    I WOULD LIKE TO CLARIFY!!!
    Encanto was a decent movie yes. And so was others I mentioned. I was just saying IN COMPARISON. To the classics they just dont hold a candle. Plus 2D animation is KING. On top of that. They all suffer from the same animation AND generic storylines. Not really saying they are bad. Just saying they are great. :)

      There is a lot better elements, or more enjoyable elements in the older movies Disney produced that still hold up to this day. I didn't have a problem with Turning Red (like most political commenators do) but I thought the delivery, and chatracters were insuffurable and annoying to the point where I didn't enjoy it at all (yes I know they're pre-teens). Also Disney hasn't been able to try something new from their usual movies or pay respects to the olders, so I don't think BionicPig is blinded by nostalgia because there is a lot to critisize. But different people enjoy different things so all the power to you :)@@emmamargaret9297

    Animator here! They actually planned to make a movie about the origin of the song (when you wish upon a star), but higher ups chopped it up into unrecognizable pieces. Also, the art style is meant to “simulate” watercolor, and they refused to do actual 2D animation because there was a “skill issue” amongst their staff 🤦 🙄 they put way too much stock into cgi and now have barely any 2D animators anymore

      Probably because animators-in-training nowadays aren’t given the time or space to train their 2D animation skills beyond the basics. Even tho many students really want to learn 2D, schools don’t offer as many courses in that discipline because 3D has become standard. and they probably don’t have time to teach themselves 2D while working on their degrees

      Disney just oozes corporate middle management meddling now, mostly out of fear, ever since the bottom fell off of their acquisition cash cows because they squandered their potential. OG story probably tested bad or some shit, in no way does a film that look like this cost $200 million dollars without last minute large changes in story and render time. Typical romance wasn't progressive enough. A woman can't be evil unless seriously misunderstood. Do these things matter in terms of the story, of the art? Yes. But some higher up was probably just like, nah, make it work without them. Management is hired to push product, only sees people as numbers, and to make something as mass-marketing appeal as possible means a safe investment with highest returns, because everyone is included and possibly problematic elements are removed. But in trying to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.
      Imagine how beautiful the original story would have been if Disney had used their own animation technology, Deep Canvas and Meander, to seamlessly blend hand-drawn 2D and 3D together into an incredible self-referential love letter, with the romance core of the film being the way they communicate that love between dreams and people. Genius concept. This generic trash we got is so beyond disappointing.

    In Netflix's 'Klaus' they made a spectacular job with the animation (great story too). They pushed the limitations of traditional animation. The creators decided to make the film in 2D, but they also wanted to advance the look, so they developed a new software that adds details like lighting and texture to the characters that make them appear 3D. This style would have been perfect for 'Wish', but Disney is not a pioneer anymore, and even a better animation could not save this garbage.

      The irony in Klaus being more innovative than modern Disney movies is that the movie was written and directed by a former Disney concept artist. Sergio Pablos worked on some of Disney’s Renaissance Era and early 2000s films (Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan, and Treasure Planet.)

      This movie was supposed to be Disney's one final chance to redeem themselves, and they fucking failed miserably. I was extremely skeptical about the movie, while everyone else was hyped to see the movie itself, and it turns out... I WAS RIGHT TO BE SKEPTICAL ALL ALONG! *THIS MOVIE IS ABSOLUTE SHIT!!!* We have learned the hard way this year to NEVER expect anything good from Disney, because what that shows me and the rest of us on this pathetic planet is that Disney is a capitalistic parasite that vacuums up our own hard-earned money for their own selfish gain, in an attempt to become America's largest monopoly and the largest corporate empire in the entire world. All the magic they once had? They traded that magic in favor of profit, profit, profit. Never again will I wish upon a star, and neither should the rest of humanity. Those dreams have long since died the moment they ruined what our forefathers have once stood for. They complete shat on the legacy of all animators in this nation. And I will never forgive or forget any of this! I hope to never again be fooled by the childish hopes that once blinded me when I was younger.

      That’s like what Marvel Comics did for Captain America’s 80th anniversary. They touted this miniseries called The United States of Captain America which was supposed to be a great tribute to Cap and everyone who had wielded the shield…and then they botched it royally. Not only was the story a lackluster, mopey mess that was supposed to be inspiring, but failed, but it focused more on brand new characters. See, they introduced all these cosplayers- I mean, vigilantes- who readers were supposed to elevate to a level similar to a hero who had battled evil and injustice for literal decades. There’s nothing wrong with having new characters and giving them focus in a story, but constantly thrusting new characters into the spotlight instead of the established characters when the series has been touted as honoring those established characters? No.
      There’s also the matter of how the writers and promoters expected us to view these newcomers. They weren’t quite supposed to be at Captain America’s level (because they were inspired by him, which actually is a nice message and tribute), but they were supposed to be viewed as near his level, even being given nicknames like “The Captain America of the Rails” or “The Captain America of Harrisburg”. Let me tell you something. On paper, the theme of “This character was inspired by a hero and became a hero” is good. In reality, however, you can’t just have a character assemble a sloppy costume and then have them go out & tackle seasoned criminals and villains. One of the characters, no lie, wielded a trash can lid as a shield. Does that sound like a character that should be elevated to the same level as The Falcon or The Winter Soldier? Someone with no experience or training is going to get badly injured or killed out in the field. In fact, there was a famous story in which an eager and skilled young man named Roscoe tried to fill in for Captain America and ended up being killed by The Red Skull his first night. I get the message of “Anyone can be a hero if their heart is in the right place!” but noble ideals and a thrown-together outfit simply aren’t enough.

    When Asha first meets Magnifico I thought, "Huh, an actual nuanced conflict?" Because both of them have a point. A king can't give _everyone_ what they want, because a lot of people don't think about the consequences. At the same time, robbing them of the opportunity to chase those dreams isn't a good solution. I thought the movie would have an escalating conflict between two principled characters who by the end would realize their flaws and learn to work together. After all, both want what's best for their kingdom. But no, immediately both of them veer off the tracks of their motivation, and the resolution feels hollow as a result. So disappointing.

    About the Magnifico spilling his guts to Asha about the wishes- thing:
    Why not have him reveal the secret to her, and when she reacts how she does in the film, he just goes "Oh... I was hoping you wouldn't react like all the others." Then he snaps his fingers, she falls through a trap door that has a portal at the bottom, said portal transports her far from the kingdom and in the middle of a forrest. Asha then has to make her way back to the kingdom. Night falls she wishes on a star, said star becomes the Star Boy from the og concept art and he wants to help her. "All the others," btw refers to the other interviewees before Asha that reacted like her. Maybe Asha & Star Boy pick them up on their journey home.
    Maybe it's difficult getting into the kingdom cuz of a magical barrier so all the would-be apprentices have to use their combined magic to break through?

And like you had hundreds of people all winning the lottery, so it ended up being like a tiny prize. And like the dad wanting to be a musician, but we don't see him ever really actually doing anything to be one. So it could have people putting in zero effort into things as they rely on wishes to make things happen. But then since they didn't actually learn it, they can't teach anyone else so skills disappear unless they're specifically wished for. I don't know. I feel like it would have been an interesting angle to go with it. The kingdom's peace relies on the harmony between Stella's wishes and the guidance of the Guardian of Dreams, an ancient sorceress who ensures the wishes are granted responsibly.

Sensing the disturbance, the conniving sorcerer Zephyr, once banished for abusing magic, returns, wielding his dark magic that allows him to grant wishes but at a dangerous cost.
    As wishes begin to go awry, the kingdom falls into chaos. Luna, driven by her desire to fix her mistake, teams up with Sky, a skilled but skeptical guardian-in-training. Together, they embark on a quest to restore balance to Stella's magic before Zephyr harnesses its power for his nefarious desires.
    Their journey takes them through enchanted forests, across perilous mountains, and into the heart of ancient ruins, where they encounter colorful characters like a mischievous wish-granting pixie and a talking celestial dragon who guides them.
    Throughout their adventure, Luna learns the true responsibility of making wishes, discovering that the most important desires come from within. Sky, initially reluctant to trust in the power of wishes, learns to embrace the magic when he sees its genuine impact on people's lives.
    As the final showdown approaches, Luna and Sky confront Zephyr in a breathtaking battle of magic and willpower. Through determination and selflessness, Luna taps into the purest form of Stella's magic, countering Zephyr's dark wishes and restoring harmony to Lumina.
    In the end, Luna becomes the new Guardian of Dreams, entrusted with ensuring the balance of wish-granting magic. With a newfound understanding of the power of wishes, Luna helps the kingdom fulfill its dreams, teaching everyone the importance of using wishes wisely and from the heart. And amidst the starry night, Lumina thrives once more, embracing the magic of Stella's wishes in harmony and joy."

    Disney should make Asha's wish granted by King Magnifico originally, then she slowly finds out the true nature of the wish system(placed by the king), and her wish screws up everything she's trying to fix in the movie(and makes the situation messier). Just so the quote "Be careful what you wish for" will actually make sense. And the relevance for star in the movie could increase since its probably Asha's last resort to fixing the main problem in the movie plot

    Honestly I would've been fine with King Magnifico having a superficial "big bad guy'' reason for being the villain! We don't always need a bad guy to have trauma or a tragic backstory. The classic Disney movies have shown us this! I think I would've preferred that over anything honestly. It's fine to use the Disney classic tropes, especially in the 100th anniversary movie??
    I want over-the-top villains again, I want them to be unashamedly bad. It's fun that way! But they do need some kind of motive that is present throughout the film. King Magnifico is shown too much as a good king, a king just doing what's right for the kingdom, only to then have the quickest switch up that was barely explored because of evil book. There is nothing there. Just blandness, which is truly a shame. There could've been something great if they just stuck to the original concepts.

    In my opinion, Luca was the closest we got to a "classic" Disney film this year. It was able to use both childlike wonder and naivete alongside deep, emotional, and distressing beats to craft an engaging plotline. There was a villain who was a villain from the moment he's introduced because he's just an asshole and not because of some "twist" that endears us toward him. There was a "happily ever after" goal. There was even a reference to a strained/distant parental relationship, which is pretty in line with every Disney character either having a dead mom or completely unseen and unmentioned [though never implied to be dead, making for seemingly absent] parents. It comes down to things as small as the fact that the visuals were vibrant, which seems to be missing from recent Disney films.
    Meanwhile, Wish gives the same energy as those cheap Disney-wannabe movies made in the 2000s & 2010s. The ones with Barbie level graphics quality.

  • @marilucs

    You wanna know how to fix this movie? Simple:
    - make the star a shappeshifter boy and Asha's love interest (like it was in the concep art that they threw away), I know some people dont like it but Disney became what they are by writing romances in their stories;
    - make the goat shut up and give him a decent dynamic with Asha, they barely interact as friends in the movie;
    - make the king AND queen the villains (again, like in the concept art) so we can have our first disney evil couple, with an evil bombastic and dramatic duet;
    - Asha's already Magnifico apprentice at the start of the movie, so they already have a bond and this bond can be shaken when she learns the truth. This way the king would also feel betrayed by her;
    - Better yet make Asha's late father and Magnifico best friends or, even better, BROTHERS. Now they have a bigger connection. And hey, this way Asha can actually become a princess/queen by the end of the movie when the evil king and queen are defeated, since she's their niece
    This movie idea could have worked if they just reworked the script a bit

      I read somewhere online that originally Asha was going to be King magnifico‘s daughter, which would be extremely interesting, because then she would have to discover that her parents are not who she thought they were. But having Asha being the kings, niece would be really interesting, too, because then, technically, she would become royalty/a princess. The next thing that I would change is obviously change the art style of the movie. I think I would definitely make the movie 2d animated. I would hire Alan menkan to do the music and score. If you don’t know who he is, Alan Menken wrote the music for the little mermaid, Aladdin, etc..

    • @TECfan1
      @TECfan1 5 місяців тому +1

      People keep saying to add things from the original concepts but I don't see how any of those things would fix the story of this movie. Having Asha fall in love with the star would just make it more convoluted and unnecessary. The star was only there to help her achieve her goal and then he left at the end once that was achieved.

    I don't think there's a problem with Magnifico having no tragic backstory and him just being "evil for being evil". Just cause they have no generational trauma or something, pure evils can be extremely entertaining characters. Think of villains such as Big Jack Horner, Ursula, Maleficent (before the reboot) etc.
    I think the main issue with Magnifico was not that he was "just evil", rather he had no purpose with being evil. Scar from Lion King was pure evil, but he also had a goal of becoming the new king of the pridelands instead of spending his life in Mufasa and Simba's shadow. Usula was pure evil, but she had a goal of dethroning Triton and ruling over the seas instead of being banished into a small cave on rock bottom. Magnifico was evil, but... like, he was already a king. What did he want to use his big evil green powers for? What is his goal? He kinda reminds me of Megamind who took over a city with all his evil intentions, and then had absolutely 0 idea what to do with it. But unlike Megamind's story, which was basically a redemption/finding yourself arc, Magnifico was written to be just a villain.

    The fact that there’re _so many_ videos arguing that the villain of this movie isn’t even a villain is very telling. And most of those videos aren’t just being funny: they bring up solid points why King Magnifico isn’t evil, at least not at first. He contemplates the ripple effects of every wish he grants before doing so, only granting wishes that won’t damage the community. That’s what any sane and responsible sorcerer should do, and the film paints him as wrong for it? It’s not until the Luma shows up and makes the king feel threatened for some reason that he becomes truly (and inexplicably) maniacal.
    I agree with the reviewers who have argued that Asha should have turned out to be a twist villain. Have her arc be her coming to realize that the king is right, and her “everyone deserves to have their wishes granted” philosophy cannot work in real life. That could’ve been really interesting.

But the king can see he's not actually passionate about music and just wants it for attention. A wish like that would be more useful to someone who actually puts a lot of effort and passionate into music. Which is a good lesson for kids. King is evil sorcerer - takes wishes from all people to become most powerful wizard through wishing for more and more power and gets more land and peasants = more wishes to steal for more power (if sentimental, he stands in the shadow of his brother)
    Girl - her parents are not there -> searches kingdom -> learns about wishes but since everyone wish gets taken its only a myth -> she enters castle -> sees king being evil -> king sings evil king song to his servant dude (sidekick) and his horde (idk some knights) -> evil villain laugh -> girl runs to forest in shock -> finds goat -> finds star -> star has magic but not enough to help girl -> star leads girl to witch hut -> witch there knows about the king, but doesn’t want to get involved offers to teach tho -> girl learns witchcraft and combines star magic with her magic, star dude love story -> they return to kingdom but king is already very powerful -> star gets captured -> witch helps even after she didn’t want to get involved (might die, depends) -> king dies, all wishes are granted -> parents were actually imprisoned cause they found out king was evil, now they are free -> girl gets wish -> wishes star dude to be real dude -> love, end, brother becomes king of this kingdom, like the king in robin hood, and makes everything be great again

Most people who work for Disney are super talented people who are just doing a job to pay the bills, and sometimes their hard work gets watered down, as evidenced here

      Its Tiana + Pocahontas + Esmeralda
      The latter two especially. They were the first characters i immediately thought of when i saw Asha for the first time
      And the scene where she mashes her face looks for me suspiciously like Mulan for some reason

      @@gemstone108they never mentioned artists specifically, i think they meant that since they have a background in art education they had an ocassion to meet Disney employees. Not artists, those rotate and dont get compensated enough while they also usually care the most

      @croissant2882 bc shes brown? That's a stretch. There's a ton of concept art for her so we know they did design work, disney just chooses the most "marketable" designs for everything they produce

      @@amberwingtundrawing776 i didnt sat it because she's brown but now youve mentioned it i think its important to point out that all poc Disney characters are orientalised and always exotic
      They can't just have a story
      And coming back to my point you'd think that Asha would finally be that poc character that can just be, and the story isn't related to their skin color and race (as others as strictly created around their cultures)
      But that's why i say that she's a mix of those 3, she's also orientalised, look at her clothes
      Why is her dress so different from other people in the movie, why are her accessories. She doesn't look local to that town.
      Why does she have a pet goat
      There already was a pet goat. Esmeralda had it
      That's why those 3 characters
      She looks like their mix, not a new character

    The idea of managing and not granting everyone their wishes based on how much it will help or f-up society is a great furtile ground for story-telling how they screw that up is amazing. I mean it is a good way to show how both totalitarian and anarchy is a bad in both extremes, but that is too smart for modern Disney.

    You can look at the film, the concept art, and even the music to see the potential is there, but it just never lives up to what it could be. It's a falling star instead of a wishing star.
