  • Storing Dry Goods In Mylar Bags For Long Term Food Storage
    This is a short 10-minute video on storing dry foods for your prepper pantry and long term food storage. Here I am storing several varieties of beans, rice, sugar, salt, flour, and even dehydrated potato slices.
    I offer tips on using mylar bags, food rotation, and actually using the food you store in your prepper pantry.
    I'll have a complete post on nextstepsurviv... within the next couple of days with more detail.
    Stay safe, aware and prepared,
    Hawkins Out.

    Thank you. This is helpful too see a fully organized pantry in use for both long and short term storage.
    I have been manually writing the dates with a sharpie in blue painters tape on everything so I can get better at rotation my food in my pantry.
    I have also been thinking I will heat my rice in the oven, then cool, before putting it in Mylar bags to kill any eggs or lava.

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  3 роки тому

      I'm glad it helped. Most people recommend putting the rice in a freezer and then allowing it to reacclimate before storing it. I believe this helps reduce any moisture from the freezing. I'm not an expert though, just learning as I go.

    Thank you for the video! I noticed on your shelf you have beans and cornmeal in mason jars with white plastic lids. I am sure these are ones you are using already. I have mason jars and the plastic ball lids. If I took my pasta out of the boxes and stored them that way, how long would they last? I am learning how to can and don't know how to yet. I do have mason jars and that is better then the pasta being stored in boxes, especially since my house gets humid. Can I put oxygen absorbers in the mason jars with the pasta? Thank you for the wonderful video!

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Tara, you're right, I have a bunch of jars with dry food we use often and those are part of our working pantry rather than long term food storage.
      You should have no issues using O2 absorbers with pasta as long as it's completely dry. You never want to vacuum seal foods that aren't completely dry.
      I've gotten a couple of years out of pasta with no issues but I do avoid storing (real) egg noodles long term due to the egg content as a precaution.
      Some things you don't want to us absorbers on (even though they seem dry they aren't dry enough) are brown sugar, brown rice, jerky, dried eggs, dried fruit and vegetables, mushrooms, baking soda or baking powder. There's more but that's off the top of my head.

      The site does provide a contact page and a phone number so that's a question worth asking.
      The company is actually based in Tennessee but, as you know, that doesn't necessarily mean they're manufacturing anything there.
      Keep me posted, it's an interesting question.

    Should popcorn get an oxygen absorber since it has the water droplet that makes it pop or just seal it like your sugar?

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  2 роки тому

      Yep, un-popped popcorn stores well in mylar or airtight jars using O2 absorbers or vacuum packed. I have some in both mylar and half gallon mason jars. Just be sure it's plain popcorn, not the microwave stuff packed in oil. That will go rancid.
      Side note: If you have extra popped popcorn and want it for the next day, toss it in a ziploc bag and keep it in the freezer. A few seconds in the microwave and you're good.

      Honeyville Farms says their's last 10-15 years with oxygen absorbers.
      Honestly, though, I believe it should last for years in an airtight container even without o2 absorbers if you're worried about it. In fact, I know it will because we've had some on the shelf for a few years that we use every now and then and it's perfectly fine. It's just in a gallon glass jar with a lid.

    How long do things last? How do u know what size oxygen absorbers u need?

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  3 роки тому

      That all depends on many factors ranging from what it is to storage conditions.
      I watch videos and research websites whenever I store something new to determine whether or not to use an O2 absorber and which size. Again, the worst answer, it depends.

    How many years will the beans in the mylar bag last and.still cook well?

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  3 роки тому

      We hear anywhere from 5 to 30 years being tossed around but I'm not aware of an actual study to be sure.
      Obviously it depends on how well it's stored and what conditions it is kept but I've cooked both beans and rice that was sealed in mylar for six years without a problem. I'd feel comfortable in keeping it 10+ years. With that said, I still recommend food rotation for the freshest foods with the most nutrients possible.

    • @NextStepSurvival

      Hi Dawn, that's a little out of my expertise but I'd guess nut flours need to be used relatively quick. Nuts have oils that tend to go rancid. Then again, peanut butter seems to last awhile and peanut butter powder lasts as well. Now that I've made things worse, I recommend checking out @raincountryhomestead ua-cam.com/users/RainCountryHomestead I think Heidi has been working with nut flours for awhile now.

      Personally, I'd stick to dry goods with mylar. There are much better and more reliable ways to store water. Sealed plastic or stainless containers would work better than a material that can rupture so easily.

      If things got that bad we won't be here. You must have missed the part about our bugout location. You'll never see that on social media. I'm showing my prepper pantry. We're also well armed, trained and people are always here. We have a top of the line security system with 360 degree camera coverage with motion sensing.
      It would basically have to become a lawless society to spend an entire day carrying hundreds of pounds of food while stepping over our bodies and the bodies of our neighbors.
      We have to be careful to live in the real world, not Hollywood's or that of a post apocalyptic novel.
      Having said that, I'm a veteran that's seen first hand how bad things can get when in the Middle East.
      We prepare and build community. That's the best chance of survival and that can't be done hunkering down afraid someone is going to take what we have. That includes the government.
      I sincerely believe the more people we can help become prepared the better off everyone will be. It's my mission to help others and build community but no one will take from my family.
      We won't be here plus that's just the kind of thing people don't walk away from.
