Prepper Pantry - In Plain Sight Inventory System

  • This is a short video showing a very simple inventory system I use in my prepper pantry. I call it the "Plain Sight" or "Plain View" inventory system because everything is seen at a glance.
    I no longer use apps or notebooks, just my shelving racks, and my eyes. We can see what is missing very quickly and those items go onto our shopping list.
    I forgot to mention in the video that the canned meats are mostly labeled 26 cans for a six-month supply of long-term food storage BUT the cans of tuna need twice that due to their small size. So the tuna needs 52 cans for that six-month food supply.
    I hope this video helps inspire you and give you some ideas to apply to your own prepper pantry or long-term food storage solution.
    I invite you to visit and subscribe to Next Step Survival if prepping and survival are something you're interested in.

      That's sweet Catrina. I'm sure your husband has his strengths too. Girls prep too (I want that on a t-shirt now) so maybe it's up to you for awhile. I do feel it's never been more important in our lifetime. I also want to mention that just a few weeks worth can be extremely helpful should something like a quarantine happen. You probably won't need the amount of food I have.

      Yep, that was a big investment and they're more expensive now. I'd recommend home pressure canning meat. It's actually easier than vegetables when you raw pack because there's little prep work.

    I like your tip about taking a photo of your shelves. It gave me the idea to use my iPAD to take the photo and then bring it with me when I go shopping. I'm notorious for forgetting to write things down on our shopping list. I suppose keeping a pad and pen in the pantry would be helpful, too, especially for jotting down notes, such as which store has the particular products on sale. BTW...Some people claim Soy Sauce and Popping Corn (the ones sold in bags) are "forever" foods. Someone else claimed that pop corn kernels can be planted in the garden. I wonder if it's true and if there are other foods that can be planted, as well, like dry peas, for example. I started a loose leaf binder containing Jan to Dec index tabs. I wrote 2021 on the front cover. I did the same thing for years beyond that. I placed a sheet of notebook paper within each tabbed section. After I get home with another grocery haul, I record the expiration dates under the corresponding tabs in the binders. For example, if I bought Kernel Corn that expires in June 2021, I would grab the 2021 binder, flip to June and write the word "Kernel Corn". I forgot to mention that first I sort everything "by the year" they expire. This keeps me from having to jump back and forth from one binder to the another. After everything is recorded, I then add them to the pantry. Thereafter, on the first day of each month, I look under the tab for that month and check the pantry to see if we still have any of those items in stock. In my 2021 binder, I noticed there are quite a few items that will expire in February, especially boxed goods, such as Pop Tarts, Instant Grits, and Club Crackers. Which is our cue to devour them or donate them before February. This method may sound complicated, but as long as all items are recorded in the notebook AS SOON AS you get home and BEFORE they are placed in the pantry, then you will be able to tell at a glance (by flipping through the notebooks) which items you bought and when they are going to expire. After all the expired items listed under the current month have been checked and pulled, you can then remove the sheet of paper under that tab and use it to line your bird cage floor. LOL Then on the first day of the next month, simply repeat the process of checking the list for that month and pulling any that have expired. On a side note, I suppose you could use a computer to set up this method by creating a folder for each year, and Jan-Dec text files under each year. Come to think of it, the computer method would probably be easier and less expensive. No binders or index tabs or paper to buy. The only thing with using a computer will be if the electrical grid goes down and you can't access your computer and thus your monthly lists. It's easier for me to carry the binder to the pantry when it comes time to check and pull. I might mention that the hospital pharmacy where I worked for 33 years used this binder method and it worked very well. Thanks for giving us a tour of your magnificent pantry! :-)

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  3 роки тому +1

      See, that's awesome you've found the best method that works for you. I love that. Another thing we do is keep a shopping list on a dry erase board I snap a pic of that before we shop as well. One note of caution though- be careful not to set your phone on shelves or walk away leaving it in the cart. I kept catching myself leaving my phone on a store shelf. I actually had to seach for my phone a couple of times.

    • @grinning_owl
      @grinning_owl 3 роки тому +1

      @@NextStepSurvival Like you, I write the expiration dates on the items, which really does help. The dry erase board/shopping list is a great method. My husband uses post-it-notes so he can tuck it in his pocket. We don't have a smart phone, so I would have to use my iPAD to take a pic. But I do like your method. Whenever I carry my iPAD with me (it's a mini one), I wear one of my old pharmacy smocks and slip that baby in one of the big pockets. I hope you have the "tracker"/phone locater set up on your phone in case you lose it and can't find it or someone takes it. There's also an electronic thing called a "Tile" which is used for locating things like keys. I think it can be used for just about anything. I need to attach one to my husband.... LOL just kidding

      That's a tough spot. I was fortunate enough that my wife tolerated me for years. Then the covid came and now she's onboard 100%. We self quarantined for weeks without ever leaving the house and didn't have to worry about a thing. It was almost like a long vacation. We also helped many friends and family members when the stores had lines of people and felt like danger. We felt blessed to be able to donate N-95 masks to our local hospital and Kydex suits to our veterinarian at the beginning of the pandemic. Just yesterday she called to tell me she was buying a case of her favorite chili sauce because we were running low. The case of food was sitting in the pantry when I got home. She understands now.

      Yep, it seems like that's going on all over Looke. Word on the prepper street is stores are preparing for a food shortage and possible supply disruption. That can mean bad news for the unprepared citizen if it's true.
      A lot of us have also noticed stores filling shelves with things other than what goes there in order to hide the fact that things are missing. For example, several weeks ago there was no canned carrots or corn on the shelves at our local Walmart. Not a single can. But there was no space to put those cans if they did have them. They pulled things to the front and spread them out to make it look like nothing was missing. That doesn't mean a conspiracy or anything, I can see why they might do that even in the best of times. It's just something a bunch of us happened to notice.

      I've noticed it depends on what store you shop at. I'm smack dab between two Wal-Mart's. One is constantly empty, but caters to a lower income area. The other one caters to a higher income area and is well stocked. I've also seen some brands spread out that I have never heard of. I went to the store the day my state declared emergency and the panic I saw really freaked me out. I always thought everyone had some type of stock in their home, but I guess not. While people were fighting for canned goods, I was shopping for pillows.

    Well done. I like your simple approach. I've tried inventory keeping and such. Didn't work for me either. Now, I simply try to keep designated areas full of whatever goes into each spot. I put the Best By date, as mm/yy on the front of everything. Makes it easy when shuffling cans, for example to get the newest ones to the back. Makes it easier, at a glance to see what needs to be used soon, to make way for a replacement with a longer shelf life. Especially acidic foods that like to attack metal cans.

      Rosie Rose yeah, everyone would look at it differently. I do know what you mean because, as I prep, I find it to be a cumbersome and stressful distraction from what I actually hoped to be doing. Like, the cans of food I’m tripping over, in the small I have, are simply a constant reminder of how things may be moving towards gloom and doom. Something my parents, with 2 nice houses and plenty of space, never had to worry about. They just lived. As my generation isn’t really doing better than the previous generation, I feel as if I’ve been kicked back to the Great Depression, with the exception of the fact that even more is required by me, even by my mother, because she doesn’t see it.

    • @NextStepSurvival
      @NextStepSurvival  3 роки тому +1

      @@privateprivate8366 Indeed, the pressure is definitely up right now and taking a lot of the fun from life. It's temporary though. In the mean time, look at each container of food as a buffer. It should represent an achievement, not a burden. You're way ahead in the game just by understanding the need and doing something about it. Most people still can't imagine an empty refrigerator. They have what we call normalcy bias.

    • @privateprivate8366
      @privateprivate8366 3 роки тому

      NextStepSurvival I understand what you mean. But, speaking for myself, it isn’t temporary. It’s a trend.
      I spent 8 years trying to climb out the recession. Subsequent to that, my feeling has been, if another recession were to come along, I don’t know if I could make it. For me, “making it” doesn’t simply mean I have enough money and food. I wanted to thrive. Not have so much energy and time devoted to surviving. Yet, for me, I’m barely 4 years out of the recession and we have this complete disaster, that appears to worsen daily. It is Sisyphean. You can never do enough. You can never prepare enough to get back to the things that we’re successes for you and that you enjoy. I don’t even like the fact that, while I’m stressed and preparing, probably 100% of the people I know aren’t preparing one damned thing. They are simply living. Things may go wrong. Things may go right. But, I know that the way things have gone have turned life into absolute mockery of itself. The way things are and what the trajectory seems to be, I’m not quite sure that I want to be as part of this dystopian future, just because I happen to have food in hard.
      Sorry to be a Debbie Downer about it. But, that’s the way I feel and I’m tired of my life being turned into some flaming emergency. This is doubly and triply so, because I know the world expects of me to take care of my mother when she will need it. Sorry but, this generation has to work far harder, for far less so, I’m done.

      Both water and honey are forever foods as long as stored correctly and protected from contamination. They simply don't go bad. There may be an issue if kept in plastic but I believe that depends on the container. • @NextStepSurvival

      We eat what we buy but not as much canned foods as it would seem from what's in our pantry. That's the beauty of canned goods, they don't go bad as long as they're stored properly and undamaged. The best buy date isn't an expiration date, they'll last for many years. We do go through a lot of canned vegetables during the winter and spring months when our garden isn't producing. We home can and dehydrate as well but as cheap as canned and frozen vegetables are, I'm using my canning jars for meats and soups. They've suddenly become a limited resource that I don't want to use up on green beans and corn. 🙂

      That's all you can do for now Melody. If I could offer a few tips, think about space at the bottom of your closets, under the bed, under a staircase and even out in the open. Years ago I had cases of food against the wall in our living room. I put a piece of plywood (Home Depot will cut to size) as a table top. We covered it with a large table cloth that draped down all sides. After a lamp and a few nick nacks you would have never known. We did the same thing with water and TP in the bathroom. You might consider a stocked bugout location eventually if you're in a large city. We do that even though we're pretty rural here.

      I cover the vents in the winter and open them in the summer so it stays cool in there.
      As far as a garage goes, I live in Michigan and I still feel it gets too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter to store most foods.
