*hmm, yes the floor here is made out of floor*
I have no clue why I love this man explaining movies and rating them. Like I've seen all the movies but I have to watch him explain them to me for me to actually enjoy them.
I totally agree, the scenery could have been more vibrant but it's definitely my favorite Christmas movie!
Finally, someone else who appreciates this cinematic masterpiece for its anti-commercialist message.

I freaking love this movie. I didn't know the fun facts on this movie either. Thanks for giving me that info on the production!
Fun fact: for those who didn’t know, Taylor momsen is in a metal band called the pretty reckless :)

“Look at how beautiful our house is, we’re such a happy family.”
he really did my boy thurl ravenscroft like that
Theres a scene in the movie that when hes trying to find an outfit to wear, he pulls a white cloth from the table with a bunch of stuff on it, but all the stuff stayed on, and a couple of seconds later the grinch just forcefully shoves everything off 😂
The original idea from the director is that the appliances on the table were meant to fly off the table in the first place, but the director like what the grinch did there and kept it that way
i'm just saying.........the thumbnail is perfect.

I know this is a couple years old but thanks for making this.
It’s my moms favorite movie we watch it every year lol. Honestly was confused on why people hated it so much, I think it’s really charming and fun. Has a lot of character and it’s super memorable.
One of my favourite Jim carrey films, the movements and facial expressions he showed are perfectly captured from the classic animation version.
