After you open your oxygen absorbers. Put the remaining unused absorbers in a food saver bag, vacuum and seal. It's like you never opened the package. In fact at that time you can individually seal each of your absorbers.

What a cool way to store the items. I have only seen people take the food item out of it's original bag and then dump it into the mylar. This way is so much faster and a whole lot less messy. Thank you for sharing.

because hubby and i are disabled, and old, (cough... hey you kids: get off my lawn) we prefer to pack no more than 25 pounds in a single container.
hubby would likely be happy packing everything the exact same way, but for me? i like variety: i like to pack items in multiple ways, in multiple containers, so i never have all my eggs in one basket- so to speak.
i have, for example... pinto beans in 5 gallon buckets (24-25 pounds each), with SOME in solid hammer down lids, and one or two in a gamma (twist open) lid.
and in one gallon mylar bags in a big tote like yours (a couple pounds per bag)
and also vacuum sealed in 2 quart/half gallon or one quart mason jars on shelves
we usually use the beans out of the jars for daily use and refill the jars
to be honest i also insist that we divide our wheat, beans, etc so that some is in the basement, some in the pantry room on the 1st floor, and some upstairs... to ensure that a flooded basement or leaky ceiling or something cant get all my food storage, but i have seen too many broken windows, flooded basements and etc in my life.

I've seen people bag things without removing the original packaging. Always wondered if was just as good as without doing that. I bagged up long spaghetti in smaller mylar bag and layed it flat stacked in plastic tub. I do love the singly wrapped oxy absorbers- all companies should do that.

I would think the plastic would degrade. I could see leaving it in paper, but I would hesitate to leave in plastic. I've see food bags for dry goods start to degrade after a few years and who wants that on their food? But it does take away the convenience factor.

    • @nc8524
      @nc8524 2 роки тому

@@paintingtracey true..Im thinking itll be in there for at least few years so would only want the actual food in there. Youd still have to wash out mylar to reuse bc who knows what germs on original container plus slit hole in original bag anyway. I get the convenience factor though.

Very cool way to store the big bag of goods, but like you said, where you put the storage bin/tote, it will stay, too heavy to move. I like it, thanks so much guys! Have a great day
One other tip, don't lay these totes directly on a concrete floor, put on a pallet or something that breathes because concrete has moisture that will seep up to whatever it is touching, then start to mold.

One thing I was thinking as I was watching, my slightly ocd tendencies would make me slip a straw into the corner of the zip seal and suck every speck of air out that I could before sliding that zip shut just as I draw the straw out. I use a vacuum cleaner to get most if not all of the air left in the Mylar bag. I use a small tube (1/4 inch ?) and attachment that came with an air mattress that fits at the end of the Vacuum hose. its better if you can tape it on to try to create a better seal. Some Air Mattress air hose attachments might even fit into your Vacuum cleaners hose? It all depends what size hose your vacuum came with. This method leaves little to no air in the Mylar bag. Thank for the video.
I love it how I always return to you guys when I have a project on the go.
I recently put up five 10kg bags of flour (110 lbs) in one gallon Mylar because I thought it worked out right. I use 12 cups flour for five loaves of bread and 13 1/2 cups from a 10 kg bag fit into five one gallon Mylar perfectly. IMHO
Hard on my one gallon bags though. I only have five bags left.
I placed the flour in the bags loose and had to wipe the sealing part of the Mylar good before sealing with the sealer.
I'm ordering 20, five gallon bags today from my supplier here in Canaduh and 100, one gallon bags with lots of extra Oxygen absorbers.
50 kg of flour is only about six months of bread for this family unit and I want more flour put up. Mind you, I have some already put back but most is in two quart and one gallon glass bottles. I couldn't even give you an exact amount. Only a guesstimate.
Our local wholesalers has half their inventory listed as 'Out Of Stock" and this is unheard of.
I'm still shocked and I'm the one who believes he's prepared. So much for belief.
The store brand flour we normally buy used to be $12 for 10kg and I'm paying $15 now. Get it while I can still afford it.
On the very positive side of things, I'm no longer flying solo when it comes to prepping here in this family unit.
The original bread maker in the family sees what's going on in the world and wants me to make sure there's lots of flour for future bread making. And she's providing the funds to do so. I'll not say no.
The stores here have already run out of flour and yeast once already and she was shocked! Now it's her who brings it up and insists we don't run out.
She's not aware of this new space age technology but I'm showing her how it's done with a simple explanation.
Alright good people, have a great one and good luck.

I also use those black & yellow totes now, they're almost the same price as the rubbermaid types, and they hold up much better for stacking, so it saves me having to build shelves, etc. (bear in mind im in a seismically calm area, though). Many Blessings XD

One other tip, don't lay these totes directly on a concrete floor, put on a pallet or something that breathes because concrete has moisture that will seep up to whatever it is touching, then start to mold.

I took my flour and sugar and vacuum sealed them in regular vacuum seal bags (the flour with OAs and the sugar without). Then i put them into a large rubber garbage can with a lid. I separated them into one and two pound bags. That way i only open what i need and i have smaller amounts for giving to others or trading for something i need.

Mylar also protects the food from light, unlike clear plastic which also protects from moisture and air.
We use a lot of 5-gallon buckets and big plastic water-tight totes. :D

Stick a straw in the corner of the mylar bag after you have filled it and prior to sealing. Iron/ seal up to the corner with the straw. Suck out the air / instant vacuum packed and seal where the straw was as it you pull the straw out.

I like to vacuum the storage bags if possible, after cutting a hole in the inner bag for the O2 absorbers and putting that inside the mylar bag I then use a vac. pump from my automotive A/C equipment and adapt a hose that can be put in the bag at the corner after sealing almost all of the open edge. I realize this is an expensive option if you're buying a new pump, but deals come around and if you already have a vacuum pump then you're good to go.

I’m so glad you posted this video today! I have been having such anxiety about processing my bulk bags of products from Costco. I had bought several Gamma Vittles vaults to store beans and rice, etc. but then thought I needed to use some sort of food grade liner to prevent “plastic taste transfer” from the containers (though they are BPA Free). Using a liner or packing it with single packages doesn’t seem like an efficient use of space inside the container for long term storage. Honestly, the Vittle Vaults seem better suited for bulk pantry refill storage. Becoming overwhelmed I began searching for round bottom bags or other solutions, I settled on just “flat packing” everything, which you both confirmed for me will be the best solution to get the job done quickly! My other concern was heating or freezing everything to kill off any unseen pests before sealing the bags but I see you addressed this with another commenter.☺️
I’m wondering if you could address repackaging foods into smaller portions bought in bulk from stores like Costco? For example I purchased a large bag of dried apple chips and reportioned them into single servings using a desiccant packet and my vacuum sealer. When I checked on them several months later they were soft and had a white powder moldy look to them, I live in a humid climate but that should not have effected the sealed product. I was watching a video from the LDS Cannery and they had apple chips in a #10 can so I thought I could do the same by vacuum sealing? What am I doing wrong? I’m so new to processing foods for long term storage and can’t afford to make any errors this late in the game.
I really appreciate the clear and concise knowledge you both share! There seems to be plenty of videos advising to put food away but not many explaining the what, why, what for or how. Blessings!

Thoughts on apple chips..... Suspect that the ones from Costco were not dried sufficiently for long term storage. Perhaps, the original container had a pin hole that allowed moisture to enter.?? Another possiblility it happened may be too much time lapsed, after opening them before vac sealing. Dried fruits can absorb moisture quickly in high humidity situations. For example, I live in a high humidity area, too. When the outside temperature is near what I set my thermostat, humidity does build up inside my home. Especially when I'm cooking soups or running a full dehydrator load of vegetables and such. Sometimes, even in winter, I switch to AC and drop the thermostat temperature, temporarily, to extract the humidity from the air. I don't have a dehumidifier.
Just some thoughts that may be useful. I live on a fixed income, so I know what you mean about errors. Glad to hear you're becoming better prepared for whatever the future may bring. 👍

Thanks for all the great information! Do you have a sorting method for the contents of the containers you have? I've got a few large tubs of smaller quart and gallon sized mylar bags of all kinds of foodstuffs, and the best I have for keeping track of the contents is listing the contents and quantities on a sheet inside a plastic sheet protector stuck on the outside of the container.

Thank you for a great informative video!! I’m new to long term food storage and am confused about how to store my small bags of peas/beans. I have thirty one pound bags of dry split peas. Should I empty each one out into a huge Mylar bag in a 5 gallon bucket? Or would it be the same protection if I sealed each pound into a food saver plastic bag (emptied from the original thin plastic manufacturer bag) sealed and then put the thirty small sealed bags into a huge Mylar and then into a tote?? It’s just two people so I prefer to keep the sealed bags smaller then stored in the larger Mylar, unless that’s not recommended?
