I have several pairs of Bruno Marc shoes - love them ! First pair probably just over a year ago. I'm a fan too. They looked decent so I ordered some. Great Video - We are all legends !
Here are my additional tips: 1. Keep a lean or minimal wardrobe. Fewer clothes cost less money. 2. I figured out what I *needed.* I then figured out a few extra things I *wanted and liked.* The best "deal" in the world is a waste of money if I never wear the clothes (which is likely if I don't need or want/like them). 3. Getting too many items of one type. I own a bomber jacket and a Harrington jacket. (I live in a warm climate.) If I bought a trucker jacket and a field jacket, it would just cut into the times that I wear one of my other casual jackets (the bomber and Harrington). That's a waste of money. 4. I figured out what alterations my tailor can make, and asked how much she charges for those alterations. That way I can mentally add that amount to any purchase (that needs an alteration) to get the "true" cost. 5. I also found some brands that fit me *perfectly,* so I can save on tailoring costs. 6. When I'm buying used/preowned clothes, I'll look for reviews of *the brand* to see if they're quality and last well … or if they're trashy fast fashion. 7. Since we're supposed to match our leathers and metals, I chose two colors of leather and one color of metal for my accessories (shoes, belt, belt buckle, watch, watch strap, etc.). That allows me to cover my bases with fewer purchases. 8. I purchased quick-release watch straps for my watches, allowing greater interchangeability between my watches and my outfits. (Watch straps tend to be much cheaper than watches.) 9. My most frequently worn accessories are eyeglasses. Therefore, I wrote down my prescription from my optometrist, *including my pupil distance* (which they rarely give), then purchased a few less expensive pairs of glasses from Zenni. Now I can match my glasses to my outfit, and I have spares if a pair gets broken. 10. There are guidelines regarding which color pants work with which color shoes. (Antonio has a chart over at the RMRS website). I consult with it before buying shoes or pants, in order to ensure my new purchases interchangeably follow those guidelines with my existing pants/shoes.
Found a genuine Harris tweed jacket in a thrift shop once for $5. Fitted me like a glove and I always regret not buying it. But I was a student and there was beer to pay for.
Found a Tommy Hilfiger sports coat at Salvation Army for $8 with the $550 tag from Nordstrom's still on it. Also found a Brooks Bros Tweed (retail $700) and a pair of vintage Ferragamo Oxford shoes (value about $1200) for $6 each. Estate sales in wealthy neighborhoods are great also, especially for ties.
Good episode. Also, buy off-season clearance. Check out clothiers like Ben Silver, Maus & Hoffman, Bullock & Jones, etc. Classic style, good fabrics and construction from all of these merchants.
Off-season is always a bit of a gamble, as there's no guarantee one's sizes are still available, but it can lead to very good deals. Got a pair of goodyear welted, pebble grain captoe boots that went for 360 orginally for a measily 160 bucks in clearance. BUT it was the last pair.
Excellent content. My financial advisor used to buy and wear suits that didn't fit. It bothered me; so distracting. I didn't follow him to his next company...just saying: Tailoring matters.
GREAT CHANNEL!! You don't have to dress very well to be the best dressed man around. I buy A LOT of my wardrobe from thrift stores. (Find ones in wealthy towns and you'll find high quality clothes that sometimes seem like new.)
Great content as always. Shoes are something I do spend more on. Many moons ago I worked in a men’s shoe department in a retailer up here in Canada. It was a part time job so I wasn’t an Al Bundy, but I learn good shoes last and leather souled ones can be resoled . Thrift stores are great. There are places that sell high end suits for half the price.
Estate sales, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc can be excellent resources for name brand and high end clothing, especially suits, sports coats, shoes and ties. When people pass or go into retirement homes, the family will often donate the clothes or have an estate sale which focuses on the high dollar hard goods and furnishings.
Thanks for posting. I am currently updating my wardrobe, which got stuck in the black and navy zone since 2020; buying either sale items or from value stores and totally amazed at the quality I am getting at a more affordable price. Many people are noticing the positive change and giving me compliments, which is always nice. Thanks for the inspiration from your videos.
Great video, and thanks for the information on shoes…stylish and affordable, like you say. I may go hit the tailor with some of my non dress shirts. Even though I’m retired and not out that much, knowing I can pull a style rabbit out of my hat is a good feeling, and it’s really for myself not so much others.
Just went and got another two pair of Bruno Marc shoes. Been wearing them for past 6 years or so. Great style for a good price. Thank you for the discount 👍🏻
Couple other suggestions would be to try on many different brands and see which fit you best and which size you are in that brand. That way you can take advantage of online retailer sale prices as you already know what fits you. Sign up for that brand's email notifications too. Case in point...my favorite jeans are Paige, which can be pricey but because I know exactly which fit and size I am and sign up for their emails, last week I received their 40% off email so I checked what they had in my size and purchased immediately. Saved $130 and didn't have to hesitate based on not knowing whether or not they will fit.
I agree with everything except for the Bruno Marc shoes. One is better buying second hand, real leather shoes made in Europe or the USA on eBay or in a thrift store, than buying Asian sweatshop made Bruno Marc.
Especially since all of them are made of plastic and can't even hide it on the pictures. I feel sponsorships like this could be really damaging to channels focusing on style advice.
When selecting the link for Bruno Marc, the page opens, and describes two of the shoes as "Oxfords", but they're clearly Derby's. Great content though.
Thrifting Is a BIG TIME style move in the classical style and some others you’ll find $100 shirts for $5, in great condition too, shoes and outerwear though, don’t be cheap.
I'm noticing that classic menswear is coming down a bit in price. If you go out shopping regularly you can find great buys in good men's pants, jackets etc. I've seen nice sport coats for $99 and good dress pants for $40, so no excuse any more for those who think this type of clothing is expensive.
Sale racks are a great way to pick up great items at a fraction of the price. Whenever I find great buys on the sale rack, I try to buy at least one regularly priced item to support the store. Online competition and Covid have presented hard times to brick and morter retail. Throw them a bone when you can.
I think the best tip in this video is thrifting. Most of my wardrobe is thrifted these days, but then again, I'm lucky enough to have great thrift stores in my area. And don't sleep on thrifting shoes as well. Shoes are made to last more than clothing, so you can get some serious bargains that you can wear for years. One more tip I would give is, if you're gonna shop for new clothes, to never shop in person. If you're looking for value, you'll never find the best price in a physical store. Shop online instead.
The problem I often encountered with thrifting shoes is that they're almost never taken care of properly (no shoe trees, no dusting off, no quick polish) by the stores, so by the time someone picks them from the store, they're often ruined beyond remedy. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I have yet to find them.
John and Antonio are the only ones I really like, they are to the point and honest, I feel Aaron is going in a different way lately, I don’t like Alex costa, he’s more focused on expensive stuff that probably majority of guys can’t afford
John, brilliant as always. I want to extend a sincere apology for my absence for about…5 months? That said, I am back watching my favorite men’s fashion advisor who, in my opinion, is no leas of if not more of a "behemoth." I occasionally go to the same items unless I know exactly what I want and I am fully aware of the cost. Going to check out those shoes. Thank you, John and again my apologies.
I buy expensive shoes, watches, one Zilli cashmere ¾ length jacket. The rest is cheap-usually. It’s amazing how good that works. The watch, shoes & jacket cover for all the cheap stuff. Great video Please don’t get mad at me for expensive shoes. 😅
When you upgrade your wardrobe, there are two things you should be prepared for: The smiles and approving looks from women and... The dirty looks you WILL get from other guys wearing hoodies. Other men will automatically hate you and there's a sense of satisfaction in that. "BE THE KIND OF MAN THAT MAKES OTHER MEN WANT TO UP THEIR GAME!"
Different people have their own personal tastes and opinions so others should be tolerant. Older men can wear hoodies in places where plenty of others including women are dressed similar such as at a football game or in a park
I may try the fabric sneakers from Bruno Marc. But I tried their white minimalist "vegan leather" aka imitation leather sneakers. Wasn't impressed. Look was great though. Quality not so much in my opinion. Think the mixing of low and high priced items is a good balance.
I'm into the monochrome look ,however I sometimes wonder if it's better to go dark top half and lighter bottom half, or go the other way. I'm a little overweight around the mid section. Suggestions ?
Yeah, I’ve talked about this quite a bit in terms of contrast and carrying extra weight. Dark colors, top, and light colors on the bottom can help visually balance your proportions. Light colors are bulking, so try to avoid light colors where you don’t want to add bulk.
Dark clothes for the half that you want to look smaller, and light clothes for the half you want to look larger. Most likely, a dark shirt with lighter pants.
Greetings John. I have a video suggestion. A collaboration of style channels from different regions of the country and what makes them different. I watch you and someone else who are heavily influenced by southern California style. This is fine. But lets compare styles from different pars of the country perhaps for the same season. You might even hook up with some folks from other countries? Thanks for listening.
Listen, dude. I'm 40 years old & I'm thriving. Better then I was in my 20s for sure. Do I need any advises? Well, I like to wonder. But I do like to be in your company. Smth like one way friendship. Cos most of my guys kinda simply gave up when they have everything to not to. Thanks for your channel
I’m hoping you can make a video about this. I am 46, married with 2 teens and in good shape. I’m a senior director at my company and I dress age appropriate following your advice. Problem is I look like the son of most of my colleagues my age. It doesn’t help that I have no grey hair and can’t grow a beard. The question is how can men who look significantly younger than they are appear their age?
Other than dressing my age, and wearing clothes that are slightly dressier than my colleagues, there's not much else I've been able to do. But the clothes go a long way. (I'm 53 and finally have a few gray hairs … but not enough to be visible yet.)
This guy isn't paying me but I've been wearing Bruno Marc Oxfords (Brown as well as Black) for over a year. It's a good shoe and it really is a comfortable shoe (For me). I've worn them for 8 hour shifts at a hospital. People have commented me on my Bruno Marcs (No Joke). Never got a compliment about wearing Oxfords. Since you're in SD mail me a Carne Asada Burrito from Roberto's for the promotion. 5 rolled tacos is also and option. Cheers, Rob
Yeah, I’ve made many videos about belts. I generally cover that in outfit, basics videos, or some color matching videos. However, no standalone videos about belts specifically.
You certainly don’t have to. And maybe, instead of focusing on the one singular thing that you don’t agree with, maybe focus on the entire message of the video which is to help people. Either way, thanks for watching.
Hello. It is one thing dressing well. But getting there or stocking one’s wardrobe could be very expensive. ie. You were talking about Collar & Co Oxford button down shirts. Great idea but, at £75.00 a piece is not everybody’s ability to buy or afford !!

John, You da man. #legend Have a great weekend my friend! BTW... when we all shop we should feel like the guy at the 5:00 minute mark.
So true! Cheers!

John as ever you are on point for your demographic.
Saw an older gent in monochrome browns once. Looked stunning.

Those look like great shoes, particularly the brown ones. I never buy clothes off of the full price racks, just not worth it. Legend John!
Thank you!
Also, depending on where you live you may be able to find sample sales for high quality brands
Legends will always be legends!
I have some Bruno Marc loafers.. not bad!
Sale racks are a great way to pick up great items at a fraction of the price. Whenever I find great buys on the sale rack, I try to buy at least one regularly priced item to support the store. I want a good heavy white button down shirt like the one you have on. What do you suggest? Tired of the thin see through shirts
Any advice for the older blue collar guys? I'm a big guy with the Tank Abbott build and don't feel right in these types of clothes for the most part.
The simplest answer, and the easiest place to start, is to take what you already wear, and find nicer versions of those things.
I think the best tip in this video is thrifting. Most of my wardrobe is thrifted these days, but then again, I'm lucky enough to have great thrift stores in my area. You recommend to have how many jackets ?
Those Bruno Marc shoes are nice.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, as usual. What brand of oxford shirts do you wear? The white one and the blue one at 7:00 and 7:07 are really nice!
I think those were from John, Henric and Express.
Is it ok to wear a corduroy vest with jeans?

Although not required, you should align your belt with your “gig line”. It looks more aesthetically pleasing and polished in my opinion.
Like the vid. Man at 5:01 needs to see a good barber though. :)

What is Ying? Anything like Yin?
Bruno Marc is going hard sponsoring men's style channels. All of you should know better. Sorry, but I will not be buying plastic shoes.
You certainly don’t have to. And maybe, instead of focusing on the one singular thing that you don’t agree with, maybe focus on the entire message of the video which is to help people. Either way, thanks for watching.

Just an ad for shoes
I buy all my shoes from Bruno Marc
Awesome!
The problem with budget clothes is that you keep finding deals so you keep accumulating more clothes so it's not really budget is it.
Too bad Bruno Marc only has small sizes.
im sorry but those shoes look super cheap...shoes is NOT wear i would try to save money in a wardrobe
Your style of clothes too simple only for the beginner not fashion and very American not trendy!
Forget the shorts if you are an adult.
I want a good heavy white button down shirt like the one you have on. What do you suggest? Tired of the thin see through shirts
