In the last 2 years before becoming 50 I came across men's style and minimalism. Both have helped one reinvent myself and overcome past regrets. Clear out the old things that were no longer me, and bring in a style that makes me feel more like a success.

I turn 57 in 5 days & subscribed to your channel. I haven’t taken care of myself for 37 years I’ve worn a metro Police uniform non-administrative, retire in 9 months, because I had to put 3 kids through law school. I’ve never bought myself clothes, my mother always bought my clothes, but she passed in 2013, so my mother taught my wife about 3 years before she passed, but my daughter who is a DC attorney is always buying me clothes? I hardly ever go out, so I wear it when she flys home to visit her mother & I. But my wife has been wanting to buy me a wardrobe, I guess I’d better start? I never was a detective only patrol, so the uniforms were always free, and I always wore my uniform boots off duty, so I wouldn’t have to buy my own shoes, but we had three kids to put through college & grad school, so I never spent anything on myself, but did buy my wife whatever she wanted.

This is my favorite channel, I finally don’t feel, so awkward wearing clothes that kids in their 20’s wear. I always wore Polo in HS & college, because mother was the district superintendent & tenured chairperson at a university close by, she demanded I wear the clothes she would purchase me, particularly when she traveled to the East & West Coast for public administration lecturing. I truly didn’t know about polo in 1979 when I was a freshman in college, however mother, by default had to be the best dressed, simply because she had 27 professors to administrate & facilitate, as she also had numerous school principals that she also met with each morning from 8-8:30AM each morning via telephone conference. Thus she felt Polo would be a good fit for me, I wore Polo all through H/S & college & graduate school, but I never knew anything about fashion, because I worked my last two years of H/S 1/2 in a school Cooperative program & all through college full-time, at a gigantic ranch working cattle branding, 7-way inoculations, ear tags, roping, herding, loading & transporting in 18-wheelers. All this to pay my college, my folks demanded that I consume every minute of each day academically and/or with my job , so that I could pay my college. However, to this day I never know what to purchase except Polo, but now I’m 57YO since 03/27 & mother passed, so my daughter started to purchase my clothes & is teaching her mother how to choose my clothes, because they both say that I look & dress like an antique since my wife also cuts my hair, so I don’t have to spend on haircuts, I’ve always only used Ivory bar soap for my head also & never have bought myself products until now my daughter is teaching her mother how to purchase these items since I’ll start teaching at a university full-time, directly after retirement.

Especially now that i'm single and want to attract a woman. I figured that it's time i stop wearing branded hoodies, distressed jeans and baggy shirts, but the problem for me is that it's hard to look my age when i have a baby face and a slim build. I actually want to look 40, not 20 something. I think completely changing the way i dress will be the easiest step to looking more mature and refined, so this channel should help me with that.

Time for you to suit-up. Don't walk into a store, buy online - menswear staff today are trained to serve young people and accordingly will send you out with the wrong fit. Measure yourself a dozen times, if necessary, with at least 2 tape measures, until you get a consistent picture. Hem the trousers yourself, ensuring no scissors are used. Hesitate before altering jacket sleeve lengths, as they need a tailor. Wear brogues; ignore advice suggesting they are too informal for a suit - they're not, and work better with older men.

I don't really enjoy the clothes shopping experience and tend to be impatient and really only buy nice casual (can go with a sport coat at night) every few years, going to a place like Nordstroms and getting a personal shopper where they bring the clothes to me to try on works well. The sizes tend to be close to perfect fit and I get exposure to different colors and styles and that I might not always consider on my own. It also keeps me away from the "on sale rack" and the styles last until I do it again.

Slim tapered wasn't happening. American Eagle and Old Navy Athletic Fit are perfect. I'm 5'9", a lean 195lbs, and 34/32 fits best for me in case anyone is of similar build for sizing. I’m not stuck in the middle. I’ll be 68 this summer and DEFINITELY want to look groomed and sharp. I’m still decent build, 32/33 waist 42 around the chest. For several years now I’m wearing slim fit clothing size med and often times certain brands fit great off the rack. Shirts can be a touch tight on the chest and baggy below the ribs so…a little trip to the tailor fixes that. My point in all of this…I love mixing colours…green top grey bottoms, etc. Dress young with class, poise and character but most of all…mature. I NEVER wear jeans with holes, t’s are worn at home or the gym. Anyway…I feel great when I’m dressed to the t’s.

However, something you started talking about at around 4:35 as it relates to darker colors making a person look skim or depending where it’s work whether it be a pants or as a shirt in form. I’ve also heard something similar as it relates to wearing lighter colors and how it can make you look as far as light reflecting from a person. Now this is all intriguing to understand as it relates to dressing or how one chooses to dress. And I think these bits of info packaged could make an very interesting insight video.

Hi John. Having grown up with and wearing selvedge denim for years I was at first skeptical about stretch denim but now thats pretty much all I wear and you're right about it being comfortable and durable. I almost find it more durable than regular denim though there are differing opinions on that. The only thing I'm not fond go is the fake whiskering that some companies do to jeans. It never seems to line up on me where it should compared to a regular pair of denim that fade and whisker on their own. Also if you want to make those guns more prominent look for shorter sleeves and if the sleeves are a bit floppy have them taken in . Nice dance moves BTW . ; ) Peace. : )

Having a few pairs of Very good quality and always clean shoes is a great tip as we get older. As with clothing, shoes appropriate for the function and occasion. Although it is mostly zoom meetings lately :-)

Thanks for putting the lead photo of a man with a larger bread. I decided to let my beard grow out in 15. I love sporting a larger man beard. However, I have always like looking fashionable for my age of 59. I'm very conscious about my facial hair and never want to be confused about looking like a homeless man in public. I really enjoy your show and you've helped me to look better than the average man in public. Thx...👍

I looked at an old photo of Jean Paul Sartre, if I look that cool in my old age, I'll be happy. The weird thing is he isn't even trying. And that's the secret, don't try too hard, like quality shines through, fashion is always an adjunct to something deeper.

John! Thanks for this great video. I also just finished watching your two part video at Daniel George getting your first bespoke suit (which looked amazing, btw, and was very informative!). I am 59 and so this topic caught my eye. I'll have to dig through your episodes, but would love to see a video on the topic of using a stylist and how to go about doing that. (or better yet, do you hire out? lol) All my best to you!

The point is its about how you "LOOK" not how you "FEEL"! Men of our grandparents generation wore summer suits and ties even in the Mediterranean because they had personal standards of dress they were not going to compromise on, and they prided themselves on looking smart, anyway jeans are dawn hot to wear in summer, chinos are cooler, and shorts are beach wear unless you are 9 years old

One point to be made: Many of us have skin issues. I have dermatitis and psoriasis. Skin care is a very tricky issue for me. Moisturizers can aggravate my dermatitis. One of the best investments you can make is consulting a dermatologist. Even IF you don't have underlying issues, as we age, we become prone to issues like melanoma and the like. Especially, balding men, living in the south.

Just found you through your video on tips for IG posts. REALLY enjoying your content, but I'm finding a lot of tips about how to hide your dad bod, and how to hide balding, etc. I'm about your age - 52, but I don't have a dad bod, and I'm not balding. Would love to watch your tips on how to look good when I'm already an avid exerciser, already watching my diet. I don't need to slim my waist line, hide a double chin etc. Just wanna learn more about adult style. Thanks!!!

Another tip... Look at actors of a similar age who you identify style-wise with. The wardrobe directors of the films they are in will spend a lot of money getting their style right. They are also likely to have personal stylists. Obviously most of us won't have their money but the way they put together their outfits have often give a few clues as to what looks good on someone your age.
